A difficult task part 3
-Sherlock, Sherlock! It's fine! We'll figure it out. - John rests his hand on Sherlock's shoulder - I will help you, Mrs. Hudson and Molly can help us too, even Mary!- he tries his best to calm down his friend. Anthea is at the door holding a little boy's hand. Even if they had not done a DNA test, there was no doubt it was Sherlock's, the book was pretty much a copy of the famous detective. Head full of dark wavy hair, it isn't curly, his round eyes a bright innocent blue, his little button nose like Irene's and he has her ears, while his lips are Sherlock's very pinkish. He is wearing a green jumper and blue jeans and brown tennis shoes. He looks neat. Sherlock looks at the little boy with an astonish expression on his face, he does look like him. -hi- his little voice say. -William this is Sherlock Holmes, your father- Mycroft pushes the boy carefully to Sherlock. They stare at each other for a second. Sherlock looks back at Mycroft again with pleading eyes. -If you have any question you can call me, I'll try my best to help you. Mommy will be delighted with the news.- Mycroft nods at them and gives a short wave to William before walking out. -Hi, Will, my name is John. Are you hungry?- John kneels down to be his height. The boy shakes his head no before looking back at Sherlock. -okay, then why don't we open your suitcase, let's see what is inside. Sherlock sits down again still in shock. His head is a mess, a million thoughts crossing his mind. John unzips the blue suitcase revealing the clothes and some story books and a stuffed pirate parrot. It was probably 30cm, bright green, a wooden left, black eye patch and a black pirate hat with a skull in the middle. William grabbed it holding it tight against his chest. Sherlock covers his face before rubbing it. John ignores him and smiles at Will. -What's his name?- he asks petting the parrot. -Bones.- will replies handing the parrot to John. Sherlock takes his hands off his face and looks at will arching his right eyebrow -Bones?... That's creative...did you chose the name yourself?- The little boy nods smiling shyly -Parrots have 25 bones. Birds came from theropods- -Do you like dinosaurs?- Sherlock is now more interested in getting to know him. It was a long evening, Sherlock didn't feel comfortable enough to be near Will. Will didn't feel comfortable enough in such a messy place with things that could break easily but he was bored. John didn't know what to do, didn't know how to help them. Okay that's all my brain could develop. I thought, wouldn't it be cute that Sherlock runs a bubble bath to him and taking him to the zoo, or the park or show him some simple experiments, dressing him in style like him. Sherlock having to deal with Will being extrovert or maybe he is introvert but Sherlock doesn't want him to be like him, because he doesn't want Will to be bullied. Imagine Will taking every kitten he finds in the street and Sherlock trying his best to not scold him but getting a bit annoyed because he has to take them out. And when he takes him to kindergarten (nursery in London) he meets the reader, (here i go again) she could be Will's teacher. She helps Sherlock so he can help Will with his homework, and maybe she teaches him some parenting tips.

Portrait study from the Solitary Cyclist.
I started this in July with the intention of finishing it before the Letters from Watson substack finished SOLI and that did Not happen.
I’ve been gradually chipping away at it ever since with it being about 20hrs just for the digital rendering. And it only took that long because I had to keep scrapping and restarting Holmes’ face and hand. All my love for Jeremy Brett, but his face is so specific that it was the greatest struggle to get his likeness any decent. And I still find it lacking. But what can you do.
I appreciate the learning experience this gave and it’s made me increase my efforts in digital painting in the weeks since I started it. And my complaints aside, I really did enjoy the process. Frustrating at times, but very rewarding. And I’m quite proud to have finished it instead of leaving it in my wips folder for eternity.
Anyways, bonus traditional sketch with too big Holmes Head and too small Watson Head and initial color comp.

This is the third fic in the Nothing Gold series, I’d recommend reading the first two first, since they build on each other quite a bit. Thanks so much to @jrow for the beta and @7-percent for the inspiration.

they don’t know. they don’t know that in sherlock (2009) holmes refused to take a case for over three months, locked himself in his room for weeks straight, drugged himself and the dog (aka went into a self destructive spiral) all bc watson was moving out. or that when watson suggest he go outside holmes replied ‘there’s nothing of interest out there, on earth, at all’ but when watson asked him out to dinner, he immediately said yes. they don’t know!!!

Prompts used in this chapter: seasonal illness - the Case of the Frozen Corpse - midnight - jolly
What’s worse than an ill doctor, you wonder? I’ll tell you. It’s an ill consulting detective.
December 15
“I’m dying, John” Sherlock rasps with a hoarse voice.
“No, you’re not,” John says and places a cold cloth on Sherlock’s hot forehead.
The great detective is rarely ill, but when he is, his dramatic personae comes forth with full force. He’s got John’s full sympathy, because John hates being ill himself, and he sucks at being a patient. Where John gets grumpy and aggressive, Sherlock whines and gets clingy as a child with separation anxiety. It can be endearing but also utterly taxing. As long as Sherlock’s fever is this high, John’s reluctant to leave him by himself, and has asked Mycroft to get one of his minions to do some shopping. Mrs. Hudson is also under the weather, so John’s included her shopping list too when he texted the older Holmes brother.
***
When John comes back from checking on their landlady, who doesn’t need a doctor’s attention thank you very much, Sherlock’s dozed off on the sofa. John sighs relieved, finally getting some time to himself. He takes a quick shower and starts to write down their last case on the blog, which he calls The Case of the Frozen Corpse, fully knowing that Sherlock will disapprove.
It never ceases to amaze John how vast Sherlock’s knowledge about obscure establishments and businesses within London is. It had only taken him a glance at the missing man’s correspondence to realise where he was. The butchery hadn’t been mentioned per se; only the word Baron, which evidently was enough for the great detective.
Close to Baron’s Court was a butchery with a large freezer. After a thorough search, that made all the involved cold to the bone, they’d found the corpse of the missing man.
Brilliant, as always, John concludes and posts the entry.
He startles when he hears his name being called. It’s almost midnight and John’s ready for bed and is grateful that he doesn’t have to rouse Sherlock from his sleep.
“How are you feeling, love?” John asks and kneels in front of the sofa.
“Still dying, I’m afraid,” Sherlock mutters, but his temperature is more to John’s liking now.
He’ll probably be fine after a couple of days with enough sleep and rest.
“Let’s get you to bed, and if you’re a jolly good boy I might read my last blog entry as a bedtime story to you,” John promises.
It’s clearly too painful to roll his eyes, but Sherlock manages a sound John chooses to interpret as yes, John…

A difficult task part 2
-And what are you going to do?- asks John looking at Mycroft knowing Sherlock wouldn't be capable of taking care of a child and he doesn't have experience either and he knows Mycroft doesn't like people nor little messy kid who needs attention. -why me? It's his child. Miss Adler requested me to bring the child to his father. That's what I am doing. I'm pretty sure she got herself in some trouble and she cannot take care of him, she trusts Sherlock. And obviously she trusts on you too Doctor.- Mycroft hands the suitcase to a very confused John. -she doesn't want to be found but she is asking for help since she left her child. Now be helpful. -where is he right now?- Sherlock asks standing up again with his hands on his hips -William is in the car with Anthea.- Mycroft takes his phone in hand as he starts texting her secretary to bring the boy upstairs -No, Mycroft. I can't do it. You take the child, or send him to a boarding school.- Sherlock walks to the window as he looks down at the black car parked out. John frowns, he doesn't like the idea of sending a little boy to a boarding school all by himself, no one to care for him, just thought of the poor scared boy made his heart ache. -I already enrolled William in the best nursery in London. I expected him to be as smart as you and Irene.- Mycroft steps to the side as he hears Anthea's shoes in the stairs. -No, Mycroft he doesn't even know me. You take him with you, you are the government, you will take better care of him than me! I have cases to solve- Sherlock feels a wave of worry, he doesn't feel capable of doing it, he is not a father figure, people doesn't like him, he doesn't know how to talk to people let alone a kid!

“Liar.”
—— The Empty Hearse
Remember when Sherlock saw but ignored the ‘Liar’ as he deduced Mary? The reason why he didn't have the heart to tell John was not just because he didn't wish for John to think that he was trying to “meddle” with his life, but more importantly, it was because Sherlock felt like he was in no position to hold Mary hostage for being a liar.
Sherlock knew well enough that being the liar he was, as he had lied to save John he had also almost killed him. He knew well enough that Mary‘s lies were what had pulled John back from the brink once more, so how was he in any position to condemn Mary for committing the same crime as he has only with the result of saving John.
And by urging John to forgive Mary‘s lies, how was Sherlock not wishing, wishing, wishing for John to forgive him as well.
I lied to save you, John. I don't give a damn if she lied for her own sake but she ended up saving you nonetheless.
I don't want to die but I killed myself to save you, John. I would die over and over again to save you, I would step off of a building I would let serial killers suffocate me I would shoot a man point-blank for your wife and embrace the consequence of going on a suicide mission with no return. I would, and I have.
I'm sorry that my lies have hurt you, John. But I am never sorry that those lies have saved you.
I lied to save your life, John.

“Because… you chose her.”
—— SHERLOCK, The Empty Hearse
As for the “you chose her”?
It was not the accusation of Sherlock‘s toward John for choosing Mary‘s lies over his. Because how could John not.
Her lies were pretty dresses decorated with promising smiles and overt affection. Her lies were far less harmful than my vacant pulse under your fingertips or my brains splattered on the pavement in front of your eyes.
You chose her. It is what it is.
