Blue Jay
When Jafar learns Jay is a blue djinn, the beating is nothing like before to the point where once Jay escapes when he's 10. He doesn't go back to Jafar.
But he's hates that his magic color is blue. He starts to hate his magic, before it's just been something that was there but now he hates it.
But djinn are powerful, some of the most powerful in the world, repressing there magic is dangerous. Then he goes to Auradon, and where he use to have the barriers help to suppress his magic now he doesn't have that anymore.
He lasted all of 2 week before he started losing control of his magic and things started happening. Jay doesn't it so he finds some magic suppressing bracelets.
Which, a little fact, is Agrabah is illegal, because Aladdin and Jasmine know how bad they are. Too bad this isn't Agrabah though. Jay starts wearing them. But the problem is the reason why their illegal in Agrabah. The bracelets are like a leech. They don't just suppress magic, they leech off if it. Drain it from the holder. Jordan, our infamous daughter of Genie saw it on his wrists one day, and promptly, snitched to her dad.
Who actually broke his playful fun personality. He popped into Jays dorm uninvited with his arms crossed and eyebrow raised, looking like a disappointed father.
Genie calmed Jay down from trying to kill him. Jay say glaring at Genie. Genie got to the point and explained just how bad the bracelets are.
That they could completely get rid of his magic and it could kill him. Genie missed the gleam in Jays eyes when he said it could get rid of his magic. Jay acted like he was reluctantly listening and 'agreed' to take them off. He took them off infront of Genie and Genie took them, Jay hid a scowl at that.
Genie left, able to tell Jay didn't like him at all. Jay went back online and found the same pair, only they were designed like normal bracelets, even better. Jay got them. Jay wore them. Jay wore them for a solid month, but it left him exhausted and drained, Jordan snitches again. Because at this point she can hardly feel his magic. And Genie visits Jay again.
Jay is much more violent this time, all though Genie knows the bracelets may be boosting Jays anger. Genie reluctantly knocks Jay out and takes him somewhere where he can try and pry the bracelets off, they have almost merged to Jays skin in it's effort to suck all of Jays magic out.
While Genie also tries to pump some of his magic in Jay to keep him alive. Being careful not to overwhelm his body his magic and making sure the bracelets aren't trying to suck Genies as well.
And that's all I got

🌟 + Charlotte Cogsworth?
Thank you so much for this!! Gonna tag the Descendants gang @dancingsunflowers-ocs, @ginger-grimm, and @ginevrastilinski-ocs!! <3 <3
She absolutely adores fresh-baked bread, especially when Mrs. Potts makes it.
Her favourite ice cream flavour is chocolate chip cookie dough.
Although her future position on Ben’s royal council has always been pretty much guaranteed and she’s been training for it for most of her life, she still wants to go to college for political science and earn her degree before she takes up the position.
She calls Gil “sunshine” as a pet name, and he calls her “pretty girl”.
She’s pan and absolutely had a crush on Jordan, Genie’s daughter, when she was younger.
She really likes oranges and clementines but can’t stand peeling the veins out of them.
She absolutely adores ruby chocolate - Gil makes sure to get a big platter of strawberries covered in it for her first birthday after they get together.
She has never really liked Audrey and definitely hated her for Ben, but never voiced it until after Ben and Mal got together because she didn’t want to start any arguments.
Her parents have been divorced since shortly after she was born, and she’s never really had much contact with her mom - she knows she lives in the Summerlands and gets a card from her on all her birthdays, but they don’t really talk.
Harry eventually gains a sort of older brother protectiveness over her, which she wasn’t sure how to feel about but now kind of appreciates.

send me 🌟 + an oc and i’ll give you ten facts about them!!

Descendant's Character List Part One: AK's
I have been asked to make a list of characters who appear in my fics, both book canon and ocs, so... I apologize for how long this is going to be. (The only characters excluded on this list are those who appear in the movies).
This is everyone born before the first Descendants movie. I may add on to this list as time goes on and more characters are created. All ages are the ages at the time of D1. I headcanon that the first movie takes place in March-April of 2015, or A.C. 20
Alice:
"Ally" Allison (Canon) - First seen in Wicked World. I made "Ally" be a nickname. Longs to be a detective, and works at her mother's tea shop. 15
Aladdin & Jasmine:
Prince Aziz (Canon) - First mentioned in The Isle of the Lost. 17
Prince Amir (Canon?) - His name is said during the Tourney Game in the first movie, spelled Amir according to subtitles. His jersey says Emir, but I went with the "A" spelling and made him Aladdin and Jasmine's son. 15
Princess Jamila (OC) - The baby of the family. 12
Anastasia and Dimitri:
Princess Alina (OC) - 18
Prince Damien (OC) - 14
Princess Dasha (OC) - 13
Anna & Kristoff:
Prince Aleksander (OC) - Heir to Arendalle. His friend group consists of Pierre, Emery, Ruby and Erica. 18
Prince Aksel (OC) - Best friends with Elsie and Ben, good friends with Reiner. 16
Prince Asmund (OC) - 13
Princess Kari (OC) - Best friends with Eira. 9
Princess Klara (OC) - The youngest of the family, and friends with Clementine Charming. 7
Ariel & Eric:
Princess Melody (Canon) - First appeared in The Little Mermaid 2. She's quite a bit older than her little sisters, and is married with kids of her own (all ocs who won't really appear much). The only reason she hasn't taken over her parents kingdom was at King Beast's request to wait until Ben became High King. 32
Princess Abi (OC) - She is older than Ebba by only 6 minutes, but unlike her sister she doesn't have as strong of a call to the sea. With that said, she is still a mermaid. 16
Princess Ebba (OC) - Ebba loves the sea and everything to do with it. 16
Princess Elle (Canon-ish) I believe she was confirmed by Kenny Ortega. She was born without the use of her legs, but thanks to her grandfather, is able to transform into a mermaid. 14
Aurora and Phillip:
Prince Pierre (OC) - Audrey's older brother and heir to Aurora and Phillip's kingdom. He is dating Ruby Fitzherbert. 20
"Cinderella" Ella and Kit:
Princess Karine (OC) - Chad's younger sister. She's best friends with Reiner. 14
Prince Emil (OC) - He has not yet started at Auradon Prep. 11
Princess Clementine (OC) - 6
Elsa:
Erica (OC) - Inherited her mother's powers, but grew up in the Arendalle castle with her cousins at King Beast's "request". 19
Eira (OC) - Best friends with her cousin Kari. Unlike her sister, Eira got to be raised in Northuldra. She has powers similar to Elsa's. 10
Esmerelda & Phoebus:
Zephyr (Canon) - First seen in Hunchback of Notre Dame 2. Best friends with Li Shang Jr. 19 as of D1
Genie & Dalia (From the live action Aladdin)
Lian (Canon) - Seen in the live action Aladdin movie. 22
Omar (Canon) - Seen in the live action Aladdin movie. 21
Jordan (Canon) First seen in Wicked World. 15
Hercules and Megara:
"Herkie" Hyllus (Canon) - Mentioned in the books. I made "Herkie" a nickname while naming him after on of mythology-Hercules son's. 16 as of D1
Makaria (Kinda Oc) - Named after one of mythology-Hercules daughters. 15 as of D1
Merida & Feradach (Bravely book):
Marette (OC) - The eldest of Merida's triplets. Marette is a dreamer, and loves to be out in the highlands. 15
Moira (OC) - 1 hour younger than Marette, and 30 minutes older than Maisie. Moira is a warrior, she's trained to be one. 15
Maisie (OC) - The youngest of the girls and the most "lady-like". 15
Mulan & Shang:
Li Shang Jr (Canon) - Mentioned in Rise of the Isle of the Lost. 19.
Rapunzel and Eugene:
(I accidentally put Elsie and Reiner as 14. They are not. They are 15 in D1)
Prince Emery (OC) - Heir to Corona. 19
Princess Ruby (Wicked World) - She's in her last year of school and dating Pierre. 18
Prince Reiner (OC) - The heir to the Dark Kingdom. He's Elsie's fraternal twin, and his best friend is Karine Charming. He's also good friends with Aksel and Ben, partially due to his sister's friendship with them. 15
Princess Elsie (OC) - Reiner's fraternal twin sister. She's a lot more bubbly than her twin brother, and is best friends with Aksel and Ben. 15
Princess Edeline (OC) - She's not quite as friendly as her siblings, and is focused on ballet. 14
Princess Rosalind (OC) - She was a surprise baby and has her older siblings all wrapped around her finger. Along with most of Corona as well. 5
Robin Hood & Maid Marian:
Rowan Hood (OC) - 18 as of D1.
Bobby Hood (Canon) - 17. Mentioned in the books.
Mason Hood (OC) - 16 as of D1
Roger and Anita Radcliffe:
Rebecca (OC) - 15 as of D1
Andrew (OC) - 13 as of D1
Snow White & Florian:
Princess Sandra (OC) - 14
Princess Sascha (OC) - 8
Tiana & Naveen:
Princess Teresa (OC) - 17
Prince Tyrone (Canonish?) - His name is on a Tourney jersey, I just gave him parents and a personality. 16
Princess Naomi (OC) - She's best friends with Carolina, her Aunt Charlotte's daughter. 14
The Madrigals (Yes, I'm putting them all together):
Dominique (OC) - Dolores and Mariano's oldest. 8
Felix (OC) - Dolores and Mariano's son, named after his grandpa. Nicknamed Fe. 6
Ines (OC) - Isabella's oldest. 6
Emmanuel (OC) - Luisa's oldest. 6
Soraya (OC) - Isabella's youngest. 4
Catalina (OC) - Camilo's daughter. 4
Mercedes (OC) - Dolores and Mariano's daughter. 3
Lorenzo (OC) - Luisa's son. 2
Natalia (OC) - Camilo's daughter. 1

Brendan (Canonish) - He's on the Tourney team, I just gave him parents. Son of Big Nose and Assunta (Tangled: The Series). 17
Colton (OC) - Charlotte la Bouff's son. 17.
Carolina (OC) - Charlotte's daughter. Best friends with Naomi. 14
Arabella (Canon) - Seen in Rise of the Isle of the Lost, Arabella is one of Ariel's nieces. 14
Lorne (OC) - The daughter of Leezie, a character from the book Bravely. 14
Callum (OC) - The son of Leezie, and younger brother to Lorne. 12
Graham (OC) - Leezie's youngest child. 7
Pin (Canon) - Mentioned in Return to the Isle of the Lost. Son of Pinocchio. 13

I'm sorry if this is confusing! And with how long it is, there's not much to say about all the characters. But feel free to ask me about any of them, or even give suggestions for other Disney characters who might have kids!

Well I can't stop thinking about if Apple's Spirited was actually done on Broadway with Broadway actors so have a fancast
Disclaimer: This is literally just actors I like and know are currently active. There is very little thought put into this beside "ooo I love this voice and think it would fit the role p well." Feel free to dispute and brainstorm further in the reblogs/tags, but like there is genuinely 4% thought put into this, lmao.
Present (Will Farrell) - Jonathan Groff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The heart and soul of the show. Requires strong acting, strong vocals, and a stunning sense of humor. Honestly maybe this is just me being a simp but like I fully think he would have a gotdamn blast dressed up in Scrooge makeup for the 1800s scene and no one can convince me otherwise.
Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) - Jeremy Jordan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is it, the entire reason I made this fan cast. Just. Imagine Jeremy Jordan singing Bringin' Back Christmas. The same energy as Ready As I'll Ever Be, and also as The World Will Know from Newsies??? Like, that's barely anything, and he's perfect.
Kimberly (Octavia Spencer) - Khaila Anyé Wilcoxon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah okay I did sadly feel like I needed to slightly de-age Kimberly to match the younger form of Present; my original casting was NaTasha Yvette Williams and she would still slay this so hard, but like. Consistency, ya know? And besides, Khaila is STUNNING, fr; her performance as Catherine of Aragon is a testament to her skills alone, but if you want proof of her ability to sing gently as well as to Belt Like All Hell as she does in Six, then I will just direct you kindly to her role as one of the Fates in Hadestown; girl SLAYS! (Alternate pick: Renée Elise Goldsberry, because I can just HEAR her sing these songs.)
Jacob Marley (Patrick Page) - Patrick Page
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean. Come on. Even if he hadn't played this role already, he originated Hades in Hadestown. No one can top this guy.
Past (Sunita Mani) - Solea Pfeiffer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hadestown haunts the cast again, but like, come on. She's so good, no one can tell me no.
Yet-to-Come (Tracy Morgan) - Michael James Scott
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IDK something about his energy as Genie just translates really well to this role to me. (Alternatively, the Beetlejuice energy of Alex Brightman would give a REALLY fun twist to it, especially if the director decided to lean into YTC as a comic relief character, but the energy is just off enough I wanna stick to the source material for now.)
Wren (Marlow Barkley) - Isabella Esler
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay to be completely honest am I pretty much just pulling a random Lydia Deets out of a hat since they're like the only consistent kid actresses I can find? Maybe, lmao. That said, having heard her sing, she's GOOD fam! I think she could pull Wren really well!
Owen (Joe Tippett) - Justin Collette
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, so once again, he happens to be a Beetlejuice star, but the vibe check here really comes from his role in School of Rock! It's the same sort of offbeat-person-with-a-heart-of-gold vibe as Owen has in the movie, and like with him also playing the Beetlejuice to Isabella's Lydia, I think they'd do great as dad and daughter on stage. Alternatively, Will Burton (who played Adam in the same cast) would also be a great pick, but gives off some more panicky vibes that I don't feel are as great of a match to Owen.
Carrie (Andrea Anders) - Michaela Diamond
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you've seen her video on her favorite song from NYT, you Know the vibes.
Anyway that's my brainrot for the year thank you and enjoy—

Descendants Canon: Prologue
(The Auradon royal cousins/Auradon Jr Council)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Top to bottom: Ben Florian, Chad and Aricka Charming, Sebastian White and Audrey Rose.)
Our story begins with an iPad being flipped to a book, with the title Descendants. A young girl’s voice can be heard narrating; and this is what she says…
“Once upon a time, long, long ago... well, more like 20 years ago... Belle married her Beast in front of 6,000 of their closest personal friends.” She laughs. “Big cake. Yeah, so instead of a honeymoon, Beast united all of the kingdoms and got himself elected king of the United States of Auradon. He rounded up all the villains and sidekicks... basically all the really interesting people... and he booted them off to the Isle of the Lost with a magical barrier to keep them there.”
The iPad shows pictures of a decrepit wasteland; with rundown buildings, rotting trees and little to no food to be seen. “This is my hood. No magic. No wi-fi. No way out. Or so I thought. Hang on, you're about to meet us. But first, this happened…”
~~~~~~~~~~
In the United States of Auradon, several teens gathered in a secret meeting room in Château de Bête, where they had been planning a special proclamation since they were 12. The teens gathered were:
Crown Prince Benjamin Alexandre Florian I of the United States of Auradon.
Crown Prince Chadwick James Charming of Sardinia, and his twin sister, Crown Princess Aricka Claire Charming of Charmington.
Crown Princess Audrey Rae-LynnRose of Auroriaand Ulstead, and fill-in heir of the Moors.
Crown Prince Sebastian Alistair White of Hanover, and his little sister, Crown Princess Emma White of Misthaven.
Prince Doug Crystalsmith of Stonehaven.
Future General of Xiangyang, Li Lonnie.
Sultan in training Aziz Jaliyl Ababwa of Agrabah.
Crown Princess Ruby Eliana Fitzherbert of Corona.
Future Head Fairy Godmother Jane LaFae of Auradon.
Crown Princess Melody Daniels of Atlantica and Westerly Kingdom.
Genie-in-Training Jordan Dahlia Fadel of Agrabah.
And the twins of Enchancia, Crown Princess Amber Rhiannon and Prince James Declan Winslow.
They were the future of Auradon after all. They had to be better than their parents when it came to providing equal opportunities for everyone who deserved them.
~~~~~~~~
“Alright,” Ben addresses his future council. “Tomorrow is my final fitting for the coronation. I will also be announcing our first official proclamation to my parents. We all know which children we want to invite over. Do we all have our papers pleading those children’s cases?”
Aricka Charming, acting as Ben’s secretary in the moment, accepted the papers being passed forward and handed them to Ben, who slotted them into a briefcase next to him. “Thank you, Aricka,” he says, smiling gratefully at her. “Just so we’re all on the same page, let’s review the children I’ll be mentioning to my parents tomorrow.” He clears his throat. “I selected Mal Bertha; daughter of Maleficent. The daughter of the Mistress of all Evil deserves a chance to be good if she wants to be, and to have opportunities to be safe and in an environment where she can relax for once.”
“Jay Scheherazade. His mother knew he was kidnapped by his father when the barrier went up, and she’s been petitioning Auradon and Agrabah to rescue him for years, this is the least we can do for her.” That was Aziz. “That and nobody deserves to grow up with that man as a sperm donor.”
Audrey went next. “It was difficult for me to decide but after what our teams found out I believed the best choice was for me to pick Princess Evelyn Grimhilde. She has committed no crime against Auradon so her royal status should be respected and validated, and I know for a fact anyone living with someone like the EQ needs a chance to be free.” Jane and Aricka squeezed Audrey’s shoulders, knowing what she was implying.
Then Chad spoke, “I selected Carlos de Vil, because he has been at the mercy of that cruel woman for years, who knows what she did to him, we all know what she tried doing to the Radcliffe family. Anita and Roger also have expressed an interest in adopting him if he wanted them to. We would just have to be careful in exposing him to any kind of dog, big little or in between.” He looks at his notes. “He has a cat, maybe we could look into making the cat his emotional support animal.”
Aricka spoke up after her twin, “We all know I’ve been having dreams lately… dreams about a boy who is my True Love…” they all nodded. “I’m choosing Harry Hook, as he is the boy in my dream. However. My official reasoning for selecting him is that he has sisters as well, and in order for them to come they need to see that Harry is good, and I know he is. In my dreams he is nothing but sweet and kind and earnest, but he hides it under a mask of anger and rage and vengeance. If we get him away from his father’s influence he should thrive.”
“I’ve selected Uma Nautica, daughter of Ursula. She is a fierce leader and Ariel has also expressed an interest in getting to know her cousin, as Ursula is Ariel’s aunt. Melody and I both chose her as our pick, as she is from the Wharf side of the Isle and would know which of those children we should bring over as well.” That was Jane.
Lonnie was next, “I selected the only VK who was given special permission to leave the Isle six months out of the year to live with her stepmother Persephone; Aricka Kore Page. She will be able to help us help her fellow VKs acclimate and adjust to being in Auradon as she knows more of how things work over here, and she can also aide in the selection processes.”
“I chose Azalea Ixoria,” Sebastian White drawls, having sent Lonnie one of his dazzling white smiles, as Aricka Kore Page was also his girlfriend. “Daughter of a florist turned royal jeweler for the Queen of Hearts, one of the lesser villains on the Isle.”
Then came the one they were all most anxious to mention. “I have chosen Gilbert Legume,” Doug says. “Son of Gaston. Belle of all people should feel sympathetic for him, she knows just how toxic Gaston was, and we can use her sympathy to convince her to help us help Gil. He’s just a child, he deserves a chance. Just like any of them.”
They all nod, knowing they would have to have Gil be mentioned last, hating that he might be the only not able to be included this first wave just because he was born to Belle and Adam’s worst enemy.
“We can’t worry about that right now,” Ben pushes on. “We simply must make the proposal and then mention the children we want to come over in the first wave. These kids are the main players on the Isle. If we get the leaders over here: they can help us help their crew. We can get them to see that good really is worth it all.”
Murmurs of assent are heard, Jane Darling dutifully taking notes of the proceedings. “After the VK Isle Reformation Proclamation has been in place for a while, we will then move on to the Magical Creatures and Persons Act, allowing those born with magic or those who have been chosen to learn magic to be allowed to practice their arts in peace, much like the Northuldra in Arendalle do, or the people of Camelot.”
“We can restore the Moors to its original beauty,” Audrey says, remembering her mother’s stories of how beautiful it had once been.
“And we can work on getting homes for the VKs who were orphaned or who don’t want their villain parent to be their parents anymore,” Aricka added.
“Hear, hear,” Chad said. “We already have several parents interested- including Lathyn Baker; mine and Aricka’s aunt Anastasia’s husband. He’s eager to have his 19 year old son, Anthony, back home.”
“So it’s settled,” Ben says, and suddenly they could all see a glimpse of the future king he was to be. “I will make our proclamation known to my parents, and after that we will begin working on invitations for the future transfer students.”
They dispersed with hugs and plans to meet up for homework finalizations or for meals or just to hang out together, and Ben went to his own room to prepare for the most nerve wracking conversation of his life.
~~~~~~~~~ The Next Day ~~~~~~~~~
Ben assembled his council again, and when they all met in the secret room as usual they were met with a very exuberant and excited Prince Benjamin. “So,” he begins with a wild grin on his face. “Who’s ready to finalize the preparations for our new guests?”
Happy Belated New Year everyone! This is my first art piece of the year and one I've wanted to do for a while. It is an addition to my Genies n Ships seres featuring Jordan and Jay from Disney's Descendants Wicked World.
Descendants started as a live action movie featuring some of the kids of famous Disney characters including Jay who is the son of Jafar. After the second movie (if I recall correctly) it got an animated spin-off called Descendants: Wicked World which is where Jordan (Genie's daughter) got her debut. There's was hints at a mutual attraction between the two in some of the novelizations for the Descendants series but I always thought they would be a cute couple and it would be romantic for the children of two people who were enemies falling for each other. I got some design details off but I hopefully did both of them justice.
A tease for my next big piece is that features the Uplifted, animals from my Centauri universe that were modified to have human-level sapience.
Descendants and it's spin-offs belong to Disney.
As always, comments and critiques are welcome.
Disney’s Descendants and the Three Kingdoms
The casts and worlds of DISNEY’S DESCENDANTS and the DYNASTY WARRIORS series collide as the Auradon Kids and Villain Kids find themselves stepping right into the story of the epic struggle of power between the three kingdoms of Wu, Shu, and Wei in ancient China. On another day at Auradon Prep, Lonnie, Jane, and Ally find a mysterious book that follows the stories that contains all that ever happened in the kingdoms of Wei, Wu, Shu, and Jin and their struggle for power and control. But when they opened and turned its pages of this odd tome, however, they were all teleported into the book, along with their friends and the VKs. When they all wake up in the book's world and were completely separated from each other, the AKs and VKs have been somehow dressed as the characters within the narrative... Lonnie is on the Shu kingdom, ruled by Liu Bei and his sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fe. Jane is on the Wu kingdom, led by the Sun family. Mal and Evie are on the Wei kingdom, led by the Hero of Chaos, Lord Cao Cao, and the Cao family. And Ally...is with the Jin kingdom that ends the era.
Trapped by the book's magic, the VKs and AKs must work with each of the three kingdoms and follow their historical (and hypothetical) events to find their way back home.
Lonnie 蜀 (Shu) Arc follows the story from the perspectives of Lonnie, daughter of Mulan; and Jordan, daughter of Genie, joining forces with the sworn brothers, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei; Zhuge Liang, the Sleeping Dragon and the kingdom of Shu for its driving forces are harmony and hope.
Lonnie is paired with Guan Yinping, the daughter of Guan Yu; and later Xingcai, the daughter of Zhang Fei.
Jordan is paired with Zhuge Liang (i.e., a strategist soul)
Jane 呉 (Wu) Arc follows the story from the perspectives of Jane, daughter of Fairy Godmother; Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil; Jay, son of Jafar; Audrey, daughter of Sleeping Beauty; and Freddie, daughter of Dr. Facilier, joining forces with the kingdom of Wu, led by the Sun family, for its naval strength is known far and wide and it is of talented and fearless warriors.
Jane and Audrey are paired with the Two Qiaos (Jane is paired with Daqiao, wife of Sun Ce, and Audrey is paired with Xiaoqiao, wife of Zhou Yu)
Carlos is paired with Sun Ce and later Ling Tong
Jay is paired with Zhou Yu (i.e., a strategist soul) and later Gan Ning
Freddie is paired with Lu Su, and later Lu Xun (i.e., She's the only one to be paired with strategist souls).
Mal & Evie 魏 (Wei) Arc follows the story from the perspectives of Mal, daughter of Maleficent; Evie, daughter of Evil Queen; Ben, son of Beauty and the Beast; Doug, son of Dopey; Chad, son of Cinderella; and Dizzy, daughter of Drizella Tremaine, joining forces with the Hero of Chaos, Cao Cao and the kingdom of Wei, led by the Cao family, for its magnetism and principles. Elite warriors and cunning strategies are forces to be reckoned with.
Mal is paired with Xun You (i.e., a strategist soul)
Ben is paired with Guo Jia (i.e., a strategist soul)
Evie is paired with Cai Wenji (Evie is paired with an altruistic soul)
Chad is paired with Jia Xu (i.e., a strategist soul)
Doug is paired with Li Dian (i.e., a veteran general soul)
Dizzy is paired with Xu Shu (Dizzy is paired with a pure-hearted fighter)
Ally 晋 (Jin) Arc follows the story from the perspective of Ally, daughter of Alice, joining forces with the Jin kingdom, led by the Sima Clan, for it was the only kingdom that puts an end to the Three Kingdoms era.
Ally is paired with Sima Yi (i.e., a strategist soul) and later Wang Yuanji
Black Magick Chapter 3
Just realized I forgot to put these chapters on here. Sorry about that.
Warnings; mentions of CSA and CSE, mentions of childhood pregnancy, mention of self-harm, gender roles and transphobia, magical racism (racism against fae and demons,) ableism, there's an implied issue with Hades and Maleficent
As predicted, Claudine was out of the hospital quickly, staying only a week before it was decided she had recovered enough to be released to Sultuna Jasmine’s embassy, where she quickly made friends with Aziz and Jordan. The biggest concern doctors had had with releasing her was her hesitance to eat as much as she needed to, but Jasmine reported that there was no problem there. Claudine, surprisingly, enjoyed the typical rich flavors and spices in Agrabah cuisine. They never once had to try to convince her to eat everything given to her. In fact, with encouragement from Jordan, she even became comfortable with asking for second helpings. And if Claudine’s nightmares were ever frustrating to Sultana Jasmine, she kept it hidden and never said anything about it.
Shortly after Claudine left, Carlos was cleared to move in with Tiana, who stepped up to house him the second Anita and Roger learned how scared Carlos was of dogs. Her restaurant and loft turned out to be the perfect place for Carlos, who could never stand doing nothing. She introduced him to a real kitchen with real ingredients, handed him her grandmother’s well-read recipe book, and set him loose. He was a fast learner and soon found a love of cooking, and Tiana’s reviews of him were glowing.
Jay was released two weeks after Carlos, once the burns around his bands started to scar over and he got a bit of control over his magic. He was transferred to Jordan, who wished basic control for him before transferring him to her father, who started teaching him the more complex stuff. Jay had difficulty at first but picked it up after a while, his trademark determination pushing him through the hardest parts. Jabari, the genie, was nothing short of impressed. There was even talk of him making plans to formally adopt Jay, and Ben desperately hoped the rumors weren’t reaching his father.
Without Jay’s magic stopping it, Mal and Evie got their horns. They weren’t fully grown, not yet, but they were still incredible. Mal’s were black and reflected like polished wood, and there was a blue highlight where the light hit them. She got wings, too, though hers were very different from what Maleficent’s had been. Instead of feathers, they were a black leather that faded to deep blue and mysterious purple at the bottom edges, barbs matching her horns growing at the topmost joint. She took to her wings like mermaids took to water, like she had been born with them. To the doctors’ eternal distress, she was flying before she was even cleared to walk down the hallway.
Evie didn’t adapt as well. With all known demons living on the Isle, no one knew how to help her. The closest they could get was fae, meaning one of the three good fairies (the blue one, Ben could never remember their names) was teaching her about repressing her magic rather than controlling it. After a few incidents caused by Evie not knowing how to control a very powerful aspect of her, Jane stepped up and took time away from her classes to give Evie daily lessons. As far as Fairy Godmother and Ben’s father were concerned, Jane was teaching her how to repress it. Even if her blue hair grew out far faster than it was supposed to, no one was going to question Fairy Godmother’s daughter.
Riah stayed the longest.
It was pretty quickly decided that they couldn’t really do anything about Riah. The curse, which Fairy Godmother identified as being fae in origin, couldn’t be safely removed without the item used to cast it. Fairy Godmother gave him a temporary amulet while she recharged his, and his curse gave enough for them to take the breathing tube out. It wasn’t a good solution, but it was the only one they had.
It was also decided that, for now, they couldn’t do much about his leg, either. His femur had been broken at some point and hadn’t healed properly, resulting in the bone mending at a curve with one of the worst malunited fractures the x-ray tech had ever seen. It was clear the damaged leg hadn’t been properly used in years. The bones, even the ones that had no damage, were so weak that breaking them would be as easy as breaking a pencil. There was almost no muscle, just barely enough to move the joints, but the tendons were so stiff and tight that it was probably a miracle he could move his leg at all. Trying to fix the bone, even if they could risk putting him through the surgery with the laundry list of other issues he had, would require him to be in the hospital for months. Trying to get the leg to function again would take years of intense physical therapy, and even then no one was sure he would ever be able to get it to function normally even if everything went perfectly. It was decided that no action would be taken until his health was better and his body wasn’t so weak. For the time being, he was put on a nutrient-heavy diet and given several vitamin supplements. It was like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole the size of a cannonball, but it was all they could do.
After a month, all six were out of the hospital. Ben wanted nothing more than to give them at least another month to adjust to their new settings, but the council was growing anxious and he knew that if he pushed them too far, they would start wanting to send the Isle kids back. So, only a week after Riah was released from the hospital, they had to go to Auradon Prep.
-
The self-harm scars on Jay’s sides. The memory of Evie’s ribs and hips standing out from under her skin. The blood and bruises that could always be found on Carlos no matter what. The way Claudine limped on occasion. The sight of children not even as old as five living on Uma’s ship to be under her protection. Ginny Gothel cradling a girl no older than six after one of Harriet’s silent raids on a brothel. The way Hadie’s hand would still twitch when he was nervous, as if to grab the hand of the twin who’d been killed before the two could even speak. Little Anna with her belly bloated for the fourth time since she had turned thirteen. The way Riah had gasped as his lips had turned blue. The bruises and blood seen on almost every student in Dragon Hall, the dull look so many had in their eyes before they were even old enough to talk, the sight of black bags wrapped around bodies that were far too small. As the car drove up to the castle with hundreds of other kids on the lawn, Mal kept all of these images in mind.
The children she saw out of the tinted windows were clean. They had clean clothes and clean faces, happy expressions and bright eyes and no signs of the starvation everyone she had ever known had. Looking at them, she would bet that none of them had ever needed to worry about having food that wouldn’t kill them or water that wouldn’t poison them or clothes that wouldn’t protect them in winter. They hadn’t needed to pledge their loyalty to a gang at the age of three for protection. They certainly hadn’t been sold by their parents to brothels at tender ages. These kids were happy, they were healthy, they were safe.
Mal stared at them, and she seethed.
“What’s the plan?” Jay asked, expression carefully nonchalant. His street face.
Looking around the car, she saw that even Riah and Claudine, who weren’t technically a part of her gang, were hanging onto her words. She considered what she knew about them. “We play our roles. Jay, muscle. Carlos, coward. Evie, play dumb. Claudine, make yourself look as weak as possible. Riah, stay with Claudine and make it obvious you’re protecting her. Okay?” Everyone nodded. “Let’s do this.”
Jay gathered everything he could reach into his arms and Carlos grabbed a blanket. Claudine curled in on herself, looking at the floor, Riah moved so that he was sitting between her and the door, and Evie slid into her practiced, ditsy mask. It hadn’t occurred to Mal until she saw the Auradon kids that their scars would bring unwanted attention and she almost hated to hide what they considered badges of honor, but she had to. A quick spell flew from her lips, and their skin became as flawless as those outside. For just a second, everyone’s masks slipped, and she could see that they didn’t like it any more than she did.
There wasn’t time to change her mind. The door opened, and it was showtime.
Ben wasn’t sure what his poorly-informed expectations were, but the newest students tumbling out of the limo in a tug-of-war over a blanket certainly wasn’t it.
The band stopped playing as Carlos shrieked, holding onto the thin blanket like it was his lifeline while Jay, arms full of what seemed like everything he could grab, tried to yank it away from him. “You already got everything else, why do you want whatever this is?!”
“Because you want it!”
“No!” The other four stepped out of the limo like nothing was wrong, Mal and Evie stepping easily around them like it was normal. For a few long, agonizing moments, the only sound was Jay and Carlos fighting. And the cackles Aziz put absolutely no effort into hiding.
Thanks for the support, Aziz.
If he hoped to find support when he looked back at his friends, he would have been disappointed. Li Liang (he would never call her Lonnie no matter how much everyone else did, not when she despised the nickname so much) had her knuckles pressed to her lips in a clear attempt to keep from laughing. Doug was very pointedly looking everywhere that wasn’t at the fighting boys. Jordan, who used her Auradon name over her given one, Qadira, didn’t look like she thought anything was wrong. Winter Nolan was grinning and he chose to ignore that reaction because he couldn’t figure out what on Earth it meant, and Jane? Jane wasn’t even paying attention.
Nothing but support from the friends he’d chosen to be their guides.
For a few agonizing moments, no one knew quite what to do. Fairy Godmother, the person Ben wanted the least to comment on the situation, eventually stepped forward and cleared her throat. Mal seemed to realize something and broke up the fight with a bored, “Guys, we have an audience.”
Jay and Carlos paused, seeming to finally notice the undisguised horror everyone was staring at them with, and Jay chuckled. “Just cleaning up.”
“Leave it like you found it,” Fairy Godmother trilled, almost singing before getting serious. “And by that I mean just leave it.”
Mal shrugged at Jay and he pulled Carlos to his feet, tossing everything in his arms back into the limo and doing the same with the blanket Carlos still seemed willing to fight for. Fairy Godmother opened her mouth to speak again, but Jay’s dark eyes found Audrey and rolled appreciatively up and down her body. “Hel-lo foxy.” He heard a snort behind him from Li Liang finally losing her composure, though he couldn’t figure out why she found it so funny. “The name’s… Jay.”
Audrey rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to deliver an undoubtedly scathing reply, but Fairy Godmother got between them. “Welcome to Auradon Prep.”
The eye-roll Mal gave that comment was something that would have Ben admiring her courage for the rest of his days. Mal grabbed Jay’s arm and pulled him back, subtly shaking her head.
“I’m Fairy Godmother, the headmistress here.” They all knew her, but Ben could see both why she said it and the reactions it got her. Every single VK face was a perfect example of someone who knew they had messed up.
“Yeah, Fairy Godmother. You know, I always wondered what it was like for Cinderella when you just… appeared, out of nowhere, with that sparkly wand and warm smile.” Mal’s words got a genuine, affectionate smile from Fairy Godmother. “And that sparkly wand.”
“That was a long time ago. And as I always say, don’t focus on the past or you’ll miss the future.” She enunciated the last point with a quick gesture and, if the way Riah’s head rolled back was any indication, none of them were impressed.
He’d had rigorous court training for his entire life, but he had no idea how to make this situation any less awkward. He stepped forward, reaching a hand out to the one closest to him, Mal, for a handshake. “It is so, so good to finally see you all out of the hospital and back in good health.”
His dad had always told him that a handshake could tell you a lot about someone, and it was true. Mal’s was irritated with a  sigh and a roll of her eyes. Evie’s was too perfect, like someone who had been raised in court as he had. Carlos shook hands with only his fingers. Jay decided to forgo it and punch Ben jokingly instead (at least he was pretty sure the winding blow was meant to be a joke.) Claudine cringed behind Riah when he moved too suddenly, and Riah glared at Ben as if the offered hand was a venomous snake. Each one said a lot about the six, but Ben wasn’t quite sure exactly what. “This is a momentous occasion, one that will go down in history as the day our two peoples begin to heal.”
“Or the day you show six peoples where the bathrooms are,” Mal drawled, shifting.
Oh no, had he overdone it? “A bit over the top?”
“A little bit more than a little bit.” Her green eyes flicked to something over his shoulder and widened ever so slightly. She glanced at Riah, and Riah nodded towards the school like he was trying to tell her something. “So, do we ever get to see the school, or are we gonna stand outside all day so everyone can stare at us?”
Ah, right. “Each of you will be provided with a student guide, someone to show you around the school and answer any questions you may have. Evie, your guide is Winter Nolan, daughter of Snow White.” He said that only because Winter wasn’t obvious. She didn’t favor either of her parents, having wavy white hair and gray eyes so light they almost matched. Winter gave Evie a little wave, shifting her weight to her left leg. “Mal, yours will be Li Liang. Jay, you’ll continue to work with Jordan. Claudine, you’ll be with Aziz. Riah, you’ll work with Jane, and Carlos will be with Doug.”
“We’ll show you to your rooms and you’ll have a tour at twelve,” Li Liang said. Ben shot her a confused look. That wasn’t the plan, tours were supposed to be right after they were shown to their rooms. Li Liang gave him a look that meant there was no fighting her on it. “You’ll find your schedules and a copy of the student handbook on your beds.”
Mal, Jay, and Riah shared a look like they had bitten into a lemon.
“The doors of wisdom are never shut!” Fairy Godmother smiled, then got serious. “But library hours are from seven to nine and we do have a bit of a thing about curfew.”
Li Liang gestured for them to follow her. “Follow me.”
With the entire student body of Auradon Prep watching them, the six Isle Kids trailed after her.
-
Li Liang could read people like books. It was something her mom had taught her for as long as she could remember. For her, everything revealed something about someone. Body language, facial expressions, actions, words, eyes, how they moved, all of it was like words to her, and each word had a definition. These words came together like a story, and she could read them better than she could read English. The Isle Kids were no exception, just different. Encyclopedias that revealed why her mother fought against sending Li Liang and Li Susu to Auradon.
The first thing she saw was the dynamic between them. The six were like an army, everyone fulfilling a specific role. Mal was the leader and Li Liang could tell she was a good one. Her father would call her a soft leader, but Li Liang could see the methods she used and how these tactics strengthened her team. Mal saw her soldiers as her equals, didn’t think herself above them in any way other than rank. The way she moved around them, interacted with them, showed her that they were close. She would have to see more of how they interacted to know specifics, but she could tell that Mal’s methods had a lot of benefits. She also noticed that Riah and Claudine were on the fringe of the group, like they weren’t quite a part of it, more like allies. They followed where Mal went, but they looked out for each other before they looked out for the others.
Mal was a tactician, the one who made the plans, and she saw everything. Li Liang could see that she noticed everything that went on around her, even if she didn’t show it. The way she moved was confident, chin high and shoulders back, but it was still graceful and stealthy. Li Liang didn’t hear her footsteps once. Her tone was bored and she always spoke in an uninterested drawl, but that was an act. She was always gathering information. As Li Liang analyzed Mal and her team, Mal analyzed Li Liang and the other student guides. Like Jane, she listened without letting the world know she was doing it.
Jay was the fighter of the group. Like Mal, he watched the world around him, but he didn’t hide that he was doing it. He kept track of everything around him, especially everything around his friends. He stood in the back of the group but stayed close, likely so that he would be able to pull them out of danger or even get between the others and a threat. When they entered a room or turned down a hall, Jay scanned it like he was taking inventory. But physically, a lot of what he did was an act. He made himself look threatening and made himself look like a troublemaker, but that was a deception tactic. He wasn’t going to go looking for a fight, and most of what he did would be defense. If no one hurt the others, Jay wouldn’t be a problem. With him behind them, Li Liang noticed that none of the others seemed too concerned about what was going on behind them. They trusted him to protect them, and he made sure that their trust was not misplaced. He wasn’t trained, not as far as Li Liang could see, but he was strong, fast, and completely comfortable in his body. She wouldn’t look forward to fighting him, even if she would win.
Evie was also an actress. She was trying to put on an act, look ditsy and oblivious, but if she really looked, Li Liang could see that she was lying. Evie was incredibly intelligent and constantly on guard, even if it was hard to see. From the way she moved, Li Liang could see she knew how to fight and she would be a lethal opponent. She was made to blend in and get underestimated, and underestimating her was a mistake. Evie was cunning, and cunning could be more dangerous than a weapon.
Claudine was cut from similar cloth, made to seem as non-threatening and unimportant as possible. She made herself small, shrank into the background. Unlike the others there was no secret hint that she was a fighter, but she was strong. If someone decided to hurt her, she looked more suited to just take it and move on. Preserve herself, not her dignity. Like a rock in a storm.
Carlos was made to vanish. Even when Li Liang tried to pay attention to him, she couldn’t. He was behind people, just out of sight, and the others reinforced his hidden role. If they noticed someone trying to analyze him, they would grab their attention. Even Li Liang couldn’t keep an eye on him.
Riah, however, was made to be noticed. Loud steps, intimidating posture, blunt words, hard actions. Like Jay, he was a fighter and a sentinel and he made sure everyone knew it. Even though he was obviously weak, he was just as intimidating as Jay. It wasn’t obvious how, but he was a lethal opponent and a dangerous enemy and the unknown made him scarier. In a fair hand-to-hand fight, Li Liang was certain she would win without effort. The thing was that she knew he wouldn’t bring only his fists to a fight. She wanted to say it was all a posture like the others, but she wasn’t entirely sure it was. If he was wearing a mask, the seams escaped even her eyes.
Of the six, Evie was the only one who didn’t act like she wasn’t listening to Doug’s chattering as they went inside. None of them said anything all the way through the courtyard and entrance hall. The first words any of them said during Doug’s ramble came in the commons, and they came from Mal. “Where’s the elevator?”
Mal was looking at Riah, who was looking at the stairs like he had never slept in his life and they were the cause. Li Liang hadn’t thought of that. Did the school have an elevator? She actually didn’t know. She turned to Jane. “Where’s the nearest elevator?”
“You can’t get to any of them without going up the stairs.”
Well then what was the point of having them? “That has to be violating some sort of rule.”
“It is, but no one is enforcing it because the only student in a wheelchair lives in one of the other buildings.”
“And we couldn’t have put these guys in the building with an elevator?” Aziz gave Ben an incredulous look. “You’re kidding.”
“It’s because this is the only building that has both guy and girl dorms,” Ben explained, looking guilty.
“What good does that do if-”
“Oh my gods stop arguing,” Riah snapped, rubbing his temple with his unoccupied hand. “I’ve lived with stairs for five years and I can live with them now.”
“I’ll talk to my dad about it,” Jordan promised. She gave Jane a sympathetic look. “Sorry, Jane.”
“What’s she going to do, get angry about accessibility for a disabled student?” Jane rarely let her true feelings show, but when she did, it was always because of her adopted mother. “It’s her fault there’s an issue at all.”
“Can you get up the stairs?” Mal asked. Riah looked like he either wanted to kill someone or sink into the floor.
“I’m not helpless.” To prove his point he strode past the guides and, switching his cane to his right hand so he could hold the railing with his left, started up the stairs. Lin Liang and Jay both moved to the bottom to catch him if he fell, but he made his way to the top almost as fast as Li Liang could at a run. “See, not a problem. Where are our rooms?”
“They’re actually that way.” Doug pointed to the opposite staircase.
“I hate you all,” Riah sighed, no venom in his voice.
-
Her crew was split between three different rooms, and Mal was livid.
Maybe it would have been tolerable if the rooms were at least close, but they weren’t. Carlos and Jay were on a completely different floor, Riah and Claudine were on the same floor but near the entrance to the hall, and Mal and Evie were near the very end. And the rooms? She didn’t get to see what Jay and Carlos got, but hers was all pink and frills and lace and bright light bullshit. As she pinned blankets over the windows, she wondered if Riah and Claudine were stuck in a similar hell (and why did they put Riah in the girl’s wing? They couldn’t even stick to their guns on the stupid gender rules.)
Her question was answered when the doors of the white-painted closet flew open and Riah stormed out, Claudine following behind him with an unreadable look on her face. “Pink. Pink everywhere. Not even neon pink. It’s some stupid pastel.” He took a look at their room and looked like he’d been slapped. “This is absolutely ridiculous.”
“Why were you in the closet?” Mal raised an eyebrow.
“Portal. I memorized a spellbook while on the Isle and learned how. I was gonna put one connecting you two to Jay and Carlos so you could get to each other quickly.”
Mal nodded. “Good idea. Keep the one you just made, too. Connect the three.”
“Got it. You want me to change up…” He gestured around the room with a disgusted look, “This? Change the colors and stuff?”
“Please do.”
Riah commandeered the other half of the closet to open a portal to Jay and Carlos, quickly explained what he did, and went to work at the sheets and carpet. Soon, Mal’s bed was purple and black without any frills. Evie’s was turned to various shades of blue and the frills were turned black. He went around the room, turning the white-painted furniture black and doing the same with the plush carpet. When he was done, it looked much more like what they were used to. Infinitely better than any room on the Isle, but it looked like they lived there.
“Okay,” Mal sat on the bed next to Evie, watching Riah maneuver his bad leg to lounge on one of the windowsill benches. Claudine and Jay took the other bed, and Carlos took the floor by his own choice. “What did you guys see?”
“Li Liang is a fighter,” Jay started. “She’s trained and trained well, a lot cleaner than most people on the Isle.”
“And she was watching us the entire time. Like she was trying to figure us out.” Carlos nodded, fiddling with some small box Jay had stolen.
Riah raised a hand. “She has the most sway in the group. Ben might be king but her word is more law than his. Did you see his reaction when she said we would be left alone for a few hours? That wasn’t something they had agreed on, but he didn’t stop her.”
“Physically, she’s the biggest threat.” Coming from Jay, that was saying something.
“Can you take her?” Mal didn’t want to believe anyone could be a match for Jay, but believing there was no one who could beat him was foolish. Mal wasn’t foolish.
Jay made a so-so hand motion. “I could, but it wouldn’t be easy.”
“Magically, Jane is the biggest threat. Jordan is powerful, but she’s bound and can’t use her magic to help herself. Jane doesn’t have that weakness, and she’s powerful.” Vaguely, Mal wondered how Riah knew so much about magic. “The problem is that there’s no basis to compare Jane to. She shouldn’t be alive.”
“Why?”
“Magically, she’s extremely premature. She didn’t form properly. If I had to guess I would say she was separated from her mother at a young age. An extremely young age.”
“But she lives with her mother.”
Riah shook his head. “Fairy Godmother is not her mother. They don’t have the same magic makeup. Actually, Jane is a completely different race of fae.”
“Do you think she’ll be a problem?”
“We need to learn more about her before I can make that call. If push comes to shove I think I can take her in a fight, but I wouldn’t be looking forward to it.”
For the next fifteen minutes, the six of them dissected the gang they would be spending time with. The biggest threats were Jane and Li Liang, the smallest was Doug. None of them could figure out Ben, if he was a very good actor or just an idiot. Aziz and Jordan were possible allies. Winter Nolan was worthy of neither concern nor alliance.
“Two allies isn’t enough,” Mal wasn’t happy about the small number. “Especially not when we can’t be sure they’re on our side.”
“We’ll need to find more before we put our plan into action,” Riah spoke mostly to Claudine, but he didn’t try to hide his words.
There was a plan? Mal could respect having one, but seeing as Riah and Claudine weren’t there for Maleficent’s threat and didn’t know about the demand to steal the wand, she assumed they were planning for something else. Mal didn’t like it when people did things like that. “What plan?”
“We’re going to get the kids off the Isle,” Claudine looked Mal right in the eye as if daring her to protest. “And some of the adults. We cleared it with Uma, Diego, and Harriet, we just need to find out how we’re going to free them.”
So it wasn’t a plan, more the groundwork for one. They had the setup and the intended results but no idea how to execute it. Mal shared a look with the other three and got nods. They all agreed with the intended result. “We’re in. How are you thinking we should do this?”
“We’ve got a few ideas. All three need magic you guys can’t do.” Claudine held up three fingers. “The first is to bring the barrier down for as long as it would take for Uma to get the ships out. The second is to break Hecate’s binds and leave the rest to her. The third is to get Hades into the Underworld and let him take it from there.”
“What would Hecate be able to do?” Before they decided on a course of action, she needed to know what each one was banking on.
“Hecate is the goddess of using magic, she has complete control over it on a level not even Zeus would be able to counter. Even on the Isle, she would be able to manipulate magic. At least she would without her binds.” Riah traced around his wrists as if to illustrate the binds. “If we could manage to remove or break the binds, Hecate would be able to manipulate the magic of the barrier to her will. She would also be able to keep certain people from taking advantage of the barrier coming down.”
“None of us would be able to break those binds, not even all of us together,” Evie shook her head. “Even at the height of our power.”
“That’s true. It would probably take Hades, which would mean getting magic for him.” That one didn’t look like it would work. Mal shook her head and moved on. “What about the Hades plan, what’s that banking on?”
“The River Styx runs through the Isle and unintentionally connects it to the Underworld. The barrier keeps someone from using the small portion to get to the Underworld, but it’s not stronger than the command Hades has over his domain. If he could get to the underworld and thus his power, he could bring down the restrictions on part of his domain. The River Styx would flow freely, and people would be able to use it to escape to the Underworld, where they would be able to get to the land of the living… and because the sooner Thanatos can get back to what he’s supposed to do, the better.”
“Gotta agree with you on that one.”
Jay, Mal, and Evie shot to their feet. Carlos moved in front of Claudine. Claudine moved in front of Riah. Riah had a curse on his lips. Knives appeared in every hand, each pointed at the newcomer.
The man who’d appeared in the corner of the room didn’t seem that concerned. He was tall, long limbs filled with enough muscle to mark him a fighter and enough scars to mark him the winner, with shaggy black hair, black eyes, and skin that managed to be both bone white and olive-toned at the same time. He wore all black, and he had a long, pitch-black sword strapped to his hip.
“Lord di Angelo,” Riah realized, recognizing him. He bowed his head respectfully.
Nico di Angelo smiled. “There’s no need for titles, kid, you’re part of the family. Gods, you grew up.”
“You know this guy?” Mal asked, raising an eyebrow but not taking her eyes off of the guy who broke into their room.
Riah nodded. “Nico di Angelo, demigod son of Hades, prince of the Underworld and ruling lord of the neutral domains.”
“Which brings me to why I’m here.” Nico twisted the silver skull ring around his finger. “The Underworld needs Hades. I mean, we need all of them, but we need Hades most of all. We’ve got six people trying to do the job of a borderline titan and over a dozen gods in one of the hardest domains to manage, let alone rule. Even if we could only get Hades back, we would be able to pause what’s been set in motion.”
“What’s been set in motion?” On the Isle, people didn’t show true emotions, especially not fear. If someone looked nervous, they were terrified. And Riah? He looked absolutely petrified. Mal didn’t understand the implications of Nico’s words, but Riah did. If his reaction was anything to go off of, there was a problem.
“The walls between the Underworld and the living world are starting to weaken. Holes are appearing. But that’s not the biggest problem. The biggest one is that the walls within the Underworld are doing the same.” Nico paused. Riah was so pale he looked grey. “Tartarus is waking and without Hades to maintain his binds, we don’t know if we can stop him from rising. The deepest prisons are beginning to degrade, and we know at least one has gone into full breach. Only Hades could go down there to see and correct the damage… We could be looking at war on a scale larger than even the titans, and we won’t know until it’s too late to prevent it.”
“What does that mean?” Claudine whispered.
“It means a full invasion of everything the gods have locked away.” Riah ran his fingers through his hair, trying to calm himself. “It means monsters, pestilence, the immortal souls of the worst of the worst. It will mean titans that even the gods won’t speak of, and it will mean shedim. Basically, it means things that required the power of every god in existence to contain, and it will mean all of them attacking this world, this reality, at the same time.”
“It means we’re fucked on a cosmic scale,” Jay guessed. Riah nodded.
“Beyond cosmic.”
Seeing how pale they were, Nico backtracked. “The damage isn’t irreparable yet. If Hades can resume command of his realm, he will likely be able to fix this.”
“We need a way to contact Uma-” Riah bit his lips together and brightened. “Nico, I need you to talk to Demeter, tell her it’s about the freedom of her daughter and grandson. I’m going to write something down, she needs to give it to Hermes and he needs to follow these instructions exactly.” He got to his feet, neglecting to grab his cane as he hobbled over to one of the bookshelves. He grabbed two large books, something with the word ‘Encyclopedia’ written on the spine. A few whispered words and he opened both books to blank pages. “Mal, Jay, Evie, I’ll need to borrow some of your magic.”
“For what?” Mal raised an eyebrow.
Riah held up the books. “To link these so that what’s written in one appears in another. The spell is major and needs to be stronger to remain linked through the barrier. We can keep one here and give the other to Hermes, who can give it to Uma. It’ll be like having a phone between the Isle and here.” He ripped out one of the blank pages and started scribbling something. “When Hermes passes through the barrier, it breaks for just a second. I won’t be able to reinforce the spell to that level for long, a minute at best, but if we can keep in contact with him so that we can coordinate, the barrier won’t be able to break the spell and will just heal around it. It’s a lot of ifs and timing, but it’s our best chance.”
“But what’s to keep other people from reading our book and figuring us out?”
Hadn’t thought of that. Riah wilted. “That magic is beyond our level of control. Even with all of us together it wouldn’t work.”
Mal raised an eyebrow. “You can link two books together through the barrier but you can’t keep people from reading them?”
“It’s not that fucking simple, Mal,” Riah snapped. “Not only would the spell need to be powerful, powerful enough to stand against things I couldn’t match if I trained for a thousand years, it would need to be covert. Fairy Godmother has a magic detection spell over this school. I can counteract it by limiting how I use my magic but let me tell you, one-quarter of my magical ability will not be enough to create a sustained spell that level. I use the rest, the demon and the Hecate and that shit, and Fairy Godmother will be in here two seconds flat and the plan is out the window no matter how good I cast that extremely complex spell which, by the way, needs components we don’t have. Do you have the ichor of a maiden god, Mal? Do you?”
“Calm down,” Jay held up his hands.
Riah looked ready to keep ranting, but he took a deep breath and relaxed. “The best I can do is cast a misdirection spell around the book and try to make it so it doesn’t misdirect us, but that’s not foolproof.”
“We can’t work with what we don’t have,” Mal gave him an understanding nod. “Do your misdirection thing as best you can and we’ll try it your way. And we’ll have a backup plan in case it doesn’t work. Okay?”
“Okay.” Riah scrawled his instructions on the paper and handed it to Nico. “Tell us if she rejects so that we can find a different way.”
Nico took it with a nod, then hesitated. “How’s dad doing? And Seph and Hadie?”
“Dad’s started talking again,” Riah glanced at Mal. “Mom’s been really quiet, too. I think Hadie might be starting to get… but he doesn’t know. They haven’t told him. So he’s blaming himself, like he’s doing something wrong.”
“I thought she had what she wanted?” Nico glared, though not at Riah.
“I think at this point she more likes having control over him. I’m hoping, now that-” he started to say something, but closed his mouth quickly. “Now that he’s not making sure, he’ll be able to move to the Isle of Exile. Not as good as getting him as far away from Her as possible, but hopefully if they aren’t on the Isle anymore, she’ll lose interest.”
“Has she done anything to Hadie?” Nico’s hand tightened on the hilt of his sword. It had been a threat the evil faerie had been holding over Hades’ head for a while, forcing Hadie to take his place. It was probably the only thing keeping Hades from putting the fear of the gods back into that part of the Isle.
“She hasn’t. But her men have been following him. Hades is close to homeschooling him.”
“They’ve been following him?!” Nico sputtered, horror and rage filling his voice in equal amounts. “He’s twelve!”
“I was younger. She doesn’t care. Proved that with what happened to Selah and Cora.” Riah pressed his lips together, hand subconsciously going to trace the deformation on his leg. “She’s angry enough that she might do it. Medusa broke in and free Ganymede.”
“Right, because it’s horrible she can’t torture him any-”
“What are you two talking about?” Mal snapped. It always annoyed her when people did stuff like that, talked in code about something she didn’t know right in front of her.
“That’s not ours to tell you,” Riah gave Mal a guarded look before looking back at Nico. “Tell Demeter they’re following Hadie. She needs to know how much is at stake.”
She may not have liked Hades much, but she was outraged about what Maleficent was doing to him. From the small, whispered conversations he could hear between Hades and Persephone, she was terrified of Hadie becoming another victim, either like Hades was or like how Cora and Selah were. She’d been trying everything to get Hadie and Riah off of the Isle, to where they would be safe. Hopefully, now that she had such a big chance, she would take it.
“I will.”
“And…” Riah sighed quietly, rage fading into a dim sadness. “Say hi to Cora and Selah for me. Make sure they know that Dad still loves them, yeah?”
Nico nodded, gently pulling Riah into a hug. “It’s been nice seeing you, little brother. I’ll visit as often as I can.”
“Thank you.”
After a few more words, exchanged in a language none of them recognized, Nico ruffled Riah’s hair and melted into the shadows. Riah watched where he had disappeared for a few seconds, then turned back to them. “Hopefully, that will work.”
“Until it does, we need to start planning,” Mal chose not to comment on what she had seen. On the Isle, he would have been shamed, probably beaten, for showing affection so openly. But Mal never allowed that in her crew and Riah was part of her crew now. “We need allies, supplies, and an escape plan.”
“And now just student allies,” Evie added. “We need at least one sovereign body willing to back us. What did we learn with our temporary housing?”
“That not everyone agrees with Auradon,” Jay said. “Jasmine didn’t even try to hide how much she hated Auradon. I don’t think she wants Aziz to go to school here.”
“She won’t send any of her kids here,” Claudine whispered. “If Adam hadn’t strong-armed her into sending Aziz, none of them would be here. I listened in on one of her get-togethers.”
“With who?”
“Fa Mulan and Li Shang, Tiana and Naveen, Aurora and Christopher, Ariel, Eric, and Melody, Merida, Moana, Elsa, Ella, Rapunzel and Eugene, Kida, Milo, Sweet, and Audrey, and Snow White.” Riah wrote the names down as she listed them.
Evie’s eyes were wide. “That’s most of the council. What was the meeting about?”
“Us.” All eyes went to Claudine. That didn’t sound good. “They were talking about the states we were in. Aurora was going on and on about Riah’s leg and his curse, Tiana got so angry for Carlos that she kept leaving the room to cook, Rapunzel was sniffling the entire time- I think she was sad about Ginny Gothel, she kept whispering about her and Mother Gothel over and over. Jasmine mentioned the scars on Jay’s back and everyone got so angry it took a few minutes for them to stop yelling. They were furious. For us.”
The glitter in her eye told them that Mal had an idea. “If they were that pissed just because of what they saw from us… Imagine how they would feel if someone told them the rest. Imagine how Jasmine would feel if she heard about Belle and Anna, or how Aladdin would feel if he learned what kids on the Isle had to do to survive. If we told them even half of it, we might not even need to convince them. Hell, they’d probably offer to shelter the people we get out of that hellhole.”
“Ginny Gothel and Mother Gothel keep books on everything that happens. Every kid who the Silver Cross has to treat, every dead kid, every kid in Kronk’s shelter, everything every kid on the Isle goes through.” Claudine knew that library. Ginny asked her to help write stuff down when she needed to escape her dad for a while. “If we could get even one of those books-”
“How about all of them?” Riah opened one of his spelled books and started scribbling something. “When Hermes comes to deliver the book, we’ll have a big box of stuff for him. We need to get medicine, canned food, clothes, books, anything we can, and we’ll put it all in my suitcase. He’ll bring it to Uma, Uma distributes the supplies, and Ginny fills it with as many of those books as she can. Hermes brings it back, and Sultana Jasmine gets an anonymous package full of an eyewitness account of the Isle.”
“And you can get Hermes to do that?”
“Hermes adores me and he hates the Isle.”
“Everyone go back to your rooms and get anything you don’t need to bring it back here,” Mal ordered. “While we’re on the tour, we’ll look for food and see if we can find med supplies. As much as possible.”
-
Fifteen minutes later, everything in their rooms that they didn’t need was laying on Mal’s bed. Auradon clothes (which Riah changed the colors of to make them more Isle,) books, the school supplies in their desks, some of the supplies Jay had stolen at the hospital (they needed the rest for themselves, just in case,) cleaning supplies, soaps and other stuff (Riah had grabbed the four large packages of pads and tampons from his bathroom, since he and Claudine didn’t have periods,) and even a few luxuries like candy and some short shirts Riah explained were real binders, not the bandages and other things they used on the Isle. Claudine donated one of her headscarves, a gift from Sultana Jasmine, that Jade could use as a hijab. It would have taken four months for them to get anything close to what they were freely given in Auradon, and it pissed Mal off. They had all of this luxury to burn, but babies on the Isle died because they were lucky if the barges carried one container of baby formula a year.
As they packed it into the suitcase Riah had snuck Claudine in, they made a list of things they would need to keep an eye out to include in future drops (they resolved to try and do this once a week.) A lot of this stuff would always be in high demand and they would need to send as much as possible, but they had to be careful where they got it from and how much they got. People would get suspicious if they took too much food or clothes.
Selflessness wasn’t something any of them often indulged in on the Isle, but they would here. Even if they had to go without.
