''National Lampoon'', Jan. 1973 (Quick Note: should you decide to venture into this issue to see what content it contains, you should be warned that the humor is solidly of its time and that there is a section in here that I find to be in poor taste called "Play Dead", ostensibly making fun of 'Playboy', where naked women assume various forms of death by suicide. Y'all, it's fucked up and it's even more fucked up when I imagine the possibility of some adolescent boy masturbating to those images. How many serial killers and sexual predators did this issue midwife into existence?*) This was the cover for 'National Lampoon's' "Death" issue and it became one of the most famous magazine covers of the 1970s. "Designed by the late Lampoon art director Michael Gross, the cover is widely regarded as one of the greatest not only in the history of the magazine but in the history of magazines, period. In 2005, the American Society of Magazine Editors named the Death cover one of the Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years. It ranked No. 7, right between the New Yorker's 9/11 cover on September 24, 2001 and the October 1966 cover of Esquire." From what I've been able to glean from some (what the podcast 'The Rewatchables' would call) half-assed internet research, people bought this issue in droves to save this dog's life. (I can only image what the internet reaction would look like to a magazine cover that had the message "If You Don't Buy this Magazine, We'll Kill This Dog.") The dog's name is Cheeseface and the crazy thing about this dog that is news to me as I type these words is that in 1976 an unknown person shot and killed Cheeseface in Vermont. "The identity and motivation of the assailant remain unknown." Someone labeled this shooting "the only assassination in celebrity animal history." I can't verify that claim. (I mean, who would put in the time to verify that claim? Some "true crime" podcast maybe. I hear there's some Reddit threads out there on this. I won't be reading them.)
Maybe all of this is covered in the 2018 film adaptation of Josh Karp's 2006 book, "A Futile and Stupid Gesture." I haven't see it yet.
*this sentence is a joke although the warning prior it and the sentiment about the section is sincere.

Labels Want to Prevent ‘Taylor’s Version’-Like Re-Recordings From Ever Happening Again
Warner Music Group, have recently overhauled contracts for new signees, according to top music attorneys, some demanding artists wait an unprecedented 10, 15 or even 30 years to re-record releases after departing their record companies. “The first time I saw it, I tried to get rid of it entirely,” says Josh Karp, a veteran attorney, who has viewed the new restrictions in UMG contracts. “I was just like, ‘What is this? This is strange. Why would we agree to further restrictions than we’ve agreed to in the past with the same label?'”
For decades, standard major-label recording contracts stated artists had to wait for the latter of two periods to expire before they could put out re-recorded versions, Swift-style: It could have been five to seven years from the release date of the original, or two years after the contract expired. Today, attorneys are receiving label contracts that expand that period to 10 or 15 years or more — and the attorneys are pushing back. “It becomes one of a multitude of items you’re fighting,” Karp says.
“I recently did a deal with a very big indie that had a 30-year re-record restriction in it. Which obviously is much longer than I’m used to seeing,” adds Gandhar Savur, attorney for Cigarettes After Sex, Built to Spill and Jeff Rosenstock. “I think the majors are also trying to expand their re-record restrictions but in a more measured way — they are generally not yet able to get away with making such extreme changes.”

Slow asses lol. I knew👏🏽 this shit was on its way from these losers. Majors are always left behind in the creative direction of music evolution and are determined to stifle an artist's level of (loopholed) independence within the machine. Taylor is out here doing peak-2000s CD era, first-week numbers on her old "new" shit (before that Dell Glover shift 🙃) and collecting luggage-size bags. Crash course:
In order to use the sound recordings from her first six albums, Swift would be required to license or buy them back from Shamrock Capital. However, as Swift owns the musical compositions and accompanying lyrics, she always had the exclusive right to perform and create adaptations of her songs subject to the terms of her original contract with Big Machine. Once the restriction periods in her initial record deal began to expire (around late 2020 and likely determined from the date that each album was recorded), Swift began re-recording the music from her first six albums so that she would finally be able to own new master recordings of these songs. So far, Swift has released re-recordings of three out of six of her first albums, with her highly anticipated fourth re-recorded album to be released on 27 October this year. The re-recorded albums are being released as "Taylor's Versions". By doing this, Swift is able to own the copyright in the musical composition, lyrics and master recordings of her music, placing her in a stronger position to control the licensing and use of her music for better promotion and financial compensation. (x)
T.S. on all that shit. They are bothered bothered, honey. She's not the first to do it (think JoJo rerecording her first two albums after her forced release from Barry Hankerson, who tried to own her voice and name in perpetuity on some Ariel shit) nor the last (think Ashanti gearing up the re-recording of her debut album post-Irv Gotti). But Taylor's the first of this caliber (6 albums) and turnaround time. Artist-writers, who don't own their masters, been taking notes. But the main note they should've been taking is from that writer's strike. They been needed an overhaul. Working without ownership and nothing to show but fame and lint-balled pockets.

2023 Film Reviews
(from July to December)
5 stars
Medea (1983): A strong adaptation of the play. A straightforward simple telling of the story, almost like a filmed stage performance. Strong acting from the leads.
4 stars
Haunted Mansion (2023): The first twenty minutes felt a bit rough humor wise but it smoothed out after that. Overall I enjoyed, I was actually pleasantly surprised by the performances. Strong focus on grief and healing from loss while also being a spooky fun family movie.
Ninja Shadow of a Tear (2013): Strong improvement on Ninja 2009. Better action, better acting, better story. Strigtforward revenge story but it does the formula well. Kane Kosugi as Nakabara is a highlight even if he only has a handful of key scenes. Docked a few points for fridging the last movie's female lead without even a good fight scene.
Five Nights at Freddys (2023): I was delighted; animatronics alternated between adorable giant cuddle buddies and deadly killing machines, bunch of lore easter eggs, Josh Hutcherson as a sad wet dog of a man and his odd little sister, Mathew Lilliard having a blast, and a wildly flipping tone (which is perfect for this franchise). Will horror fans like it? Eh, there are spooky scenes but cut between robot adorableness and somber family drama. Will average moviegoers like it? Again, the tone varies wildly and the story's a bit confusing and doesn't answer every question (which fits fnaf). Best to approach it as a spooky fun alternate adaptation of the game story.
The Marvels (2023): I mostly enjoyed it! It's fun and fastpaced and it balances the stories of the three leads pretty well. I think the fast pace is a detriment at some points since the emotional moments aren't always given enough time to breathe (I wish we spent a little more time on the musical planet for example). Villain feels a little forgetable but she has a good motive that ties well into Carol's guilt about how she handled fighting Hala. The Flerkens are fantastic as usual. There's a planet where they communicate primarily through song, where Carol is technically a princess and has a platonic husband (I so badly want to hear that story). I like the heart of the story too, about the relationships between the three leads.
3 stars
Ninja (2009): it's a fun sometimes goofy ninja film, you get what you pretty much expect. Although it does have a heart and genuine character interactions, even if they don't get full arcs.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023): eh it's okay. I like Harrison Ford as Grumpy Old Man Indy Jones; I think I actually connected more to this version of him than the previous films (guess depression made him relatable). Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) was mostly a delight; yes she's selfish and greedy and her character arc isn't quite there but she bounces off Indy in fun ways. Mason (Shaunette Renee Wilson) seemed to have potential for an interesting arc but that was abruptly scrapped. Mads Mikkelsen does well as the villain and it was especially fun to see him progressively lose his shit in the climax as his plan falls apart.
The Shepherd (2008): Meh, it's okay. There's definitely far worse direct to video Van Damme films. There are a couple fun aspects (Jack carries around a pet rabbit also named Jack, Scott Adkins as side villain Karp) but it felt lackluster.
Gran Turismo (2023): First act is pretty weak like it's just hitting the required plot points and the training section definitely felt rushed. It regains it's footing once the lead actually starts racing. An interesting look at the fallout (both PR and emotional) of a nasty race crash. Good showing from the cast, especially from Djimon Hounsou.
2 stars
Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023): Cool action and stunts. Too long and too many characters. Most of the new cast are either boring or annoying, couldn't remember the names of half of them. Couldn't take the scary AI threat seriously because it felt like jumping the shark. Through most of it I just felt mildly annoyed, including when a favorite character was abruptly killed.
Hard Night Falling (2019): Typical Die Hard formula featuring Dolph Lundgren. It's functional but doesn't do anything to stand out. Mostly a bland experience.

Major Labels Trying to Stop Artists from Re-Recording Songs
Steve Knopper, writing for Billboard: The major labels, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group, have recently overhauled contracts for new signees, according to top music attorneys, some demanding artists wait an unprecedented 10, 15 or even 30 years to re-record releases after departing their record companies. “The first time I saw it, I tried to get rid of it entirely,” says Josh Karp, a veteran attorney, who has viewed the new restrictions in UMG contracts. “I was just like, ‘What is this? This is strange. Why would we agree to further restrictions than we’ve agreed to in the past with the same label?’” And: Adds Dina LaPolt, a music attorney with a long history of grappling with labels over contracts: “Now, because of all this Taylor Swift stuff, we have an even new negotiation. It’s awful. We’re seeing a lot of ‘perpetuity.’ When we were negotiating deals with lawyers, before we would get the proposal, we’d get the phone call from the head of business affairs. We literally would say, ‘If you send that to me, it will be on Twitter in 10 minutes.’ It never showed up.” --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/linked/major-labels-trying-to-stop-artists-from-re-recording-songs/

A Futile and Stupid Gesture 2: Bucking the Trend Line
Less a sequel than a second version of A Futile and Stupid Gesture, this one instead focuses on William F. Buckley, Jr.'s time at Yale, through the founding of the National Review, up until the SEC crackdown on several of his businesses in the late 1970s and early 1980s. And the cast is the exact same cast from the first movie, with everyone taking on different roles, though Will Forte again portrays the writer at the center of the story, in this case Buckley rather than Kenney.
