Joining the Companions

Now before I set off the join the companions I decided to set up the farm with crops. This obviously went along without a hitch and with the first harvest collected and combined into potions managed to level up our character twice. Once the farm was set up i set off to Whiterun. Before entering Jorrvaskr I sold some of the potions created and made a animal pack for Sweet Roll. Unfortunately I didn't realise that she can't equip an animal pack so I'm sorry that the poll regarding her will be unable to be fulfilled. After that discovery I quickly made my way to Jorrvaskr and talked to Kodlak to start the quest Take Up Arms. While he talked to Vilkas about my joining I managed to lock-pick two of the weapon displays and take the dwarven greatsword and elven warhammer. Once they finished talking Kodlak asked me about my battle skills to which I replied that I can handle myself. From there the quest went as normal. I sparred with Vilkas and took his sword up to Eorland, then returned Aela's shield to her before being taken by Farkas to my new quarters thus ending the quest Take Up Arms and joining the companions.

Had the cutest realization last night- so there's a saying we have in English meaning to get something done by any means necessary. It specifically includes dishonest methods, such as violence or lying. So when you're willing to resort to that kind of thing to achieve your goals, you say you're going to do something

Caught these on the second replay as Taash's commentary on one of the regrets and I think it's very demonstrative of why I adore Taash & think that people who believe that Taash is a "stereotypical comic relief with no depth" are a bit stupid.

Aside from this specific sentiment of "you waited too long to tell someone you care about something important and now you will never get to" being personally relevant to Taash, I think the whole scene is very telling of their character. Because Taash is the one to make a joking comment about Solas and Mythal "doing it" — and Taash is the one to deliver a profound reading of the regret. It's not even the case of deceitful appearances, Taash is just both direct and without a filter & wise in their own way. And I adore it about them.

Taash functionally does what Sera did, and if you cared enough about Sera to do her questline in DA:I you know she's got more depth to her than she lets out; same is true for Taash. I think a lot of people stumble over their direct/brash approach (that they themselves admit helps them because they don't always understand what people mean) and assume that Taash has no depth but Taash is genuinely my favorite companion because they challenge your ability to look past the surface and actually listen to what the character is saying, analyze them, consider them.

No big conclusion here but I genuinely feel like people hating/disregarding Taash-like characters are the reason less and less exposition is offered in meaningful ways and instead gets served like the player is a toddler. Because an alarming number of people cannot handle characters that challenge you to listen to them. Anyways I love Taash.

The worst thing is, Viconia would've fit perfectly in Shadowheart's storyline. From Viconia's (non-romanced) epilogue, we know this:

Viconia does found a cult of Shar in Waterdeep and she is betrayed by one of her followers. She is, not Shar. Shar, in fact, admonishes Viconia for this, showing she clearly never ordered that. And Viconia does not give a damn. This is the woman who left the cult of Lolth and went to the 'lighter' option that was Shar (compared to Lolth). She already deals with agents sent by Lolth, she's not going to let Shar tell her what to do.

The nature of the betrayal Viconia was the subject of is left entirely up to the player. With Viconia and Shadowheart's backstory being what they are, Shar's plot for a Selûnite child could've been perfectly inserted as the reason for Viconia's falling out with Shar.

Viconia left Lolth because of how children were treated, how she was treated herself. She did not turn to Shar to do the same thing. She would reject Shar's plot the moment the order came, and that would be the perfect trigger for one of her follower to turn of her. Shar's cult being what it is, I don't think taking down the whole lot is overkill to avoid further backstabbing. There aren't many who will pick their priestress over their goddess, especially not with how Sharran's faith emphasizes self-effacing. Can't make a decision for yourself when you don't think for yourself.

Shar's reprimends following what Viconia did further proves this wasn't what the goddess wanted. Complete that by adding she's incensed Viconia rejected her order and slaughtered her willing clerics, and you've got the perfect connection between Viconia and Shadowheart.

In BG 3, we could've met Viconia in Baldur's Gate, rather annoyed because she's been getting an influx of Sharran agents after her, and she's tracking the source to put an end to it. A Shar-aligned Shadowheart could've the mission to purge the cloister that failed to kill her, while a Selûne-aligned Shadowheart would work with her to put and end to the cloister, to give them both some peace and quiet.

Epilogue could've them both sharing tips on 'How to best kill an agent of faith sent after you'. They both have sharp tongues and a similar past, they could've had fantastic banter.

Instead we have this mess.

the assistant librarians' rooms are very dark, Binah discovers. fitting, perhaps, her floor is a tangle of branches and rivers, a perfect charred forest for birds to roam. but where her quarters have twinkling stars in the ceiling, your room has nothing of the sort apart from a small lamp. everything winks out into black when it's switched off, descending into a void. she asks, one day, quietly, if you can find your way in the dark. you simply blink at her. there are bruises on your legs from running into things, and a few on your head during particularly unlucky incidents.

no. you can't, really. but that's how life is sometimes, isn't it? Binah tilts her head and regards you quietly with a small, contemplative nod.

the next time she sees you, she gifts you a star. it's a small, delicate thing, glowing softly gold, and your Patron Librarian quietly slips it into your hands. "A nightlight for you." her voice is calm and steady. "To help you find your way." she reaches out and gently closes your fingers around the star. Binah's still heart warms when a delighted smile spreads across your face, and the star gleams brighter in turn. it's a beacon for you, for when you're frightened or trying to find your way. just as you were a beacon for her all those cycles ago.
