TWOIAF/Fire & Blood: Thoughts on Rebellions
Warning, Spoilers Ahead…
In the previous two posts of a World of Ice And Fire, I recapped the rebellions Aenys faced in his first year as king. The second post was long so I’ll share my thoughts of the events in this post.
Aenys was weak and indecisive. How he can be so surprised over these rebellions? It has been less than forty years since the Targaryens conquered Westeros. A conquest that caused tens of thousands of deaths. There are still survivors of the Conquest alive during Aenys’ reign. We have countries in the real world that were conquered/colonized centuries ago, and there is still much resentment, anger, and bitterness over it. Forty years is nothing in comparison.
Aenys was told to use Quicksilver at Harrenhal and he declined. Dragons are the only deterring force the Targaryens have – if they aren’t going to be used to put down rebellions, what do the opposing forces have to fear? Minus the dragons, the Targaryens are just another Westerosi lord.
Aenys’ sole contribution to resolving these disputes was to send Lord Alyn Stokeworth. Even that decision was multiple choice: sail to the Vale, stay in King’s Landing, pursue Harren the Red.
The Rise of the Dragons mentions Aenys’ resentment of Visenya but he should thank the Old Gods and the New that he had her. Visenya was the one to take decisive action to end these rebellions. Visenya had to be seething at Aenys’ weakness and indecisiveness. Aenys should also be grateful that various lords stayed loyal and took their own initiative to resolve these conflicts.
As to why the four rebellions erupted at that time – I understand why the rebels sensed a weakness – Aegon the Conqueror is dead, Balerion unclaimed, Rhaenys and Meraxes are dead, Aenys is unfit for the throne…but Visenya, Vhagar, and Orys Baratheon are still alive. All three are battle-hardened and took active parts in the conquest. Maegor has shown to be an individual who is not be messed with. Did the rebels assume Aenys wouldn’t allow Visenya to take charge? Does Visenya seem like someone who can be put in the corner. Or did they pull a D&D and simply forget about Visenya, Vhagar, Orys, and Maegor? Visenya and Orys lost a sister to the Conquest, Orys lost his hand in the war with Dorne – there was no way they were going to stand aside and let their dynasty be overthrown.
As for the individual rebellions, I wrote most of my thoughts on Harren the Red post, but I would love to know more about him: actual descendant of Harren the Black, descendant of a survivor of the original Harrenhal staff, a Joker-type spreading anarchy in the Riverlands for fun?
The Vale – Jonos had to seriously resent Ronnel to not only overthrow him but also to murder him. Kinslaying is such a taboo in Westeros that Roose Bolton and Tywin Lannister refuse to commit the crime. Jonos threw Ronnel out the Moon Door without a second thought. Would the Crown have intervened if Jonos simply proclaimed himself the new Lord of the Vale as opposed to the “King of the Mountain and Vale”? Jonos was stupid to rely on the natural defenses of the Eyrie to protect himself as Visenya had already proven that strategy to be useless during the Conquest. Jonos and fellow conspirators must have peed themselves when Maegor and Balerion (!) showed up on their doorstep. I wish we had been told Visenya’s thoughts on the death of Ronnel – the one moment of softness she receives in the entire story is when she takes Ronnel on a dragon ride after securing the Vale’s submission. Sending Maegor and Balerion, along with the execution of the conspirators even after their surrender – could be an indication of Visenya’s anger over the situation.
The Iron Islands – Goren Greyjoy was an intelligent man. He knew he couldn’t battle dragons, but he could put down a crazy drowned priest. In a decisive moment, he ended Lodos Reborn’s rebellion, preventing an invasion from mainland forces, and was able to secure a boon from the Iron Throne. Said boon enabled Goren to expel all Septas and Septons from the Iron Islands. Goren is now vastly elevated in his fellow Ironborns’ esteem as he has now eliminated the hated Faith of the Seven from the Iron Islands. Take that, Lodos!
Dorne – Not surprising that Dorne had the largest rebellion. The Dornish War was less than thirty years ago, and massive atrocities were committed by both sides. The Targaryens must take most of the blame since they started the confrontation with Dorne. Hatred runs deep between the sides. It’s noted that few Dornish lords participated in the rebellion so most of the Vulture Kings’s forces could have been survivors/descendants of the survivors of the Dragon’s Wroth. I imagine if you aren’t a rich Dornish lord, and your home/land/family destroyed by fire-breathing dragons, and you don’t have the resources to rebuild – well, joining a rebellion against the dragon overlords might seem like a great idea.
Was Deria Martell aiding the Vulture King? After all, it was Deria’s father that made peace with Aegon Targaryen, not Deria. Does Deria have more of her grandmother in her than her father? Deria’s grandmother, the Yellow Toad (sorry, I’m blanking on her first name) was defiant to the end. Deria may wish to war against the Targaryens but knows it’s a battle she can’t win, so as the Vulture King rampages, she throws her hands up and says “so sorry, Vulture King bad, wish he would stop” while doing nothing to stop his rebellion?
Orys Baratheon died happily while avenging his most humiliating defeat. Orys’ death left Visenya truly alone – she is now the last of her generation of Targaryens. We don’t receive any details of Orys’ relationship with his sisters, only that he was very close to Aegon. Argella Durrandon Baratheon – did she mourn? Was she relieved to be a widow? Was she still alive at this point?
So many fun characters involved in the Vulture Hunt – “Savage” Sam Tarly, Ellyn “Lady Nightsong” Caron, Harmon “No-Nose” Dondarrion! Would love to know more about these characters. Don’t mess with marcher lords or ladies, they’re crazy!
Up next, the one-close bond between the brothers dissolves.

j0ns@ isnt 100% to me but stans disbelieving in the ashford tourney interpretations now because it didnt fit what they wanted makes me lol now its invalid by having robert arryn when its not supposed to be a 100% recreation, harrold harryn is too much coincidence that it signals sans@'s suitors ,saying the final targaryen suitor died is coping because like Valarr Targaryen, jon also just died the difference is he'll get resurrected
my favourite excuse is "well nobody married lady ashford" well duh its a tourney,it might not even happen in a romantic light more for desperate political reasons the denial is hysterical
Hi anon,
I understand their need to constantly be “debunking” the theory because how dare Sansa have a parallel in another book and thereby be an important character in the series as a whole😤
I don’t think Robert Arryn is the chink in the armour they think he is. With all of Sansa’s previous suitors & Harry, there have been concrete plots to get her married to them. She was officially betrothed to Joffrey (the Baratheon suitor) before the Tyrells brought in Willas (the Tyrell suitor) and were actively planning to spirit her away to Highgarden right under the Lannisters’ noses, only for them to catch wind of the plan (if it can even be put that way) and forcefully get Sansa married to Tyrion (the Lannister suitor). As for Harry, Baelish’s northern plan comes into play which rests on the heels of Sansa getting married to Harry. Not to mention Hardyng is a pretty unknown House to just throw in, dontcha think?
Lysa brings up Sweetrobin in passing, with no plan or even an actual intention to marry them. This is literally never brought up again when Lysa is alive, or even after. The only one repeating any similar sentiment is Sweetrobin himself, who has a crush on Sansa but clearly doesn’t know what it means. So should we take Sweetrobin as a valid suitor? I mean, do crushes count? Because then why not include a whole legion of other Westerosi men who are interested in Sansa and make it a watertight argument. Baelish absolutely wants to marry Sansa, he even asked Cersei for Sansa’s hand in marriage, why isn’t he included? “Because…” yeah you’re there. My point is, the arguments against Baelish & SR are both strong but take a step back to what they have in common, Sansa’s story is leading somewhere else and thematically neither of them fit. One is less serious than the other & thats SR. Be fr with your SR arguments jesus.
Moreover, the Ashford theory and Sansa’s suitors don’t have to be perfect analogues of each other. Hell, we know nothing about Lady Ashford except that she’s 13 and involved in a tourney that was disrupted, and that Sansa is 13 and involved in a tourney that will be disrupted. Man, does this girl have to be named Pansa Ptark now for it to be a valid parallel? Why does George even bother naming his books, he should start calling them the war of the roses and be done with it. Why are we even reading political fiction, let’s just open today’s newspaper. Tf.
And I don’t think I can add anything to the Jon - Targaryen suitor theories that hasn’t been proposed + your points too. We consider R + L = J to be true, first and foremost. The “white guardian”, “dark hair” “the Targaryen suitor being dead” etc etc. In the same vein as the argument above, does he need to be named Jonnel/Jonos now to be taken seriously? Well, he is in another parallel but even that is “reaching” so what can I say? 🤷‍♀️ They’re not going to see what they don’t want to see, but, like you said, watching them jump through hoops and perform mental gymnastics and open a whole circus in the process is truly hilarious lol.
You do bring up an excellent argument, anon, that all of Sansa’s previous suitors have been for her claim to the North, so her marriage with Jon might also be for political reasons. However, the slight exception of Joffrey who was a King in his own right (lmao) exists; which again sort of foils Jon and his actual claim to the iron throne. So I feel that while a political marriage is totally on the cards (solves one too many problems for my liking 😤), Sansa might marry him out of love considering her theme of independence and not-marrying-for-claim. But who am I to say 🤷‍♂️
Lastly, nobody crowned Lady Ashford the queen of love and beauty so Sansa isn’t marrying anyone is sort of funny. Well, Loras gave Sansa a red rose amongst all the young maidens present there, are they a foreshadowed endgame pairing now? Also, how does one come up with Sansa is gonna end up as Lady of the Vale by marrying HH and Sansa is going to end up alone in the same breath?

what kind of weird sex rumors would be in a stark family tree history book?
So much "kids fathered by an animal" stuff. Probably a lot of rumors about wildlings, skagosi, or mountain clans being fathers as well. And obviously from there, re: the men, lots of skinchanging rumors, probably weird rumors about being like, hypermacho sex freaks (we already get that, imo, in f&b with alysanne and the book placing most of the blame for the practice of prima noctus on the first men rather than the andals or valyrians and never mind that the valyrians really took to that concept).
I think in a book that covered the she-wolves history, we're bound to get all sorts of rumors about how serena's kids are illegitimate and she was a crazy sex fiend, or that sansa was frigid and cold to poor jonnel, as a way of justifying their usurpation, and then even more about cregard and torrhen (serena's boys) being unworthy lil whoremongers. probably some crazy stories about affairs and sex parties up in the mountains.
i like to think there's some witchy rumors about the daughter of torrhen stark who married ronnel arryn - she's an outsider, she follows the old gods, she probably looks wildly different from a lot of the people there, and ronnel has a rival, jonos, who was probably looking to spread all sorts of rumors about her.

In the situation from a previous ask where Bran is sent to Riverrun to become Lord and takes the name Tully, could you see Robert (Jon Arryn) offering to betroth to Myrcella to offer the new Lord of the Trident more royal backing or would Lord Bran be better off marrying the daughter of one his new bannermen? One of Jonos Bracken or Tytos Blackwood's daughters?
I think it probably would have made more sense in terms of political imagery for the new Lord Brandon Tully to marry a daughter of the Riverlands rather than Princess Myrcella. A marriage between a displaced Stark and a Baratheon royal princess might only emphasize how (relatively) little connection the new Lord Tully had to his new domain. Lord Bran might have been the son of a Tully mother and the grandson of a Tully lord, but he was neither a native of the Riverlands nor inherently familiar with its culture and aristocracy (compare, say, Robb’s reluctance to acknowledge as his heir presumptive a descendant of Jocelyn Stark, somewhere in the Vale). Now, with a foreign (to the Riverlands) bride (even less connected to the region than Bran himself), Bran might have seemed less like the rightful heir to House Tully and more like a foreign puppet installed by a faraway royal government to rule the Riverlands from King’s Landing instead of Riverrun.
It’s impossible to say who would’ve made the best Riverlands bride in such a very different scenario, though. Would the Blackwoods’ ancestral worship of the old gods be seen as too alienating to the majority Seven worshipers among the new Lord Bran’s vassals, with Bran himself raised to worship the old gods? Would the long-standing quarrel between the Brackens and Blackwoods make Bran Tully reluctant to pick one side or the other for marriage to support his new regime? Would there be more pressing geopolitical concerns to answer with a diplomatic marriage (like, say, marriage to the Mallisters if Balon Greyjoy threatened war in such a scenario)? Again, its far too different from our story to speculate.

Terros' Next Top DILF: Round 1
Tumblr media
Hello Friends and welcome to our next poll, Terros' Next Top DILF!
Here we will vote to determine who is, in fact, the hottest dilf in all of Terros/Planetos/etc.
As you'll be able to tell, the definition of DILF got looser as I worked to reach the coveted 64. So, the actual definition of father may be looser, and they may be younger than what we would consider a 'DILF' but they all are, at a minimum, someone who is considered a father by someone. The seed here was based off AO3 stats (ie, I searched every character and ordered them based on how many fics they featured in, then seeded from that).
Poll will probably open tomorrow, June 26th. Unsure on what time for now!
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to drop in. <3

Do you think there's a difference between Maegor before head injury and after head injury or there no difference? Besides him dying and coming back because of Tyanna's magic (is that canon or a popular headcanon that everyone treats as fact?), I love reading your undead Maegor headcanons/writings by the way!!
Awww! Thanks! I really enjoy writing about this weird version of Maegor!
I mean there are some differences between Maegor pre-head injury and post-head injury. Although it had been shown he had certain compulsive and cruel personality even before this (Like the whole deal with the stable boy and the horse, although i would take all this with a grain of salt as much as the kitten he supposedly killed when he was three year old) that temper is a bit more controlled than after his injury. The executions that occurred during the rebellion of the Vale could be considered cruel, but, after all, they were rebellious lords that were punished after killing their Lord and imprisoning his family. It was not a senseless act of violence like some actions Maegor commit after, but it was a punishment given by the hand himself. Although Maegor could had been merciless and let them go to the Wall, as i assumed most of them wanted when they threw Jonos Arryn out of the moon door, waiting he showed them mercy. Maegor made an example out of them and hanged them, to show the power of the crown and Aenys as king. Post-head injury Maegor has this more hectic actions that are clearly not calculated as before. He imprisioned blameless people and tortured them, the best example his own Nephew that he thought must know something of Alyssa and his sibling's location (probably he also had some false ideas that HE MUST had been part of this conspiration even if there was no way for him to be. Hmmmm, probably effect of his head injury?)Also, he is far more easily annoyed than before, when he clearly was repeatedly teased by Alyssa and he would answer with just words. Those are the things of the top of my head that i can think of. Surely there are much more examples of it, but, oh, i would have to try to read fire and blood again to look closely and refresh my memory.

Do you guys headcanon former Queen Sharra as being born a Arryn or married into the family?
Bc if she's a Arryn from birth, in the "Arryn sees ghosts AU", I imagine her seeing the ghost of her sons around the Eyrie after Jonos killed Ronnel and was then killed himself by Maegor.
I personally think her as a cousin to the Arryn’s. I think it’s fitting with the themes House Arryn’s got going on.
Also, that is super dark and I’m 100% on board with it. The Arryn’s are subjected to horrible burnt corpses, mutliated ghosts stumbling around. It’s why they use the moon door, it’s more ‘humane’ aka prevents the ghosts from appearing in large numbers.

Let's pretend this is the portrait Sharra Arryn sent to Aegon Targaryen in an attempt to "sway" him - The Flower of the Mountain, Queen Regent of the Vale. The last Queen of the Vale, really.
Her line didn't make it - her son Jonos usurped his older brother Ronnel and later killed him, and he was himself killed when king Maegor came to the Vale.
Tumblr media
"Queen Sharra of the Vale, regent for her son Ronnel, took refuge in the Eyrie, looked to her defenses, and sent an army to the Bloody Gate, gateway to the Vale of Arryn. In her youth Queen Sharra had been lauded as “the Flower of the Mountain,” the fairest maid in all the Seven Kingdoms.
Perhaps hoping to sway Aegon with her beauty, she sent him a portrait and offered herself to him in marriage, provided he named her son Ronnel as his heir. Though the portrait did finally reach him, it is not known whether Aegon Targaryen ever replied to her proposal; he had two queens already, and Sharra Arryn was by then a faded flower, ten years his elder."
"Sharra Arryn had strengthened the defenses of Gulltown, moved a strong host to the Bloody Gate, and tripled the size of the garrisons in Stone, Snow, and Sky, the waycastles that guarded the approach to the Eyrie. All these defenses proved useless against Visenya Targaryen, who rode Vhagar’s leathery wings above them all and landed in the Eyrie’s inner courtyard. When the regent of the Vale rushed out to confront her, with a dozen guards at her back, she found Visenya with Ronnel Arryn seated on her knee, staring at the dragon, wonder-struck. “Mother, can I go flying with the lady?” the boy king asked. No threats were spoken, no angry words exchanged. The two queens smiled at one another and exchanged courtesies instead. Then Lady Sharra sent for the three crowns (her own regent’s coronet, her son’s small crown, and the Falcon Crown of Mountain and Vale that the Arryn kings had worn for a thousand years), and surrendered them to Queen Visenya, along with the swords of her garrison. And it was said afterward that the little king flew thrice about the summit of the Giant’s Lance, and landed to find himself a little lord. Thus did Visenya Targaryen bring the Vale of Arryn into her brother’s realm."

TWOIAF/Fire & Blood: The King Who Flew Flies One Last Time, Lodos Reborn, A Vulture King Emerges, and Harren the Red Runs Wild...
Warning, Spoilers Ahead…
Aenys has only been king for a few months and he’s already endured a challenge to his authority in the Riverlands. Unfortunately, his tepid response has only encouraged rebellions in other regions.
Aenys returned to King’s Landing only to discover that Lord Ronnel Arryn, The King Who Flew, has been deposed and imprisoned by Jonos Arryn, his younger brother. Jonos then proclaimed himself the “King of the Mountain and the Vale”.
In the Iron Islands, a drowned priest proclaimed himself Lodos the Twice-Drowned, finally returned from visiting the hall of the Drowned God. It’s been 36 years since Lodos drowned himself, so that was quite the visit.
In Dorne, a man calling himself the Vulture King rose in the Red Mountains of Dorne. Princess Deria Martell denounced the Vulture King but thousands flocked to his banner. The siren call of avenging the evils the Targaryens visited on the Dornish was too tempting to resist.
Lord Harmon Dondarrion wrote to Aenys of the Vulture King: “This Vulture King is half-mad, and his followers are a rabble, undisciplined and unwashed. We can smell them coming fifty leagues away”.
The Vulture King must have taken great offense to the question of his personal hygiene as Blackhaven, home of the Dondarrions, became his first target. The Vulture King’s followers stormed the castle and the Vulture King himself sliced off Dondarrion’s nose. His followers then torched Blackhaven and marched away.
Aenys sat befuddled and indecisive in King’s Landing. Grand Maester Gawen stated the King couldn’t understand why this was happening. The small folk loved him, why don’t these rebels? If they had grievances, why not come to court and tell him – he would listen! Aenys would make a decision only to countermand it shortly after. For instance, he ordered Hand of the King Alyn Stokeworth to sail a fleet to the Vale to aid Ronnel Arryn, only to recall the fleet as he was afraid to leave King’s Landing undefended. As if King’s Landing could be undefended with Visenya and Vhagar only a short flight away on Dragonstone. The only concrete decision Aenys made was to send Queen Alyssa and the children to Dragonstone.
Aenys thought the next move should be to hold a grand council to discuss options. Dowager Queen Visenya decided to skip the council and issue orders.
The Rise of the Dragons has a passage not in The World Of Ice And Fire or Fire and Blood: “During Aegon’s reign, Visenya often assumed the daily tasks of ruling while Aegon was off on his royal progresses. Visenya’s role changed when Aenys assumed the throne, and she became more an advisor – and an often unwelcome one – rather than a co-ruler whose decisions had the force of law. It could truthfully be said, however, that Dowager Queen Visenya was still the most influential woman in the realm during Aenys’ reign – even more so than his own queen, Alyssa. But Visenya’s lack of direct power – and her clear preference for his own son, Prince Maegor – would eventually alienate the two entirely.”
First, Alyn Stokeworth accompanied by a few hundred men entered the Riverlands to hunt down Harren the Red. (To be fair to Aenys, he had input into this decision – but only this decision).
Second, Lord Allard Royce of Runstone (on his own initiative) assembled loyal bannermen and demanded the release of Ronnel. Jonos granted that request by throwing Ronnel through the Moon Door. The Eyrie is impregnable to any conventional assaults, but Visenya had a solution to that: sending Prince Maelor astride the recently claimed Balerion the Black Dread, Jonos’ lackeys lost their nerve upon spotting Balerion and threw Jonos through the moon door in an attempt at mercy. Maegor “mercifully” executed the traitors by hanging instead of burning. The World of Ice and Fire notes the traitors all died by Maegor’s hand, so Maegor seems to be a “man who passes sentence must swing the sword” type. Hubert Arryn, a cousin of Ronnel and Jonos, was installed as Lord of the Eyrie. Hubert had six sons by his wife, a Royce of Runestone.
Third, Goren Greyjoy, the Lord Reaper of Pyke, marshalled a hundred longships to descend on Old Wyk and Great Wyk. He put thousands of Lodos’ followers to the sword. Goren then had the head of Lodos prickled in brine and sent to King’s Landing. Aenys was overjoyed by the gift and granted Goren a boon. Goren asked for the right to expel every septa and septon from the Iron Islands, which Aenys reluctantly granted.
Fourth, was the Vulture King. Princess Deria continued to denounce the rebellion but did nothing to stop the Vulture King. Many suspected she was sending the Vulture King men, money, and supplies. The Vulture King had thirty thousand men under his command but made a fatal mistake in splitting his forces in two.
The Vulture King took his force to march west against Nightsong and Horn Hill Lord Walter Wyl, the son of the Widow-Lover, commanded the force sent to besiege Stonehelm, seat of House Swann.
Orys “Orys One-Hand” Baratheon left Storm’s End one final time to defend Stonehelm. He smashed the Dornish forces. Walter Wyl was then delivered to Orys: “Your father took my hand. I claim yours as repayment.” He then proceeded to take Walter’s other hand and both feet as “usury”. Apparently, Lannisters aren’t the only one to pay their debts.
Orys died on the march back to Storn’s End from wounds taken in battle. Davos, Ory’s son, said he died content, smiling at the rotting hand and feet.
By this point, the Vulture King had to abandon the siege of Nightsong. He marched east only to have Lady Caron (of Nightsong) join with a strong force of marchers led by the the noseless Harmon Dondarrion. Then “Savage” Sam Tarly decided to join the party with several thousand knights and archers. Savage Sam personally cut down dozens of Dornishmen with Heartsbane, the Tarly Valyrian sword. The Dornish broke and tried to retreat to the mountains only to be cut down by the marcher lords in the “Vulture Hunt”.
The Vulture King himself was taken alive and tied naked between two posts by Savage Sam, dying up thirst and exposure, his corpse feasted upon by vultures. His death is considered the end of the Second Dornish War but few Dornish Lords actually participated.
Harren the Red was both the first to rebel and the last to be put down. Harren was cornered in a village west of the Gods Eye. Harren slew Lord Alyn Stokeworth before being cut down by Bernarr Brune, Alyn’s squire.
King Aenys knighted Bernarr Brune and granted gold, offices, and honors to Davos Baratheon, Samwell Tarly, No-Nose Dondarrion, Ellyn Caron, Allard Royce, and Goren Greyjoy. Prince Maegor returned to King’s Landing to cheering crowds and proclaimed a hero. Aenys named Maegor as Hand of the King.
Up next, my thoughts on the rebellions.

Si pensaban entrar, NO LO HAGAN.

I wouldn’t say that the Arryns necessarily struggle with fertility issues, at least as a blanket statement. Not only did Ronnel and Jonos have a cousin, Hubert, who could inherit the Eyrie after their fraternal fallout in Aenys’ reign, but Hubert himself apparently fathered six sons with his wife. Rodrik Arryn had four children with his first (unnamed) wife and a daughter with Daella (no I’ll never stop complaining about him either). Jeyne Arryn’s father (who may have been one of Rodrik’s sons) apparently fathered several brothers to Jeyne, who died with him fighting the Stone Crows. Indeed, the succession crisis following Jeyne’s death derived from the fact that there were any number of Arryn relations vying for power - first cousin Arnold, fourth cousin Joffrey, and indeterminate relation Isembard. More recently, while Jon and Ronnel fathered only two living sons between them, their sister Alys had no problem giving birth to nine children of her own.
Anyway, all of this is to say that while it’s possible Robert Arryn inherited genetic issues generally associated with House Arryn, I’m not sure the evidence we have suggests that the Arryns have large-scale health issues as a dynasty.
Beyond epilepsy, how much of Robert Arryn’s problems do you think are nature or nurture? If Ned or Stannis had been allowed to foster him away from Lysa how do you think he would turn out?
That is an open question. It's fairly obvious to say that some of Sweetrobin's problems are distinctly "nurture," his spoiled attitude shows every bit the signs of an overindulgent parent. Keeping him away from Lysa (and more importantly, Littlefinger) would go a long way into improving him from a physical and mental health perspective.
But how much of his arrested development is actually genetic? The Arryns are noted as having the "purest Andal blood" but also struggle with fertility issues. Obviously, this is GRRM tagging a stab at the whole "super-special bloodlines" idea both of aristocracy in our own world and in fantasy literature in general (even if that message isn't *always* picked up).
So I can't really say, and it's tough to answer your second question because while Eddard and Stannis would certainly raise him differently, the nature/nuture problem crops up. It's easy to say that Sweetrobin under Eddard would learn the importance of duty, not shirking the hard tasks, and other "Northern virtues" as expressed by their culture, but Sweetrobin might actually be headstrong and develop in his own way. After all, it's not like Robert Baratheon changed from being fostered with Jon Arryn.
Thanks for the question, Speedy.

“The Arryns are direct descendants of Andal invaders, who sailed across the Narrow Sea and came ashore at the Fingers.”
