August 31 - Yui Nagomi (Cure Precious)

Sts. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus: Both of these men are appeared in the Holy Bible's New Testament. Joseph (not to be confused with the foster father of Jesus) is from Arimathea, and a respected but wealthy civic leader and a member of the Sanhedrin. More important is the courage Joseph showed in asking Pilate for Jesus’ body. Jesus was a condemned criminal who had been publicly executed. Nicodemus is also a member of the Sanhedrin and a important one like Joseph, and was a Pharisee. He appeared in the Gospel of John when he secretly visits Jesus at night to discuss his teachings, and was impressed by the miracles of Jesus but was not fully convinced that he was the Messiah. Both Joseph and Nicodemus are honored by the Roman Catholic Church on this date, as Joseph is the patron of undertakers and funeral directors while Nicodemus is the patron of curiosity.

March 13 - Kokone Fuwa (Cure Spicy)

St. Roderick: 9th century priest who is formerly a Muslim, and is venerated as one of the Martyrs of Córdoba. Tradition states that he was a Christian priest of Cabra who had two brothers: one was a Muslim, the other irreligious. Once, after his brothers began to fight one another, Roderick attempted to break up the fight. However, they turned on him instead and beat him. When Roderick maintained his loyalty to the Catholic religion, he was accused of apostasy from Islam under Sharia law, and he was imprisoned and then beheaded along with Salomon (Solomon) at Córdoba.

July 11 - Ran Hanamichi (Cure Yum-Yum)

St. Benedict: 5th century abbot, mystic, exorcist, religious and founder of the Order of Saint Benedict (the Benedictine order). He founded twelve communities for monks at Subiaco, Lazio, before moving to Monte Cassino in the mountains of southern Italy. The Order of Saint Benedict is of later origin and, moreover, not an 'order’ as commonly understood but merely a confederation of autonomous congregations. His main achievement, his ’Rule of Saint Benedict’, contains a set of rules for his monks to follow. Heavily influenced by the writings of John Cassian, it shows strong affinity with the Rule of the Master, but it also has a unique spirit of balance, moderation and reasonableness, which persuaded most Christian religious communities founded throughout the Middle Ages to adopt it. As a result, his Rule became one of the most influential religious rules in Western Christendom. He is believed to have died of a fever at Monte Cassino not long after his twin sister, Scholastica, and was buried in the same place as his sister. He was named patron protector of Europe by Pope Paul VI in 1964, and in 1980, Pope St. John Paul II declared him co-patron of Europe, together with Cyril and Methodius.

November 24 - Amane Kasaki (fka Gentlu) (Cure Finale)

St. Albert of Louvain: 12th century French cardinal and martyr. He is the second of two sons to Duke Godfrey III, Count of Leuven, and his first wife Margareta van Limburg, and was the brother of Henry I, Duke of Brabant. In 1188, he became the Archdeacon of Liège and later received the subdiaconate in 1191. That same year he was elected Bishop of Liège and despite the fact that he had not reached the canonical age of 30, his appointment was widely approved. Gilbert of Mons, chancellor of Count Baldwin V of Hainaut, who attended the election, along with other princes and nobles, described the proceedings as a power struggle between Albert's brother Henry and Baldwin. Albert took the matter to Rome and appealed to Pope Celestine III. In May 1192, Pope Celestine III made Albert a cardinal, and ordained him in Rome as a deacon on 30 May 1192. He was then ordained to the priesthood on 19 September 1192 by Cardinal Guillaume de Champagne. Albert met three German knights in 1192 who persuaded him to ride on horseback with them outside of Reims. Outside of the city they attacked Albert with their swords and struck him on the head which crushed his skull and caused him to fall, where they made sure they killed him prior to making an escape.

"Vertuscht wurde lange genug" Schuldeingeständnis von Benedikt gefordert 23.01.2022, 16:20 Uhr Das Münchner Missbrauchsgutachten erschüttert die katholische Kirche. Im Zentrum der Kritik steht der emeritierte Papst Benedikt. In verschiedenen Predigten finden Bischöfe und Kirchenvertreter an diesem Wochenende deutliche Worte für die dramatische Lage. Der Aachener Bischof Helmut Dieser fordert angesichts des Münchner Missbrauchsgutachtens ein öffentliches Schuldeingeständnis des emeritierten Papstes Benedikt XVI.. "Es kann nicht dabei bleiben, dass Verantwortliche sich flüchten in Hinweise auf ihr Nichtwissen oder auf damalige andere Verhältnisse oder andere Vorgehensweisen. Denn deswegen wurden doch damals Täter nicht gestoppt und Kinder weiter von ihnen missbraucht!", sagte Dieser. Der Vorsitzende der Deutschen Bischofskonferenz, Georg Bätzing, beklagte "desaströses Verhalten" auch von den Spitzen der Kirche und mahnte: "Verdeckt und vertuscht wurde lange genug, jetzt ist die Zeit der Wahrheit." Benedikt, der frühere Kardinal Joseph Ratzinger, hatte das Erzbistum München und Freising von 1977 bis 1982 geführt. Ein vom Erzbistum selbst in Auftrag gegebenes Gutachten kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass Fälle von sexuellem Missbrauch in der Diözese über Jahrzehnte nicht angemessen behandelt wurden. Benedikts Rolle ist besonders brisant. Ihm werden vier Fälle von Fehlverhalten angelastet. Er hat die Vorwürfe in einer Verteidigungsschrift zurückgewiesen. Die Gutachter gehen davon aus, dass er aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach nicht die Wahrheit gesagt hat. "Auch Bischöfe, auch ein ehemaliger Papst, können schuldig werden, und in bestimmten Situationen müssen sie das auch öffentlich bekennen, nicht nur im Gebet vor Gott oder im Sakrament in der Beichte", mahnte Dieser, der in der Bischofskonferenz dem Lager der Reformer zugerechnet wird, in einer Predigt im Aachener Dom. Die Unfähigkeit, eigene Verantwortung zu spüren, Schuld einzugestehen, um Vergebung zu bitten oder wenigstens Bedauern und Schmerz über den eigenen Anteil an der Tragödie auszudrücken, mache ihn traurig und wütend. "Dass auch der frühere Papst Benedikt das noch nicht getan hat, darf nicht sein letztes Wort dazu sein!" Ungeheuerliche Belastung Der Limburger Bischof Bätzing rief dazu auf, sich der Wahrheit zu stellen, so schmerzlich das auch sei. Man müsse klar sehen, was an "desaströsem Verhalten" auch von der Führung und den Spitzen der Kirche "bis hin zu einem emeritierten Papst angerichtet" worden sei, sagte der Vorsitzende der Bischofskonferenz am Freitagabend in einem Gottesdienst im Bezirk Trier. Er wisse, dass auf vielen Gläubigen diese Situation ungeheuerlich laste. Sie müssten sich bei Freunden und Familie dafür rechtfertigen, dass sie noch "zu diesem Verein gehören". Er appellierte an die Gläubigen: "Verlieren Sie nicht den Mut. Wir tun, was wir in dieser Zeit tun müssen." Aber ich gehe davon aus, dass das auch in Zukunft Gegenstand von Verfahren der ordentlichen Gerichte sein wird." Derzeit prüft die Justiz, ob die Ergebnisse des Gutachtens strafrechtlich relevant sind. Die Münchner Staatsanwaltschaft untersucht nach eigenen Angaben derzeit 42 Fälle von mutmaßlichem Fehlverhalten kirchlicher Verantwortungsträger. Die Ratsvorsitzende der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland (EKD), Annette Kurschus, sieht systemische Gründe für die vielen Fälle sexuellen Missbrauchs in der Kirche. "Es gibt kirchliche Muster und Strukturen, die sexualisierte Gewalt begünstigen", sagte Kurschus der "Rheinischen Post". "Das sind in der evangelischen Kirche andere als in der katholischen Kirche." Auch in evangelischen Gemeinden und Einrichtungen gebe es sexualisierte Gewalt: "Dadurch wurde und wird Vertrauen zerstört." Dieses zurückzugewinnen, sei ein langer Prozess.

Erwin Wurm

A recent favourite artist of mine as his humorous work of what was once functional objects he turns them to disfunction house hold objects, mainly using people to illustrate its uselessness. This work is irritating and absolutely bonkers but its exactly my cup of tea. 

Within my own practice I'm going to use the inspiration of turning thing function into disfunction, possible adding a humorous twist and linking it towards the pandemic. 

About 

Erwin Wurm is a contemporary Austrian artist working across several media. Wurm’s comical attitude towards representation features heavily in his Fat Car series, in which ge purposefully disfigures car models deemed status symbols by mass culture. “[For me] humor is primarily a method for getting people’s attention—it should ultimately prompt people to look at things more carefully,” the artist has reflected. Born on July 27, 1954 in Bruck an der Mur, Austria, Wurm  went on to study at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Following in the tradition of Joseph Beuys, the artist has contributed his own take on the medium of sculpture with his One Minute Sculptures. In these performances, Wurm invites audience participation and interaction to reevaluate the medium. His works have been shown at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and Vienna, the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lyon, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Wurm currently lives and works between Vienna and Limburg, Austria. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Albertina in Vienna, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others.

The Bokkenrijders - Introduction #2: Three Kinds Of People

PSA: In these theories, there is none more right than the other. All of these theories are still supported by researchers, although we do occasionally have a very... intense discussion about them. I’m telling you this so you know there is no right or wrong here. Please don’t have fights over this and keep discussions civil. It is also 100% okay to switch around a little. I myself used to be a supporter of the 2nd theory, but now believe the 3rd one.

As mentioned before, there are several theories surrounding the Bokkenrijders. My goal, the goal of this blog, is essentially to share reliable information with the world so the people reading this can eventually, with certainty, be a supporter of one of these theories, or maybe even create a new one themselves!

So what exactly are these three theories? 

Theory #1 - The confessions are all true, the Bokkenrijders were a violent and Satanic gang

Mostly supported by: S.J.P. Sleinada and other primary sources, people who lived during the times of the trials.

This was he first theory about the gang and the theory on which all the trials are based. The story described in introduction #1 is what this theory is about and, back in the days of the trials, this was the story most of the people believed (although there were already some talking about the second theory).

This theory describes the Bokkenrijders as being a Satanic gang who met up at chapels, robbed churches in the Devil’s name and flew on goats by his power. This theory is also sometimes mixed with the second theory, especially in literary works.

Some also believe that, while the gang itself was not really Satanic, they did use the fear the people had of there being a Satanic gang, for example by using an unholy oath, which led to people (members) being afraid of leaving and/or talking too much. 

Due to the fact that this was the leading theory for most of history (read 1730′s to 1960′s), it was long seen as something shameful to have a Bokkenrijder somewhere in your ancestry. There are even several cases of people changing their name due to this fact. One of the most famous cases of someone changing their name is Joseph Kerckhove van der Varent, born Joseph Kerckhoffs, great nephew of the 3rd gang’s (1752-1776) “leader” Joseph Kirchhoffs/Kerckhoffs.

 Theory #2 - The confessions are mostly  true, there was a gang, but they were Robin Hood-like

Mostly supported by: Wilhelm Gierlichs, Anton Blok and a lot of other researchers, most authors of literary works about the Bokkenrijders.

While there were already a few people talking about this theory during the later trials, it only became popular from the 1960′s on, when Catholicism became less important in Limburg (where the Lands of Overmaeze were once located). People began to speak more positively about the Bokkenrijders and having a member in your family became something to be proud of, instead of something you should be ashamed of. 

This theory states that there was indeed a gang, after all, almost everyone tried, confessed to having been a member. However, people who believe this theory think the members were not members just for the sake of robbing people, but in order to stay alive. After all, as stated in Introduction #1, the Lands of Overmaeze, and therefor most of its people, were poor and war-torn. It is very much possible people were so poor and desperate, they turned to criminality to support themselves and their families. 

The Third wave, led by the Kirchhoffs brothers, are said to be most evident of these Robin Hood-like tendencies, since most of the convicted leaders led wealthy lives, while most of the normal convicted members were poor. 

Some, if not most of the people who support this theory do keep to the Satanic part and say they either robbed churches because there was enough valuable things there, or because they blamed the Church for their poverty. While there are also a lot of people who still support the idea of there having been an important oath, nobody really believes the part they flew on goats anymore. 

This theory is practically the only one used in novels about the Bokkenrijders.

Theory #3 - The confessions are completely false, there was no single gang

Mostly supported by: Louis Augustus, François van Gehuchten, a few other modern researchers.

This is the newest theory. It started with Louis Augustus’s Publications (1991), and states that the Bokkenrijders never really existed. While this theory does acknowledge the existence of the trials, it dismisses the existence of the Bokkenrijders as a single gang. 

The reason for this is very simple: as stated in Introduction #1, torture was a very common practice during these trials. Supported of this theory state that, because of this, the confessions made during the trials, are unreliable. Besides, most confessions made are contradictory to each other. We should therefor look at what little other primary sources we have, such as Corpus Delicti, books and letters, but none of these have proven the existence of a single gang. In fact, the only available book as a primary source, S.J.P. Sleinada’s work, makes a lot of claims which can be proven false!

Toen mijn eerste vrouw mij niet al te vriendelijk verzocht om haar riante woning, Maastricht, definitief te verlaten moest ik snel een onderkomen vinden. Twee weken lang had ik een nomadisch bestaan en verbleef ik her en der. 

Het was op een zaterdagochtend in juni 2007. Maar, het was wel vaker een zaterdagochtend in juni 2007. Ik dronk een wodka in Brand’s bierhuis, tegenover het centraal station Maastricht, en zocht in Dagblad De Limburger naar een woning. Ik stond niet ingeschreven bij de woningbouwvereniging en was dus afhankelijk van de particuliere verhuur. Een appartement in Kerkrade. Drie hoog. Een ruime badkamer, een slaapkamer, open keuken, geen huisdieren. Slechts drie honderd en tachtig Euro kale huur in de maand. Dat was wel een ander bedrag dan de woningen die ik in Maastricht tegen was gekomen. Onder de zeshonderd was er niets te vinden.

‘Och ja, die in Cadier en Keer, geen Maastricht, die zat onder de zeshonderd Euro, maar dat was een saai, vochtig, betonnen, hok en Jezus hing aan de muur,’ dacht ik en ik nam nog een slok wodka.

Volgens de al dan niet fatsoenlijke heer die mij rondleidde was het niet toegestaan om Jezus te verwijderen. Dat stond zelfs in het huurcontract. Hij had een enorme snor, dikke rode appelwangen en was in de leeftijd van veel dichter bij de dood dan ik. Toen hij mijn auto, een rode met een kapot raam, linksachter, dichtgemaakt met ducktape, zag, deelde hij mee dat er ook iemand anders was geweest.

‘Hij maakt een hele goede kans,’ zei hij.

‘Geen probleem. Ik zie er vanaf,’ en ik schudde hem de hand.

Ik bestelde nog een wodka bij de rondborstige, opgedirkte, blondine achter de bar, gaf geen fooi en vroeg of ik van haar telefoon gebruik mocht maken omdat ik waarschijnlijk niet voldoende beltegoed had. Ze zei ‘neen.’

‘Luister, het is tamelijk belangrijk. Mijn vrouw heeft mij haar huis uit gegooid. Ze wilde meer tijd voor haarzelf, de liefde en passie was er niet meer, ze wilde meer tijd om eens goed na te denken over haar leven, haar drukke baan, ik was wel lief doch lui, passief en weet ik veel wat nog allemaal meer. Goed, ik schat jou ook niet helemaal droog achter de oren en je zult ook wel wat aderpalen hebben voorbij zien kwasten in je al dan niet interessante leven, dus je kent dat gelul wel. Nu weet ik niet hoeveel beltegoed ik nog heb en ik moet een woning hebben. Ik lees net in Dagblad De Limburger dat er een fantastische woning in Kerkrade te huur staat. Ik moet nu bellen. Anders ben ik verdorie weer een tijdje dakloos en dat zie ik helemaal niet zitten,’ zei ik tegen haar.

En ze riep ‘Theo’.

‘Dan gok ik het er maar op,’ zei ik.

Mijn aanstaande huisbaas was gelukkig kort en duidelijk. Ik maakte een afspraak met hem. Twee uur ’s middags sprak ik met hem af. Toen een vrouwenstem tussenbeide kwam en mij mededeelde dat mijn beltegoed op was, hoorde ik daarna nog een kort pre-historische klank waarna de verbinding werd verbroken. Daarop werd ik hardhandig opgetild door een zekere Theo. Zijn geur van een overmatig gebruik van Old Spice was niet te harden waardoor ik misselijk werd en over de advertentie van mijn aanstaande woning kotste. Theo vloekte hard in een onderaards dialect en sleurde mij naar de uitgang van de kroeg. Ik bleef met mijn linkervoet nogal ongelukkig achter een groen gordijn hangen en het gordijn kwam naar beneden. Eenmaal buiten begon het langzaam te druppelen. Ik hoorde nog wat harde oerklanken achter mij. Ik liep naar de kiosk een stukkie verderop en kocht twee pakjes Camel omdat ik na het nuttigen van een aantal glazen wodka het woord ‘Marlboro’ niet meer kon uitspreken. De ‘m’ en de ‘rlb’.

‘Dat Engelse woord voor onmiddellijk lukt ook nooit’, mompelde ik toen ik naar mijn auto liep.

‘Op de Holz. Dat is tegenover Bleijerheide. Bij de Nieuwstraat, de doorgaande weg naar Herzogenrath,’ had mijn aanstaande huisbaas gezegd.

Jesus’ Verwandtschaft

Im Limburger Dom befindet sich ein Gemälde mit dem Namen Stammbaum Jesu, das erklären soll, wie die Textstelle bei Matthäus 13,55 zu verstehen ist, in der von Jesu Brüdern und Schwestern die Rede ist. Angesichts, dass die fortdauernde Jungfernschaft der Gottesmutter Maria und die Einmaligkeit dessen verlangen, dass sie keine anderen Kinder außer Jesus hatte, versucht sich dieses Gemälde an eine Erklärung. Marias Mutter Anna soll mehrmals verheiratet gewesen sein, Maria hatte also Stiefgeschwister, und deren Kinder, sozusagen Jesu Stiefcousins, sollen die Brüder aus Mt 13,55 sein. Die Stiefschwestern von Maria hießen danach alle ebenfalls Maria. Welche anderen Quellen aus den Evangelien stützen das ?

 1. Der Vollständigkeit halber beginne ich mit der Verwandtschaft von Jesus’ Vater Joseph. Es gibt einen Stammbaum in Mt 1, der auf Abraham zurückgeht und einen in Lk 3,23, der bis Adam zurückreicht. Leider haben diese beiden Stammbäume überhaupt nichts miteinander zu tun.

  Marias Verwandtschaft:

Bekannt sind die Namen ihrer Eltern Joachim und Anna, jedoch nur aus den apokryphen Evangelien. Mt, Mk, Lk und Jh schweigen sich darüber aus.

Elisabeth, Frau des Zacharias und Mutter Johannes’ des Täufers wird als „Verwandte“ Marias bezeichnet (Lk 1).

  Jesu Geschwister:

In Mt 13,55 sprechen die Bewohner Nazareths über Jesus:“ Der Sohn des Zimmer-manns und der Maria. Seine Brüder heißen Jakobus, Joseph, Simon und Judas. Seine Schwestern wohnen bei uns.“  Auffällig ist, dass drei dieser Namen bei den Aposteln wieder auftauchen. Jakobus heißt dort Sohn des Alphäus (Mt, Mk und Lk) und bei Lukas 6,16 (und in der Apg) heißt ein Bruder des Jakobus Judas, der wiederum bei Mt und Mk Judas Thaddäus heißt und somit nicht Judas Ischariot sein kann). Simon der Eiferer, ein weiterer Apostel wird bei den Aufzählungen immer zwischen den beiden Brüdern genannt, sogar in der Apostelgeschichte 1,13. Wegen dieser Namensgleich-heit ist also angenommen worden, Jesus hätte seine Apostel auch unter seinen Verwandten ausgesucht, was auch plausibel ist. Denn es heißt, die Schwestern seien in Nazareth geblieben, daraus kann man schließen, dass die Brüder wie Jesus, evtl. mit ihm den Ort verlassen haben.

  Die Frauen am Kreuz:

Nach Mt 27,56 und Mk 15,40 und 47 ist bei der Kreuzigung Maria, Mutter Jakobus des Jüngeren (damit des Alpäussohnes) und des Jose zugegen, sowie eine Salome.

Bei Mt ist neben dieser Maria die Mutter der Söhne des Zebedäus (Jakobus der Ältere und Johannes) dabei. Stimmen Mt und Mk überein, dann heißt die Frau des Zebedäus Salome. Das begründet allerdings keine Verwandtschaft mit Maria, der Mutter Jesu. Lukas trägt nicht mehr dazu bei, als dass bei den Frauen, die Joseph von Arimathäa auf dem Weg zu Grab begleiten eine Maria, Mutter des Jakobus ist. Wenn die Mutter von Jakobus d.Ä. Salome heißt, muss es sich um die Mutter von Jakobus d. J. handeln.

Nach Johannes 19,25 (der sonst sehr sparsam mit Hinweisen auf Verwandtschaft ist) stehen unter dem Kreuz Maria, Jesu Mutter und Maria, die Schwester seiner Mutter und Frau des Klopas sowie der Apostel Johannes (den der Herr lieb hatte). Das ist zunächst nicht einfach mit den anderen Berichten überein zu bringen. Zunächst kann eine Schwester der Maria nicht auch Maria heißen, es sei denn es handelt sich wie oben bereits vermutet um eine Patchworkfamilie. Ein Klopas taucht sonst nicht auf, aber die Tatsache, dass eine Maria anwesend ist, die nicht Salome, die Frau des Zebedäus und Mutter des Johannes sein kann, da dieser ebenfalls dabei ist und der Tatsache sonst Erwähnung getan worden wäre, könnte es die Frau des Alphäus sein und somit die Mutter von Jakobus d.J., Judas Thaddäus und Simon. So wäre dann Alphäus zu Klopas geworden und die beiden Marias tatsächlich zu Stiefschwestern.

  Insofern ist die Malerei im Limburger Dom nicht zu weit von den Evangelien entfernt. Dass Elisabeth zur Nichte Annas wird und die Familie des Zebedäus ebenfalls zur Verwandtschaft gezählt wird, lassen wir mal gut sein.

Was noch auffällt ist, dass bei den Frauen am Kreuz und bei den ersten am Grab immer auch Maria Magdalena mit genannt wird, niemandes Frau und niemandes Mutter. Daraus haben andere Autoren geschlossen, dass es sich um die Frau von Jesus gehandelt haben muss. Der Maler im Limburger Dom gehört nicht dazu.

Die Namen der drei „Brüder Jesu“, die zu Aposteln werden, sind die einzigen, die dort doppelt vorkommen, zur Unterscheidung haben die anderen Beinamen: Jakobus der Ältere, Judas Ischariot und Simon Petrus. Was dauraus folgt, soll jemand anders sagen.

De nummerverwisseling

Wilhelmus Lenssen uit Beersdal wilde niet dat zijn zoon Karel Joseph (1846-1916) onder de wapenen ging om zijn dienstplicht te gaan vervullen.  Had hij zijn zoon nodig op de hoeve? Of bestond misschien wel het gevaar dat zijn zoon zou worden uitgezonden naar de Oost (Nederlands Indië) of de West (Suriname)? Met alle risico’s van dien zoals oorlogsgeweld en tropische ziekten. Karel Joseph was echter ingeloot en wel met nummer zeven. Geen geluksgetal in dit geval.

Willem ging dan ook op zoek naar een zogenaamde nummerverwisselaar die de plek van zijn zoon wilde innemen.

Wat is nou zo’n nummerverwisseling?

In de Franse Tijd werd de conscriptie ingevoerd, later gevolgd door de militie. Hoewel mensen zelf konden kiezen voor een militaire loopbaan, moest het vrijwilligersleger substantieel worden aangevuld. Dit gebeurde via loting. Deze lotingslijsten zijn nog te vinden in menig gemeentearchief. Wie werd ingeloot voor de nationale militie, moest gedurende de vijf jaren dienstplicht enkele malen onder de wapenen. Men hoefde de dienstplicht niet per se persoonlijk te vervullen. Men kon zich ook tegen betaling laten vervangen. Dat kon door een remplaçant of door een nummerverwisselaar.

In het geval een remplaçant werd ingehuurd, betekende dit volledige vervanging van de oorspronkelijke loteling, dat wil zeggen dat de vervanger alle diensten voor zijn rekening nam. Hiermee was uiteraard een fors bedrag gemoeid dat in de praktijk slechts voor weinig ouders (want die betaalden feitelijk) was weggelegd.

In het geval een nummerverwisselaar werd ingehuurd, werd alleen de betreffende dienst waargenomen, terwijl de ingelote persoon als dienstplichtige bleef ingeschreven. Een nummerverwisselaar was hiermee goedkoper dan een remplaçant. Als men àlle diensten wilde laten vervullen door een ander, had men gedurende de vijf jaren dienstplicht wel meerdere nummerverwisselaars nodig. Zodra een nummerverwisselaar zijn dienst voor iemand had opgeknapt, kon hij zich meteen weer beschikbaar stellen om voor een ander hetzelfde te doen, terwijl een remplaçant vervanger bleef van de ingelote dienstplichtige en zich dus niet opnieuw kon verhuren.

Toen in 1901 de algemene dienstplicht werd ingevoerd, kwam er een einde aan het remplaçantenstelsel en het systeem van nummerverwisseling.

Bij vrijwel iedere notaris bevinden zich akten van nummerverwisseling. In deze akten ontmoeten we zowel de wat rijkere lagen in de bevolking als hen die het niet zo breed hadden en (vaak noodgedwongen, soms ook op zoek naar avontuur) voor anderen de militaire dienst invulden.

De akte bij notaris Smeets

Op 13 april 1866 werd dan ook een akte opgemaakt bij notaris Smeets in Heerlen om Karel Joseph buiten de nationale militie te houden. De arbeider Jan Gerard Jozef Hertog was bereid gevonden om de honneurs waar te nemen. Hieronder de akte die toen werd opgesteld.

Den dertienden April achttien honderd zes en zestig comparanten voor Gerard Smeets, Notaris te Heerlen, Arrondissement Maastricht, Hertogdom Limburg, in tygenwoordigheid der twee na genoemde getuigen Willem Lenssen, in huwelijk met Elisabeth Cuijpers pachtende landbouwer, woonende te Beersdal, gemeente Heerlen, te eenerzijds en Jan Gerard Jozef Hertog, arbeider woonende te Heerlen ter ander zijde.

Welke verklaren te zijn overeengekomen als volgt. De Comparant ter eener zijde Willem Lenssen, verklaart aan tenemen als nummer verwisselaar bij de nationale militie voor zynen minderjarige zoon Karel Jozef Lenssen, loteling der gemeente Heerlen van de ligting des jaars achttien honderd zes en zestig, en daarbij getrokken hebbende nummer zeven.

Den comparant ter andere zijde genoemden Jan Gerard Jozef Hertog loteling der gemeente Heerlen van de ligting van hetzelfde jaar en daarby getrokken hebbende nummer acht en dertig.

En de comparant ter anderen zyde meergenoemde Jan Gerard Jozef Hertog, verklaart zich te verbinden om bij de nationale militie te dienen, als omwisselaar voor en in de plaats van genoemden Karel Jozef Lenssen.

En zulles onder de volgende voorwaarden dat de genoemde Willem Lenssen, aan den comparant ter anderen zyde als vergoeding voor deze nummer verwisseling zal betalen een som van honderd acht en tachtig gulden, eischbaar zodra genoemde loteling Karel Jozef Lenssen ter zake dezer nummerverwisseling niet meer aansprakelijk is, en opbrengende gemelde som enen jaarlijkschen interest van vijf tien honderd vanaf heden tot de aflossing toe. En betalingen zullen moeten plaats hebben in handen van de partij ter andere zyde ten kantoor van ons Notaris te Heerlen.

De verschenen personen zijn aan ons Notaris bekend. Waarvan acte Gedaan en verleden te Heerlen, ten deezen kantoor, op datum als voor in tegenwoordigheid van de Heer Cornelous Johannes Berger, opzigter van den waterstaat, en Mathijs Joseph Houmen, zaakwaarneemer beiden wonende te Heerlen, getuigen en onmiddelijk nu gedane voorlezing hebben de comparanten met dezelfde getuigen en ons notaris deze ondertekend

The history of CRO-MAGS is integral to the history of hardcore, it’s evolution from punk and the development of alternative music genres such as hardcore, cross-over, thrash metal, post punk and grunge to name just a few. Numerous iconic bands from METALLICA to GREEN DAY, and individuals such as Dave Grohl have credited CRO-MAGS with having had a primal influence on their development.

Born out of the violence and depravity of the Lower East Side of New York in the late 70's and early 80's, CRO-MAGS was the brain-child of a very young Harley Flanagan (at the time 14 years old) when still playing with THE STIMULATORS. By 1982/83 he wrote and recorded the very first CRO-MAGS demos consisting of  four songs that would become the blue print for the seminal 1986 Age of Quarrel. He wrote all of the music, played each instrument and sang. Before long he connected with Parris Mayhew and the two started writing music and auditioning band members.

After several line-ups, 5 studio albums (beyond the original demos) and 30 + years of tours around the world, CRO-MAGS remains one of the most iconic hardcore bands with arguably the greatest reach beyond the genre.  CRO-MAGS

In Harley’s words: “Lemmy came to me in a dream and said, ‘Take it back mate, it’s yours, you started it.’ The fact is, I never legally lost the name Cro-Mags, others were using it without my permission, while I was raising my kids. An agreement was struck with the previous members and I regained full control over the name worldwide. Now with an amazing line-up and two record deals I am moving forward. I have a great team of people behind me; I have never felt stronger, better or more creative.” And so bassist Harley Flanagan has reached a settlement with singer John Joseph and drummer Mackie Jayson regarding ownership of the CRO-MAGS name. Flanagan will now perform under the name CRO-MAGS while Joseph and Jayson will perform as CRO-MAGS "JM". In 2019 Cro-Mags signed with Victory Records and Arising Empire. The EP consists of 3 tracks, ‘Don’t Give In’, ‘Drag You Under’, and ‘No One's Victim’. Harley: “The lyrics are meant to inspire and kick you in the ass when you need it. Some might not take them that way, but that’s my intention.
