JOSEF FRITZL
1935
In 1984, Josef Fritzl from Austria lured his daughter Elisabeth, 18, into the basement and kept her there to constantly abuse and rape. He told his wife Rosemarie and his children that Elisabeth ran away to join a cult. During confinement she had seven children, one died, three lived upstairs and three remained downstairs with her.
In 2008, her oldest daughter, Kerstin, 19, fell ill from kidney failure and she begged Fritzl to take her to the hospital. Staff were instantly suspicious, and when Fritzl permitted Elisabeth and her two sons to visit Kerstin; the police were alerted and Elisabeth exposed her father’s crimes.
Rosemarie alleged she knew nothing about his crimes which is hard to believe, she would have been suspicious of his actions and knew he spent a large amount of time in the basement. She never questioned or investigated why three of her daughter's children turned up on their doorstep.
Fritzl showed no remorse for his crimes and was found guilty in 2008 and got life imprisonment (he is eligible for parole next year in 2025). In prison, he has had his teeth knocked out.
Elisabeth initially was living with her mother and children in a villa, however, there was tension and resentment between mother and daughter and Elisabeth threw her mother out of their home. Today, they are on speaking terms.
Fritzl was a retired engineer who had a history of violence. In 1967, he broke into a woman’s home, threatened her life and held a knife to her and then raped her. He was convicted and imprisoned. Rosemarie knew of this crime and stood by him and told outsiders that he was away on a holiday. He started sexually assaulting his daughter Elisabeth when she was 11, Elisabeth grew up rebellious which Fritzl didn’t like, and made the decision to force her away from the outside world.

The Fritzl Case
Tumblr media
The Fritzl cases refers to a woman named Elisabeth Fritzl, who was held captive by her father, Josef Fritzl, for 24 years in their family home.
On 28th August 1984, after Elisabeth turned 18, Fritzl lured her to the basement of the family home. He then knocked Elisabeth out and sealed her in a chamber he had built for that purpose. A missing person case was opened and Elisabeth was forced to write letters to her family, which were to be given to the police, saying that she had run away and not to look for her. Fritzl claimed Elisabeth had joined a cult.
Over the next 24 years, Fritzl visited Elisabeth almost every day bringing her food and supplies but also repeatedly raping her. Elisabeth gave birth to seven children during her captivity- one died shortly after birth and three were removed from the cellar and lived with Fritzl and his wife as foster parents. Fritzl claimed the infants had been left on his doorstep by Elisabeth and authorities allowed him to care for them with no suspicions.
When Elisabeth's next child was born Fritzl expanded the prison, forcing Elisabeth and her children to dig the soil with their bare hands. At times he turned off their lights or did not give them food to punish them. Fritzl told Elisabeth and the three children who stayed with her that they would be gassed if they tried to escape.
In April 2008, Fritzl agreed to seek medical attention when the eldest of Elisabeth's daughters living in the basement fell unconscious. Elisabeth helped carry her daughter out of the prison and the daughter was taken to hospital and found to have life-threatening kidney failure. Fritzl later arrived at the hospital claiming to have a letter written by the girl's mother. Medical staff grew suspicious of his story and sent out an alert for the missing mother to provide information about her sick daughter's medical history. The police reopened the missing person's case for Elisabeth. Experts noticed Elisabeth's letters seemed oddly written and dictated.
Elisabeth pleaded to be taken to the hospital to see her unwell daughter, eventually her father agreed. Following a tip-off, police were alerted that Elisabeth and Fritzl were at the hospital and detained the pair.
Elisabeth would only provide details to police when they assured her she would never have to see her father again. During a two-hour testimony, she told a horrific story. Elisabeth told police that Fritzl had raped her and forced her to watch pornographic videos and re-enact them in front of her children. Josef Fritzl, aged 73, was arrested and Elisabeth and her children were taken into care. DNA later confirmed him to be the biological father of all of Elisabeth's children.
Josef Fritzl was sentenced to life imprisonment where he remains.

The Fritzl account.
I was inspired to chose the Fritzl account towards my project after a discussion to better my brief with Alan. He had mentioned that he and Colette had recently watched a documentary about the man. This inspired me to dig a little further and i found a selection of articles all detailing the events but in very different ways. I have included a selection to decipher the evidence required to related to one of the Brothers Grimm tales or to relate to a Folklore tale of some sorts.
