The Naming Machine

When I was four, I built a naming machine. Cardboard, plastic bottles, PVA, poster paint, mostly. It had a serious face, withstood my mother’s every attempt to make it smile. I knew it was important, this junk embued with prophecy, teacher of a strange language to my ever-learning tongue.

But my naming machine was a lazy teacher. With my schoolfriends, I learned the labels; fat, old, crazy, poor, ugly, gay, different, wrong, the way four year olds do, unquestioning.

When I was six, I dismantled my machine. I still don’t recall why. I recycled its parts, began the long unlearning. I always was a precocious child, taught to deconstruct and question.

Eighteen, I began building a new naming machine, developing my creation.

Once fat, now beautiful; once old, now respected; once crazy, now wise; once poor, now oppressed; once ugly, now unique; once gay, now community; once different, now perfect; once wrong, now right, all right.

Now I am finally brave enough to point my naming machine at myself. Finally, I am ready to discover the words at my core, like an echo: An open question, question, Question.
