after wonderland succumbed to the tyranny of the red king, and after the alice was knighted and summoned by the white king to fight the great jabberwock, cheshire found himself siding with them for the simple reason that a wonderland ruled with tyranny will be a bland and boring one indeed. he helped train this alice then, unwittingly forming a bond with him. because as mad and curious as this realm is, there is something madder and curiouser happening in that boy. and he wants more of it.

Backstory 

Surely it was written in the stars! How else could such a sweet soul curdle and rot? Or is hemlock still poison- even when it’s just a sprout?  Lachlan was born out of something more sinister than love. It was a wordless decision, to try for a second child- that was just what was supposed to happen, right? The first child forced their parents into marriage, but if they could just push out another one, maybe everyone would stop whispering about the rushed nuptials and loveless marriage. Maybe they could love this one without resentment, since it’s their choice now, right?  They would try once more after Lachlan, but that child was looked at with the same calculating, discerning gaze as the other two. The Rose family would live in some deranged harmony together, until their father had enough of the charade. The divorce papers were served at Lachlan’s ninth birthday party, and within a week his mother was on a plane from London, back to her hometown of Red Creek.  The children stayed in London. That was what their father wanted, so that is where they stayed. Now, the trouble with being raised by wolves is how comfortable you get with snarling and biting your way through life. To take what you needed, or starve. Lachlan took what he’d been taught, honed his personality until he was just as cutthroat as his father raised him to be. He fell from grace at age sixteen, when he was caught selling fake test answers to his fellow students. He didn’t know the material well enough to pass the exam, but he could so easily make himself look better in comparison, so he took action.  He didn’t stay to see his father’s reaction to his suspension- he just packed his essentials and got on a plane to Detroit, where his mother was waiting to drive him to Red Creek. He stayed there until he graduated, and while he was miserable in such a small town, it allowed him to realign himself into something different, something worthy of being loved. It took untold thousands of dollars in dance classes and acting lessons, but Lachlan was accepted into the University of Michigan’s musical theater program. Finally, he was somewhere he felt truly talented, truly loved. He’d been performing since he was young, and he’d always loved the stage, but he didn’t realize just how talented he was. Immediately after graduation, he booked a two-year contract on a national tour, and for the next six years he performed in multiple off-broadway productions, and was in the ensemble for two broadway shows. Any progress he'd made towards being an actual good, honest person was reversed once he got into the industry. Just like in his childhood, manipulation and sabotage were rewarded. Once again, he had to be a knife, to be cutthroat, just like his daddy taught him. He was a rising star, a true up-and-comer, constantly told he was destined for incredible things. There were rumors that he was being courted as a lead in a new broadway show, but no one ever got to find out if they were true or not- Lachlan had abandoned his apartment in New York and moved to Red Creek almost overnight.  Lachlan has been in Red Creek for five years now, but he has not abandoned his passions- he just made them a bit smaller. When he’s not at the school, he can often be found at the Parrish Center for the Arts, planning or rehearsing or performing various productions. He also frequents the Lakeside Grill every Friday night, and can be found at the Warehouse on Saturdays. 

Wanted Connections

parents of his students/former students- lachlan has an almost cult-like following amongst his students, and he is well-known for picking favorites and offering his most talented students the world, while neglecting the others. these could be parents of either type of student, and maybe they love him and are grateful for how he mentors them or their talented kid, or maybe they resent him for playing favorites and taking small town theater a little too seriously.

an actually close friend- he has 1 (one) person who actually knows him and has seen him be vulnerable. probably is the only one to know how tough his childhood was. one of the only people in his life that he loves unconditionally. maybe they've been through something together, or maybe they're just platonic soulmates. either way, this is the only healthy-ish relationship he has- and even then, he probably manipulates them too. it's just his nature!

casual friends- lachlan is one of those people that shines such a warm, bright light on the ones in his favor, but leaves others out in the cold. he is very blair waldorf, in that he expects everyone to have some kind of use for him, otherwise why keep them around?

high school friends- people he was close with for the two years that he was in high school. they would have known him when he was actively trying to be a good and honest person, and they either don't recognize who he is now, or constantly make excuses for the way he treats people as disposable.

exes/flings- keep things interesting!

people he has abandoned- the natural evolution of some of his friends. people who he felt didn't offer him anything, or raise his standing. people who were once in his spotlight but have now been tossed under the bed (like jessie in toy story 2 during that sad song)

his siblings- his older and younger sibling, who would have endured the same childhood. they hate each other but are also co-dependent. im eventually gonna send this in as a WC but if u wanna be cute and take one of the spots i won't be mad <3

I mean, Charlos, of course. I guess I don’t even need to explain myself on this one, but I guess I’ll do it anyway. I will say that in my personal opinion Carlos is the sexiest, in the sense that he has that sinuosity in his movements and that elegance and finesse in his gestures that just makes him incredibily sexy.

If you want to look at it in a figurative way, I see Carlos like Matthew Macfadyen in Pride and Prejudice, so hot in his austerity.

And Charles? Prettiest boy ever, so delicate but also clumsy and silly and sexy in that completely self conscious and self confident and effortless way that attractive people who are constantly giggling their asses off are. He’s the epitome of babygirlism and sassiness, but you should not doubt him - which is exactly what Carlos never does.

Figurative example? Jonathan Bailey as Tim Laughlin in Fellow Travelers during the ‘50-‘60s episodes.

Together? Sexiest ship alive.

2. 💖 (Ship that needs more love)

Since I am deeply undecided, I’ll offer two options.

First one, George Russell and Max Verstappen, also known as Gax. Why, do you say?

Their dynamics would be incredible, apart from the entire obvious enemies to lovers mechanism, let’s spend some time talking about their characterisation - because you all know how much I like that.

George, your next door British boy, curses in lower case and says Blimey and Crikey like it’s normal. He cares about his looks and his appearance. He’s thirsty for competition, neat, honest, proper, terribly impatient although he tries his very best to not let it show.

Now, Max? Curses in bold, replaces Hello and Hi with Shit and Fuck. Doesn’t care about his appearance as much as he cares about his own cats. He’s thirsty for competition, neat, honest, proper, terribly impatient and he lets it show.

Conclusion: they’re basically the same person, just in different fonts, similar in their dissimilarities.

One is Calibra Light, the other is Calibra Bold, and they’ll clash their horns against each other like angry deers, but then they’ll notice how good they actually look together, how good they work together, how good they match and boom…

No chances for anyone else, two puzzle pieces completing each other.

Anyway, second one? Alexander Albon and Logan Sargeant. And tell me if I even need to explain myself on this one.

They are the ship, they have everything!

Logan blushing furiously and falling for Alex’s teasing and looking at him longingly and smiling like a lovesick fool whenever Alex gives him attention or jokes about his obsession with America. He’s so enamoured with Alex that he even started copying some of his attitudes, because he’s that in love.

But let’s be clear, Alex is falling just as hard, because Logan is so cute and he likes the way there’s someone who actually looks up at him - not only figuratively, lol, because Nicholas is tall - and he blushes in such a cute shade of red when he calls him Logie Bear.

Alex might be a little bit obsessed with him.

3. 💔 (ship that makes you sad)

I honestly don’t know how to answer this one, I guess it is based on personal interpretation.

I would probably say that the one that makes me a little bit sad is Dando.

Ironic, you may say, but let’s think about it for a second.

They started to bloom a little late, because Lando was still attached to Carlos and Daniel isn’t as careful around boundaries as he should be in certain situations, and although Lando has clearly grown into an overconfident young man that we love to see thriving, he does initially still need some limits - like Carlos and Oscar had religiously respected.

But then they had bloomed, they started getting along like a house on fire. People do not realise how hard it actually is to become so close in such contexts without having any strings from before - like Alex and George or Charles and Pierre or Oscar and Logan and so on.

Lando went to his house in Perth, voluntarily, just to spend time with him and do crazy stuff on his farm and have the time of his life with someone that is ten years older than him.

But they get along so well that who does even care about age differences?

But just as they started to really develop through their relationship, shit happened and they got separated.

I’m really glad they still bloomed - sharing clothes like in Monaco and sharing jet rides and visiting each other and going to dinners together and stuff - but it does make me a little sad the thought that, in some twisted way, things still tried to put themselves through their building affection.

It also makes me sad the fact that, because of all of that, they didn’t get to shine as bright as they deserved.

Wicked part one

So here we go again, another Broadway to Hollywood adaptation. If you have been following the blog long enough, you know that I have some strong opinions and that goes double for anything theatre related. It’s a special interest of mine and one I take very seriously as there is no shortage of misfires in this subgenre of movie musicals; however, that doesn’t mean every single was a faceplant, look no further than the works Lin Manuel Miranda with the adaptation of his first show In The Heights, and his directorial debut with Tick Tick Boom. It is possible to do the source material justice, which is why I was trepidatious about Wicked, so let me spin you a yarn about my experience with part 1.

For the uninitiated, Wicked is an adaptation of author Gregory MacGuire’s first novel in a 4-book series that reimagines the lore of the Wicked witch of the west (who given the name Elphaba, a nod to Oz creator L. Frank Baum). The musical itself reimagines the book significantly as well, focusing on the relationship Elphaba and Glinda the good witch of the North, who are both college roommates and eventually best friends.

So if you’re familiar with the source material, then you’re going to nitpick quite a bit, I mean with a nearly 3 hour run time how could you not? A handful of scenes ran long in the tooth and the padding was painfully obvious, but it didn’t really hurt the end product.

And allow me to put my fan boy goggles on, and what a product it was! I was mesmerized by stunning visuals that made each and every scene come alive! Even that darkest forests felt alive, which is fitting for the wonderful land of Oz. Many of the set pieces felt like they cast members and they felt like they had their own stories to tell, much like how a theatre actor has to make the characters which they play their own.

From the costumes to the props, they all excel at visual storytelling.

Casting was filled with obvious choices such as Cynthia Erivo, Arianna Grande and Jeff Goldblum, and unexpected casting such as Michelle Yeoh… who I had no idea could sing.

Yeoh’s gift for playing both graceful and stoic characters, really shine as the intimidatingly strict Madam Morribel.

Jeff Goldblum was a pique as the Wizard.

Fiyero is one of my dream roles, and Jonathan Bailey of Bridgerton fame, encapsulates why I love the character with his natural charm and swagger. He had many in his numbers questioning their sexuality (and maybe a few audience members...)

Ethan Slater was a lovable simp as the pathetically lovestruck yet kindhearted munchkin Boq.

Marissa Bode was delightful as the tragically beautiful Nessarose, and as I applaud Universal for casting an actual disabled actress for the role as many know how I am a huge champion for representation.

And of our leading ladies own these roles; the outspoken and at times controversial Cynthia Erivo put every ounce of talent into the role of Elphaba, being Broadway Royalty I would expect no less. Grande, who I think is an amazing comedic actress channel her Cat from Victorious/Sam & Cat into the role of Galinda/Glinda, however there were instances where it felt like she was trying to impersonate the original actress to play Galinda, Kristin Chenoweth. But they worked brilliantly as a duo and their chemistry bled over into real life as they became thick as thieves after filming.

And what’s a musical without dancing? Because OH MY GOD was that dance choreography legendary! I was in love and if I had paid for the screening it would more than make up for the abhorrent prices of movie tickets! And besides, this is the filmmakers’ style.

And of course, the most important ingredient being the music, every song is here with little extra, and I am delighted by this fact because adaptations tend to cut songs, characters, etc. To get the full affect I highly recommend watching in IMAX or whatever equivalent your theater has.

This shouldn’t have worked, but Director Jon M. Chu a man who has dance coursing through his veins was determined to bring the modern legend of theatre to life, and this goes for the set pieces, performances and so on. I love his work and if part two is anything like this, it could be his magnum opus.

It won't change anyone's minds about musicals, but for people like me who had to fight the urge to sing out loud, you are going to have a Wicked good time! (I'm sorry)
