What if mark and pony friendship started in a class after Johnnys death, Ponyboy quieter, because he one, doesn’t have Johnny in that class anymore, and two is grieving, so gradually Mark takes intrest in him because it’s also stated in TWTTIN Ponyboys literally viewed as a folklore or celebrity for a while, I feel like Ponyboy would eventually lash out on the teacher for some quiet snarky comment aboit Johnny and Dally or how all his friends just seemed to die. (He got sent to like a week suspension Darry was pissed but lowkey understood.) so Mark kinda just comes to sit with him during lunch and Pony is pretty much like “tf is this guy..” at first but they slowly become friends and Mark tried his best (though honestly, prolly made it worse) to help him cope, and help him with his mental health issues he had from it… and now they besties 😛😛

every day i think about ponyboy figuring out that he is queer, and being so scared, and being so adamant that he cannot ever tell darry. because darry is tough and hes always going by the rules and even after the events of the book i know it took a long time to get over how he felt about his older brother.

meanwhile darry is just watching his little brother flounder and start to pull away again, and at first hes not sure why but slowly he starts to connect the dots. and god does it hurt to realize that his little brother is going through the exact same journey darry went through all those years ago, and pony doesn't even feel safe enough to talk to darry about it. but also, its not like darry ever talked to anyone about him being gay either, because you just cant trust anyone with that in 1960s oklahoma. so he knows what pony is struggling with but he can't go bring himself to help pony, not when he clearly doesn't want darry to know. and just

i think directly post-canon ponyboy hated anything to do with maintaining his hair apart from greasing it. he hated washing it, getting it cut, taking care of it like he had before they mangled it.

soda washes his hair in the kitchen sink for almost a year after the fact. mostly because pony is still so out of it that he can barely get up and shower when he needs to, so soda sets up a few towels to keep him comfortable and has him lay on the kitchen counter and washes pony’s hair for him every few days.

it helps ponyboy of course, but it also helps soda to see his roots growing back in, to know that they are growing. that every day, every millimeter of auburn-brown hair that grows back puts more days between them and what happened. that pony’s life is going to be more than this, and one day, the bone dry yellow-blonde will be gone and he won’t have to live with the constant reminder of what he thought he had to do.

one day, pony comes out of the shower with his hair wet and freshly washed. soda hugs him and scrubs at his head with a towel.
