Fremantle Corona Diaries. Jennifer Jackson, director, Paper Bird, Children’s Books & Arts, Fremantle. It’s been extremely quiet inside @paperbird_books the past few weeks. But rapid adaptation has resulted in a huge workload behind the scenes. Unlike many businesses in Fremantle, Paper Bird has not had to shut up shop – except for the odd time when the street has been eerily deserted and the doors have been closed for the safety of staff – but much of the business has shifted online. Jen has been encouraging people to buy online and the shop is delivering books (free delivery to the greater Fremantle area). A six-month subscription has been popular, with people receiving one book a month for six months, across all age categories from babies through to older young adults, and with free home delivery across the metro area. ‘Home Club’ is on every day with authors and illustrators taking over @paperbird_books live Instagram and doing a video from home. School holiday drawing and story workshops have been delivered online for free via Zoom. And book club has shifted online instead of in store. It’s certainly been busy and stressful but Jen says there’s also been a lot of energy from everyone involved, working out the different ways to connect with people. “There’s definitely a sense that people are reading more, also using books and storytelling to relieve anxiety. And we’re getting a lot of feedback that parents are loving having more time to read to their kids. The library is closed, which is such a loss, so people are reaching out to book shops.” The store has been slightly busier this week. “People seem a bit more confident to go out. It’s a bit of a destination for people. The stranger girl

I sit at one of my favourite places in Fremantle, and one of the waitresses brought a small cup and put it at the table across of mine.

I could not resist looking at the girl. I thought, wow... She is about to drink an espresso. I took my camera and I tried to be invisible. I wanted to capture her facial expression at the moment of her first sip, but of course, she noticed and gave me that smile with those beautiful green eyes.

I did not ask her name!

Fremantle Corona Diaries. Jane Fraser, CEO, Fremantle Press. Publishing happens behind the scenes. But it is affected by what happens at the shopfront. Like so many items, book sales have dropped. There’s online shopping and e-books but it doesn’t make up for foot traffic—browsing—which makes up a huge percentage of sales. It’s been a stressful time for Jane, working through the finances of the not-for-profit publishing house. The concern is the unknown. “We don’t know just how far our sales income will drop. But we will get through… We’ve been doing a lot of online marketing to promote all our new books. It’s great that booksellers are now open and seeing our reps and getting a taste for the books that will be coming out around October. Fingers crossed that when everything gets back to some kind of normal, people will be buying books for Christmas.” In the early days of the pandemic, Jane set about ensuring staff had the ability to work from home. As it turned out, only a couple of people worked from home. With a staff of only 10 and most of them part-time, @fremantlepress has the space for staff to distance themselves from each other. Government subsidies helped keep everyone employed. Jane says it’s been really nice to be able to come in to work and see people. Some internal meetings and all external meetings have been done via Zoom. Aside from no contact, it’s also been a time saver. “The benefit of this is not travelling into the city for arts sector meetings. It’s been fantastic. Probably more people have actually attended the meetings. It may be a thing of the future. I hope so.” The ‘No visitors’ sign on the front door of Fremantle Press is now down. “It felt really good to pull that down and scrunch it up... The South Mole Lighthouse in Fremantle - ⁣ ⁣ When I first came to Perth about 7.5 years ago, this was the place where I slept in my camper van for months ( Many other backpackers used to sleep here too). Waking up with the view of the ocean. ⁣ ⁣ With new (and enforced) port and parking rules, campervans are not a common sight here anymore. ( Which is ok, it got super crowded 😅)⁣ Now it’s mainly fishermen who are here for a good catch and people on an evening stroll enjoying the breeze. ⁣ After all the years I still enjoy coming back to the green lighthouse to enjoy the view. ⁣ ⁣ Do you live close to ocean?
