Only Friends - The Voice of the 80's Babies
Long post
Inspired by this post by @chicademartinica and bestie @thegalwhorants's comment about the wardrobe. Also this post from @blmpff which really made me think I'm in the right direction...
Before I get into this I just wanna say that I'm posting this very hesitantly as it's a very personal view of this show (possibly within the Jojo-verse). I might be reading too much into this and projecting my own experience and the fact that Jojo is about my age, but OF feels very much a reaction of my generation. I realize that most of what I'm going to say will sound familiar and relevant to everyone (not just 80's babies) but I'll try to explain the difference between what I read as a general generational experience and a universal experience.
I said it before and after watching the first ep it has never been clearer that Only Friends is what happens when 80's babies are given a chance to settle scores.
Everything about this show screams I WAS A TEENAGER IN THE 90'S!
First of all - the clothes! EVERYTHING they're wearing is like it's taken from my high school photos 😅 I know fashion is fluid and trends will make a comeback periodically, but given what I feel they're trying to say, I believe it's intentional.
The Sex of it All
It's like a direct reaction to the way we were raised and the relationship my generation has with sex. This is very regional and cultural, but generally speaking sex was not discussed as a natural aspect of life and relationships. Sex was either shameful, dirty, reproductive, or (the worst option) over discussed without healthy boundaries. My parents' generation didn't have the tools to discuss sex with their children in a healthy way because they were also denied this conversation by their parents. So, they either hid it or overshared.
So, my generation was raised (by western media basically) believing that everyone must have sex and our social standing is directly linked to whether or not we were having sex (who said American Pie?). We weren't given the option to have different views. We were trapped by this extremely deformed view of sex and relationships.
Watching this show and the discussion around it feels like creators are calling bullshit on everything we were told about sex.
Stuck in the Middle
I'm going to generalise here, but basically people who are just slightly older than us (meaning my generation) have this very black and white attitude towards sex - there's the right time to start having sex, your partner matters (in the way that you should be in love or in a relationship), relationships are monogamous, and kink is a deviation (don't even get me started on queerness - you were either gay, straight, or a crossdresser).
On the other hand, 90's babies were born into a much wider and open world that gave them the opportunity to get a much broader picture and view about relationships and how sex plays into them. This is even as basic as just having a wider vocabulary to talk about it.
My generation was, however, stuck in the middle, left to really hindsight our way through our perception of sex and its place in relationships.
In my 20's I've witnessed so many conversations where people were analyzed over the fact that they choose not to have sex like there's something wrong with them. Why are you not having sex? What's wrong with you? You're waiting for love? - don't waste your time. You're just going to fuck whoever? - that's just wrong. There's no winning.
Furthermore, when considering what Jojo said about the discussion around queer sex in queer shows and bl - my generation was raised with the idea that being queer (which was then just being gay) was all about who you have sex with. No one ever said anything about love or gender. When I was figuring out my own sexuality, being queer was about who you wanted to sleep with, not who you loved. We still see this today when people believe that our queerness is defined by whether or not we are having queer sex, and I believe this is at least part of what @bengiyo is talking about when he talks about the internalised homophobia. This is so much of my generation carrying and passing it on because we were denied these conversations.
So Now What?
Now, creating a show that is about sex, queer sex, and how it plays into queer relationships is reclaiming the conversation about queerness as an expression of love as well as sexuality. We deserve to discuss these issues as a generation that was denied these conversations whether queer or not. And somehow, these issues are discussed more freely and openly within queerness as it has the advantage of being free of heteronormative notions.
Another reason I believe this is generational is the fact that Jojo is consistently having this discussion within his shows. I don't know how to explain it, but his shows feel like screaming liberation, like he's walking around with a baseball bat (preferably Only Friends branded) and smashing these false ideas one by one. Which is why I believe we need to look at this show as part of the Jojo-verse shows along with The Warp Effect, 3 will be free and Gay OK Bangkok. Jojo is on a mission.
Expression Within The Show
Ok, so what am I getting at after I had you read my trip to the shrink?
I believe that ALL OF THIS is expressed in the show through the group dynamics we see in our friend group. They all represent different notions and they will fight over dominance. This is the power struggle that my generation is trapped in. We need and deserve to say our peace.
This is what I meant when I said that OFTS is what happens when you're an 80's baby with shit to say.
As usual thank you for reading my ramblings. I hope you get what I'm trying to say, and clearly have issues 😅 so feel free to comment and give perspective...

I'm making a persona 5 au of svsss (au in that it was the modern world that was the au, and sy brought something along with him), and I'm having a lot of fun with it!
Sy dies the same way as in canon, but this time as the leader/a member of the Chinese branch of phantom thieves (when and how a Chinese branch was made can be handwaved). He's a fellow wild card, a fool arcana, he's got third eye and a fully realised but unawakened persona.
When he awakes in sqq's body, he starts on as canon, but starts to notice strange fluctuations on qj that indicate the presence of the meta verse - and not only that, but a palace. The system notices the mysterious appearance of a new program it can't delete - the meta nav.
Without the key words, however, Sqq can't get in. He can't find who it belongs to, nor what it might be. One thing is for certain though: lbh cannot find out. The blackened protagonist with free reign of the meta verse? An undoubtedly powerful persona of his own?? It'd be the breakdown incidents all over again! He wouldn't stand a chance!
It takes a lot of arguing with the system about narrative directions and plot holes for it to not direct him to the nearest ripple in reality. In dreams, igor agrees (he has a lot to say about his new situation, but Sqq kinda ignores it).
Then, one day, he finds a fluctuation strong enough to fit a human, and slips right through, his scifi fantasy ninja outfit appears in flames, and he is faced with the distortion of qing jing peak - roiling dark clouds, bamboo towering impossibly far over his head, brown leaves thick on the ground and a thunderous gong ringing from somewhere down the path.
A coliseum.
Screams ring out, metal clashes, beasts roar.
And standing in front of the metal grill gate, tall and bedazzled in riches and more unmarked than shen yuan has ever seen him, is shen qingqiu.
-
What is persona if not themes of the inner self and fighting literal inner demons and learning to love, both yourself and others, and overcoming tragedy?
There are some things I'm still unsure of, but I really want to explore the idea of the ghost of sj lingering on, still haunting the narrative and how that affects everyone. Normally, when a palace ruler is killed, their palace crumbles as well, but with Sqq still walking around and the systems intervention with his soul (having not died then in canon) the original goods wouldn't be fully gone.
The soul is! It's not sjs ghost, but rather his shadow. Real souls cannot live in the meta verse. But with the real deal gone, sy would be unable to affect him in order to make his way through the palace to the treasure the way a normal heist would go. Instead, he'd have to learn about sj himself, uncovering secrets and dispelling rumours. As the new Sqq, he would have to change his perspective and uncover the story behind the scum villain in order to progress. Remove the distorted perspective from himself.
Mini bosses would be a bad faith interpretation of yqy from sjs perspective, qiu haitang as she was at the manor. Enemies would be the coliseum guards and jailers, the shadow populace qj disciples in general misery, often forced to fight each other or monsters as sj watches on from the top seat. Nyy would sit with him. Poor shadow lbh would be a prime gladiator slave, suffering constant defeat. Sin: envy. I really want to focus on the fact he is both abuser and survivor, and his 'I suffered, thus so should you' thing. A bit like p5 strikers in that.
The plot would be basically Sqq handling both the canon events of svsss and also his investigation into sj, tracing paper trails of slave documents, hunting for potential secrets in the bamboo house, learning about the ghost backstab incident from lqg (which leads him to airplane), building up the courage to go down and talk to the brothel ladies, carefully teasing bits of history out of yqy. Also beating up shadows with a jojo stand and a .7 calibre sniper rifle he can fire like an automatic in his spare time. (if you don't know, persona lets you hold shadows at gunpoint for cash and items, but also flirt, threaten and bribe. Also you can ambush them and sometimes collect them like pokemon it's fun.)
The final battle would have the palace ruler sj transform into his final form (I'm thinking something with chains) but there absolutely has to be a human duel for the first phase, xiu ya to xiu ya. The surrendering of the crown would end in a hug, and sj performing a sincere but bastardised version of the peak lord crowning ceremony before he dissipates, and the coliseum starting to crumble and burn. As for the treasure... In the distorted world, an elaborate peak lord ceremonial crown, in the real world, an old, worn hair ribbon.
If I wrote it, I'd probably keep it shorter. Just the one palace, maybe sqh awakens his persona by virtue of being squirrelly and getting on his last nerve™. I'm thinking of the 'what don't I dare when it comes to you?!' because if that isn't a persona awakening scene I don't know what is. Conquering the bamboo palace would free qj from some 'unnamable' dark cloud and just in time to push lbh in the abyss (the palace time limit bring that sjs spirit would cruelly push lbh into the abyss rather than sy doing it (and being kinder about it)).
If it was longer, more persona users would awaken, despite sqq's best attempts. Liu qingge, ning yingying, shang qinghua obviously, gongyi xiao, zhuzhi lang maybe (they'd both live). A real motley crew. There'd be more palaces along the journey, each with it's own deadline - old palace master, lbh (though his palace would have the gimmick of being actually xin mo's), tianlang Jun, qiu haitang. Sj would still be the overarching palace, this time being the only one without a deadline maybe, and the story would end with a 'not sj' reveal for the new phantom thieves (with a side order of 'we already know and care for you anyway').
A sequel would be shorter: sy visits qiong ding for the first time since its all calmed down and realises that the distortions of a palace are still there, that they weren't a product of the bamboo palace. Yqy has a palace (because you can't tell me that man is mentally well). For a side of angst maybe the sy reveal was more open secret for the need to knows rather than strictly 'whoever witnessed two identical versions of Sqq trying to kill each other' and Yqy develops the palace as a result of not taking that well.
In comparison to the others, Yqy is the strongest cultivator alive, has been sitting on a soul deep distortion and trauma for decades since childhood, recently went through a heartbreaking reveal pointed directly at every single one of those issues, and oh yeah, has his soul directly bound to xuan su.
His palace's difficulty level is nightmarish. The corrupt version of the lingxi caves is a terrifying subterranean crawl through blood soaked caverns and bottomless pits. The gimmick is that near everything wants to suck your soul out. The only saving grace is that distortions are not inherently malicious, and they manage to lever that to their advantage. Unlike the others, yqys palace does not focus on him abusing his power over others - quite the opposite, in fact.
Through murals, echoing voices, and what sy and sqh remember, they piece together his own heart demons. It's scary - outwardly, the sect leader is fine, clear headed, going about his days just fine. The bloodied caverns he sees the world through tell a different story. To gain access it's a long process of easing out stories, working through his deeply ingrained self reliance, helping him work up to confessing the truth of xuan su. Not only to xiao jius shrine, but to his closest martial siblings as well, allowing him to be vulnerable and protected as he never has been.
But Yqy follows them into the palace, curious as to why they visit his peak every day. It's unstable, very dangerous for a person to meet their shadow, but it's too late. Yqy meets his shadow self, small and furious and stuck through with a thousand swords he uses to his advantage, and does the impossible.
A palace ruler awakens a persona.
Even as a trained group, the life force powered xuan su boosted shadow is too strong - they've already failed to defeat it once. Yue qingyuan, breathing grief like air but finally ready to heal, stands for himself. Rips off the smiling mask he's been hiding behind since he was five years old and freshly a big brother. His persona is magnificent.
And just in time, too, because, uh, turns out the meta verse is the systems doing, this time. And it's evil. I'm thinking a giant brainwashing vr-esque super computer. And they defeat it with the power of friendship and also lucifer.

Werebelushi:
This is a remake of the incomplete mini-rant I did about anime transformation stories and the writers that make them, I realize now that I was being kind of transphobic and it was my fault that it happened but the thing is the rant was incomplete and nobody was supposed to see it, I did not deserve however to be accused of being a coward. I don't see how using an OC to express yourself is cowardly, and also yeah don't make comments about Nathan's work supposedly being awful if you haven't read even them it's like me saying I hate historical dramas even though I haven't seen that many. Here's the thing, people express themselves with their OCs on here all the time, how is what any different than someone commissioning someone else to do an art piece of their OC transforming into say a statue, a two-headed gorilla/ogre hybrid, or even into Wolverine or Donkey Kong? Fans play as characters all the time when they roleplay, this is not roleplay to me, it's a job. Sometimes I have to talk about bad things and sometimes I wish I didn't have to but I have to, that's my job.
I am a fictional character in your real life universe but very much real in my own, allow me to explain that to you in the simplest of terms, I am meta. And that is my thing. Here is the thing I am not against people who identify as any gender or species, I just want a character transformation story of someone into a character that is wholesome, not fetishistic, not needlessly cruel, not creepy, no MC, just a character TF (doesn't even have to be a popular one, can be as obscure as you want) where the person keeps their mind and personality and that is all I want. Here is the thing, I used to be against anime character transformations because I was not well versed in anime, up until recently I had only been familiar with the basic staples of it like Sailor Moon, Digimon, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Monster Rancher, Escaflowne, Akira, etc, but I got into Soul Eater, Attack on Titan and JoJo later on and discovered these shows are actually kind of cool.
I was giving these shows a hard time and not giving them a chance because of the fics written about them, I have nothing against transformations into a character the person likes, it's just things like MC really take away my enjoyment and make me sad. Even if it's human to animal, MC just makes me sad. I am sorry if my words in the previous version of the 'Anime/character tf writers' rant caused me to come across as transphobic, you were not meant to see that.
This is the real version you are reading right now and how I really feel about the whole ordeal.

Haha, looks like it's time for me to explain the Annie-Barbara thing!
This is a long and super hilarious story, that involves Salty writing a brilliant fic (linked at the end of the post), so strap in for the ride XD
(Annie being @udaberriwrites, Barbara being me, as you can see lol)
The tl;dr is that it's Salty's (@tsunderewatermelon) fault for creating the name and mine for using it so much that everyone adopted it.
Thanks to us, many are shocked to learn that Annie isn't her real name! Nor is it one of her two usernames - Alhaira and Udaberri)
[Tagging the chaos family and those who asked me about the "Annie" thing - @tsunderewatermelon @kayedium-writes @axolotlsupremacyowo @hylianjo @alpaca-clouds @precambrian-sea-pancake @danceswithdarkspawn @lena-hills @mrsmungus @sliebman10 @oceangirl24... and the main star, @udaberriwrites]
So... a few months ago on the server, when we were really learning about how chaotic we were, we created 'The Chaos Family'. It started with Salty and Momo as the chaotic twins, then JoJo as their mother and Kay their dad. Then I ended up as JoJo's sibling along with Pearl (who isn't on Tumblr)... and somehow, Alhaira became my drinking buddy/friend because, of course, we were deep in DMs. Shoutout to Lena, for being the master lurker that she is, the entire time XD
Of course, since then, the family exploded to include so many others, but this story is very specific to the six of us, since it was still a new thing at the time. Heck, the Europeans had *no idea*... except for Annie, since... as you guessed, we regularly ramble chat in the DMs.
Anyways... we were doing the usual - causing and/or suffering through chaos. I don't remember how, but at some point, we decided that creating our own meta 'Chaos Family' verse was a genius idea... and Salty, the genius he is, went and actually wrote a fic for the verse. Or should I say that the rest of us cheered him into it? And it fit perfectly with the January server prompt - 'watching paint dry'!
Well, 'Letting it Sit' is amazing and hilarious. Y'all should check it out! (the fic is linked at the end of the post - I totally recommend it XD).
Of course, we all had to take on pseudonyms, so... Salty went and did that. Salty became Jalty, Momo became Yoyo, JoJo became SoSo, Kay became Fray, and Pearl became Opal.
I... was given an interesting distinction.
Since I'm often found with Salty and Momo... he gave me the name Bazuka. Rhymed with Mizuka and a pun with Bazooka. But obviously, I had to have a real name. He thought it'd be hilarious if my name was something completely unlike me, and settled on Barbara.
At this point, everyone knew about me and Alhaira regularly DMing, so Salty was like "haha, she's your drinking buddy and 100% has to be in the fic" and decided she needed a name. But of course, the rest of us had names. He gave her... I'll just quote the fic here. It's wild!
After she finished her explanation Bazuka suddenly spoke up with a hiss, “Oooh, hey sorry, we have to get going!” “Aww, where are you going?” Yoyo asked in an uncharacteristically small voice. “I have to meet up with my friend in a bit and Opal is my ride! Promise I’ll see you guys later on though, so don’t worry about that!” The two aunts exchanged quick hugs and handshakes with the other family members before making their way out the door, Jalty calling after them, “Have fun with the Annihairlator!” A small chuckle of recognition came from Bazuka as she replied, “We will! I’ll make sure to tell her all about your guys’ antics tonight!”
...yes, you read that right.
Salty, the madman he is, chose Annihairlator to match my own Bazuka! But of course, that nickname was too long and wordy, so it shortened to... you guessed it. Annie. That's how the name happened!
(also, this is why my Discord name is "Mizuka the Vamp-zooka" XD)
Or rather... that's how the name originated. It would've stayed within this silly little verse alongside the other names... except, of course, I found it hilarious and blabbed rambled told Alhaira all about it and not only was she amused, she was a bit salty that she was missing out, since this was going down while she was asleep.
One thing led to another (me rambling about chaos shenanigans) and I was constantly calling her Annie in the DMs... which in turn spilled into the main chat, where I was still calling her Annie all the time.
Then everyone somehow picked up on it, because apparently, I'm the perpetual enabler and trend-spreader. Somehow, a lot of stuff I say (including fic ideas) just somehow... permeate through our circle.
And here we are. Annie = Alhaira = Udaberri because Salty's a hilariously creative writer and I'm a rambly trend-setting enabler.
That's it! If you read this whole thing... go read Salty's fic! I love it!
Mizu, Mizuka, Bazuka, Barbara
Pfft, I'm still so amused that somehow, the name Barbara landed on me after the whole meta-fic deal! I love that contrast, ngl XD
But yeah - the other three are ones I expected from the get-go~

Since characters from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure mention famous works ranging from Tom & Jerry to The Sixth Sense and the characters themselves have favorite real-life celebrities, films, songs, etc. revealed in their manga profiles (like Jotaro's favorite movie being Never Cry Wolf, Josuke being a fan of Prince, Bruno liking Miles Davis' albums Bitches' Brew and Agharta, Giorno's favorite novel being Les Misérables, etc.), I imagine how hilarious it would be meta-wise if Hirohiko Araki were to exist in the JoJo universe as a real person except his popular ongoing manga (which is obviously a JJBA stand-in) is titled MoMo's Madcap Misadventures, which nearly mirrors the events of the JoJo-verse with some minor alterations thrown in the fictional series because JoJo!Araki is basing the MoMo stories off of in-universe incidents he's researching about (like the 1989 rampage in Cairo in Stardust Crusaders and the string of supposed "disappearances" within Morioh in Diamond is Unbreakable; Araki even researched things like Hamon and Stands), and the series (within a series) has eight parts so far around the time the universal reset via Made in Heaven happened; Ectoplasm Ichor, Combat Proclivity, Sunlight Champions, Gemstones Are Indestructable, Aureo Luccicante (translating as "Glittering Gold" in Italian), Gravestone Lake, Iron Ball Race, and MoMoLion.
I can imagine that Araki being Rohan Kishibe's idol and inspiration to become a mangaka himself.

choi joshua - 26 años – 28/05/1994 – geminis – modelo  – fc: kim namjoon (rm) (alternativo: seo john (johnny))

A hand was rubbing under her chin, looking above his head while she was thinking of his words. It almost would've looked like she was spacing out before an index finger started tapping the surface of her lips before squishing them briefly - and out popped a tongue in response before words and it vanished.
"Perhaps I already did... Usually when people say that though, they want to hear it. How much begging are we talking about here? How much begging for a Blood Sin?" She snorted, her eye darting to look at him. It was a legitimate question. "Or we talking something else?"

2. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
It's been a long while, since, surprise, surprise, this winter/spring has been really hard on my health and I have burned myself the Fuck out, but i'm finally at a point where I can work on the Demon AU again (and specifically on finishing Perched Over Nothingness at that) and it's gonna be a bit more until i can actually show something for it too, but I'm so excited to get back into it. I love this AU a lot and despite what it probably looks like, I never had any plans of abandoning it
(You specifically know how much worldbuilding has gone into that AU and i'm so excited to show even a fraction of it in my works someday)
6. What character do you have the most fun writing?
Honestly?? Marvin
Like out of the current front and centre repertoire of jojo bullshit it's probably Caesar bc he lets me live out a lot of emotional whatevers while also v easily winding up neck-deep in random goofy bullshit bc Suzi confiscated his braincell when they were like 17 and he tried to pickpocket a new one off of Joseph which obviously didn't work
But overall (main verse) Marvin still has an even greater potential of anything i wanna plop onto him and he's an absolute bastard and his dynamic with p much everyone from the group makes him so incredibly fun to do stuff with
14. At what point in writing do you come up with a title?
It's either sometime during or even Before the roughest first draft, or after I'm done with writing the whole thing. It's either a miraculous spark of inspiration that comes to me early or the wall that stands between me and the publish button on ao3 once i'm done with everything else bc titles are fuckin Hard
(most of my titles are the latter. Heirs To Nothing was an early miracle, but that's really more on the rare side)

The Most Popular Anime in 2020…According to Wikipedia
How can you tell what anime is actually popular? Your Twitter feed is a bubble, curated by people you’ve chosen to show up. Most anime fans don’t use a service like MyAnimeList or AniChart to broadcast what they’re watching, nor are those who do necessarily representative of the broader community. Crunchyroll may be the largest anime service for most of the world, but its own “Popular” ranking doesn’t capture any viewership from anime licensed or watched elsewhere.
However, our curiosity is more honest — and, potentially, more representative. You can fake interest on a survey or a Discord channel, but if you’ve landed on a Wikipedia page, there must be a certain sincerity to your action. Like a Google search for symptoms or snooping on an ex’s Facebook, when people query Wikipedia, they’re doing it in a semi-private sphere. Today, we’ll be using that candor to count down the most popular anime of 2020 so far…based on page views on the English version of Wikipedia, the web’s 11th most popular website.
Using Wikipedia’s internal tools, your reliable author examined and compared viewership between all 9,848 pages within the website’s “Anime” category, year-to-date as of February 19th. Below, you’ll find the top 10 most-read pages related to anime on Wikipedia by this standard, regardless of how sensical the results may have been. Let’s jump in!
Yusuke Murata (One-Punch Man, Eyeshield 21) Illustrated the cover for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's Japanese Home Video Release
  10. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
The 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a sensation, and was inspired by anime as well as coming full-circle to serve as an inspiration to creators in the medium as well. Yoshiyuki Tomino called Spider-Verse “a really weird anime” during a 2019 lecture, but just because the creator of Gundam says so, is this really an anime? A quick “CTRL + F” of the Spider-Verse page indicates that the film was grouped within the category on Wikipedia due to it being included as one of 199 entries listed as an "Anime-influenced Western animation”. So Spider-Verse isn’t really an anime, but since Wikipedia classifies it as such (and so would many of your favorite creators), we're not going to editorialize this list. Its inclusion speaks to the growing bridge between animators in Japan and overseas, as well as the high level of excitement for the film and anticipation of its sequel planned for 2022, and I for one am thankful this is the one true non-anime page that made the top 10, particularly compared to other contenders like 4chan (Rank 18).
Promotional art for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
  9. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
Our next entry is much more closely aligned with anime, but rather than being an anime series or film itself, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a new video game based on the Dragon Ball manga franchise for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC released just last month. Of the 262 pages directly associated with Dragon Ball on Wikipedia, it makes sense that fans in 2020 would flock to this more than the rest, since Kakarot is the only new adventure of Goku and friends released this year. The parent page of the franchise “Dragon Ball”  is the next most-read page on the list at rank 22, with approximately 4,150 readers every day. Dragon Ball Z and the most recent TV anime, Dragon Ball Super, follow shortly behind.
What’s most impressive to me about Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s spot on this list of Wikipedia’s most popular anime-related pages is not how high it is, but rather, how low in the ranking it’s found. Kakarot was the best-selling video game in the United States for the month of January, and the US makes up more of the English-language traffic for Wikipedia than any other country. Yet, the Kakarot game only gets half the traffic on the platform as the most recent Call of Duty game, which is several months past its peak Wikipedia interest and isn’t moving as many copies in stores. This disparity speaks to the varied reasons one would go to Wikipedia to learn more about a game, but it also may represent the relative staying power of Goku’s latest console outing.
Momoka, the mascot of FAKKU (NSFW), the largest English-language platform for hentai
  8. Hentai (Warning: This link includes NSFW content)
Hentai, which Wikipedia encourages us not to be confuse with Hentaigana, is defined by the platform as “anime and manga pornography” - at least when the term is used outside of Japan. While not all fans of anime are also compelled by anime pornography, certainly, judging by Wikipedia traffic and Google search data, many are. That said, with a Google search, one would expect most of the queries would be made with the intent to consume hentai content. On the Wikipedia platform, that may not be the case - whether it’s a confused parent or friend, investigating an encyclopedic page for hentai may feel like the safer way to understand the topic.
Hentai Page Monthly Traffic on Wikipedia
Interestingly, 2019 was the weakest year on record for the Hentai page of Wikipedia - had it continued at its rate from last year, the topic would barely miss a top 15 list of anime pages. But in 2020, there seems to be a resurgence, though with no particular inflection point your author could discover, no major article about the topic that would inspire further curiosity from those not “in the know”. It’s worth noting that popular hentai related terms did not show similar dips in 2019 on Wikipedia, and the largest English-language hentai distributor, Fakku, saw its best year on the platform to date.
A comparison of international search traffic for the topics “Anime” and “Hentai” via Google Trends
However, in investigating this strange downturn, I re-discovered something else that I’ve always considered a novelty of data. “Anime” and “Hentai”, as topics, are incredibly strongly correlated on Google search. When one goes up on search, the other follows - and likewise for downturns in traffic. There’s a meaningful exception at the end of 2015, when hentai and its related terms saw a huge drop-off, but that may be more related to Google’s update to the Trends data collection method. That said, it’s hard to argue that anime has outpaced hentai these last five years, and that hentai’s downturn can be found both on Wikipedia and Google. While I don’t believe there’s any less interest in the subject than before, as anime becomes more accessible to broader audiences, and more people are on the internet in general, I would imagine a slightly smaller proportion of those who love anime are also interested in the style applied to pornography now as compared to 10 years ago…but that’s a topic for another day.
Giorno Giovanna and his stand, Golden Wind from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
  7. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Finally, taking the number seven slot on our list is the first actual anime series, and it’s a good one: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. My instinct would be to assume that the meme of “watch jojos” has led many a curious Wikipedia users to this page. While technically this page is the parent page for the manga (and the franchise at large) and not any particular part, the growth in the franchise over the last few years has exploded overseas.
Starting with the anime adaptation of Part 4, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has transcended from one of the most meme’d anime to one of the most watched. From this author’s perspective, Part 4 represented a critical mass in the English-speaking JoJo’s fandom, where it became just the right size that the unengaged finally relented to watch this crazy anime that had been recommended to them with the intensity of a road roller for years before. Part 5 only ramped up this effect, a much more accessible story for those unfamiliar with the years of mythos that led up to Giorno Giovanna’s adventure in Italy.
There’s no particular cause for JoJo’s high readership on Wikipedia so far this year — no announcement of a Part 6 (sadly), no major shakeups in the manga, no more memes than usual — JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has simply become an unstoppable force in the world of anime, and that’s a good thing by my judgement. The best thing I could ask for, even. Please, watch JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure on Crunchyroll.
      Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro
  6. Studio Ghibli
After our first actual anime series of the list, we return to another more meta-relevant anime page with Studio Ghibli, undoubtedly the most famous production house in the industry. Started by Hayao Miyazaki and the late Isao Takahata and famous for films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, Ghibli has won at the Oscars, won our hearts, and given Miyazaki endless excuses to never actually retire.
In January, the Studio Ghibli page reached a 4-year high for monthly Wikipedia pageviews due to the announcement that the 21 films previously announced as part of HBO Max’s service at launch in May would also be included on Netflix outside of the United States, Canada, and Japan. According to Comparitech data on subscribers from December 2019, that would mean that even with their top country out of the running, approximately 55% of the service’s subscribers would have access to these beloved films.
The top-performing Ghibli works when it comes to Wikipedia traffic are Spirited Away (rank #18), My Neighbor Totoro (#29), Grave of the Fireflies (#67). Not surprisingly, these are also 3 of the top 5 most-watched films from the studio according to imDB, with Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle ahead of Grave of the Fireflies in the list.
    Various Characters from Interspecies Reviewers
  5. Interspecies Reviewers
Interspecies Reviewers is an anime about a human named Stunk and his friends as they explore the world of prostitution via a series of brothels run by succubi of various fantasy races and species. The series, from its premise, sounds like it has more than enough potential to cross some lines in regards to what is allowed on television…and according to multiple Japanese TV stations and streaming services, that’s exactly what happened.
On January 31st, Funimation was the first licensee to stop broadcasting Reviewers, stating, “After careful consideration, we determined that this series falls outside of our standards.” Amazon, Wakanim, Tokyo MX, and SUN soon followed suite.
The reaction within the anime community was…vibrant. The news spread quickly— there’s not much better way to draw awarenesses to something than to tell people that they can’t have it. While some fans made the anime a rallying cry for various causes, the interest faded quickly after the engagement on various YouTube videos started to flag. In fact, it’s worth noting that Interspecies Reviewers is not particularly popular on any major pirate site that lists viewership, falling far outside the season’s top 10 on each of the sites sampled by this author. Had this article been written about January traffic alone, Interspecies Reviewers would’ve topped the list, but at the rate Wikipedians are trafficking the page now, it won’t stay in the top 10 for much longer.
  Makoto Shinkai's Weathering with You
  4. Weathering with You
Next on our list is the film Weathering with You. Makoto Shinkai’s visually stunning follow-up to your name. came in #2 last year at the Japanese box office and has since surpassed Aladdin to become the country’s top earner of a film released in 2019. Being able to wrestle anime theatrical dominance from Detective Conan in its native country isn’t enough to get this film onto the top 5 of an English-language Wikipedia-based anime list, though: Weathering with You has been opening in theaters around the world, with its impressive US release on January 15th.
With $7,710,749 in US box office as of writing, Weathering with You is one of the top-earning anime films in the country in history at #11 not adjusting for inflation, just behind Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and Digimon: The Movie. Going by the average movie ticket price in North America as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, that means about 846,000 people have gone to see the film in the United States - nearly twice the amount of people who looked it up on Wikipedia.
Thanks to an excellent marketing campaign from the people at G-KIDS and a 90% “Certified Fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes, the hype for Weathering with You was real enough for its Wikipedia page to interest more folks browsing Wikipedia than even a controversy surrounding a fantasy race prostitution rating anime.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Wins the Crunchyroll Anime Awards (via Crunchyroll Germany)
  3. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Say “Hello!” to the 2020 Anime Awards winner for Anime of the Year, Best Boy, Best Fight Scene, it’s Demon Slayer! Demon Slayer became one of the most popular franchises in the world of anime and manga in the last year, with its manga breaking sales records, its opening song still topping Billboard Japan, and its unbelievable fan power around the world.
It’s been nearly five months since the TV series for Demon Slayer ended, but the excitement around the exploits of Tanjiro, Nezuko, and their friends has not slowed down. With an upcoming movie coming soon, it would be surprising to see this franchise lose steam any time soon.
    My Hero Academia
  2. My Hero Academia
There’s not much to be said about My Hero Academia here; since its second season, the show’s popularity has skyrocketed all around the world, and has only started to slow down recently now that nearly every anime fan out there has given the Weekly Shonen Jump standout a chance. Whether it’s topping Toonami’s viewership numbers or ramping up for its next international theatrical release, it’s hard to imagine My Hero Academia any lower on this list while new episodes are coming out every week!
  Alita: Battle Angel Promotional Image
  1. Alita: Battle Angel
Last year, audiences around the world were treated to the biggest Hollywood adaptation of a manga to date - Yukito Kishiro’s Gunnm was released as Alita: Battle Angel, a passion project of James Cameron’s that came to life under the leadership of director and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fan Robert Rodriguez. Now, in 2020, the film’s Wikipedia page tops the list of anime-related pages for a second year in a row — thanks to diehard fans.
If you looked at the rankings in January, Alita would still make the top 10, but just barely. However, an online group known as the #AlitaArmy started a kickstarter late last year to get enough funds to fly a plane over the Oscars requesting a sequel to the 2019 film. The quote for the banner was originally $1,810 USD, and all further funds raised were set to go to Open Bionics, a prosthetics company that worked with Fox to help create the look and feel of those featured in the Alita movie with a mission to “make beautiful bionic limbs more accessible.” The #AlitaArmy ended up raising $15,599 as of February 20th, and is in the process of passing along the excess funds to Open Bionics.
The #AlitaArmy Plane Petitioning for an #AlitaSequel at the 2020 Academy Awards
The airplane’s message was heard loud and clear: outlets from Indiewire to IGN covered the story, and staff and cast alike shared their excitement about the stunt with fans on social media.

A post shared by Rosa Salazar (@rosasalazar) onFeb 13, 2020 at 9:17am PST
Rosa Salazar, who plays the titular Alita in the film, celebrates the fandom on her Instagram.
It’s incredible to see that a fan campaign was able to both bring such attention to this franchise with a single stunt that Wikipedia traffic for the page even exceeds that of the top airing simulcasts, but if that doesn’t speak to the power of fandom, I’m not sure what does! Alita: Battle Angel was recently added to HBO, HBO Now, and HBO Go, so if you haven’t had a chance yet to see the biggest thing in anime (at least according to Wikipedia), give it a shot! Your author was enthralled by the movie as well, and here’s hoping to an #AlitaSequel!
And that’s our list! I hope you all enjoyed diving into Wikipedia’s analytics to help better understand part of the larger interest around anime. While including all pages, regardless of whether they’re actually a show, studio, genre, or not really anime at all may not have told the specific story you were looking for, I’ve also gone through the effort to collect the top 10 currently-airing anime by Wikipedia pageviews. Enjoy!
   1. My Hero Academia (466,536)
 2. Interspecies Reviewers (428,338)
 3. Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun (213,930)

Bucky + Employment/Career Aspirations
This applies only to Bucky’s canon/canon-ish verses only. Other verses vary.
Pre-TFA through WWII:
In Bucky’s house growing up, boxing was a big deal. Bucky and one of his younger brothers (JoJo) joined a boxing club in their early teens. By the time Bucky reached his adult height and weight, he was a heavyweight and good at the sport. He really wanted to turn boxing into his future career, but being the oldest son, he was expected to take over his dad’s civil engineering firm when he got older.
He had good enough grades to qualify for a scholarship (math was his best subject), so when it came time for college, he began studying to become and engineer and let his boxing dreams go. He wasn’t going to allow his father’s pressure to fall on the shoulders of one of his brothers.
After graduation, Bucky worked in his father’s firm and also joined the Army National Guard. Aside from the initial 24 weeks of training, Bucky would be able to stay in New York with Steve and simply run drills on the weekends to earn extra money, as long as there was no national emergency. He knew it was a possibility, but he never expected to be sent overseas. By the time he was sent into WWII, he had spent enough time in service to have earned the rank of Sergeant. (Thanks to this meta post for helping me clear up this part of my timeline, which was murky before lol.)
Post-TWS:
While on the run, Bucky first just crashed in abandoned buildings and stole what he needed until he grew to start trusting humanity enough interact. After that he took just about any job that would hire him. His language skills were an asset sometimes, but he inevitably lost most of them due to very poor social skills and/or PTSD episodes. He gained enough knowledge along the way to start working as a mechanic on his own, though, eventually repairing cars and motorcycles freelance.
In Wakanda, the locals taught him how to farm, and he helped with the crops and livestock. He didn’t actually earn currency, but his work was “payment” for the gift of being granted asylum in the country and given a home.
Post-Endgame, Bucky went back home to his hometown in Indiana after receiving a pardon for his crimes for fighting in the battles with Thanos. He began working with Sharon Carter as an Extractor, helping people wrapped up with Hydra get free from them and begin a new life.

@fumu replied to your post: Galaxia gijinka…………………
how would that work in a story standpoint. would they fight for meta knight. meta knight: galaxia, use sacred sword! like itd probably be just for fun but its funny to think about
GFDHLFKDHGSDFK yeah, actually my thought process is more that Galaxia isn’t the sword but rather a spirit inside the sword :O! so in gijinka-verse only the wielder would ever actually SEE Galaxia through like. visions. Garlude and Silica probably both saw Galaxia at some point too!
but if we’re going the silly route, might I suggest we do it the Jojo way:

EYE COLOR.       Very dark blue, reflects almost black or brown or sometimes purple. SKIN TONE.       Olive. BODY TYPE.      She’s a thin little thing, not particularly curvaeous by any means, small in the front but does squats for the back, regularly lifts weights and heavy items but prefers not to do so in such a manner that her muscles are always visible. ACCENT.       She’s got Nagoya dialect and it comes out when she’s speaking among her community, her clan, and her friends. But professionally, or on a job, or in public, she’s more Tokyo. Similarly, she speaks with Seoul’s dialect, tries to make sure her Korean is quite clear and distinct. Because she’s got a higher-pitched voice, her voice does sound a little odd in English, possesses a lot more enthusiasm than some of her peers, but she’s got most of the vocal tics out. VOICE.     Naturally light and lilting, extremely playful sounding, especially when she’s toying with someone or flirting. Drags out her vowels sounds or the ends of words and subject particles, for example. When her voice drops a register, it’s a warning sign. DOMINANT HAND.     Born left handed, which helps her with music, and she uses it in private for things like grooming, etc. In public, she switches to the right hand. Is ambidexterous as a result of it. POSTURE.      Has quite decent posture naturally, back and next straight when sitting. She has a habit of rolling her eyes at some of her companions more relaxed positions.  SCARS.      A burn scar on the back of her neck.  TATTOOS.     A crescent moon behind the right ear. Waves on the inside of her left bicep, easily coverable by a hand. A lotus tattoo with a trail leading down her spine, and also to her burn. Her next project is a dragon to represent the Leviathan, on her right side, starting from the ribcage and ending on her upper thigh to be easily obscured by her skirts without the use of tights. She’s interested in adding roses for her last piece, but hasn’t decided if they should be on the other thigh or below her breasts. BIRTHMARKS.     Nope. MOST NOTICEABLE FEATURE(S).    Her clothing / makeup choices & overall appearance is pretty noticeable, to say the least.
𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 !

PARENTS.     Mother died very early in her life, father is an important figurehead ( head of yakuza clan, government official, lord of Wutai.. take your pick ). PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT.      I already have a meta about this.~ She’s still involved with her dad & does work for him, second-in-command typically in the power structure & is prepared to take over when he deems ready.
𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 !
OCCUPATION.    Gang-star ( JoJo ruined enhanced the term for me, sorry not sorry ), artist, occasionally a part time student, sometimes an exorcist or divinator ( wanna be connected with ur dead folks? give her a call ). CURRENT RESIDENCE.     Nagoya, but she spends an awful amount of time in Tokyo... CLOSE FRIENDS.       If you’re one, you probs know! RELATIONSHIP STATUS.     Single. FINANCIAL STATUS.      High class / royalty. DRIVER’S LICENSE.   Motorcycle license, only rarely drives cars but honestly prefers not to. She can ride horses, prefers them wild. CRIMINAL RECORD.     It’d look pretty bad if it stuck, huh officer? Nah, she always finds a way out of trouble. VICES.     She’s quite balanced, all things considered.
𝐬𝐞𝐱 & 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 !
SEXUAL ORIENTATION.      Pansexual. ROMANTIC ORIENTATION.     Panromantic. PREFERRED EMOTIONAL ROLE.     Submissive  |  Dominant  |  Switch. PREFERRED SEXUAL ROLE.    Submissive  |  Dominant |  switch. LIBIDO.      Average, but indulges on it less than you’d think. She’s kind of got an empire to run, community to maintain, etc etc.  TURN ON’S.     Confidence, control, dirty talk, respect, gentle caresses, rough play, teasing, thrill, slight exhibitionism. TURN OFF’S.     Hates the unsanitary, doesn’t like it when she’s not prepared for something, detests obvious time limits, doesn’t like to be marked, but enjoys marking. LOVE LANGUAGE.     Quality time. RELATIONSHIP TENDENCIES.    Extremely devoted / trusting of her partner... which is serious, because her trust is not easily earned or given. Makes up for her lack of a normal life with gifts, acts of service. She admittedly isn’t good with nicknames.... but if you tell her what you want, she’ll get it for you. Or to you, depending on what the request is.
𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐬 !
CHARACTER’S THEME SONG.     Canonically it’s THIS and THIS and THIS. HOBBIES TO PASS TIME.       Sketching, painting, planting flowers, gardening.  MENTAL ILLNESSES.   PTSD, especially in canon-based verses which she’s a survivor of the Wutai War. PHYSICAL ILLNESSES.       N/A. PHOBIAS.  N/A. SELF CONFIDENCE LEVEL.      She’s actually quite confident in herself and her abilities, but  with a healthy sense of humility and understanding the need for constant self-improvement. Her serious failures, however, or when she sees a severe issue in her community, drives her to levels of weakness and intense sadness. VULNERABILITIES.     She’s extremely self-sacrificing for her community; they, ironically, are the ones who wound her the deepest by challenging her intentions, being suspicious of her, underminding and undervaluing her, and have in some cases threatened or imprisoned her wrongfully.

Hi Hi Hi. Here is a little blurb I wrote off the top of my head about all my friends on this year’s Group Picture Vol. 8. I love them all. I love their songs. And I love that we still keep up this stupid tradition; and somehow the comp keeps getting better and better. Thanks everyone! Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays :) - walt
Sour Guy - All Those Plans Were Wrong
Last summer Kris Schobert (Sour Guy, Walter Etc. / Mitty core member, Ernie…) was admitted to the hospital… and then again… and then again…. I think he spent like a month total in the hospital. It was not chill. But when he got out, the whole experience gave him a bit of clarity and new perspective on his life and the decisions he has made thus far. I won’t speak any further for him, but Kris… hey, nice song! And your quality home recording production and continuation of the WMAHMO slop sound doesn’t not go unnoticed! This song made me tear up in a coffee shop the first time I heard it.
Slaughter Beach, Dog - Big Band
Slaughter Beach, Dog are randomly GP staples by now but also one of my favorite bands and greatest friends. This song is a bit of a sound change for them, swapping mid tempo soft rock John K Sampson vibes for a theatrical late 60’s / 70’s sound that is a bit more light hearted than normal and I LOVE IT. It’s catchy, it makes me laugh, yet its so true. Glad to have these boys back this year.
Teal & Jer - Alphabet
Portland’s dreamiest duo Teal & Jer (Chain, Riled, Loose, lots of projects) bring a quirky alt edge to our otherwise bland and boring comp. Without them, we’d just be us. I personally would like to hear more Teal solo work??? Teal???
Milk Flud - Rodeo
If you don’t fuck with Milk Flud then you can get out.
Chase Hoyt - Health
Chase Hoyt (Ubu Roi, Feed, Chaz and the Minions of Chaz, The Rodeo…) is a GP fixture by now, and important asset to MNE because it’s his classic rock sensibilities that balance out the overload of folk / indie rock that we swim in. This song not only has a comically true message (health is the most important, i agree Chase) but the vibe, especially the chorus, has my head bobbing and me feeling like I’m on a grassy hillside at an outdoor concert in the 70’s, but also one glass of wine deep making homemade pizzas at an Air BNB with a girl I love, and that is a nice combo of feelings. “Let’s wrap it up / I’ve embarrassed us all enough”
Dry Goods - Learnt Nothing
You hear that flawless acoustic finger picking? That masculine story telling voice that sounds somewhere between a suburban Bob Dylan and a cowboy singing to the emptiness of the high desert? Yup, its Russell Park AKA Dry Goods and FKA Weston Bookhouse coming at us with another folk masterpiece, but this year adding in some new elements we aren’t quite used to- namely some cruisey guitar solos! Rumor has it Dry Goods is in the studio recording a new album right now and I would not be bummed out if this song were on it.
Byronius Punk - Beautiful Things
I just spent 3 weeks with Byronius Punk (Ian Farmer of Slaugher Beach, Dog / Modern Baseball) at his studio The Metal Shop in Philadelphia making a record with his beautiful mind and his new drum machine- so this song really hits home for me. I could write an essay on why this is the perfect Group Picture song- my three main points being - 1. It is a song about the act of creating. (“in everything that exists there lies a certain beauty / I want the world to know how much it all means to me”) which is exactly what Group Picture aims to celebrate. 2. It’s a song written and performed by someone who is usually more in the background of his bands (bassist / backup vox / recording engineer) but here has a platform to express his own individual style and skills, which is exactly what Group Picture wants to promote. 3. It has a Milk Flud name drop, which is a classic and classy GP / MNE move. Thank you Ian. You rule.
Dante Elephante - It Bothers Me
Dante Elephante are Santa Barbara legends and their new album “Rare Attractions” shows them evolving their sound into more loungey and ethereal territory. I am so glad they have joined GP this year, because I see singer / songwriter Ruben almost every weekend when he DJ’s at The Tavern in Ventura and I drunkenly annoy him / vaguely fan boy out on him. Dante being on Group Picture is a sign that our friendship extends beyond Saturday nights at the Tavern. Also their album vibes hard. Check out Rare Attractions on Spotify.
Peanut Butter Cups - Highest Quality
Petition for Aaron Kovacs (Peanut Butter cups, Lauren Records CEO, Winter Break and Summer Vacation drummer) to finally put out a full album? This catchy lo-fi pop rock is undeniably infectious. Fun fact: I’ve been hanging with this boy for almost 10 years and I’ve never heard him sing, but then he sends me these recordings and I’m like wtf your voice is so cool! If he makes a full album, MNE will put out the LP and still give him 100% of the digital income. That is how much I like Aaron’s style.
Anika Pyle - Young Love
I once wrote a song with the lyric “I’ll probably see her on tour but she won’t be on Group Picture this year.” I’m so glad I was wrong. Welcome to GP Anika Pyle! Anika (Katie Ellen, Chumped) plays raw emotional pop rock songs and this gem “Young Love” is just the tip of the iceberg. When her vocals max out at the end of the tune and you get a little bit of musical goosebumps, that is the feeling you get for a full 30 minutes of watching her play live. Anika, please come in and stay for a while!
Walter Etc. - This Would Only Happen to Me
Ok ok enough of the soft emotional bullshit. Here’s a song about someone coming to kill me! It’s 100% true. If you’re reading this, help!!!
Jake Lee - Good Run
Jake Lee (Bleeding Gums Murphy) strikes again with a lo-fi indie gem in which we hear Jake Lee reflect on his gaime from last year. Sounds like he made some interesting choices and is coming to terms with them? Or did I miss the mark, Jake? He is and always will be one of my favorite songwriters and his voice in this fuzz effect is not a bad look, I have to admit. The only way my life would be better is if Jake made a full album. Cheers homie.
Babytooth - State Quarters, OR
Technically, this is Babytooth’s official debut on Group Picture, but Portland, OR singer / songwriter Isabel Zacharias had a song on the comp last year that blew me away. It was her vocals and lyrics that hooked me then, and are still yanking me now. Now backed by a full band that gives dynamic range to her songs, it was still that first line “now you know you want a girl without a phone” that had me nodding “yup i love this”. Fingers crossed for Babytooth to become a GP staple.
Trashbike - Weasel
Trashbike is Bread (Blowout, Walter etc., Donkey Lips) and his homie Ru playing the pedals. He told me he wrote this song while stumbling home from the Bye and Bye. Bread is like a sexy emo prince, can’t you hear it? This song rules and I really hope Trashbike is more than just a one and done GP band. I would listen to a few albums of soft songs like this, wouldn’t you?
Banned From Japan - Vegan X
Welcome back to the Socal Valley punk rockers Banned From Japan! If you know that singer / songwriter Matthew Earle has been sober for a few years, this song is hilarious, simultaneously poking fun at vegan straight-edge and himself. The music rips and his vocals are catchy af. Fat Wrecks Chords come and sign Banned From Japan asap!
Walter X - Winter Shy
Ok. This is a bit meta. Walter X (Michael Mahaffie and his WMAHMO / Walter Etc. hardcore chip tune cover project) covers an old Walter GP song as his own GP song. Pretty niche MNE content! This song, in this Lifetime-esque style, his vocals so clear but so gruff, those guitar harmonies, the creative intro and chip-tuney bridge…. this literally gives me chills and is so much better than the original. I encourage anyone reading this to go check out his own original music under the name Jump Cut. It sounds just like this but with Michael’s own songs, shedding the limitations of the musical simpleton Walter songs.  Also, check out the full Walter X album on Spotify! What a talented dude…
Curling - Genkai Trip
Curling released their MNE album “Definitely Band” this year and the musical arrangements / song structures absolutely floored me. Genkai Trip is a song that got left off the album, but lives on through GP! Singer / guitarist Bernie Gelman noted “There's some pretty wacky guitar overdubs where Jojo and I each doubled some guitar parts while the other person was playing with the trem on the guitar, so you get this really weird detuning effect.” and yup that is Curling in a nutshell for you. Always excited to play around with gear and recording techniques that are way beyond my level.  I think this is an extremely underrated band and highly encourage the world to check out Definitely Band on spotify!
Ali Muhareb - DIY Hell
Ali? What the hell did you even make this song? It’s intriguing in the verses and then when the chorus busts out it sounds like if Dough Martsch were an up and coming artist in Portland in 2018. I actually had to text Ali to ask what these guitar sounds were and, if anyone is interested, he responded, “I compressed two guitars together through a virtual amp. And they’re both running through this sick pedal I got called the Data Corrupter.” For sure Ali! Thanks for a bad ass tune.
Dakota Loesch - Don’t Solve My Mysteries
I’ve been listening to a lot of Dakota’s music (solo, Animal City, Lemp Lungs) recently. I keep coming back to it, and its not a mystery. After hundreds of songs in his pocket, songs like “Don’t Solve My Mysteries” still sound musically and lyrically fresh, like Dakota has never had writer’s block in his life. When I listen to his music, I feel like it vicariously breaks down my own creative barriers. For instance when I first heard this song and he dropped the hook “just don’t solve all mysterious” I had that knee-jerk urge to ditch what I was doing and go write a poem or something. His will to create is just that contagious. Combine that with the Casio-keyboard bedroom drum machine vibe that I love so much about his songs like “The Basmati Rice” and you have a 10/10 GP banger.
Jerbear - Nowhere Girl
Jerbear is Jeremy Murphy (Teal & Jer, Riled, so many) and he is the king of a few things: weird bad guitar tones, asymmetrical organic song structures, rad lyrics that I never understand, and a voice that is universally loved. He stole my heart with Cranberries in the Cosmos on a previous GP, but I think Nowhere Girl takes the cake. Jer- when do we get the full solo album? Please don’t fall into the category of GP lost wonders. You’re not too shabby at this music thing!
Hemingway - Catch My Cool
Catch My Cool is a B-side from Hemingway’s You Will Never Be Happy.
I played drums in Hemingway at this time and I always vibed that Benny didn’t really like the way this song came out int he studio. I don’t get why? That vocal melody, soft sad and surfy guitar leads… it makes me wanna hold hands with a girl on Christmas Eve while walking down some bougie street looking at Christmas Lights. It sounds like a Starflyer 59 worship track and I love it for that. Benny, you made a mistake. This song should have made the album.
Alex Maddox - The Hypocrit’s Dilemma
I’ve heard Alex play this song when we get together to jam, and he always laughs it off as a Walter Mitty rip off song. But honestly, this is what I wish WMAHMO would write about if we made a folk punk record today. If you listen to this song knowing that Alex Maddox was a guy who quit his high paying job to travel Europe in his van, surfing and skating and working on farms, the lyrics to this song are way more wanna-be Walter Mitty. The song depicts a transformation in his paradigm and is completely raw, authentic, and sincere. Alex inspires me to chase a wholesome life that is designed for and by myself, rather than the obvious and sterile template that is provided for us, and this song exemplifies that 1000%.
Uncle Uncle - Nira (I’m Alive)
We played with Uncle Uncle last year in Santa Barbara and I honestly think we should have opened for them. They are actually a good band, both live and recorded. Stylish, friendly, and comically laid back- they might be the quintessential Santa Barbara band. A semi-new band, Uncle Uncle is gaining momentum quickly, and I won’t be surprised when the day comes that Kevin and Dom big time me on State st. Til then, I’m just glad I get to claim that they were on a Group Picture.
Humphrey Orlando - Set U Free
Ah, Humphrey. No, Humphrey accompanied by Toast. Two legends as old as MNE itself. What is there to say? I could listen to their wandering ballads til I fall into the Big Sleep, and still the melodies linger on…
