i was posting abt this on twt but the new merry marbling ch is sooooooo. I LOVE that mirye actually expressed his feelings outright to him bcus obviously kyungbin didnt fully get it w/o him saying it out loud. but i still think weve had the clues that he likes him fr and isnt just dating him? like hes said before that he wouldnt kiss someone he wasnt dating, but when kyungbin said "i bet i could do it better this time" mirye JUMPED on it. and when kyungbin said "dont laugh at me if im bad" it showed mirye thinking that he wouldnt laugh at him no matter what.

PLUS! i was looking back on their moments (bcus im crazy abt them teehee) and when kyungbin was LITERALLY ABT TO PUNCH HIM he was like "my life was in danger but all i could think about was how fast my heart was beating"

+ the whole reason mirye doesnt want kyungbin to hug other ppl is bcus he "cant stand around while he gets those feelings from other people" (jealous ass mf),

also when he said he'd maybe go to one of kyungbin's taekwondo events he was so close to saying "im not interested in taekwondo, just you"?? like his whole reasoning for wanting to go was bcus he wanted to see kyungbin lmao... and then he automatically said "im not going" bcus he was like oh shit wtf was i abt to say

i think the reason mirye doesnt fully show his feelings is bcus 1. hes obviously afraid of ppl finding out abt their relationship in the first place (yknow, cus of homophobia) but 2. hes explicitly stated before that hes "very conservative" when it comes to ideas of dating, so he probably is afraid to express how much he likes kyungbin (which is supported by how shy he was abt saying he likes him) CONTRARY to kyungbin, who is shows how much he loves him without shame and really wishes people could know theyre dating (bcus he likes him so much lol) nvm the fact that bro doesnt even comprehend the idea of ppl hating gay ppl? head empty just homosexuality with him tbh

oh nonnie this is gonna be a challenge but i will do my absolute best. one thing you need to know about me and my taste in romance is that i'm really not here for straight up fluff. i need a bit of melodrama and angst to keep me invested. gonna stick it under a read more bc i feel it's gonna get lengthy asdfghjk

couples:

ji ho and jeung in (one spring night) - they invented being in love and facing your problems with maturity and they're just so important to me.

kang doo and moon soo (just between lovers) - if there's one thing i love in my romance it's angst and hurt people learning to heal together and literally no one does it like them. kang doo remains my favourite junho role too, so.

kyeo rye and yeon joo (if you wish upon me) - similar to jbl tbh kyeo rye is such a broken man at the start of the drama and watching him slowly fall in love and heal from years and years of trauma destroyed all of my emotions.

gong myung and se ra (into the ring) - THE childhood friends to rivals to friends to lovers ship!!!!! no one does it like they do honestly they're THE standard when it comes to emotional maturity.

joong gil and ryeon (tomorrow) - listen if you were around last year then you know just insane they made me. soulmates defying literal fate to end up together after centuries of trauma they make me so sick.

cheoljong and so bong (queen cheorin) - THE standard for enemies to lovers. nothing has ever been able to replicate the buzz they gave me week to week.

seon gyeom and mi joo (run on) - the softest couple on this entire list actually i think. they're just so sweet and cozy and safe and i love them so much.

taejun and taeyang (love all play) - my babies!!!! the drama itself kinda sucks but theyyyyy. one of the most mature relationships i've ever seen in a drama actually like we love a couple that actively talk about their issues and try to overcome them together.

vincenzo and cha young (vincenzo) - enemies to coconspirators to lovers excellence honestly who is doing chemistry like them. they're just so sexy.

dong jin and woo joo (call it love) - hi hello it's another instance of two traumatised people falling in love and finding happiness together what can i say i have a TYPE.

dramas:

one spring night - i've already talked about why i love this drama so much so i won't do it again but just know. i love it so so much it's so important to ME.

just between lovers - another one i've talked about a lot at this point but outside of the romance, this drama is just so GOOD. it deals with a lot of heavy themes so i'd advise discretion but it's so worth it imo. but just 10/10 experience wish i could go back and watch it again for the first time.

if you wish upon me - i love it for a lot of the same reasons i love jbl they're very similar imo. also. kyeo rye is the most character of all time i genuinely don't think ji chang wook is ever topping him.

into the ring - underrated!!!! underrated!!!!!!!!! underrated!!!!!!!!!!!! y'all slept on this one so hard and i still haven't forgiven you. i love romance between two grown adults who actually act their age and don't fall victim to stupid tropes.

run on - this drama makes me feel so cozy and safe and fuzzy idk man it's just pure good vibes for my soul.

call it love - if you love dramas that are slow, where a lot is said with very little dialogue and where the colour grading tells you a lot about the characters emotional states then boy do i have the drama for you.

witch's romance - can i interest you in twinky park seo joon in love with uhm jung hwa??? bc that's what this drama has to offer and it's so fun. it might be a bit dated now bc it came out in 2014 but i had such a good time when i first watched it.

queen cheorin - aside from the last half of the last episode i had such a good fun time watching two absolute idiots fight tooth and nail against falling in love with each other. when are we ever getting that level of chemistry again???

moon embracing the sun - alright i'm gonna be honest i don't actually remember all that much of this one anymore. i only watched it because kim soo hyun's in it. but i watched it as it was airing and it emotionally destroyed me so that's gotta count for something.

first love hatsukoi - yeah yeah it's not korean it's japanese but it's also the best show i've watched in the last year so!!!!! y'all can just take my rec and live with it. please please PLEASE watch it it's one of the most beautiful dramas i've ever seen and all four of the main actors are absolutely incredible in it.

Doctor Cha (2023)

I got a fever, and the only prescription is more melodramas!

I usually hate love triangles, but it wasn’t so bad with this show. I think it helped that the entire premise was so unbelievable that I was able to just sit back and embrace the chaos. 

What Worked 

The show did a great job at letting you know what you were in for right from the first episode—an over the top, unrealistic situation with fun characters. The entire plot was building towards this dramatic train wreck where the protagonist (who was almost too good to be true) hit the final straw, and gave the terrible husband and mother-in-law exactly what they deserved. And that whole part of the story was completely engrossing. 

What Didn’t Work 

The writers didn’t bungle the ending, I still liked it, but I think they played it a little safe. All of the messed up relationships that were causing the delicious drama wrapped up on mostly good terms. That’s a nice story in a way, but I don’t think it was as cathartic. 

Still, it’s a better story than real life, where men like the cheating husband often end up prospering, without really learning their lesson. 

The Performances

Uhm Jung-hwa as “Doctor Mom” Cha Jeong-suk. I first saw this actress in “Our Blues” and I really liked her in that. Though the writing in this show isn’t quite as good, her performance in this show was just as good and even better in some respects. Really fun to watch this actress at work. 

Kim Byung-chul as “Dirty Cheating Doctor” Seo In-ho. His character was supposed to be both pathetic and hate-able and the actor hit the brief very well. A lot of the charm in this show was watching him get his just desserts and suffer, while still being an unrepentant jerk. 

It’s not exactly hate watching when the show clearly wants you to hate him. The fact that I never got tired of watching him, shows just how good his acting was. 

Myung Se-bin as “Lady Cheating Doctor” Choi Seung-hee. This actor had a tough job to do. The writers kept shifting her motivation and relationships around and overall she did a good job making it work. I think her best scenes were with Eun-Seo, but she was still okay to watch overall. 

Min Woo-hyuk as “The Good Doctor” Roy Kim. I enjoyed his performance. It was fun watching him go in and ruffle everyone’s feathers by being a good guy who doesn’t take anyone’s nonsense. I think his arc mostly peaked early though and he was less interesting towards the end of the series. 

Song Ji-ho as “Doctor Son” Seo Jung-min. He had some great comic moments and I enjoyed watching his relationship with the girlfriend. It did take some time for him to really get interesting, though. 

Jo Ah-ram as “Doctor Girlfriend” Jeon So-ra. I loved this character. I really enjoyed her relationships with both Jeong-suk and Jung-min.

Baek Joo-hee as “Doctor Bestie” Baek Mi-hee. A good example of how a good actor can make even a side character interesting. I especially liked the episode where she helped Yi-rang after she got in a fight. 

Park Joon-geum as “The Worst Mother-in-Law” Kwak Ae-sim. I really disliked this character. Which means she did a good job because that was exactly what I was supposed to feel.

Kim Mi-kyung as “The Best Omma” Oh Deok-rye. She’s played a role like this so many times and yet I never get tired of seeing her because she still keeps it from being boring or repetitive. A national treasure. 

Lee Seo-yeon as “The Good Daughter” Seo Yi-rang. She did a good job with the role she was given and had some great moments, but there were times when she disappeared in a scene. Pretty good overall though. 

So A-rin as “The Best Daughter” Choi Eun-seo. They played it like she was some kind of emotionally unstable child in the first few episodes, which was unfortunate because the character was actually one of the most interesting and honest characters in the show. And she was mistreated by everyone. 

The show was at its best when they let this actor loose, and I was really impressed by her performance. 

Everyone Else. The show did have a few good moments for its minor characters, but most of the time they weren’t memorable or doing anything important. 

TL; DR: 

This is a show made for people who like melodramas. If you’re able to turn off the nitpicking part of your brain and enjoy the ride, it’s pretty dang fun.

Como uma ajuda ao financiamento de projetos do curso de Cinema, os estudantes aproveitaram o evento e se organizaram para vender pipoca, algodão-doce, tteokbokki, kimbap e bebidas variadas.

O Hospedeiro (Bong Joon Ho, 2007) 2h

Na beira do rio Han moram Hie-bong (Byeon Hie-bong) e sua família, donos de uma barraca de comida no parque. Seu filho mais velho, Kang-du (Song Kang-ho), tem 40 anos, mas é um tanto imaturo. A filha do meio é arqueira do time olímpico coreano e o filho mais novo está desempregado. Todos cuidam da menina Hyun-seo (Ko Ah-sung), filha de Kang-du, cuja mãe saiu de casa há muito tempo. Um dia surge um monstro no rio, causando terror nas margens e levando com ele a neta de Hie-bong. É quando, em busca da menina, os membros da família decidem enfrentar o monstro.

Premissen till överlevnadsdramat Tunnel är på ytan så enkel den kan bli. Familjefadern Lee Jung-soo (Ha Jung-woo) fastnar i en kollapsad biltunnel någonstans i Sydkorea, och den långdragna räddningsaktionen blir en nationell angelägenhet. Nog för att det är spännande att följa de drabbades kamp mot klockan, men störst behållning är den uppenbara samhällskritiken, om sensationslysten journalistik, statliga prioriteringar och krassa rationaliseringar som går ut över medborgarnas säkerhet. 

Vad är ett människoliv värt när ekonomisk profit och politisk prestige står i främsta rummet? Vad händer när tilltron (eller övertron) till samhällsapparaten raseras? Man kan låta det vara osagt hur väl filmen fungerar som KBT-behandling för personer med dystychifobi (rädslan för olyckor). Dock bör en varning utfärdas till nojiga bilister med klaustrofobi, det finns alarmerande risk att Tunnel skapar långtgående trauman.

1930-talets Japanockuperade Korea. Bedragaren Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo) smider lömska planer för att bestjäla adelsdamen Hideko (Kim Min-hee) på hennes förmögenhet. Som ett led i komplotten, låter han yrkestjuven Sook-he (Kim Tae-ri) skaffa anställning som Hidekos tjänarinna. Problemen börjar när lust och förälskelse kommer i vägen för lurendrejeriet, och förväntningar mellan könen ställs på hårda prov.

The Handmaiden, baserad på Sarah Waters gotiska roman The Fingersmith (2002), är en bländande uppvisning i manipulationskonst. Att den har kallats “elegant depraverad”, är ingen överdrift. Ett av de otäckare inslagen är Hidekos sadistiska, överförmyndande farbror; förutom att bedriva suspekt verksamhet i sin skyddslings källare, har han en uppsyn värdig en tortyrskräckis. Men med tanke på vad Old Boy-regissören Park Chan-wook är kapabel till, blir det inte så (fysiskt) våldsamt som man skulle kunna tro.

Tillsammans med manusförfattaren Chung Seo-Kyung, har Park snarast skapat en psykologisk gåta, som tar flera vändningar innan det uppdagas vem som egentligen svindlar vem. Mest gripande är temat om kvinnlig frigörelse, som i takt med att hämnardramat nystas upp, visar sig vara filmens bärande tråd.

En ej namngiven storstad i Sydkorea. En kontorsanställd man mördar sin familj och går sedan upp i rök. Hans försvinnande blir upptakten till en rad mystiska händelser, inte minst för kollegorna på arbetsplatsen gärningsmannen lämnar bakom sig. Det är premissen för Office, en psykologisk thriller som rotar i hur vanliga människor kan förvandlas till monster. 

Enligt filmskaparnas kyliga porträtt av sydkoreansk företagskultur, tillhör ett hierarkiskt och elitistiskt arbetsklimat vardagen. Ibland även mobbing. Som scenen där en polisman krasst konstaterar att det inom alla organisationer finns någon som är tacksam att bryta ned. En arbetsmyra men socialt kantig person, som har svårt att passa in. Likt Michael Douglas tickande bomb i Falling Down, ser sig kontorsslaven i Office forcerad att göra upp med samhället. Frustrationen går dock främst ut över nära och kära, något som för tankarna till Michael Hanekes gastkramande drama The Seventh Continent.

Kontoret som spegling av samhället i miniatyr, avkodas via Lee Mi-Rye (Ko A-Sung), praktikant och kollegiets hackkyckling. Särskilt olustigt är det när hon överhör hur hon blir baktalad och miljöljud som småprat och smatter från tangentbord förstärks allteftersom. Just realistiska ljudeffekter snarare än filmmusik, används för att gestalta trånga ytor i ett kontorslandskap av detta slag. Även kameraarbetet och scenografin gör sitt till för att förstärka klaustrofobin, ibland så Hitchcock-inspirerat att det gränsar till det väl uppenbara, med blinkningar åt både Psycho och En studie i brott.

Office är en lovande regidebut som förmedlar isande insikter om mänskliga drifter. Framför allt hur vi i jakten på framgång och välstånd behandlar varandra och vad det gör med oss, individuellt och kollektivt.

The Beauty Inside Regissör: Jong-Yeol Baek Skådespelare: Han Hyo-Joo, Park Seo-Jun, Juri Ueno, Lee Jin-Uk m.fl. Längd: 127 min År: 2015

Idén bakom The Beauty Inside är baserad på episodfilmer med samma namn, producerade för YouTube 2012. En man vaknar upp på sin 18-årsdag med förändrat utseende. Så fortsätter det. Varje dag ny kropp, ålder och kön – ett oförklarligt tillstånd som ställer relationer på sin spets, särskilt romantiska sådana. Denna sockersöta dramakomedi blir ofta på gränsen till för mycket melodram, men i slutändan vinner feelgood-charmen tack vare säkra skådespelare och brännande identitetsfunderingar.

En sjuksköterska får via sina patienter – en man i behov av hjärttransplantion och en gravid ung kvinna – anledning att ifrågasätta sitt eget förhållande till livet och döden. Su-won Shin har med Madonna skapat en studie i hur effektivt en människa kan brytas ned när omgivningen sviker, och hur destruktiva patriarkala strukturer återfinns i alla samhällskikt. En nattsvart betraktelse som berör på djupet, med tillräckligt många strimmor hopp för att man inte ska gå under fullständigt i biomörkret.

[Feature Series] Recapturing Korean Cinema by Establishing Auteurship of Female Directors - Intro

I remember the first week of freshman year when a guy living down the hallway poured out his love for “Korean Films” after knowing that I’m Korean and interested in majoring in film. He passionately confessed to me how “crazy” Korean films are, how amazing Kim Ki-duk and Park Chan-wook are, and how they are so under-appreciated in the US. I nodded with a half smile and said I enjoy Park’s films, not so much Kim’s, wondering if the names mentioned are enough to represent the entirety of “Korean” films. Five years later, genre films loaded with violence and abuse of women have become even bigger staples of Korean cinema. Growing number of the international audience associate Korean films with rough action, male-dominated cast, and stylized gore, which have gotten a pass for providing a “real, unfiltered” look into the world.  

A month ago, “60-minute”-esque Korean investigative show aired an episode on Kim Ki-duk whose wins in Berlin and Cannes have sustained his careers as a Korean auteur. The episode revealed that female actors that played victims in his film were, in fact, victims in real life. Three actors that came forward accused Kim of rape, sexual assault, and other predatory behaviors throughout the production. The very theme of his films - twisted male desire to subjugate a woman as a release of anger towards societal oppression - was, in fact, fueling his own crimes. Kim’s monsters were not products of his artistic imagination, but derivatives of a monster that he is. Kim is the ugliest example, but I believe he is a part of a larger ill plaguing Korean society - its addiction to the images of violent men and suffering woman. Directors are not using violence as an element of story, but as their masturbatory fantasy realized on screen.

While male auteurs are losing their legitimacy, scholars and moviegoers are looking for different narratives in contemporary Korean film industry. ‘Trans: Asia Screen Culture Institute,’ founded by faculty and students affiliated with the School of Film, TV, and Multimedia in the Korea National University of Arts, is starting a serious conversation about Korean female directors at this critical junction of time. The institute is hosting a three months long lecture series featuring a line-up of the most prominent female filmmakers of the time.

Kim So-young, a filmmaker, a critic, and the head of the institute, proclaimed in the introduction of series that auteur theory approach to Korean Cinema is dead since it has only centered on male directors. She highlighted the significance of this lecture series as an attempt to create an alternative discourse on female auteurs. When male directors create films, they automatically gain authority as some kind of a testimony to our reality. Their body of work is considered to have continuity, each film accepted and interpreted with a certain, fixed approach.(e.g. Hong Sang-soo) Kim argues that female directors were never granted such authority and power in association with their art.

What is abbreviated here is the reality in which many filmmakers don’t even get a chance at making more than one film to display a certain style or a thematic focus. In last five years, only 6.8% of the Korean films were made by female directors. That’s why this lecture series feels so special. So far only the line-up for April is up, but it’s already phenomenal, including Byun Young-joo (Helpless, The Murmuring Series), Lee Kyoung-mi (The Truth Beneath, Crush and Blush), Yim Soon-rye (Little Forest, Forever the Moment, Waikiki Brothers), and Shin Su-won (Glass Garden, Madonna, Pluto). These directors are pioneers and survivors whose works are already canonical to young women wanting to follow their footsteps. Rediscovering and establishing their voice and auteur-ship seems so vital and timely.

SINOPSIS Drama Itaewon Class : Di hari pertama sekolah menengah barunya, Park Sae Roy (Park Seo-Joon) meninju teman sekelasnya Jang Geun Won yang telah membully teman sekelas lain. Dia adalah anak putra CEO Jang Dae Hee (Yoo Jae-Myung) yang memiliki bisnis restoran Jagga.

Ayah Park Sae Roy bekerja di restoran itu, CEO Jang Dae Hee ingin Park Sae Roy meminta maaf kepada putranya, tapi Dia menolak. Akhirnya Dia dikeluarkan dari sekolah sekaligus Ayahnya dipecat dari pekerjaannya.

Sebuah kecelakaan sepeda motor terjadi yang mengakibatkan Ayah Park Sae Roy meninggal dunia dan penyebabnya adalah Jang Geum Won. Hal itu semakin membuat Park Sae Roy marah dan dengan amarahnya itu Dia memukul Jang Geun Won.

Akhirnya hal itu menyebabkan Dia ditangkap dan menerima hukuman penjara atas kasus penyerangan dan kekerasan. Park Sae Roy akhirnya bertead untuk menghancurkan perusahaan Jagga dan membalas dendam kepada CEO Jang Dae Hee sekaligus putranya Jang Geun Won.

Setelah Park Sae-Roy keluar dari penjara, dia membuka restoran di Itaewon, Seoul. Jo Yi-Seo (Kim Da Mi), seorang wanita yang populer di media sosial dan juga seorang blogger bergabung dengan restoran Park Sae-Roy. Dia juga memiliki perasaan untuk Park Sae Roy.
