Firstborn Thanatos
This is both my oldest and youngest character! Oldest because he's a Firstborn, and youngest because I made him yesterday haha. This might be the last character I make this year 😥
Firstborn Thanatos was born alongside Trahearne during the first Cycle of Dusk. His Dream told him of a far-off land, a mysterious desert ruled by a cruel and undying king. His Wyld Hunt was to travel to this land, learn it's history, meet its people, and extend an olive branch of peace to their leaders. Though his Dream was incomplete at best. That was his task: learn Elona so that the next generations of Sylvari may know it.
He docked in Amnoon, a stranger in a strange land. He was met with suspicion, fear, and amusement. Many incorrectly assumed he was some sort of Awakened that had gotten lost in the kelp forests of the Elon River. He requested an audience with the city's leaders, where he proceeded to ask questions about the regions history, it's people, geography, ecology, and economy.
It fascinated him.
He fell in love with Elona. Its people, it's food, it's strange creatures. He raised Iboga on a farm east of Amnoon for a time before departing southward to the exotic domain of Vabbi.
The Awakened there fascinated him. They behaved like any society would, but with meticulous care and reverence for the dead. He explored the Necropolis, the Hanging Gardens of Sebhorin, and Vehtendi Academy, though the latter disturbed him deeply. He was beginning to piece together an image of Elona- one of a deeply wounded place ruled through fear and indoctrination.
But his task was to learn, not to interfere. He struck a deal with the deans of Vehtendi Academy. In exchange for him teaching classes on sylvari anatomy and history, they would allow him to attend classes free of tuition. Curiously, he also had a penchant for the same necrotic magic his brother Trahearne showed.
He was taught a different type of magic, however. Rather than learning how to conjure minions or create wells of dark power, he was taught how to use the power of the Desolation. His tutor in this matter was a battle-scarred Awakened woman called Nivara, a disciple of Joko. He studied and taught magic there for many years, all the while accumulating a veritable horde of knowledge for the Pale Tree.

Palawa Joko is by far the best villain GW2 has had so far.
The dragons, and to a slightly lesser extent, Balthazar were written like forces of nature. They're just doing what they're doing. Which is fine, it's just not super compelling. Like, we literally saved two of them. They're just deathly inconveniences, more than anything.
Joko wants something, he's theatrical, he's self-aggrandizing, he won't take anything seriously because that would be boring. He's played as a joke, which undercuts the narrative a lot, but that's also true to form. Overall like a 6/10 villain, but that's incredible by GW2 standards. Reminds me a lot of Scarlet Briar and LWS1/2, which was the most interesting the game has been narratively.

Ok so you just get concept sketches for now bc I was hanging out with family today but

Meet my Vampire Cowboy
His name is Adir, he just woke up from an ~500 year long nap and is very mad Joko is somehow back.
He has a pistol and a scythe, and likes protecting farms and beating the shit out of Joko’s awakened.
#gw2#my art#as you can see I felt left out when everyone was showing off their vampires and cowboys#so my brain went ‘what if I made someone who was both?’#and then the chatacter formulated in my mind#I’ve still got some shit to figure out about him#but for now I know that he was a guy who died in the fight against joko and got brought back by a necromancer#who was trying to figure out how to resurrect the dead with blood magic (make them undead so joko can’t undead them again)#(fire with fire that kind of shit)#then something happened (figuring that part out)#he had a nice long nappypoo#then woke up about 500 years later#I think he was a Dervish in his previous life#and he thinks guns are cool as hell when he discovers them#I’m still struggling to figure out his look#trying to combine cowboy clothes with elonian ones#it is..kind of working

I think of my commander as having a place at the Grove, Dreamers terrace where her brother and other friends live. Officially it's her home but she hardly ever lives there. When she's been through so much, she doesn't feel right returning to the Grove. Aurene is her priority. She will try to find lodging near Aurene where she can and when she knows where Aurene is. She also worries that after Mordremoth she'll be seen as different or a monster because she's a dragon champion. She feels, because of her trauma, that she doesn't belong around the innocent new saplings.
Officially, Dreamer's Terrace is her home. She's always welcome there. In reality, it's her brother Islwyn's home and she spends her time travelling.
Does anyone's Commander have a permanent residence? I'm thinking about Alba and how the Grove has never been his home, because he's lived in active warzones half his life, and spent the other half in those same places cleaning up post-war. The idea of dreamers terrace being "his" home is almost laughable. At most he may have laid his head there a night or two as a sapling. It's like if you couch surfed at your cousin's house twice in your youth and people later started calling it your house as a result.
Personally I view the home instances not as "where the Commander lives" or "Commander’s house" but as "a community the Commander is welcome to visit and stay in," i.e. that cousin you can couchsurf with temporarily, but I don't consider Alba as having any permanent residence and don't want him to honestly. 🧍♂️ But I'm curious to see if anyone else views it differently, i.e. does your comm live in one specific place, do they own a house or other residence, do they return there after every adventure, etc.
#pof spoilers#Path of fire spoilers#I also have an au where she does again and is Awakened by Joko#In that au she's terrified of returning to the Grove

Replaying PoF for the Return to Event and my god is Nyra's choice for supporting Sunspears so very funny in retrospect.
She has no idea she will die in the desert; all she thinks now is "let's support the Sunspears so after we take Balthy down we will go kill Joko and everyone will cheer my name." People listen bc she knows how to speak with authority in her voice.
Best thing? She is only 24 here!
Of course, what she thinks will happen WILL happen but she has no idea. She just knows bc she's Alysannyra Ainsaph and she can't possibly die to.. *checks notes* fire right

Airell's magic tier list because I should go to sleep
S Tier: Mordremoth, Shadow of the Dragon - while Airell did not have the pleasure of feeding on their magic consciously, plant magic is the most compatible with them. Aurene's brand - purified magic, very tasty, very good for their stomach, very 'at hand'. Chak are Airell's comfort food. @lady-quen's Maelmordha's magic is a forbidden fruit so naturally - S tier.
A Tier: Mistonium - directly from the mists! tasty! Vinewrath might be plant magic and might be compatibile, but Airell didn't really like the taste. Leyline would be in S tier but it's hard to consume just like that. Zhaitan and Mouth of Zhaitan - magic compatibile with Airell because they're a necromancer, but not as compatibile as Mordremoth's. The smell and texture are a big downside. Same goes for Greer.
B Tier: Kralkatorrik, Brandmass and kralkatite. Forbidden foods! Tasty, but tummy hurts! Waypoints would probably be tasty, but Airell never got around to feeding on them. Also, even more difficult to feast on than wild leylines. Airell never got to siphon Joko's magic, but they imagine it would be tasty as death magic but would expect it to be chewy and boney.
C Tier: Jormag and Claw of Jormag. Not bad but not good either. Very chilling! Decima's magic really bothers their stomach, otherwise she'd prolly be in B Tier.
D Tier: Airell hates fire magic. They describe it as way too hot and spicy and claim that it 'makes you feel like you're melting from the inside out'. So Primordus and Balthy end up here. Ura too, because steam is hot. Void is basically toxic to them. They ate a risen chicken once, as a dare. Apparently that was the worst thing they have ever eaten.

Me posting about a non-plant?? Here to shove my other Commander out into the wild. Yes, this is my third. Why do you ask?
Commander Fortaleza Guidingstar. She is as feral as they come. She was the kid who had to be put in time-out because she wouldn't stop biting things. At a young age, her village was attacked by the frozen. It was a small one caught off guard. She and a small group of kids her age were able to escape out of the village and with Bear's guidance she was able to keep them and herself in one piece till they reached help.
From here she became known as "Guidingstar." Having lost her parents she took shelter in Bear's Hodge in Holbrek. She was rough and tumble, often getting into plenty of fights for silly reasons. Eir took the chance to point this bundle of chaos in a productive direction.
She goes through the story like normal joining the Vigil. She's named the commander of the Pact under Trahearne however when each dragon falls some of their magic clings to her. After her death, the magic starts to seep into her changing her in some ways but she can't focus on that now. She charges on to fight Balthazar yet but this time wins. Of course, it wasn't that simple. His magic reached her too and burned away parts of her leaving more room for the demon magic she used to get back and the dragon's magic to grow in her. The different magics show in various ways on her. Part of her rots from the death magic. Vines and thorns sprouted from her back.
She does her best to hide these changes determined to see the cycle end before she reaches her second end. She charges through the Joko campaign she's not about to let some lich stop her there's a dragon that needs killing after all. Karlk's changes are the most obvious as he managed to half-brand her. Aurene stops her from total branding gets launched back and is half-branded into a wall. Aurenes magic was able to save her. She wakes up and is in a panic. She can't feel Aurene anymore. Braham finds her trying to break her way out of these crystals and helps her. She demands to be brought to Aurene so he does. He helps her walk, and she finds Aurene completely branded and she is heartbroken. She's always been a child grieving their parent but it feels like she's the parent mourning her child. She just crumbles. Her emotions build up and she's a mess someone tries to calm her but just as this outburst of emotion remnants of Aurene's magic laches to help break some Ezá and her brand. While Aurene was fully able to recover Ezá wasn't. Another magic type clinging to her to fill the hole left by Balthazar's fire. Kralk and Aurene's influence on her is public knowledge, but she does her best to keep the rest hidden. Of course, rumours wrap around her almost as much as magic does.
Each dragon leaves their mark on her and once the cycle is broken it leaves her confused and how she functions and how much of a Norn she truly is. Pri and Jormag leave her veins on her hands flowing with ice and fire. Kralk branding that stretches across her torso and body. Her leg had slowly been rotting away to the point that Taimi had to help design something to help her walk. Plant life on her back. She fears she could be the void's second coming as she can feel the magic being unrestful. All she can do is bid her time. Maybe some sky wizards will help her. Maybe they'll make it worse. How it started vs How it's going.

Excerpt from this story from Yale Environment 360:
Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country with the third largest surviving area of tropical forests, has a new strongman president. Environmentalists are concerned. They fear that, after a decade during which the country’s deforestation rates have fallen by almost two-thirds, Prabowo Subianto will unleash a new ecological orgy, cutting, burning, and despoiling some of the world’s greatest rainforests.
The 72-year-old former military man, who first rose to prominence under the country’s late-20th-century dictator President Suharto, was elected by a wide margin in February and will take office in October. He has promised to double GDP growth through expanded mining and industrial development.
Indonesia is already in the midst of a mining boom. It produces half the world’s nickel, a metal vital for the batteries used in electric vehicles. The International Energy Agency says that Indonesia could up its share of total supply, while demand for the metal expected to double by 2040.
Nickel will help other countries reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. But it does the opposite in Indonesia, where most of the metal is mined from beneath rainforests and is refined using energy from coal-burning power stations. On the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, over a third of the forests now lie within nickel mining concession areas, according to a study published this month by Mighty Earth, a global advocacy group which works in the country.
Now Prabowo wants to expand mining and refining further. “By processing our natural resources domestically, I’m optimistic that we would be able to witness double-digit economic growth,” he said shortly before the election.
But at what price for the rainforests? Some environmentalists fear the worst, as mines and refineries proliferate. But there are optimists who argue that the Western investors and manufacturers that Prabowo will need to fulfil his economic promises could leverage more sustainable development. “Nickel mining is a dirty industry,” says Amanda Hurowitz, who runs Mighty Earth’s program for protecting forests from commodity trades, “but with the political will, Indonesia can clean up the nickel supply chain.”
Under departing president Joko Widodo, Indonesia has often been seen as an environmental success story. Jokowi, as the one-time slum-dwelling carpenter is widely known, slowed forest loss dramatically by banning rapacious palm-oil and pulp companies from receiving new licenses for forest clearance. He also looked to restore nature and suppress forest fires by rewetting millions of acres of peat swamps that had been drained for failed agricultural and forestry projects.

I love path of fire cuz the commander reached maximum levels of doing insane things to save the world.
Well I havent done futher dlcs but I hope they get even crazier.
Everytime a character says "This is an insane idea" Im like yeah, what else do you expect from them?
Clear and reasonable thinking didn't kill a dragon and here we have a dragon, a god and an undead idiot (praise joko)

Oughh when you get the idea for a character but you want them to work into lore but your brain broke and the wiki isn’t enough
#my ass scrounging through gw1 and gw2 lore rn#so far the concept of this character#they’re undead but in a different way as an experiment by a necromancer who wanted to see if they could make corpses that were unable to#be used by joko in the fight against him (fight fire with fire kind of thing)#(this is in that fight back in like pre gw1 times Turai Ossa and shit like that)#and then this is where things get fuzzy and lost for me#I feel like after they get joko down sometning happens#either becuzse they don’t want undead around anymore they ‘dispose’ of him#or maybe the fight ‘killed him’#he gets burried in a tomb somewhere#and then ages later something happens to wake him up and free him from the tomb (maybe the dragon brand??)#and now he’s just walking around fucking up awakened and trying to figure out what’s going on in this century

I wanna know what everyone's commanders are scared of... BEYOND "losing people" or "being a failure" what kind of fears and phobias do they have let's GO.
Alba has a "healthy respect" (discomfort and fear) of fire, (obvious reasons) heights, (because im scared of them too) and dark places. He can force himself to power through these things.
But he has an absolute phobia of giants. They petrify him. You can imagine his fear in the Raven Sanctum when he was "alone" in the dark with giants stomping around in the fog, just barely out of sight. He couldn't breathe the whole time and barely kept himself from having a panic attack.
He's also afraid of undead things to some degree - Risen and Awakened both kind of freak him out, but he can fake his way through handling them. Having to ask Kaz to disguise everyone as Awakened to steal Joko's army was not great though. Didn't like that. It's because they're visibly reanimated dead. Visibly decayed, exposed bones, etc. Doesn't like mordrem wolves or necromancer minions either, same reasoning. He gets mad when Auruim brings his wolf around, mainly because it creeps him out. Trahearne used to tease him about it too.
I think he also tends to panic in any situation where he can't move. So being held immobile by Joko was horrifying, watching him reanimate himself and approach, knowing he couldn't run or fight back no matter how badly he needed to. Something about not being able to move or act is scary.
And then of course losing people/failing/people getting hurt because of him, yada yada.

Ashhe Kenna Baszar - AU Commander & Future Goddess of War, Fire, and Valor. She was born to two remaining Sunspears in 1305 in a nearby sunspear outpost. She was trained and raised with the hidden group of Sunspears, until she was 15. In 1320, Joko killed and awakened her parents and some other sunspears. With this, he sent a raid to find and kill the outpost. Ashhe and her 13 year old sister, Deborah were able to flee. They survived for months on their own, Ashhe taking the lead and doing everything to protect her.
Eventually, they made it to Ebonhawk where Logan, Seraph, and the charr were fighting. Despite Logan and the others telling them to go and hide, Ashhe and Deborah stood their ground and helped them fight.
Afterwards, Logan took them into his care, and they became his wards.
In the five years between then and the start of the personal story, Logan became their father figure and trained them. Deborah joined the Seraph but Ashhe refused. She wasnt happy with the way Logan and the Seraph acted sometimes, but she still loved Logan and wanted to show her thanks for taking them in.
Logan would eventually learn of this through her two friends, Lady Kasmeer and Lord Faren, and her desire to join the vigil.
This would send her on the route to the level 30 personally story, where she would meet her girlfriend, and becoming commander
