This photo, taken in April 1945, at the German Prison Camp "Stalag XII-A" in Limburg, Germany, shows Pvt Joseph G. "Joe" Demler (19 years old) of Port Washington, Wisconsin, shortly after the camp was liberated by American troops. During WWII, Joe served his beloved country with the 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, and took part in the deadly Battle of the Bulge.

He later recalled: "We were moving, but the weather was so bad. The snow was up to your hips. It was the coldest winter in Europe. I'm glad I had my overcoat"

The 19-year-old prisoner went through hell....but he survived, captured by the Germans on January 4, 1945.

Following the war, Joe returned to Port Washington, started a family, and worked 37 years at the post office. Joe passed away on February 5, 2020. He was 94 years old.
