i love how every character in the outsiders is a dichotomy. darry is hardworking and stressed but he is also so soft and yearns to relax. soda is loving and cries but gets into fights and works on cars and does tough shit. two-bit is funny and messes with people and drinks but he is the biggest protector out there and would kill for any of his friends. steve is closed off and tries to be tough but loves so deeply and feels so deeply. ace has been traumatized to hell and back and can’t trust any strangers or men yet loves the gang so deeply and takes down her walls for them. dally is tough and runs and is a greaser through and through but he loves and protects all of his gang til the end. johnny has been beaten on and shoved down but he still feels so much sympathy for everyone and has so much hope. pony is full of love and anger and terror and happiness and is everything all of greasers are.

Still reading the script, or finally starting and I wanted to share the full of these descriptions. Not just because it was really funny that Randy just exists but, also that apparently the movie always struggled with Dally’s age. He isn’t listed and in marketing material it’s not listed or he’s made older than he is in the book/movie (still 17)

i would like to talk about how scared johnny must've been when darry hit ponyboy

like he flinches so hard when darrel throws the papers at sodapop, to the point he fully turns around as if he's waiting to get hit. he's scared that either himself or sodapop will be hit. then he watches darry, his friend, protector, brother, maybe even the closest thing he has to a good father figure, hit his best friend who's also like a brother right in front of him.

all because pony came home late, and johnny can't help but think that darry hates him and it's all his fault. i'd also like to say that johnny was definitely thinking the entire time that he was next and gonna get it 10x worse. not to mention the fact that johnny's sitting there the entire time nervously as he watched darry just yell at his brothers and johnny can't do anything about it. and johnny hates ponyboy yelling at darry just as bad.

johnny is beaten by his dad a lot and when he sees darry hit ponyboy he is SO terrified for the both of them that he feels the need to get pony out of there immediately, even if darry hates him or will hurt him even more.
