Two minutes for holding (my heart) - a spinoff (1/?)
So who's "the skier hunk" Joonas kept nagging about in the hockey player!Joel x figure skater!Aleksi fic I finished last Sunday, and how do Olli and this guy know each other? Read below and find out! 🏒🎿
The pairing is incredibly niche and based on absolutely nothing except for my vivid imagination, and while this was written mostly for my (and Sofo's) entertainment, it does serve a purpose as giving some sorta background for the Olli/Joonas spin-off I may or may not have already started writing.. 😏
s/o to @yamisofopue for the concept art 🖤
~
“Oof,” Joonas puffed once he had finally sat down on his seat, making room for Olli to do the same. “It’s gonna be a long flight.”
“Yes, especially sitting next to you,” Olli chuckled. When Joonas punched his arm, he laughed louder.
“Hey?! At least you won’t have to suffer through Joel’s lecture on the 2006 Olympic finale again.”
“True,” Olli admitted and giggled at the middle finger that appeared in between the seats in front of him.
“Really though, I’m the best option you could get in this entire team. You should be thankful,” Joonas said, blinking his big blue eyes at Olli.
I am, Olli almost said, but swallowed his words with a quiet sigh, like so many times before. However, a crowded plane was not the place Olli had planned to have that conversation.
“We’ll see about that, at least as long as you–”
“Hi Olli,” a familiar voice interrupted him. He turned and found himself looking at a face he hadn’t seen since the previous summer.
“You! Hi!” Olli tried standing up, only to be pulled back to his seat by the belt he had tightened just seconds ago, and when he finally released himself of it, he was so ahead of himself in his attempt to hug Joni that he bumped his head on the overhead lockers.
“Oh! Are you hurt?” Joni’s bright smile greeted him when they were finally face to face.
“Not at all!” Olli reassured, although the top of his head was pounding and most likely growing a massive lump. “But hi!”
“Hi!” Joni laughed again and wrapped his arms around Olli. “Long time, no see!”
“I know, right? I didn’t notice you at the gate though?” Olli wondered as he sat back down to let people pass them on the aisle.
Olli saw a faint blush spreading on Joni’s cheeks as he smiled sheepishly.
“I saw you, but…you were so deep in your chat with–”
“Joonas Porko, pleased to meet you,” Joonas leaned over Olli to shake hands with Joni who nodded politely as he introduced himself. His eyes returned to Olli once he had seated himself across the aisle.
“Well, here you are now.” Olli had to restrain himself from reaching over to embrace Joni once more.
“Yeah. Here I am,” Joni sighed. The rosy red colour seemed to have stuck on his cheeks.
“Are you excited?” Olli asked and internally rolled his eyes at himself immediately after. He really couldn’t have come up with a more useless conversation starter if he had tried.
“For sure!” Joni seemed happy to reply nevertheless. “So excited, in fact, that I stayed awake most of the night.”
“Oh, tell me about it. Didn’t get a wink all night,” Olli mimicked Joni’s weary expression.
“Then why did you keep your alarm blasting for twenty minutes this morning…”
“Anyway,” Olli ignored Joonas’ muttering, “are you well prepared? When’s your first competition?”
“Well, it’s been quite a winter so far,” Joni began, but as soon as the man lifted his hand to fix his hair, Olli was already lost in thought of what it had felt like running his own hand through the soft locks.
~
✨ flashback tiiiiiiiiime ✨
Olli was unenthusiastic about the small-scale sports gala Joonas had dragged him to, and even more so when it dawned on him they didn’t serve alcohol there. He couldn’t imagine anything more unpleasant than being forced to socialise with a bunch of strangers all night while listening to empty speeches in between. To do so while sober was far worse.
When Joonas seemed too busy batting his eyes at some field athlete, Olli sneaked away to take a little breather in the men’s room. There, he bumped into Joni, who had come to do exactly the same while his own friend had abandoned him to chat up the entire women’s national football team.
Delighted by the coincidences in their circumstances, they ended up spending the rest of the evening together, snickering about how everyone else there seemed so self-important and confident while all the two of them wanted to do was to be back in their own beds, sooner rather than later.
Once Olli finally got to collapse on his beloved mattress, he decided to check his phone one last time. The smile that had appeared on his face when he saw a new follower request on Instagram had hardly faded when his alarm woke him up again the next morning.
After almost a week of staring at Joni’s profile, the phone almost slipping from Olli’s hand that was sweating from how nervous he was, he finally gathered himself and sent Joni a direct message. Very simple, just to ask what was up and if he had waxed his skis for the weekend already. He regretted the stupid joke the second he sent it and spent the next few hours contemplating deleting the message and his whole Instagram account, until Joni answered with a picture of himself doing exactly that: applying wax to his skis with a sweet smile on his face. Olli giggled into his pillow looking at it, and that was the start of their months-long DM exchange, during which Olli learned, for example, that Joni had a tendency to forget his skis by the side of his car after he had changed back into his normal shoes (Olli found this quite relatable indeed) and that he’s been trying to reduce his caffeine usage because it’s disturbing his sleep, which gave Olli the final push to make another move and ask the man out for caffeine-free coffees the next time they’re in the same town.
But it just happened that it wasn’t until the summer that their paths crossed for the second time, once again by a happy coincidence.
“What brings you here?” Olli asked. As if by command, his heartbeat had sped up the moment he had spotted Joni at the parking lot of a local hiking track.
“Training camp,” Joni said as he fumbled with his activity watch, the corners of his lips twitching. “And you?”
“Signed a new contract with the local team in June. Just taking a break from moving in my new flat.”
“Ah!”
For a while they just smiled at each other, and Olli’s mind wandered back to all their late night conversations via Instagram; he could only hope Joni was currently doing the same.
“So, umm…you going that way or..?” Joni asked him, nodding towards the path disappearing in the forest.
“Actually, I was advised to take the route clockwise. Heard there’s a pretty steep ascent at some point, and apparently you avoid it by going that way instead.”
Joni clicked his tongue. “I’ve always known hockey players are lazy.”
Olli squinted and let a smile form on his lips. “At least we’re not arrogant, like cross-country skiers.”
Olli’s heart did a somersault when Joni winked at him before turning at his heels, heading to the path Olli had not planned on taking. But when Joni turned to look over his shoulder as he walked away, as if to ask “You coming?”, Olli fixed his cap and jogged after the man.
After spending the whole morning unpacking suitcases and boxes, all the while trying to ignore how the hideous city view from the window was nothing like the one from his previous home in Oulu, unwinding in nature was something Olli really needed in that moment. To do so together with someone he might be crushing on a tiiiiiiiiny bit was heaven-sent. For the first few kilometres of the journey, when the path was broad enough for them to walk side by side, they talked about everything and anything except professional sports, glancing at each other from time to time to see if the other was smiling from ear to ear as well. At times, the backs of their hands brushed against each other, or they bumped each other in the shoulder, and each time made a kaleidoscope of little butterflies flutter their wings inside Olli’s stomach. And when the trail narrowed to a mere footpath, Olli appreciated the opportunity to take a good look at Joni’s finely-shaped skier’s buttocks. (It sure was a sight he intented to memorise for later use.)
The ascent was rather steep indeed, so that when they reached the top of the cliff after which the whole trail was named, they were both out of breath and sweaty underneath their clothes. Joni was the first one of them to solve the situation by simply removing his shirt and hanging it over his shoulder as he turned to admire the view; Olli, however, was admiring something else entirely.
It didn’t take long for Joni to notice this, and soon an attractive shade of red that wasn’t just because of the late July heat spread on the man’s cheeks. Olli, a bashful fella as he was, felt the same happening to his own face.
They could hold each other’s gaze for as long as five whole seconds before Joni turned back to the view and Olli put his own mind to rubbing his neck which was still dripping with sweat. He wasn’t left to do so for long, however, as Joni cleared his throat and nodded towards the wilderness opening in front of them.
“Your new hometown’s looking pretty swell.”
“Yeah,” Olli chuckled. His brain kept trying to come up with something more to say, and when he finally could think of spluttering out a nonchalant this is practically my backyard now, a pathetic I miss Oulu though, or even a Porko-ish so are you, the silence had already prolonged to the point where saying anything at all would have been somewhat awkward. (More awkward than Olli already felt, that is.)
Suddenly Joni’s eyes widened and he pointed his finger somewhere down the slope. “Oh, look!” he whispered. “A deer!”
“Where?” Olli whispered back and stepped closer to the edge.
“There! Can you see it?” Joni kept pointing into the woods.
Olli squinted his eyes. “No, I can’t.”
“It just went behind that tree. Come, you’ll see it better from here,” Joni gestured to Olli to stand next to him. Without thinking twice, Olli walked over, and next Joni’s hand was on his shoulder, guiding him to turn in the right direction.
“Over there! You see it now?”
Olli focused his eyes on the spot in the forest down below where Joni’s finger was pointing at, and indeed, he could see movement amongst the white birch trunks.
“Oh! Oh, it’s beautiful,” Olli whispered, although he could only barely make out the shape of the animal from so far away. However, he had seen deer before, and there was no reason to doubt this individual wasn’t as cute as its conspecifics.
“Isn’t it.” Despite the fact Joni was standing right next to him, Olli was still surprised to hear his soft voice speaking so close.
Closer than they had ever been before, Olli suddenly realised.
Holding his breath, he turned his head slowly to glance at Joni, whose eyes were still following the deer. A small smile danced on Joni’s red lips, and by some primitive instinct, Olli licked his own.
The deer must have continued its journey out of their field of view, since Joni sighed longingly. Then he turned to Olli, and judging by the look on his face, he hadn’t expected to have Olli quite so close either.
A moment and another was spent just looking into each other’s eyes before Joni’s gaze, too, wandered lower on Olli’s face, stopping somewhere below his nose. It was almost too easy for Olli to lean in and close the gap between their mouths with a tentative but tender kiss.
The walk back down had, as a result, been filled with quite a few breaks filled with quick stolen kisses and hearty giggles against the other’s cheek or neck or temple, until at last they were leaning against Olli’s car, attached by their hips as well as by their lips.
Olli felt woozy when Joni finally broke the kiss.
“So, umm… That new apartment of yours,” Joni said with a low voice, “is it close by?”
~
Olli had been so lost in the memories of waking up next to Joni in his half-empty apartment, of deep, lingering kisses at six in the morning when the sun had awakened them, and of the steamy (figuratively as well as literally) shower they had shared before Joni had to be back at his training camp, that it wasn’t until Joonas was climbing over him to go to the bathroom when Olli realised he had not been listening to whatever Joni had been talking about for the past few or so minutes. Joni, however, seemed happy enough to just have Olli staring at him with a dopey smile on his face. Still, Olli felt guilty about not having paid attention to Joni’s anecdotes and he wanted to make up for it, regardless of whether or not Joni had even noticed.
“Wanna hang out, at some point? To catch up properly? When you have a day-off, of course.”
Joni’s expression was brighter than the sun shining in from the small window behind his back.
“Sounds like a plan.”
~
An opportunity to spend more time together was given to them the following week when the hockey tournament was yet to start and a couple of days had already passed since Joni’s performance in the sprint competition. They had occasionally run into each other at the athlete cafeteria and even ended up in the same elevator once when coming back to the hotel from a practice, which had only added to the anticipation of finally being able to sit down and have a proper chat, just the two of them.
Joni was adjusting his gloves when Olli stepped out of the front door of their hotel.
“You ready, hockey boy? Let’s put those thighs to work,” Joni grinned and was already sprinting down the street before Olli could come up with a witty comeback.
They kept their jog slow-paced enough to not be too breathless to continue where they left off in the plane, stopping from time to time to stretch or take touristy pictures next to local landmarks or the giant Olympic Rings that had been erected in the city centre. After nearly three kilometres, they decided to take a little break before turning back, and sat down on a conveniently placed bench by the wintery central park.
“How nice is this?” Olli sighed and closed his eyes as the February sun warmed his face.
“I know,” Joni’s sigh sounded equally blissful.
Olli didn't know whether it was due to some quirk of his subconscious or just a silly whim, but he rested his head on Joni’s shoulder. He let out a satisfied hum when he felt Joni’s head fall against his.
They sat like that for a while, enjoying the warmth of the sun and of each other, but then Olli’s neck started aching from the strange angle and he lifted his head, only to keep it close enough to touch his nose against the light stubble on Joni’s cheek.
Joni looked back at him, his eyes visiting Olli’s mouth before meeting his gaze, but when Olli thought about kissing the man, the sight in front of him was replaced by a blond head of curls, a plump, red pair of lips, and eyes bluer than the sky above their heads.
Olli was simply unable to blink them away, like he had been for quite some time.
With Olli zoning out once again, Joni was the one breaking their gaze with a silent chuckle.
“We had fun last summer, yeah?” Joni said, seemingly avoiding looking up at Olli again.
“Yeah,” Olli smiled.
“But, umm…I’m afraid things have changed for me since then.” Joni’s eyes kept staring at his lap as he scratched his stubble.
“Oh? Well, who’s the lucky, umm, person?”
Joni laughed, although Olli wasn’t sure at what.
“It’s…complicated,” Joni then said, a grin remaining on his face, only not not quite as bright.
“I see,” Olli said and felt his pulse quickening, “I, err, sorta…have a similar situation, I guess,” he managed to say before a frustrated sigh left his mouth.
“Oh yeah?” Joni finally looked at Olli, eyebrows raised. “Don’t tell me that you, too, have fallen for an unattainable teammate?”
Olli smiled and shrugged, even though what he really wanted to do was frown and punch himself in the face.
“Regrettably.”
His confession seemed to bring Joni great amusement.
“Well, I’m happy you seem so delighted about my misery,” Olli smirked and lightly shoved Joni’s shoulder with his fist as the other man kept chuckling to himself.
“No, I’m sorry,” Joni shook his head, “it’s just the ridiculousness of this whole thing. Like, aren’t we a hopeless pair?”
With that, Olli had to agree, so he joined Joni in the silent laughter.
Eventually, when both their shoulders had stilled again, Olli suggested they should turn back before their sweat dries up.
“We didn’t come all this way to catch a cold, did we now?”
They were a lot more silent on the way back to the hotel, but at the door before stepping in, Joni put his hand on Olli’s shoulder and pulled him into a warm hug.
“I hope things will turn in your favour,” Joni said quietly. Olli wasn’t sure whether he meant the tournament or the thing about being in love with his teammate, but he returned the wish regardless.
“Same for you, bro,” Olli said and patted Joni’s back, a part of him wishing the man would let go of him already so that Olli could go back to this room to lash himself for his clumsy word choice.
“That teammate of yours really doesn’t know what he’s missing,” Joni added when he withdrew from the embrace.
“Ah, well, you would know,” Olli smirked, embarrassed by the heat spreading to his cheeks.
“That’s true,” Joni mirrored Olli’s expression. “Perhaps I should tell him.”
As if that would make any difference, Olli wanted to tell him. On the other hand, there was something tempting about the suggestion, when he really stopped to consider it.
“You know what?” Olli said after a moment of pondering. “Perhaps you should.”

Poor Joni Mäki. Final leg for Finland, fighting for second place (and winning that fight!), and then Bolshunov 1) hits him and 2) tackles him after the finish line. Wtf dude. Even if Mäki had broken the rules (which replays show that he didn’t, even though it was tight), that is so beyond unacceptable.
