Rereading Battle Tendency and I'm shocked by how little the fandom discusses the family dynamics. Speedwagon and Erina have different parenting styles, and that has a huge impact on shaping who Joseph is. Joseph was raised to be a little shithead!

From the very beginning of BT, it's established that Joseph's attitude is VERY different from Jonathan's. We're shown a flashback of Joseph's childhood.

When I first watched jjba, this scene surprised me. Joseph acts so aloof!! But now that I'm rereading it, I think Speedwagon told Joseph not to get involved beforehand. Or, as one of my followers on Bluesky mentioned, Joseph may have been acting like a brat in order to draw the robbers' attention away from Speedwagon.

Joseph snaps when the clothes Erina had given him get ruined. Joseph tells Speedwagon he'd do anything to protect them, as they're the only family he has.

From here on, Speedwagon is shown enabling Joseph's behavior. He's aware of Joseph's temper and bratty habits. But never once do we see Speedwagon scold or reprimand Joseph in any meaningful way, even when he's being reckless.

Speedwagon consistently responds in two ways. Giving Joseph a sideways glance or raising his voice...

"JoJo!" "JoJo..." "🥺" "😨"

In contrast to this... Erina is shown PHYSICALLY reprimanding Joseph when he steps out of line after he jokes about the implications of Speedwagon and Jonathan's relationship / Speedwagon and Erina's relationship (varies by translation)

However, Erina ALSO enables Joseph's behavior. But instead of Speedwagon's method of letting Joseph do whatever he wants, Erina guides Joseph on how to beat up a racist in public with STYLE. Joseph's sense of justice makes him wild & careless, so she teaches him how to stay in control while still doing the right thing.

Erina's background of an upper-class childhood, nursing career / teaching career, and her experience living as a woman in the 19th century shaped how she raised Joseph. Joseph inherited Erina's social intelligence, class, and kindness.

Speedwagon lived the majority of his life in the slums of London and was involved in organized crime. Speedwagon was also an oil tycoon. He's mastered the art of bartering. Joseph "inherited" Speedwagon's rebellious nature, street intelligence, and loyalty.

Joseph has a strong sense of justice, something ALL Joestars inherited from Jonathan.

But that sense of justice is what ultimately killed Jonathan and George. Erina and Speedwagon knew that Joseph was destined to get into trouble.

I believe that Erina and Speedwagon raised Joseph in such a way that he could survive the worst. And he did. Joseph is the only Joestar in the entire series that is shown to live into old age. He survived all that because of Erina and Speedwagon's love for him.

“I see… Well, don’t worry, I’ll take care of it for you,” he assures, proceeding to carefully relocate the spider outside like the kind soul he is.

“Jeez, you really had me worried! Don’t do that again!” But he still squashes the spider for you (after teasing you about it first).

Sigh. The moment he sees you crying, he’s immediately on alert. “Tch. What happened?”

His eyes narrow, scanning the surroundings for any threats.

You try to explain through sobs, and when the word “spider” finally comes out, he just… stares at you.

He looks at you, looks at the spider, then looks back at you. His soul is tired.

“Yare yare daze… You’re seriously crying over this?”

He ends up getting rid of the spider for you, but not without calling you a “pain in the ass” (softly, though).

Josuke Higashikata

“Oh my God! Babe, what’s wrong?!” Immediate panic mode.

He’s so worried and doesn’t even think- he just hugs you, rubbing your back.

“Who do I need to beat up? Tell me right now!”

The moment you sob out, “It-it was a spider!” his concern turns into disbelief.

“Wait. Wait. A SPIDER? ARE YOU FOR REAL?”

He groans, flops back dramatically, and mutters about how he thought it was something serious. But he’ll still kill the spider for you like the good boyfriend he is.

Giorno Giovanna

Stays completely calm even as you run to him in tears. “What happened?” he asks gently.

He’s mentally preparing for the worst. enemy Stand users, some tragic accident, etc.

“G-Giorno, there’s a s-spider…!”

He blinks. Once. Twice. Then

“Oh.” He’s visibly relieved but doesn’t say anything to make you feel bad. Instead, he calmly finds the spider and… turns it into a butterfly. Problem solved.

“There. It won’t bother you anymore,” he says, patting your head with a small smile.

“What?! What happened?!” She’s already in fight mode, fists clenched, ready to throw down.

When you finally tell her it was a spider, she just stares at you.

“You had me thinking you were DYING over a goddamn SPIDER?!”

Absolutely roasts you for it but still deals with the spider because she loves you.

“Next time, just tell me so I don’t have a heart attack, alright?” she huffs, crossing her arms- but you can see she’s still amused.

“Oh shit, what happened?!” Immediate panic, already bracing for the worst.

He’s gripping his hat, breathing heavily, waiting for the bad news.

“…It was a spider.”

He just squints at you like, seriously?

“You’re messing with me, right?”

He sighs dramatically but still flicks the spider away. “You owe me for this. I almost had a damn heart attack.”

Yes, of course!! (Can y'all tell who my favorite jojos are? lol) I had to think about this one, too, because I'm not sure which aspect of doppio's personality you wanted me to convey in the reader.

I just picked up on how he's polite, sorta clumsy, sorta weird, and is always getting himself into dangerous predicaments. Honestly, part 5 didn't give much about him away aside from him being an important plot device. I'm also assuming the reader is a stand user, and a member of whatever respective group each jojo belongs to.

Jonathan Joestar -

He finds your weirdness endearing, but he worries about how clumsy you can be sometimes. He really loves how sweet you are and feels you're very polite and respectable. He's such a gentleman. When you inevitably end yourself up in a bad situation, he does his best to keep you safe and get you out of it.

Joseph Joestar -

He's a little puzzled by you initially. He assumes you're not very smart because of your demeanor and how you always seem slightly confused. He gets accustomed to your strange ways pretty quickly, though. Honestly, HE'S probably the one getting the both of you into trouble, rather than it just occuring to you. He's quite clumsy himself, too, so you and him match each other's energy.

Jotaro Kujo -

Whenever you fall or get yourself hurt on accident in a fight, he acts like he's just annoyed at you. The poor guy is FREAKING OUT on the inside, though. As stoic as he is on the outside, he's so worried about you and he cares a lot. He just doesn't know how to say it, so he utters a typical "good grief" whenever you get yourself into an unsafe situation and does what he can to fix it. He'd totally throttle anyone who made fun of you for being a bit of a weirdo, too. Also, he can't take how nice you are to him. Most people who are attracted to him are just annoying fangirls, so the way you treat him like your equal and speak to him like he's actually someone you respect, rather than some kind of weird high school celebrity like his "fangirls" do, is a real breath of fresh air for him.

Josuke Higashikata -

Oh, this boy. Bless his heart. You stress him out so bad. He adores how sweet you are towards him, but he's constantly worried about you and you make him extra grateful that he has a stand with healing powers, considering the sheer amount of times you've ended up injured unintentionally, even outside of stand fights. All of his friends are really odd people (which I guess is to be expected, considering they're all highschoolers), so he doesn't mind your quirks at all. He's glad you're a little bit of a weirdo, because you get along with the rest of the duwang gang so well.

Giorno Giovanna -

Even though you're prone to getting into trouble, he trusts you to keep yourself safe enough. He knows that under how air-headed and naïve you seem, you're very smart and you can get yourself out of a pinch when you really need to. You're a very valuable member of the team, having had some pretty good ideas while on the mission to hunt down the boss. He was low-key kind of startled by how recklessly violent and frustrated you can be when you get into the heat of battle, though. He's very impressed by you and he really loves the way your brain works.

Johnny Joestar -

Worried and confused. He doesn't know what to do with you. He just kind of lets you be yourself and do whatever it is that you do, but he'd be really anxious when you got yourself hurt or most likely ended up falling off your horse at one point (much to Gyro's amusement). If we're being honest, you're a good match for Johnny, since he's kind of an asshole. When other people first meet the two of you, it's like when you go visit your aunt and she keeps insisting that her mean old cat hissing at you in the corner of the room is actually really sweet when he gets used to you. You're very outwardly friendly, and he's very outwardly skeptical and "mind your own business and leave us alone"-y. You balance him out very well.

Howdy everybody. We’re now going to hop to another Part 1 character that I like from JoJo. I’ll talk about Part 1 and 2 for him, so there’s some diversity.

Robert E.O. Speedwagon

Alright! Where to begin? I say his introduction was pretty neat, having the setting to be in a street, Ogre Street to be more exact. Definitely looks like a guy that could kick your butt with techniques and everything.

I mean, having a razor hat? That’s radical. He’s prepared for anything, man. The fact that he struck Jonathan with it, and he was still fine was kinda wild to me when I first watched Phantom Blood.

Speedwagon is definitely one of my favorite Jobros, because he’s so supportive of Jonathan and did whatever he could to help him out, and even Zeppeli. I remembered one scene where Zeppeli’s arm froze by Dio, and Speedwagon tried helping him by using the heat from his own body. Like…he’s such a good lad.

This scene was awesome too. Like, this is the scene where I thought it was the end of Phantom Blood at first sight because the fact that Dio “died”. Speedwagon saw that Jonathan was in danger, so he tried to take care of him.

Speedwagon is very righteous, and the fact he can “smell out” between good or bad is such a neat gimmick. I honestly have this thing too where if I’m around a person, I can get a general vibe from them, and see if I should remain around them or not.

The fact that Speedwagon is the only person not wielding Hamon or any superpower, and just uses weapons is unique to me. Like he can still fend himself because he has to, he’s been in the streets so he constantly fights. Bet you that he got his scar from a street fight too. He fight off a zombie and does just swell.

And lastly, a bit about Part 2 Speedwagon. He’s now a businessman, and does well in the oil industry and later in the Speedwagon Foundation. Like, he’s helped out Joseph Joestar too as a teen, and as an adult. Speedwagon’s death is so significant, because in some shape or form, the Speedwagon Foundation always helped the Joestars. He might’ve been a rich man at this time, but a very good hearted rich man. Something I truly respect from him.

In my opinion, Speedwagon is loved by so many people. There’s nothing to despise about him, he’s just a street lad who did his best in life, supported those he cared for, and carried on that kindness towards the Joestar Bloodline.

Jonathan won’t ever try make you do anything you don’t want but he would be interested to see your invisible hands fight and he even tries to touch your STAND. He simply encourages you and compliments you about your amazing ability in the STAND! You have additional greatness, alongside your amazing personality

Jonathan is mainly just so interested and curious to learn more about a STAND user, everything they haven to offer

Pendleton Erina

Erina is frightened by how you’ll be in one spot before she blinks but once she does, you’re somewhere else. She can’t be seeing things! That’s impossible… so what are you doing? She is kinda too shy to ask about it but the way she acts, it’s obvious she wants to

Erina wonders if this magical ability of yours is dangerous or not as you insist to her it’s harmless whilst making a object ‘float’ in midair. She can’t see it… so what are you referring to? She does believe you as you speak, but at the same time, she just wants to see this creature you have described to her herself

Erina is such a polite girl. So, she keeps most of her questions to herself and she tries to keep out of the way of your STAND but if you have it pick her up from falling over, she will be frightened by the invisible hands but thankful to your own kindness. If you let her, she’ll try touch your STAND

Erina may be a bit suspicious about such a existence, but she does believe you and would love to learn more about a STAND user

DIO

DIO cannot believe your STAND is so much like his The World that he is completely interested in you straight away. You can stop time as well? He must know exactly the limits and abilities of your time-stopping STAND to figure out how it ties to The World

DIO is annoyed by how you don’t use your STAND for the right reasons but for such nonsensical reasons. STANDS are built for battle and you’re using your extremely powerful one to do such mundane tasks since you proclaim; “it is more comfortable for you”. Don’t be such a moron!

DIO may have a matching ability to yours but not even he can predict nor notice you using the time stop. You’ll be somewhere as he turns away then you’ll be gone from the room when he turns back. DIO knows to always be ready as your STAND and The World can openly clash

DIO knows of STAND users but a STAND user with the same ability as his has his undivided attention and fascination

Erina is SO MUCH MORE than just a "Generic Love Interest" that was brought in the story to continue the bloodline after everything that happens (and it's made abundantly clear time and time and TIME AGAIN that she means everything to Jonathan, to a point that she was his exact reason to standing up against Dio for the first time) but without fail she's only ever allowed to be the supportive best friend. Or a wingman for Jonathan and whoever he's being shipped with. Or simply supposed to sit there and allow her husband to have a male lover (the amount of posts I've seen of ppl using the excuse that 'it was very common back in the Victorian Era for men to keep male lovers that their wives were aware of and quietly accepted so it isn't a stretch to say that Erina and Jonathan wouldn't be the same--especially given how progressive she's written". Or of course my favorite when they completely erase her from the narrative and pretends she doesn't exist Jonathan's got their son for some reason, but nope she ain't there! 

a lot of times ppl who ship her CANON HUSBAND jonathan joestar with speedwagon will put her on the back burner of HER OWN CANON RELATIONSHIP in favor of propping up jonawagon, to the point where 90% of the archive for jonawagon/jonawagon(eri) is either erina giving jonathan and speedwagon consent to be happy together while she acts like a #LoveIsLove wingman OR they'll have the audacity to write fics where erina comforts speedwagon at HER HUSBAND'S FUNERAL

Our hero’s hot wife who was the first (and arguably) only person to give him the emotional support he needed. She’s the only person who never expects him to fulfill some mythical role, she just loves him for who he is. She’s been his best friend and the love of his life since he was 12 years old. When it comes to hero/sidekick ship, she’s forced to be a wing woman for her own husband, either nobly letting him go or peacefully agreeing to an open relationship but only for him!!! She gets nothing out of it, she’s just a good Victorian wife who is “ahead of her time”. Usually, just so she can provide a womb so that the hero/sidekick can be dads and she can conveniently be offscreen. OR she’s written as a lesbian in order to completely and “justifiably” take her out of the equation but there’s a.) no other woman in her vicinity to even ship her with b.) there’s vaguely some faceless, nameless woman we’re meant to assume she’s pursuing, not even a real OC for her.

All she's literally ever done is have a few cute exchanges with Joseph and be a sweetheart in the short time we get to see her following her minor introduction, clearly cementing some sort of playful attraction between the two and without fail she's consistently bombarded with extreme mischaracterization to make her seem vapid and cruel (and occasionally homophobic but like in a Completely Oblivious Dumb Blonde way), that she's nothing more than a gold digger who wanted to marry rich, that Joseph only married her because "he lost his actual soulmate and had to settle for her", and that it was HER fault that Joseph cheated on her decades into their marriage. Frankly, everyone who makes jokes at Suzi Q's expense regarding the cheating scandal aren't as funny as they think they are!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

Literally all she’s ever done is be adorable and marry the hero and people either dismiss her completely or demonize her. She’s often ignored or made to play wing woman for the hero/sidekick ship OR she’s a horrible gold digger who only wants the hero for his money and/or she was only ever just a consolation prize for him when he couldn’t be with his sidekick. She also gets blamed for her husband having an affair. People like to say that she wasn’t good enough for him and could never replace his sidekick and that clearly he never REALLY loved her and it’s her fault for never measuring up. Her husband’s infidelity aside, she stayed married to that man for at least 60 years and canonically says she always believes in him and trusts him to save the day and yet people wanna say she doesn’t care about him. Or call her stupid for never imagining that her husband would cheat on her. The victim blaming gets really gross.
