12 Days of Ficmas Day 8 - Trio Royale

If Akira was being honest, he really didn’t want to go through a palace without him team. Akechi and Sumire were good to have around, but a blood knight and a girl who just reawakened weren’t the best people to do a mission of this caliber with. However, it was going well, so he figured that this would work with just the three of them.

He was proven wrong.

“Joker,” Akechi called to him, “it seems like these cables extend well past this palace.”

Akira looked at the screen Akechi was pointing to, showing the central location of the cables. “The depths of Mementos?”

“What’s ‘Mementos?’”

“That’s right, you haven’t been there. Mementos is like a palace, but it’s one that anybody can appear in, and it’s everyone’s palace. Most of the hearts we changed were people in there.” Morgana and Futaba were better at explaining Mementos and the collective unconscious, but Akira didn’t have them at the moment. “Guess we’re heading there next. Let’s head out for now.”  The trio made their way back to the entrance, and soon found themselves back in the real world. “Sumire, meet us at Shibuya station tomorrow. We’ll go to Mementos then.”

As Akira hung out in the attic that evening, something didn’t feel right about their plan. He wasn’t sure what, but he knew it was something important.

He knew what it was as the three of them stood at the first platform of Mementos.

“Well, Joker, how do you propose we get down there?”

“Couldn’t we just take the train? It seems to be running here, somehow.”

“We could, Violet, but we still need to get to that platform.”

“How could you not realize—“

“Crow, if you finish that sentence, I swear I will—“ Akira was cut off by the sound of a horn. The three turned to find a car that had just appeared. Driving it was a young boy.

“Hey, mister!”

“Jose! I have a favor to ask.”

“Sure thing! Let me set-up camp first, then we can talk.” Jose drove off to a dead end in front of them. The three of them exchanged looks, wondering if it would be safe. Akira shrugged and carefully stepped off the platform and onto the tracks below. Sumire jumped off after him, followed by Akechi a few steps later. They made their way to the main portion of the floor before stopping. After looking both ways to check that the coast was clear, they dashed to the other side to reach Jose before Shadows chased after them.

Finally Done! This took wayyyy longer than expected but I've managed to get it finished! Yayyyy! ^w^ This is based on a Vocaloid Trend I saw on TikTok and I thought "Hey! It would be cool if I did one base on my Favorite Persona 5 fanfic 'marigolds' by colbub!" mostly because I'm still hyperfixated on it lol.

Jose's connected to Yaldabaoth somehow and here's why I think so. Because I think about this occasionally and it's fun

I haven't played P5R in years so it's totally possible I'm missing stuff/misremembering things oops. I'm gonna try and keep things brief

Appearances

Yaldabaoth has somewhat-vague bird imagery. Okay yeah it's feathers because he's an angel, but also his face markings make it look like he has a beak. He's a bird.

Jose's "hair" looks like an egg shell. Birds hatch from eggs. I rest my case.

The more serious connection though... Yaldabaoth is very mechanical and robotic, a quick look at Jose and it's obvious that he isn't human either. His "hair" looks metal, or at the very least isn't real hair. His ears too (and maybe his nose but it may just be shading) look like they're a separate piece attached to his head. These two have similar colour schemes too, mostly silver/white with some gold. Even the placement of their colours is similar? Most of Yaldy's body is bright silver, with darker metal underneath. Jose is wearing a white coat with dark grey under that. Yaldabaoth has gold around his neck, Jose has his gold-ish goggles around his neck.

Mementos

Jose never leaves Mementos, so it's reasonable to assume that he was born there. It can be argued that Yaldabaoth was either also born there, or his creation lead to Mementos also being created, either interpretation works. It can be assumed, then, that Yaldy can manipulate Mementos however he pleases. Jose can do the same, but on a much smaller scale. This is odd, why can Jose manipulate the palace of the masses??? If he was related to the very treasure of Mementos, then it would make sense.

This is were my memory is foggy, but during the third semester, I'm fairly certain Jose is upset by new Mementos. It seems like he prefers Yaldy's Mementos, and now that he's not around, it upsets him. This is probably a huge stretch, but I'll explain later why I think it's Yaldabaoth's absence that's upsetting to Jose.

Personalities

Obviously these two are really really different. Yaldabaoth is malicious and controlling, while Jose is very sweet and is very curious about humans. Yaldabaoth is controlling because it's what humanity yearns for. Humanity unconsciously caused Yaldy to manifest, now he is his own entity who, even though he says he is only doing what humanity wants, he could probably do whatever he wanted. He has free will, he can speak, think, etc. So that brings me to the question:

What is Jose?

I think it's super fun to take all of this and interpret Jose as being a part of Yaldabaoth that is much much nicer. His own curiosities and intrigue of humanity manifesting into a small robotic child who's in awe of mankind. Jose appears more human than Yaldabaoth because of his desire to learn more about them. Jose doesn't like new Mementos because part of him is gone, the area is now unfamiliar and hostile towards him.

It's possible that I'm looking wayyyy too far into the parallels, but it's a fun thought nonetheless! I don't think the person Jose talks about is Yaldabaoth (though that would be fun if it was), mostly because he describes him as being "harsh but nice". Yaldy's definitely harsh, but he isn't nice. At all. I don't see him having a soft spot for Jose either, if he knew of his presence he'd probably be really annoyed, but that's me speculating

I may have missed some things, or misremembered something entirely. Regardless, there are my thoughts, shout out to the maybe four other Yaldy fans, here are more of my crumbs for you

P5R: Rebel Girl (A FeMC Story/P5R Rework) Chapter 238: The Shoe Fits My Little Cinderella

At school the next morning, Ren was on her way to class when she whipped out her phone. She was starting to message the group about how she thought that today was a good day to get started on Shido’s palace. However, as she was typing out her message, she bumped into someone. “Sorry,” she said.

“It’s OK,” Sumire replied. Ren looked up to see her girlfriend. “I was actually about to text you.”

“Oh,” Ren said. “I was going to actually text the group. I thought today we could get the jump on Shido’s palace.”

“Oh,” Sumire replied. “Well, if you think so…”

Ren sensed Sumire’s concern. “What did you have in mind?”

“Well,” Sumire began, “as you know, I have my competition coming up.” Ren nodded. “Between that and Shido’s palace, things are going to get very busy. Also, facing off against Shido and Akechi is going to be tough. I know you like to play it cool, but I can understand if facing off against your accuser is a little tense for you.

So I thought before we get started, we use today to just take a day for ourselves. Just the two of us. We can just relax and feel alive before going through the depths of whatever Hell Shido plans to put us through in order to make him pay.”

“Oh,” Ren replied, slightly blushing.

“But if you think we should just jump in…” Sumire continued.

“No no no no no,” Ren said. “That’s a fantastic idea. I can, uh, I can just change it so that we can go in tomorrow.”

Sumire’s eyes started to gleam. “Really?!”

Ren smirked. “Yeah. Yeah. I think this is important. Besides, like you said, things are going to get hectic. I think taking some time for ourselves is good.”

Sumire giggled. “Well then, see you after school?”

“Yeah,” Ren answered.

“Great!” Sumire nodded. “See you then.” She walked off. Ren also started walking. She got her phone back out and edited her message.

Ren: Hey, I think we should start to tackle Shido’s Palace tomorrow.

Ann: I’m down.

Ryuji: Wait, “start to”?

Ryuji: What makes you think we can’t get this done in one foul swoop?

Futaba: “Fell swoop”.

Ryuji: What?

Futaba: The term is “One fell swoop”.

Ryuji: Oh.

Ryuji: What’s a fell?

Makoto: It’s an old word that’s stuck around only in this instance.

Makoto: Otherwise, people don’t use it as much.

Ryuji: I see.

Ren: To answer your question, I think Akechi might try to impede our progress.

Ren: So I think it’s imperative that we try and get some of it done as soon as we can.

Yusuke: Well, I have no objections going tomorrow.

Jose: Same.

Lena: I’m glad it’s tomorrow, and not the day after.

Lena: I have plans.

Ren: Well, I was going to suggest today, but something came up on my end.

Haru: I think tomorrow works better for me anyway.

Haru: There’s another meeting at Okumura Foods that I want to take part in.

Ren: Well then, it sounds like tomorrow is perfect.

Ren: See you all then!

Sumire: Can’t wait!

Ren put her phone away, and headed to class.

After school, Ren headed out to meet up with Sumire. Upon finding her, she said “Hey.”

Sumire chuckled. “Hey.”

“So, um, Ren wondered, “do you have a plan, or are we just winging it?”

Sumire chuckled again. “I had a plan going into today. I just wanted to surprise you with it.”

“Ah,” Ren replied. “Well it’s a good thing you caught me when you did.”

Sumire chuckled some more. “Well, I think our relationship can be defined by ‘right place, right time.”

Ren chuckled nervously. “I just wish we met before…If we did...”

Sumire caressed her girlfriend’s face. “Don’t think like that. We can’t change the past. You taught me that, remember?”

Ren smiled nervously. “Right.”

Sumire slightly frowned. “I do miss her every day.” She smiled. “But I feel like I’m making the most of it. It wasn’t easy,” she pulled Ren in, “but with you by my side, I knew I could do it.”

Ren blushed, smiled, and hugged Sumire. “I knew you could do it too.” They finished their hug. “So then, all that aside for now, what’s on the agenda?”

“I thought you’d never ask,” Sumire said. She took Ren’s hand and started leading her. “I’ll show you the way.”

Ren was puzzled. “So, you want this to be a surprise throughout?”

“Yup!” Sumire replied, cheerily.

Ren smirked. “Well then, lead the way.” Sumire giggled, and the two were on their way.

Sumire led Ren to a salon. “Here’s our first stop!”

“A hair salon?” Ren wondered.

Sumire nodded. “They do more than just hair. You can get a facial, get your nails done, it’ll be nice.”

“Well, I suppose I could at least use a trim…” Ren remarked. “And all that other stuff sounds fun too.”

“Hm hm. That’s the spirit,” Sumire chuckled. “Besides, my great-aunt owns this place, and my second aunt operates it.”

“Oh!” Ren replied, surprised.

“Kasumi and I would usually get a discount once a year on a full treatment,” Sumire explained. “However, now that she’s not here, there’s no one else I’d want to share the experience with.”

“Hm,” Ren smiled and blushed. “Well then, by all means.”

Sumire nodded. She opened the door and walked in, with Ren following behind her. “Hello!”

“Oh, hello Sumire!” the clerk said. “Are you here for your joint appointment?”

Sumire nodded. “That’s right!” She gestured to Ren. “This is Ren.”

Ren waved nervously. “Uh, hello.” She went up to Sumire’s ear and whispered “Are we telling them?”

Sumire whispered back “Considering my second aunt is also a lesbian, I think we’re OK.”

Ren chuckled. “Gotcha.” They broke off from their mini-huddle.

Sumire continued “Ren here is my girlfriend!”

“Oh!” the clerk replied. “Congratulations!”

“Thanks,” Sumire said.

“Well then,” the clerk said, “you’re all set to go in. Ren, you’ll be with Hanae, while Sumire, you’re getting your aunt Aya.”

“Sounds great!” Sumire said. They started walking over.

“Just out of curiosity,” Ren asked, “is she your dad’s cousin, or your mom’s cousin?”

“My dad’s,” Sumire explained.

“I see,” Ren said.

They met up with two women. One had long, thin, black hair, tied in a low ponytail with a black bow, and glasses. The other had big, fluffy, lavender hair, with a mint-colored bandana in her hair. The lavender-haired lady spoke “Why hello Sumire!”

“Hello aunt Aya!” Sumire replied.

She looked over at Ren. “This must be the Ren I’ve been hearing so much about.”

Both Ren and Sumire were shocked. “How…how much has dad been telling you?” Sumire asked.

“Only good things, honey,” Aya said. “I think it’s wonderful that you found someone. And it’s nice to see you smiling again. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how long it’d take after…well, I hate to dredge up bad memories…”

“It’s fine,” Sumire said. “It’s a valid question. And the answer is a lot longer without her.” She pulled Ren in a little.

Aya smiled. “Why, isn’t that wonderful!” She turned to Ren. “Well, rest assured Ren, you’re in very capable hands with Hanae here.”

“Pleasure to meet you,” Hanae said.

Ren nodded. “Likewise to…all of you, I suppose.”

“Well then,” Aya said. “Shall we get started?” They separated off into their chairs.

Hanae was looking over Ren. “Your hair is on the shorter end.”

“Right,” Ren said. “I wouldn’t mind a bit of a trim. Not a whole lot, really. Sumire told me that you also do facials and nails and stuff?”

“I can do that,” Hanae said. “But I could do a bit to treat the hair as well. Make the style POP a bit more.”

“I’d like that,” Ren said.

“Hm,” Hanae smirked. “Well then, you’re going to like how you look after I’m through.” She got to work.

Meanwhile, Sumire was discussing something with her second aunt. “Sumire, are you sure?” Aya asked.

“Positive,” Sumire said.

“Well then…” Aya said. She composed herself. “I’m sure it’ll look good on you!”

Sumire chuckled. “I’d also like some of the other stuff as well.”

Aya scoffed. “Honestly Sumire, what do you take me for?” She also began to work on Sumire.

As time passed by the girls got their hair done, as well as getting their nails done, a facial, and getting a scalp massage. Once Ren was finished, she noted “Man, I haven’t felt this relaxed after a salon appointment…well, ever.”

Hanae chuckled. “We aren’t the best in the business for nothing.” She turned Ren toward the mirror. “So, what do you think? I gave your hair a little more volume. Honestly, I’m kind of jealous of how your hair curls like that.”

Ren looked at herself in the mirror. Sure, it was just a trim, but Hanae made it look amazing while maintaining the style. She smiled and looked up. “It looks great. And for what it’s worth, I think your hair suits you.”

Hanae smiled back. “Thank you.” Ren got out of her chair and dusted some of the loose hairs off of her as best she could. She walked over to the front to wait for Sumire.

A little later, Aya came by. “Ahem! Presenting the new Sumire Yoshizawa!” She stepped away, revealing Sumire.

Ren was surprised. She only got a trim, but Sumire got an actual haircut. She was now sporting a shoulder-length bob-cut that was rounded inward at the edges. Sumire smiled. “What do you think?”

Ren composed herself, and smiled. “I think it looks amazing.”

Sumire giggled. “Thanks.”

Ren walked over and took Sumire’s hand. She then leaned in and kissed her. “It really suits you.”

Sumire was stunned, but was ecstatic. “Thanks. You look really good yourself.”

“I know, right?” Ren said. “This place is top notch! I don’t know why you’ve been keeping this secret.”

“Well, a lot has been on my mind,” Sumire said.

“Oh. Right…” Ren said.

Sumire smiled. “But I don’t see why not at this point.”

“I’m sure they’d love it,” Ren said.

Sumire giggled. “Well now, are we ready for the next part of the plan?”

“You know it!” Ren said.

Sumire gave Ren a quick kiss. “Well then, let’s go!” She took Ren’s hand again and led her out. “Thanks aunt Aya!”

“Come by anytime!” Aya yelled back. The young couple were out of sight soon enough. Aya placed a hand on Hanae’s shoulder. “Isn’t young love something else?”

Hanae put her hand on Aya’s. “I like what we have too.” The two then shared a kiss.

Aya giggled. “I like it as well.”

Meanwhile, Ren and Sumire arrived at the movie theater. Ren looked it over. “Well, I know no horror movies…”

Sumire chuckled. “Do you really think I didn’t have this planned out as well?”

Ren was impressed. “You’re really pulling out all the stops, aren’t you?”

“Only the best for my girlfriend!” Sumire retorted. “Today, they’re doing a special anniversary showing of the first Sailor Crescent movie.”

Ren smiled a mile wide. “You know just how to spoil me.”

“Of course!” Sumire said. “Now let’s go! We don’t want to be late!” They got in line for the showing, and headed into the theater.

Once inside, the movie began. The theater was packed with fans of all ages. Despite that, Ren and Sumire felt them fade away, and found themselves enjoying the movie as if it were just the two of them in the theater.

Once the movie was over, Sumire and Ren left the theater. “Boy, no matter how many times I see it, it’s always so magical!” Sumire noted.

“I know!” Ren said. She took Sumire’s hand. “But this time around was more magical.”

Sumire playfully slapped Ren. “Oh you!”

Ren chuckled. “So, do you have anything else planned?”

“Just one more thing,” Sumire said. “Follow me!” The two of them left the theater.

As Sumire was leading the way, Ren had a question. “Hey, Sumire?” She looked back. “Not that I’m complaining, but what made you decide to change your hairstyle so drastically?”

“Hmm,” Sumire pondered. “How do I put this? Well, part of it is that I think it looks cute.” Ren nodded. “But the other thing is it just…felt right.” She played with her new hair a little. “I needed a defining line between who I was and who I am now. Whenever we…Kasumi and I, went in, we didn’t change it too drastically. But I always wanted to give it a try. And now, I feel like I can.”

“I see,” Ren said.

“I don’t know if I’m going to keep it like this forever or not,” Sumire went on, “but I don’t need to know. I’ve been fretting about the past and the future a lot, but thanks to you, I’m more in the moment.”

Ren rolled her eyes. “You say that like you didn’t plan this day for a while.”

“Well, that was a momentary planning, you know?” Sumire defended. The girls shared a chuckle. “C’mon. We’re almost there.” They two girls kept on walking. They soon arrived at their destination. “Ta-da!”

Ren read the sign. “‘Maruyama’s Ice Cream’.”

“Let’s go!” Sumire said, dragging Ren inside. “Hi there, Arata-san!”

“Sumire!” Arata replied. “Good to see you again! Nice haircut, by the way.”

“Thank you,” Sumire replied.

“And you brought a friend!” Arata noted.

“Well, not quite,” Sumire said. She gently hugged Ren’s arm. “This is my girlfriend, Ren.”

“Um, hello,” Ren said.

Arata was shocked. “That’s not a problem, is it?” Sumire asked.

“No. Of course not,” Arata replied. “I’m just surprised is all.”

“Well, for what it’s worth, I am too,” Sumire said. She looked into Ren’s eyes. “She always surprises me.”

Ren snicked. “You surprise me too, you know!” She turned to Arata. “This whole afternoon was one surprise after the next.”

Arata chuckled. “Well, that doesn’t surprise me at all.”

Sumire was confused. “It…doesn’t?”

“I’ve known you for a long time, kid,” Arata said. “I know how determined you can be when you get a fire in your eyes like that. I know you tended to follow your sister a lot, but when you wanted something for yourself, you would work hard for it.”

“Huh,” Sumire replied, taken aback. “I…I had no idea.”

“Really?” Arata asked. “Well, I’m sure it’ll come back to you sooner or later.”

“Well, even if it doesn’t,” Ren replied, “it seems to be serving her well now.”

“You know what?” Arata said. “You’re right! I can see what she likes in you already!” Ren nervously chuckled. “Well then, what can I get you?”

Sumire and Ren sat down next to each other at the counter. “I’ll take what I had last time: Strawberry with chocolate syrup.”

Ren looked over the menu. “I’ll take mint chocolate-chip with caramel.”

“Coming right up!” Arata said. A few minutes later, they had their ice cream.

Ren took a bite. “This is delicious!”

Sumire giggled. “In case you couldn’t tell by the level of intimacy between me and Arata, this is the place my sister and I would come after practice a lot.”

“Ah,” Ren replied. She kept eating. “Well, this is good ice cream! I can see why you came here.”

“Thanks,” Sumire said. They kept eating their ice cream for a little while. Soon, all that was left was the melted mixture. “Ooo! Do you think we could have each other’s melted ice cream?”

Ren shrugged. “I don’t see why not?” They exchanged bowls, and then drank out of them.

“Ah!” Sumire said. “You have such good taste.”

“Ah!” Ren said, finishing her’s. “This tastes really good too!” They shared a giggle.

Sumire smiled. “You know, I know I told you earlier that I didn’t want to be too caught up in thinking about the future, but I have a good feeling about the two of us being together forever.”

Ren was intrigued. “How come?”

“Hm,” Sumire replied, smiling ear to ear. “For a while now, even before Kasumi’s passing, I was so obsessed with being like her. I thought Kasumi had everything I could have ever wanted. She was seen as this unstoppable force, this beacon of light. I thought if I could emulate that, I’d be thought of like that too. But I never could. And all of that pressure led to tragedy.

Even still, it persisted. It felt like nothing I could do could break me out. But then I met you. And I knew I wanted you to see me for me, not as some husk of Kasumi. And your continued kindness helped me break free. And then getting to know you better, meeting our friends, gaining more friends, it just reinforced the notion that people want to see me for me. And none of that would have happened without you.

At the same time though, I noticed that kind of change in you as well. When we first met, you were giving off a tough vibe that seemed invincible to the world around you. Ren looked at Sumire, mouth agape for a few seconds. She then let out a single tear, before bursting out into a full cry. Sumire was concerned. “Are…are you alright?”

“Sorry,” Ren said. “It’s just…that was so beautiful…”

Sumire smiled. “Come here.” She invited Ren in for a hug, which Ren accepted with gusto. She patted Ren’s back as Ren clung to her. “There there. It’s OK.” Ren continued crying for a bit. She stopped, and propped herself up, while still holding onto Sumire. “Feeling better?”

“Yeah,” Ren said, still a little moved by Sumire. She sighed. “Thanks. I think I needed to hear it.”

Sumire grinned. “And I needed to say it.” They paused for a moment, and then shared a kiss.

Ren smirked. “Well then, if you don’t mind, I have an idea for how I’d like to cap off tonight.”

Sumire giggled. “By all means.” Ren took Sumire’s hand, and they left. "Bye Arata!" Sumire called out. As they left, Arata watched them, and shed a single tear, smiling.

A little while later, Ren and Sumire were nestled against each other in a ferris wheel overlooking the city. Sumire chuckled. “You’re right. This was the perfect way to cap off tonight.”

Ren chuckled. “But not as perfect as you are.”

Sumire slapped Ren again. “Stop it.” They shared another chuckle, and then another kiss to round out the evening. Once they made their way back down the ferris wheel, they left, and headed home for the night.
