ACD johnlock harry potter au where watson is actually a wizard, tells holmes after they get married in secret-because same sex marriage is normal in magical Britain. Cmon, with all that blood purity thing, there surely was some pureblood who would rather marry the same gender instead of a muggle-but instead of holmes claiming it ridiculous and hating it, he is absolutely FASCINATED about it.

He studies diagon ally. He wonders and questions watson-cus I hc that he also went through healer training for wixens-if their anatomy is any different. He runs experiments-under watson’s supervision, of course-on potions.

Give me john watson being afraid of getting rejected by someone as logical as holmes, and so, SO relieved and full of love when he is accepted. When he is still seen as his husband, partner, instead of something weird.

Give me sherlock holmes who is just so fascinated about his husband’s new side he never knew about, and it doesn’t change anything about the man he loves. He tells him how he brings new colorful adventures to his previous monotone life.

Give me holmes and watson, the victorian husbands who would accept and love each other no matter what.

High Wizardry feels so much like a 'finale' I've often wondered if, when you finished writing HW, at the time that you thought it was the conclusion. Did time pass and you suddenly realize 'oh, I've got more stories to tell here, turns-out,' or did you simply put YW aside at the end of HW knowing you'd come back to it later when time and scheduling or other matters allowed? I mean the gap between HW and AWA isn't very long, but the jump from AWA to TWD is quite long indeed.

When I finished High Wizardry, the last thing on my mind was ending the series. (Though there's been a rumor for many years that originally "there were only going to be three books." I have no idea where that came from.) I knew then, as I'd known from when I finished So You Want To Be A Wizard, that there was a lot more story to tell.... even if I wasn't sure about where to go next.

What was on my mind, though, when I was working on that book in 1988 or thereabouts, was that the series might not have a chance to continue any further at that publisher.

Delacorte Books / Dell Publishing had been acquired by Doubleday in 1986. This was nothing like the gobbling-up of publishing houses by media giants with which we're now way too familiar. But rumors started stirring immediately that (to use the equally familiar, euphemistic phrase) "economies would have to be made" as part of the acquisition. And sure enough, they were. Dell (or its new corporate overlords) quickly started "letting go" many of its newer or less-profitable writers, to allow the company to concentrate on older, better-selling, more profitable names.

As one of the newer kids on the block, I was one of the first of the numerous writers let go. So was Jane Yolen (and ffs, who throws Jane Yolen overboard??! It's sheer fucking idiocy). But at least I'd known for a while which way the wind was likely to blow, and I was ready for it. In High Wizardry I'd concentrated on tying off all the currently hanging issues, so that readers wouldn't find themselves dealing with a corporately-manufactured cliffhanger. It's possible some of that air of finality manifests itself in HW's "tone of voice."

The Young Wizards books were then homeless in the US (in terms of any new ones coming out). But the first three books then went into print in the UK, in their Transworld / Corgi editions, starting in 1991; and they were still there when A Wizard Abroad was ready to go to press a couple of years later. That's why AWAb's first tradpub edition was from the UK, as a Young Corgi paperback; and its first US and hardcover appearance was from, of all places, the US SF Book Club—always historically a good friend to the series—with a fab cover by David Cherry. Abroad would not see a US edition again until Harcourt's Magic Carpet imprint brought it home to join its older, newly reprinted "siblings" in 1997.*

...And as for that long pause between AWAb and The Wizard's Dilemma: with the best will in the world, even an enthusiastic new publishing house will put on the brakes for a bit until a newly acquired series proves itself. Fortunately, at Harcourt it did. Dilemma came out there in 2001: and there the books remain. But their history's been repeatedly punctuated by the uncertainty that's the constant companion of midlist writers always looking ahead to the next corporate acquisition... and wondering whether they'll survive the next round of "economies."

As John Watson's been heard to say: "I'm never bored." :)

*The timing of this sequence of reissues is possibly what started the hilarious rumor that the Young Wizards novels were ripoffs of, uh, some other writer's wizard concept. (shrug) Not my fault if some people can't read copyright dates. :)

This was always going to be an online romance scam in any modern version, so lets jump straight to the truly interesting bits of this case!

They are best pals! They are best pals! Time someone said it. The pedantic Spanish woman who loves spreadsheets, the violin-playing detective who doesn’t know who Beyoncé is, and All Hail John. We love all three of you.

Sherlock desperately trying to fit in please John is touching as always. And I’ll never get over how softly John says "We're past that."

The ACD quote - one of his weirder ones, tbh - of Holmes and Watson flying hand in hand over London and peaking into houses and wondering at the queerness of life made me very happy. I just never expected to hear it in this version!

Firelard John getting totally sucked into the game universe in spite of being such a sceptic at first cracks me up to no end. And of course he’s a wizard. Although I absolutely fail to see how John has to play his way through the game in order to get talking to Miles at all. They could just have talked on the phone? And he is a bit of a dickhead for letting himself get killed in-game while trying to solve the case.

Considering how Joel & Co. don‘t let themselves be bound by the genders of ACD‘s characters, I suspected after Part 1 that Miles‘s mum (probably in league with her new partner) was behind "Angel" so she could get/keep her hands on Miles‘s fortune. Absolutely loved Sherlock for knowing where THEY live right away.

"It‘s nice if she’s calm but it really doesn’t matter." - Oh, Sherlock.

John being a therapist to absolutely everyone is so touching. And then Sherlock tracking down the real Angel. This case ended WAY better than the original. Well done Firelard. Making everyone better with the healing power of your words. I always love it when John gets to shine in these stories and he certainly shone big time, here.

CATWEAZLE (1970)

Catweazle was a popular British children’s TV series of the early 1970s. He’s an 11th century bumbling wizard who, when pursued by soldiers through a wood, says a spell as he jumps into a pond. When he emerges, he believes he’s made the soldiers and the wood disappear; in fact he has jumped 900 years into the future. He arrives on a farm in rural England in the year 1969 and befriends a farmer's son, a ginger teenager named Edward Bennet, nicknamed Carrot, who spends most of the rest of the series attempting to hide the wizard from his father and the farmhand Sam. Catweazle searches for a way to return to his own time while hiding in a disused water tower. Whenever he is spotted, he uses his magic amulet to hypnotise people into forgetting that they saw him. He also has a toad called Touchwood (who’s featured in the screenshots above).

There was a second series shown in 1971 in which Catweazle has moved to a stately home, where he befriends the son of the unhinged gentry family living there. Frankly, series one is much better and more fondly remembered (especially by me—I loved this show as a boy!). A third series was planned but never came to fruition.

These screenshots are taken from Series 1, Episode 12—The Wisdom of Solomon. A housekeeper called Mrs Skinner has moved into the farm along with her obnoxious son Arthur. He and Carrot do not get along. This is the only episode to feature school uniforms, so it’s good to see one of the characters is wearing grey short trousers. Carrot is supposed to be around 14, so I think Arthur is meant to be younger, say 12/13. It’s a contemporary production, so the uniforms (complete with school caps!) are authentic for the period, and boys didn’t generally continue wearing shorts to school much past 12 (in state schools anyway—although I stand to be corrected). Did you spot that Arthur’s shorts are fully lined?

In reality, Robin Davies who played Carrot was 15 at the time of filming. Feddy Foote, meanwhile, who played Arthur, was actually older than him at 16 years old. Both boys would still have been at school when the episode was shot, so I wonder how young Freddy reacted when he first saw his costume—or what the other boys at his school thought when it was transmitted?

Catweazle was played by Geoffrey Bayldon, who enjoyed a substantial TV, film and stage career. The series featured a host of famous faces, such as Patricia Hayes, Peter Sallis, John Junkin, Peter Butterworth, Hattie Jacques, Neil McCarthy, Moray Watson, Bernard Hepton… It’s a veritable who’s who of popular British actors and comedy talent of the time. You can find most of the episodes on YouTube but I’ve included a link to the one with the two boys in their uniforms below.

Master Davies will be returning to this blog wearing a different school uniform (still with a cap though!) and with a short-trousered younger brother in tow in And Mother Makes Three. As a final note, he died his hair for Catweazle, so that his character could better live up to his nickname.
