to be completely honest i've been wanting to use this blog again for a while, but i didn't want to just reappear without saying anything about it so i kept putting it off. but i guess i gotta do it now because i couldn't hold back the urge to go Ape Shit (positive) about utdr

well last year I was unmedicated, full of mold, and incapable of articulating my general frustrations with fandom without getting genuinely upset and being a dick about it. this was not really healthy so I logged off and scheduled some appointments and became Medicated. i also grew strawberries from seed and started a compost pile and both went surprisingly well. there was steam coming out of that thing(!) plus I started playing neopets again. and some other stuff happened too

to sum up what I was so frustrated about in the first place... i don't think it's unique to any specific hobby or fandom or age group, but at times I see this pattern of incuriosity and it gives me this sorta bleak feeling, particularly when it comes to serious real-world topics. like people writing off concerns about racism as petty "drama" or using thought-terminating cliches like "it's just a silly little joke/cartoon/game" or "so I'm not allowed to have fun???" or whatever. or the assumption that someone avoiding saying/doing bigoted things in public to maintain their image is Undeniable Proof that they're reformed despite never directly acknowledging how their bigotry was wrong (jontron would be an example of this i guess). i can't stop anyone from liking what they like but i think vehemently defending people like that is wrong, and it just feels like an excuse to return to Uncritical Media Consumption Status Quo. or something like that

in any case, i don't want to use my feelings about things like that as an excuse to treat people unfairly or be needlessly cruel or bitter, so i thank you again for your patience with me if you've read this far. i'm not exactly sure what i'll do with this blog because i still feel kind of cautious about following a lot of fan blogs, but i at least want to Do My Own Thing here, and i hope in the future i can manage to make some fun stuff again like fanart, sculptures, dolls...

OH i almost forgot to mention the oekaki. i never actually shut it down but i definitely think it needs a lot of TLC before i promote it again

I think it's important to look at the Girlfriend Reviews incident of the Hogwarts Legacy response, because even if it's just a case of lack of awareness of some Youtubers, the way that they're being used is insidious.

So from what I've seen is that they tried to stream Hogwarts Legacy, a section of their fanbase expressed their disappointment mainly via messages they were unfollowing/unsubscribing, Shelby got upset and tearfully took a break, but they still streamed for 6 hours after. Since then the story has been used to label those opposed to Hogwarts Legacy as abusive towards Girlfriend Reviews and other streamers.

If there is any screenshots of the abusive language in their chat, please let me know, as further evidence is always appreciated.

I do think that Girlfriend Reviews were mostly naive, thinking that donating to the Trevor Project would be a reasonable counterbalance for their discretion, however that action is also telling that they knew that playing the game would result in some backlash. They're no strangers to backlash, as they did receive previous harrassment when they played The Last Of Us Part 2. They should be aware by now, how politics and video games interact.

I think when they got harrassed for TLOU2, there was more of a dismissive attitude of "people getting too upset over a game", rather than a culture of misogyny in video games and that culture lashing out due to a sense of entitlement. And perhaps Girlfriend Reviews thought that HL was more of the same, but it's not and to act like it is, is just being ignorant of systems of power.

But this isn't just about these youtubers. Shelby's tears are being manipulated by bad actors as White Women's Tears. If you're unaware of the term, WWTs is a common framing tactic that has been used, mostly for anti-black purposes, for a long time. It's used to justify continued oppression against marginalized groups by saying "Look how they've hurt the feelings of this symbol of innocence". White women have often been used as a tool within white supremacist, patriarchal societies, as something to be protected from the influence and existence of The Other. White Women's Tears are most notable in the case of Emmett Till.

I'm not saying that Shelby was aware of this when she cried, or that she faked crying. What I am saying is that the sort of folk who harrassed Girlfriend Reviews for playing TLOU2, are the sort of people who are now using the image of her crying to punch down on Trans people, Jewish people, and others who expressed their disappointment at Girlfriend Reviews for playing HL. I'd hope that Girlfriend Reviews would be able to see this, and make amends, rather than trying to retreat to an apolitical position, while allowing the continued use of this "harrassment" to inflict more harm on Trans and Jewish people. And that's the better of two evils, hopefully this doesn't make them follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jontron, becoming an alt-right talking head (although this seems unlikely).

The cognitive dissonance of trying to enjoy something you thought was just innocent fun, to find out it has wider political ramifications, is hard. It's painful, you don't want to feel bad for what you consider an accidental lapse of better judgement. However, the actions you take to deal with that cognitive dissonance is important. You can either face up to your mistake, bury your head in the sand, or stand by your action and in opposition of those you have wronged.

halo reach was the first game that made me feel emotions

Castlevania: The Adventure

Having come to the realisation that most games covered by pre-2010's YouTubers are nowhere near as bad as they are made out to be (see: Daikatana, Simon's Quest, Takeshi's Challenge, Sonic R, etc.) it continues to astound me how reviled Castlevania: The Adventure still is. By no means is the game objectively great or anything, but it's spoken about in the same hushed whispers as Bubsy 3D and Superman 64. This feels a disservice to the first portable Castlevania and an outright overblowing of its shortcomings. My own rating of the game at five stars might be an over correction of this scorn, but I genuinely adore this game.

I first played Castlevania: The Adventure as a gaff when it was included in the Castlevania Anniversary Collection. I bought it purely for the first NES game and Kid Dracula but dipped my toes in The Adventure's waters to at least see what the hubbub was about. Back in 2011, JonTron uploaded a 'Drunk Gaming' video on the game where he derided it just as he would Black people and medical realities in the years to come. His misrepresentation stuck with me as I worked through The Adventure and found his criticisms to be either unfounded or hyperbolic. And when Dracula was felled the only thoughts in my head were 'what's the problem here exactly?' and 'that kicked ass.'

What people get caught up on the most for The Adventure is its movement. Christopher Belmont moves laboriously at a pace identical to most of his enemies. His jump is a commitment, his swing so rigid as to betray the flexibility of a whip. In another game this would be a fair point of contention, but as Vee already highlighted in his excellent Castlevania review, "Belmont movement fucking rules." The name of the game here is intent rather than reaction. This is apparent from the first stage's floating bricks. The pixel perfect precision demanded for progress leaves no room for error even as an enemy swoops towards you. Should you fail, you tread back to the start of the section and try again. The enemy returns every time. This is not a cruelty on Konami's part, but a deliberate test of the player's skill and ability to stay calm under pressure. The stakes are low here, they will be debilitating later.

The Adventure does have areas of insidiousness, particularly in stage two's ropes. If the player chooses incorrectly at the first set, they meet a dead end and are forced to use a continue. I have little defence for this, but its position near the start of the level means little time is wasted; it feels like a little joke. The gauntlet in the third stage is downright dismaying in its scope yet remains one of my favourite parts of the game. Here too does The Adventure insist upon keeping your cool. There is room to make up for a few scant mistakes, but there is no time to dilly-dally. March forth with confidence, your leaden feet like the unceasing momentum of a steam roller. This need to persevere is seen as well with the few instances where the only feasible way forward is to use your limited invincibility powerup maximally. Reviews decry that these sections necessitate the pickups as poor design, but I see it as deliberate, conscious design. It operates similarly to segments in Mario titles where you pickup a Star and a plethora of enemies lie in your path. Certainly one could eschew this boon and risk harm, but the creators wanted the tool provided to be used.

The lack of subweapons might hurt the game if it weren't designed around their absence. The fireball shot from the whip effectively functions as a knife, however, so I don't believe we're missing out. The Adventure's reduction in the Belmont repertoire asks for a full understanding of the most basic elements of a Castlevania game: jumping, whipping, moving. Even the removal of stairs in favour of ropes is in service of jumping gameplay as seen in stage three. Having enemies generally perish in a single hit from the upgraded whip is in service of the intended unabated path. The hesitant player is hit, the hesitant player gets a weaker whip, the hesitant player has to abide by the game's stricture to get back to an optimal state. The bosses in The Adventure aren't amazing by any means, but they too crumble into dust if the player avoids letting things get too hairy. The Under Moles of stage two are a great example. They appear at a perfect pace where they can be dealt with individually without issue. Should the player dawdle or miss their mark, their problems have compounded and made the fight all the harder. This isn't a test of proficiency, this is a trial to see how steadfast a Belmont can be.

I love this game for what it is. I don't bemoan it for what it isn't.

I’ve been a fan of Scott Wozniak (full name: The guy who owns Sonic Jam, Scott Climax Scatt "Daniel""Resourceful" "Will Eventually Take a Look at the First Mega Man""Your Next Employee""W.E.T.A.L.A.T.F.M.M.""Scott the Woz" Buff Wazniak Wozniak (working title) and his series, for quite a while - finding myself drawn in by Wozniak’s style of comedy, as it’s incredibly appealing - with him combining skits, and offbeat humour with informational and opinionated insight into usually quite unknown topics.

Scott isn't the type to shy away from committing to a bit, with an impressive array of in-universe-continuity; that fans of the series fondly reference amongst one another.

JONTRON

an American YouTuber, commentator, comedian, and reviewer known for his reviews of retro, odd, and bad video games and movies. 

He reviews video games, movies, and television shows of varying genres in a retrospective and comedic manner in his YouTube web series JonTron. Jafari was co-creator and former co-host of the Let's Play web series GameGrumps before his departure on June 25, 2013, and co-created the video game entertainment website NormalBoots.

NOSTALGIA CRITIC

Nostalgia Critic is an American review comedy web series created, directed by and starring web comedian Douglas "Doug" Walker. The series initially launched on YouTube on July 3, 2007, before moving to Walker's own site, That Guy with the Glasses, then to Channel Awesome. The show follows Walker as the title character, a bitter and sarcastic critic who mostly reviews films and television shows from his childhood and recent past, usually with comically exaggerated rage. The show often alternates the Critic's angry rants and humour with analysis of the episode's subject.
