"Come one, come all, to the one and only, traveling Blossom carnival! We got it all here folks, from rides, to our exclusive double sized circus tent, petting zoos- Anything your heart desires!" Is what those old flyers used to speak of before this once marvel of entrainment got abandoned on the edge of Eastridge county all those years ago. A little pit stop turned to a permeant landmark, and no one has been able to afford the massive cost to move the 3 mile wide carnival.

And so, it becomes home to the oddest family you'll ever meet. Three veldiguns, a partnered pair Armaros (teal) and Fraudrin (red) and their little one, Reynard (Purple).

Won't you come visit this wonderful place of games and joy? They would loveee to meet you!

Oh dear lord… the Ninja Tribunal arch. So much to unpack. Give me strength…

I’m going to try and be fair, I’m going to mention something positive for every complaint I make. I don’t want to be that person after all.

Firstly, please, please, for the love of all things , STOP CALLING OUT ATTACKS LIKE A CHEAP 90S ANIME DUB!!! The original cringe. 😖

Ok, nice thing time. These four were very likable (if not superfluous). I found myself wanting to know more about them and even shipping some of them with the Hamato brothers, if not romantically then at least as besties. Sadly they spend the entire arch building up friendships between these humans and the Turtles only to kill them off in the end. But it feels SO forced. We weren’t given enough time with them to really cry over them as individuals so much as morn the wasted potential they were brimming with. I get they couldn’t kill off the Turtles and thus needed some “Red Shirts” to try and sell the high stakes, but still.

And what about the relatives they were threatened with in the first episode of the arch? Joi Reynard’s Aunt who lives in Japan (I’m assuming Army or Navy brat, she’s WAY too caucasian to even be half Japanese, I’m assuming French ancestry), and Adam McCay’s brother (who never gets a name) in Miami Florida? Faraji Ngala and Yoshida Tora aren’t given specific loved ones to fret over but Tora obviously has someone because he apologizes to Mikey “…our families are at stake.”

Did anyone notify those poor people that their relatives died?! Because they weren’t even mentioned after this.

Side note while we’re on the subject of the folks left behind back on the home front, I hope April or one of the other human Allie’s back in NY are taking care of Klunk. With the way the Hamato clan keeps getting kidnaped for long periods of time, the poor fluff ball could starve easily.

These four, ugh where to start?

Positive note, beautiful visual designs, if not a westerner’s usual hodgepodge of Asian fantasy stereotypes. 🙄😑

Weak backstory, contorting groundbreaking original canon for this series into a very boring and predictable bit of nonsense. Completely unnecessary and obviously half assed, to the point where the Turtles sum it up so succinctly you want to say to Splinter and The Ancient One “That’s how you tell a story!”

Oh and their attitudes sucked! Almost as bad as their communication skills. Thankfully, when he arrived, Splinter flat out called them out on their crap. “How can they prepare themselves if you do not tell them anything?!”

Probably should say something positive again… Um, their voice actors were great?😅 And I love the juxtaposition of the girl being the one to represent strength and having a huge man representing stealth.

The weapons. Positive observations, they’re real weapon types and are actually pretty cool looking. Also it’s nice to see the boys deviated from their comfort zones (not Leo unfortunately, the writers just can’t separate him from swords in their minds apparently). How Leo gets his is so infuriatingly complicated when it didn’t need to be and falls into the trope of “black guy dies first” (then the girl, then the sweetheart, then the cool dude. Did we take a wrong turn into a late 90s horror movie or something?).

The monsters. None of these creatures look like their Japanese inspiration AT ALL! And none of them are Tengu, Tengu doesn’t even mean “demon”! They just stuck Tengu on the end of every other Japanese Yokai name! For no good reason!

I kept hearing that line from Princess Bride in my head. “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

I’m not even Asian and I’m so offended and confused, I can’t imagine how an actual member of the Japanese culture must feel getting shit on like this. Whoever wrote this arch did not respect the source material, the source culture, or the audience because they obviously assumed we were all stupid unaware kids! Ether that, or they were seriously lazy, I suspect both.

And if you’re going to give an English speaking cast of white people Japanese words to say, TEACH THEM HOW TO £¥€&ING SAY THEM CORRECTLY! Jeezus Henry Christmas! (Best Herminone Granger voice) It’s “Oh-Knee” not “On-Eye”!

Bright side, they do look awesome.🤷🏻‍♀️

I reached out to my Ixies with a desperate, beseeching look, the look of a drowning elf going down for the last time. Why weren't they helping me?? Was it because Ash - I mean Dr. Cesawonki - had trained them? Had it been the plan all along to betray me at the final moment? It didn't matter at this point; it was too late … My Ixies couldn't save me from these Unseelie witches' clutches even if they tried! All of my strength was gone, drained away by their suffocating spell! With a final shudder, I surrendered to my fate. I went limp and closed my eyes for the last time. I hoped that I had lived my life well enough to be taken into Fuma's Embrace.

"Um, Sire," one of the Ixies murmured. "Are you all right? They're just hugging you."

My eyes snapped open.

"Oh," I said, observantly. I looked at Burnside and Rebecca. The joy on their faces was obvious. I suddenly felt very foolish. "Um… yeah… hello, Rebecca… and Burnside… It's nice to see you too."

After a few seconds, Rebecca let go and stepped back to look at me. Burnside, however, continued clutching me with an inexorable grip.

"Burnside," I said, poking her gently with my one free hand. "You can let go now."

"Nuh uh," she mumbled, shaking her head and snuggling up even tighter against me.

"Aww, that's cute," Rebecca chuckled. "She's afraid if she lets go, she might lose you for another really long time."

"She's just doing it for attention," I grumbled. If I ignored her, she would eventually give up on her own. I turned my attention to Rebecca. "So how've you been?"

"I knew you would find a way to escape!" Rebecca gushed excitedly. "I just knew it! I never gave up hope! As for me, I've been doing well since Burnside rescued me from Ash Marten's lessons. Lessons, hah! It was more like propaganda! He hardly taught me any magick. He was holding out in order to get me to convert to Unseelieness, but I held fast! I never forgot what you taught me, and I always remembered my vision of Fuma and Saint Reynard. The Seelie way is the only way! Speaking of which, I can't wait to hear how you escaped! I tried going back to Bunkirk once to preach the ways of Fuma, but no one was willing to listen. I was actually surprised they didn't form a mob and try to chase me out! I assume that was your doing. You're so much more Seelie than I am. Here it's been almost two hundred years and I still have a lot to learn! How did you manage to parlay with those crusty old religious conservatives and convince them to lift their embargo and let you go? Spare no details! Did you convince any of them to accept the light of Fuma too?"

She stopped her torrent of words, and I realized that now she was expecting me to say something. A deep pit formed in my stomach. What could I tell her about the doom that befell Bunkirk?

"Um, Rebecca," I started reluctantly. "You might want to sit down. I have some bad news…"

OC INTRODUCTION ➳ SWALLOW REYNARD

"You think you can outsmart me? Let's test that theory, sounds like fun."

A star of the Spelldrive team and an enjoyer of (what he thinks is) harmless chaos, Swallow considers himself a vigilante of Night Raven College. He proudly boasts about standing up for the poor and the bullied and seems to target the more well-off students with his antics, though some students speculate he does it more for the fun of it (and to pocket some money), than out of actual goodness of his heart.

PERSONALITY

The very definition of "chaotic lawful" - he seems to be concerned a great deal with justice and certainly has a strong moral code, yet no one is able to figure what exactly it is. Swallow himself would said it's pretty easy, actually. He wehemently hates people born into comfort and money or those who hold power over others, as he believes that everyone should be equal in standing.

He's usually pretty friendly and cheery, some say - overly so, as he doesn't seem to take anything seriously. Nobody ever knows what to expect from him; he's quite shifty, likes to cause a little bit of mischief and takes a great deal of joy in annoying the people that he thinks deserve it. He's confident (often overly so), flashy and loves attention. He treats everything he does like putting on a show.

He doesn't respect authority and doesn't really care about getting an education, thinking good grades won't help him in "real" life, which makes him a problem student even compared to the rest of Night Raven College. Despite his less than perfect grades though, he's very clever and witty, good at thinking quickly and resistant to stress.

RELATIONSHIPS

Riddle Rosehearts - unexpected to many (Riddle included), Swallow actually really respects Riddle and everytime they're together, he's on his best behavior. He often offers his help to Riddle, be it with organising the unbirthday parties or just making him tea. He also tends to flirt with Riddle a lot, not out of any actual interest, but just because he finds Riddle's reactions funny.

Leona Kingscholar - Swallow is Leona's personal nightmare. He considers Leona to be everything he hates (rich, royal, lazy) put into one human being and so he does everything in his power to make Leona's life worse. It's especially true during the Spelldrive matches; he takes every opportunity to make himself the star of the show, even when it puts them in danger of losing the actual game. The only reason why Leona haven't kicked him out yet is because Swallow is geniuenly a really good player.

Ruggie Bucchi - on the other hand, Swallow thinks Ruggie is pretty cool and sometimes helps him in his endeavors to earn more money. He also constantly tries to get Ruggie too ditch Leona.

Azul Ashengrotto - another one of Swallow's prime targets. He finds Azul's greediness and false benevolence to be downright disgusting. On the other hand Azul thinks that Swallow's beliefs in an "equal world" is nothing more than laughable. Swallow often visits the Mostro Lounge to be a pain in the ass, getting dragged into heated debates with Azul, since both of them feel the need to prove the other wrong.

Kalle Brunne (my OC) - as somebody whose life revolves mostly around being Azul's guard dog, Kalle considers Swallow to be one of the worst students at NRC. Everytime they see Swallow, their blood boils with anger. In turn, Swallow doesn't think much of Kalle, mostly considering them kind of pathetic for kissing Azul's boots.

Kalim Al-Asim - Swallow is nice to Kalim :). Why wouldn't he be? Look at how good of friends they are! And if Swallow uses Kalim's nicety to try and get money out of him - well. Kalim has too much of it anyways. Nobody should care.

Jamil Viper - similar to Kalle, Jamil's feelings towards Swallow are less than positive. He considers him not only a general nuisance, but also an actual threat to his job. He tries to get Swallow away from Kalim, while Swallow thinks that Jamil should just ditch Kalim completely and doesn't understand why he didn't do so already.

TRIVIA

his last name is a reference to Reynard the Fox, a character from medieval literature that was also partly an inspiration for the 1973 Robin Hood movie

he cuts his hair himself - he wears his hair in a ponytail mostly to hide the fact that he actually has the worst mullet known to man

Seven Years of TMB, Part 4: The Iridescent Rover and the Angelic Author

Trying to outsmart a god, let alone a life deity, at what is basically hide-and-seek with extra steps… is totally impossible. Still, I thought Aluros deserved a little treat for winning— a book about him, written by yours truly. Well… I was going to give it to him eventually, considering I’ve been working on it for a few years already.

As expected, I found him taking the Princesses out for a walk in the woods outside Alphica, happily singing an old song he transcribed for his scholar friends; Clementine trotting around his feet, Lorelei on his head, Domino floating next to him, and Minerva being carried around in his arms, sleeping.

To be honest, I didn’t expect that he’d be here in his god form and not some other guise like… Bengt the Bard or that blue goblin whose name I can’t quite recall. But again, with practically no one in Phantasmia knowing who he really is (other than me), I guess he has nothing to worry about as long as he’s here.

Still, I’m not letting him tag along with me to Mikel’s place unless he changes into his elf form. I’d rather have my partner call Aluros “Mr. Reynard” rather than try to wrap his head around the idea of an “entirely new” deity.

Whoops, I’m getting off topic here… Anyways, back to my story.

“Oh, Lukey! Nice to see you again. The girls have been wondering when you’d…”

Aluros and his familiars were quick to spot me, but quicker did their attention turn towards the purple rectangular object I held in my arms. It’s the God of Colors’ favorite hue, and every author before me who’s ever written about him made that very clear.

Before I could fully explain as to why I got him this present, a collaborative effort from the two older Princesses swiftly removed the book from my grasp, then into their maker’s.

“All About Aluros: The God of Colors… You wrote this for me?”

And so he gently sat himself down, laid sleepy little Minerva onto his lap, and began to go through the pages, each word and picture, as the other Princesses gathered around him. His grin, which started off small yet soft, grew wider with every detail that amused him.

I wasn’t expecting much of a reaction from Aluros since it’s not really an elaborate gift, but looking back at it now… I probably should have. Unlike the stone-faced goddess that is my mother, he’s always been an emotional deity, and this time too was he moved to tears.

“I’m so honored,” “This is everything,” “Thank you so much…”

He kept repeating those words as he wept all over his new book and melted into a puddle, both his hair and the skies slowly morphing into a sweet, euphoric mix of purple, pink, and all those pleasant hues. The Princesses, Minerva included, meowed in harmony at the clouds, as they did every previous “purple sky.”

Like how the air turns golden to anyone who donates to a Moon Goddess statue, Aluros’ joy has the power to free anyone lucky enough to get to bask in it of their worries and all other negative sentiments. For all that my friends and I have endured these past few years, I admit this “purple sky” was much needed.

“Oh, I almost forgot… We got you a present too! Happy Birthday, Lukey!”

Well, I was so distracted from the joy of making Aluros happy that I forgot about my own birthday. Being the artist he is, obviously he’d have made me a portrait— marked with paw prints from all four Princesses.

Today, that portrait has its very own place in my study, framed in elegant wood and set right next to my table lamp. Whenever I’m a bit tired from writing, I’d put all my work aside and stare at it for minutes, even hours on end…

He’s gotten better at capturing my likeness yet again. 💕

my FAVORITE thing to do to flesh out characters is to give them hobbies. it makes me very happy and i think adds a layer to each character that's pretty charming. anyways here's the fox squadron's hobbies:

Jax Fraga: this ENTIRE POST is because of him. sweet boy is an amateur photographer and has a dream of someday having a photography exhibit that's from the point of view of the rebellion. i think specifically he really likes to photograph moments of joy and the different cultures and people one meets when fighting a fascist regime. it's something that, like everything he does, he takes SO seriously and is very passionate about it.

Pazima Reynard: soo pazima is the go-to hairdresser for the rebellion. like there are specific off days where she is booked and busy doing braids, trims, haircuts, dye, you name it she can do it. i also think she likes to sew and design clothes, but during the rebellion can't explore that interest as much. also if she has an opportunity to absolutely belt a tune she will take it. pazima has an INSANE voice.

Lottie Reynard: okay so Lottie is a dancer, but I think like many very professional dancers she is like "this isn't my hobby it's my CALLING" (okay theatre kid.) in terms of hobbies i think she likes to whittle? for some reason it's something I imagine wedge teaching her how to do. she's also a decent cook and has her lil garden.

Wedge Antilles: so as above, I imagine he taught lottie whittling. but wedge also just gives barbecue king vibes. there is nothing he likes more than throwing some meat on the grill y'know. i also think he and lottie share that passion for cooking and hosting. also i imagine he can sing. (this is just so i can think of the wedge & pazima duets ok. they would be absolutely legendary. no one sings love shack like them.)

Luke Skywalker: I've said this before but I think luke is a pretty fantastic artist. I imagine him preferring charcoal & graphite and a sketchy, draftsman kind of style. he picks up a habit of carrying a sketchbook to all of the different places he travels to, and if he can catch a moment of downtime tries to sketch out how the trees look on this planet, or an interesting ruin, or his friends sitting by the campfire. it's his way of trying to document everything he's experiencing.
