More than 100 former national security officials from Republican administrations and former Republican members of Congress endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday after concluding that their party’s nominee, Donald J. Trump, is “unfit to serve again as president.”
In a letter to the public, the Republicans, including both vocal longtime Trump opponents and others who had not endorsed Joseph R. Biden Jr. in 2020, argued that while they might “disagree with Kamala Harris” on many issues, Mr. Trump had demonstrated “dangerous qualities.” Those include, they said, “unusual affinity” for dictators like President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and “contempt for the norms of decent, ethical and lawful behavior.”
“As president,” the letter said, “he promoted daily chaos in government, praised our enemies and undermined our allies, politicized the military and disparaged our veterans, prioritized his personal interest above American interests and betrayed our values, democracy and this country’s founding documents.”
The letter condemned Mr. Trump’s incitement of the mob attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, aimed at allowing him to hold onto power after losing an election, saying that “he has violated his oath of office and brought danger to our country.” It quoted Mr. Trump’s own former vice president, Mike Pence, who has said that “anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be president of the United States.”
The letter came not long after former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter, former Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, both said they would vote for Ms. Harris. Democrats featured a number of anti-Trump Republicans at their nominating convention last month, including former Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois. Mr. Pence has said he will not endorse Mr. Trump but has not endorsed Ms. Harris.
The 111 signatories included former officials who served under Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush or George W. Bush. Many of them had previously broken with Mr. Trump, including two former defense secretaries, Chuck Hagel and William S. Cohen; Robert B. Zoellick, a former president of the World Bank; the former C.I.A. directors Michael V. Hayden and William H. Webster; a former director of national intelligence, John D. Negroponte; and former Gov. William F. Weld of Massachusetts. Miles Taylor and Olivia Troye, two Trump administration officials who became vocal critics, also signed.
But a number of Republicans who did not sign a similar letter on behalf of Mr. Biden in 2020 signed the one for Ms. Harris this time, including several former House members, like Charles W. Boustany Jr. of Louisiana, Barbara Comstock of Virginia, Dan Miller of Florida and Bill Paxon of New York

More than 100 former national security officials from Republican administrations and former Republican members of Congress endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday after concluding that their party’s nominee, Donald J. Trump, is “unfit to serve again as president.”

The letter came not long after former Vice President Dick Cheneyand his daughter, former Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, both said they would vote for Ms.
Bush. In their letter, the Republicans acknowledged concerns about “some of the positions advocated by the left wing of the Democratic Party,” and some of them have been quite critical of the Biden-Harris administration. Just last year, Mr. Zoellick wrote a newspaper essay eviscerating Democratic economic policies. But the letter said that “any potential concerns” about Ms. Harris “pale in comparison to” those over Mr. Trump.

Patriot Games is a more than serviceable thriller, perhaps a bit out of date when viewing it now, but still a very effective good against evil piece. The source material is so dense and intricate it was always going to be hard to condense that into a 2 hour movie, but I feel the makers manage to keep it fleshy whilst making the respective characters interesting and watchable. The acting on show is more than adequate, Harrison Ford is great in the role of Jack Ryan, he manages to portray him as a sensitive family man who can step up to the plate when things get ugly, and Anne Archer is solid enough as the wife and mother caught up in the web of nastiness unfolding. The baddies are led by the brooding Sean Bean who is a little under written, whilst Richard Harris is sadly underused. However, the action set pieces make their mark and thankfully we get a riveting...

Earlier this year, a group of St. Louis police officers were put on administrative leave after their racist social media posts were resurfaced, prompting the police department to launch an investigation into them. Now, the head of St. Louis’ police union is calling for its members to support their fellow cops by liking themselves to Marvel’s violent vigilante character the Punisher.
Despite the fact that Gerry Conway has expressed that it’s disturbing when people in positions of power embrace the Punisher as a symbol for their own sense of justice—and Frank Castle himself has recently gone on the record as thinking that cops who idolize him need to rethink their life choices—some police continue using the symbol.
Ed Clark, the head of St. Louis’ police union, is urging officers to use an altered version of the vigilante’s logo after 22 police officers within the union found themselves under an internal investigation. It was discovered by the Plain View Project (an initiative drawing attention to the social media posts of law enforcement officials) that they posted a variety of racist and Islamophobic remarks to their social media pages which raised serious questions. The posts are documented on Plain View Project’s site on a few individual pages. After seeing some of the posts for himself, Police Chief John W. Hayden, Jr. called them “deeply insensitive,” and insisted that the police department’s internal investigation into the officers would be “an extensive process and a competent process.”
According to a NY Daily News report, in response to the posts being unearthed, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly M. Gardner moved to permanently block seven of the officers in question from submitting cases to her office, while the remaining 15 were eligible to have their privileges reinstated following a deeper look into their conduct.
“Police integrity is at the core of the community’s confidence in the criminal justice system,” Gardner said in the release. “After careful examination of the underlying bias contained in those social media posts, we have concluded that this bias would likely influence an officer’s ability to perform his or her duties in an unbiased manner.”
When reached for comment via email, a representative for the St. Louis Metropolitan Department told io9, “We do not have any further comment.” Marvel did not respond with a comment for this story at the time of publishing.
Last Wednesday evening, union head Clark took to the group’s Facebook page to upload a letter in which he claimed that the officers under review could no longer send their cases to prosecutors because they posted a variation of the Punisher logo (a “thin blue line design” seemingly meant to bring attention to the “Blue Lives Matter” belief system), and did not mention the officers’ other documented posts. Clark called the review process “political”:
The fact is, there will always be someone who finds fault with any symbol we identify with or person we choose to carry our message. The Blue Line symbol and the Blue Line Punisher symbol have been widely embraced by the law enforcement community as a symbol for the war against those who hate law enforcement. It’s how we show the world that we hold the line between good and evil.
What jumps out most immediately from Clark’s statement is how matter-of-factly he articulates his and many other cops’ misguided, and frankly alarming, belief that they should be free to wage war on people. One could argue that Clark and the other fan-cops who worship the Punisher simply don’t understand who or what the character is. In Frank Castle, it seems Clark and his peers see someone who would defend the cops under investigation, and given how the Punisher usually responds to his opponents, the message is more than chilling.
While Clark and the union cops may not want to grapple with reality over fiction, Police Chief Hayden made it abundantly clear in a letter of his own why the officers are being looked into and stated that the Punisher in no way represents the police force’s express mission of protecting the public. Here is a portion of his public statement:
As law enforcement officers, our fundamental responsibility is to serve the community; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality and justice. This is the oath we all took.
Although fictional in nature, the Punisher logo does not coincide with our mission to protect life and property and achieve a peaceful society...Undeniably, the recent social media coverage impacts our community relations, our potential ability to protect your integrity, and forces us all to work harder to build and mend relationships. While social media can be an asset in continuing relations with family, friends and colleagues, we all must remain cognizant of the messages certain posts may send and the interpretation the community may have of them.
What Hayden is saying is rather obvious, but apparently, it needs to be repeated: When police officer slap on the Punisher’s logo, they aren’t just stating that they’re fans or that they look up to Frank Castle. The message they’re sending says that they want the public to see them the same way civilians see the Punisher—as lethal people armed to the teeth who have no qualms about shooting first because they’re certain they’re in the right.

Sorry I had to go looking through old emails to find the lists sent to me, the fiction section is my personal rec list of books I'm reading and authors I love. I always always insist anyone who wants to write Indigenous characters in their stories need to read Indigenous authors. Not just to show support, but you’ll not find a better teacher on ensuring you're not falling into racist tropes and tokenizing your characters than by surrounding yourself with beloved stories and characters from that demographic.
For non fiction I've separated culture, language, and lore from the ones that focus on regions, historical events, wars, and people.
I know I'm missing books, but I was sent a lot of recs in private messages I can't track down. Generally if you see a book by these three authors they are the #1 recommended resource from everyone I've spoken with.
C.A. Weslager
Anthony F.C. Wallace
Paul A. W. Wallace
Some of these books are very old so they'll have dated terminology, be out of print, and can be expensive (Red Men on the Brandywine goes for over $200) so I have not been able to read everything on this list. I know there are more than a few with ebooks available through libraries, and some ebooks. My goal is to one day have all these books as PDFs, even if I have to buy and scan them myself.

President Trump continues to use inflammatory language as many Americans protest the unlawful death of George Floyd and the unjust treatment of black Americans by our justice system. As the protests have grown, so has the intensity of the president’s rhetoric. He has gone so far as to make a shocking promise: to send active-duty members of the U.S. military to “dominate” protesters in cities throughout the country — with or without the consent of local mayors or state governors. On Monday, the president previewed his approach on the streets of Washington. He had 1,600 troops from around the country transported to the D.C. area, and placed them on alert, as an unnamed Pentagon official put it, “to ensure faster employment if necessary.” As part of the show of force that Trump demanded, military helicopters made low-level passes over peaceful protesters — a military tactic sometimes used to disperse enemy combatants — scattering debris and broken glass among the crowd. He also had a force, including members of the National Guard and federal officers, that used flash-bang grenades, pepper spray and, according to eyewitness accounts, rubber bullets to drive lawful protesters, as well as members of the media and clergy, away from the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church. All so he could hold a politically motivated photo op there with members of his team, including, inappropriately, Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper and Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Looting and violence are unacceptable acts, and perpetrators should be arrested and duly tried under the law. But as Monday’s actions near the White House demonstrated, those committing such acts are largely on the margins of the vast majority of predominantly peaceful protests. While several past presidents have called on our armed services to provide additional aid to law enforcement in times of national crisis — among them Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson — these presidents used the military to protect the rights of Americans, not to violate them. As former leaders in the Defense Department — civilian and military, Republican, Democrat and independent — we all took an oath upon assuming office “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States,” as did the president and all members of the military, a fact that Gen. Milley pointed out in a recent memorandum to members of the armed forces. We are alarmed at how the president is betraying this oath by threatening to order members of the U.S. military to violate the rights of their fellow Americans. President Trump has given governors a stark choice: either end the protests that continue to demand equal justice under our laws, or expect that he will send active-duty military units into their states. While the Insurrection Act gives the president the legal authority to do so, this authority has been invoked only in the most extreme conditions when state or local authorities were overwhelmed and were unable to safeguard the rule of law. Historically, as Secretary Esper has pointed out, it has rightly been seen as a tool of last resort. Beyond being unnecessary, using our military to quell protests across the country would also be unwise. This is not the mission our armed forces signed up for: They signed up to fight our nation’s enemies and to secure — not infringe upon — the rights and freedoms of their fellow Americans. In addition, putting our servicemen and women in the middle of politically charged domestic unrest risks undermining the apolitical nature of the military that is so essential to our democracy. It also risks diminishing Americans’ trust in our military — and thus America’s security — for years to come. As defense leaders who share a deep commitment to the Constitution, to freedom and justice for all Americans, and to the extraordinary men and women who volunteer to serve and protect our nation, we call on the president to immediately end his plans to send active-duty military personnel into cities as agents of law enforcement, or to employ them or any another military or police forces in ways that undermine the constitutional rights of Americans. The members of our military are always ready to serve in our nation’s defense. But they must never be used to violate the rights of those they are sworn to protect.

Wild Pink Interview: 99% Literal
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
One of the breakout indie rock albums of 2018 came from Wild Pink, the New York band led by John Ross that found success the same way The War on Drugs did: embracing the heartland. You wouldn’t necessarily think of rural America when you think of Brooklyn, let alone modern-day Philly. But Ross keeps both his music and his real stories broad enough to apply anywhere. At first a punk band who released two EPs in 2015, Wild Pink dropped their self-titled debut last year. Right then, Ross immediately started writing what would become Yolk in the Fur. At the same time, he was exploring ambient music with his solo project Eerie Gaits, something that added to the sonic expanse of Yolk. (EG released a split single with Dondadi in April.)
When I spoke to Ross a few months ago over the phone, he was at home in Brooklyn, having just played the record release show for Yolk in the Fur. (They played 7 of the 10 songs, still figuring out how to duplicate the remaining 3 due to their additional production.) Two nights ago, they started a tour with label mates Restorations; they play Empty Bottle Saturday night along with Cleveland’s Signals Midwest. If you’ve seen Wild Pink before, they may be a bit different this time around, and not just because of their new songs. They’ve added a keyboard player, and when playing in NYC, a pedal steel player.
Read my conversation with Ross below.
Since I Left You: Beyond what might be obvious to the listener, how is Yolk in the Fur unique as compared to the debut or anything else you’ve released?
John Ross: Man, I don’t know. I feel like in the past, I didn’t spend as much time on the songs. Each song on this record got its fair share of time.
SILY: What was the recording process like?
JR: We went with Justin [Pizzoferrato] of Sonelab in Western Mass. We did two days with him. There are a few songs I started recording at home, but then I brought it to Justin.
SILY: What influenced some of the sonic shifts from the debut--increased use of synthesizers, space, etc.?
JR: I think I just wanted it to sound bigger. After that first record came out, I started using synthesizers on my solo project Eerie Gaits. So I wanted to incorporate them into these songs.
SILY: Did doing Eerie Gaits, apart from having synthesizers at your disposal, have an influence on the aesthetic of Yolk in the Fur?
JR: Absolutely. I love ambient music. I think Yolk in the Fur has ambient music in its DNA. Everything that I do has some roots in that world for sure.
SILY: Lyrically, the new record has quite a bit of a sense of time and place. There are a lot of specific references to specific places and things. To what extent are they based on events or people, or are they based more on ideas or feelings?
JR: It’s all pretty literal. Like 99% literal. So every time there’s a time and place, it’s nonfiction. Or at least coming from an actual time and place. Maybe there’s some liberties taken here and there.
SILY: How do you decide what stories you want to tell?
JR: I don’t know. It becomes clearer when you spend time with an idea, whether or not it’s gonna make it or not. It kinds of becomes clearer, if that makes sense.
SILY: What about the title track made you want to name the album after it? Or did that come in reverse?
JR: The album title came after the title track. The lyrics around the title are a good representation of what I think the record is about.
SILY: A lot of lines are broad and sweeping and suggest a long period of time, and it fits with nostalgic, expansive music. Can you talk about the interplay between the music and the lyrics?
JR: It’s not anything I’m aware of doing. I gravitate towards and dig emotional music. Not emo, but emotional music. Sweeping, romantic stuff. It’s just what I enjoy listening to. That’s how the songs end up.
I like cinematic music. My music, to me, has a cinematic quality, and the lyrics are pretty narrative and lend themselves to a cinematic feeling.
SILY: Have you ever written a film score?
JR: Yeah. I’ve done the music for some short films and a feature film several years ago. I write a lot of commercial music. So putting music to video is something I enjoy doing.
Tumblr media
SILY: What’s the story behind the album art?
JR: We knew that we wanted to have the same format as the first record. It’s the same dimensions, just a variation in the color and image. It’s an image from NASA of the Kuwaiti oil fires of 1991. In the same way I don’t exactly know why “Yolk in the Fur” is about knowing when you need to stand up and be tough, that image is just kind of looking at a huge representation of how shitty humanity can be. The striking image, at first you might not even be able to tell what it is, then when you do know, you’re like, “Oh fuck. There’s something seriously wrong with people who would do that to the planet.”
SILY: The shape of it almost looks like the Grim Reaper.
JR: Oh, cool! My opinion, at first glance, it looks beautiful, but when you study it more, you see the horror in it, which is a cool dichotomy.
SILY: A lot has been written about the difference in tone between your first two records, this one a bit more optimistic. How would you say that the new record balances between a sense of acceptance about the way things are and will always be and a yearning to make things better?
JR: I think the record is definitely more optimistic. I think the first record is loosely about how shitty things are in the world today. This record is definitely about that as well, but also appreciating people in your life and still trying to see some optimism in the world. There are a few songs on there about seeing something mundane that has some beauty in it.
SILY: What gives you optimism on a daily basis?
JR: I love working on music every day. That’s huge. Honestly, my dog.
SILY: Animals may be less intelligent than us, but you never question their innate goodness.
JR: They’re pure.
SILY: Do you still identify with the aesthetic of your early material that’s a bit more punk and raw?
JR: No, but as soon as something’s released, you kind of just move on. Actually, for some reason, I just listened to the Good Life songs for the first time in 2 or 3 years, and it sounded like a totally different band. But I’m glad it started there. I’m glad it’s where it is now, too. I don’t really listen to a ton of punk music.
SILY: What's next for you?
JR: I’m writing another record right now, so I hope to start recording it at the end of this year or early next year at the latest. I’m also working on another Eerie Gaits record.
SILY: Do you have any idea what shape either of those records are going to take?
JR: I have some ideas--I don’t want to say too much and paint myself into a corner--but I have some rough ideas. I am writing quite a bit.
SILY: Is there anything you’ve been listening to, watching, or reading lately that’s caught your attention?
JR: Ken Burns’ Vietnam. I’m really enjoying the new Middle Kids record. I always like Bruce Springsteen. A lot of ambient music. I also just found this Ethiopian jazz guy I’ve been really liking, Mulatu Astatke.

Killed by SPD during the decade after John T. Williams (2010 to present)
26 or 27 people were killed by the SPD during the decade (10.67 years) from January 1, 2000 until August 29, 2010, the day before John T. Williams was murdered. See the listing here.
30 people were killed by the SPD during the decade (10.67 years) after John T. Williams murder, from August 31, 2010 until April 28, 2021.
National estimates suggest that for every police shooting that results in a death there are the same, or as much as twice as many, police shootings that don't result in death, therefore getting far less press coverage.
All SPD killings documented here do not involve motor vehicle collisions/accidents. See 2000 to 2010 SPD killings for an explanation.

LUCY BUYS WESTINGHOUSE
Summer 1958
Tumblr media
Cast
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Herself) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes.
Tumblr media
Desi Arnaz (Himself) was born in Cuba in 1917 and immigrated to America as a youngster.  He was a musician who married Lucille Ball in 1940 after meeting her on the set of 1939’s Too Many Girls, which he had done on stage in New York. In order to keep him ‘off the road’ Ball convinced producers to cast him as her husband in a new television project based on her radio show “My Favorite Husband.” The network was convinced. In 1951, Arnaz and Ball began playing Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, roles they would be identified with for the rest of their lives. The couple had two children together, Lucie and Desi Jr. In 1960, Ball and Arnaz divorced. Desi became a producer, responsible for such hits as “The Mothers-in-Law” (1967-69). He re-married in 1963. Desi Aranz died in 1986, just a few years before Ball.
William Frawley (Himself) was already a Hollywood veteran when he was hired by Desi Arnaz to play Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” After the series concluded he joined the cast of “My Three Sons” playing Bub Casey. He did an episode of “The Lucy Show” in October 1965 which was his final TV appearance before his death in March 1966.
Tumblr media
Vivian Vance (Herself) was born Vivian Roberta Jones in Cherryvale, Kansas in 1909, although her family quickly moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she was raised. She had extensive theatre experience, co-starring on Broadway with Ethel Merman in “Anything Goes.” She was acting in a play in Southern California when she was spotted by Desi Arnaz and hired to play Ethel Mertz, Lucy Ricardo’s neighbor and best friend. The pairing is credited with much of the success of “I Love Lucy.” Vance was convinced to join the cast of “The Lucy Show” in 1962, but stayed with the series only through season three, making occasional guest appearances afterwards. She made a total of six appearance on “Here’s Lucy.” She also joined Lucy for a TV special “Lucy Calls the President” in 1977. Vance died two years later.
Tumblr media
Ross Elliott (Mr. Hayden, Westinghouse Executive) played the director of Lucy’s famous Vitameatavegamin commercial in 1952. He played Ross, Ricky’s publicity agent in three other episodes. From 1961 to 1964 he played another TV director on “The Jack Benny Program.”  He played a film director in “Lucy and the Return of Iron Man” (TLS S4;E11) in 1965. His final appearance with Lucille Ball was “Lucy, The Sheriff” (HL S6;E18) in 1974.
Hazel Pierce (Extra on the Tijuana Street Set) was Lucille Ball’s camera and lighting stand-in throughout “I Love Lucy.” She also made frequent appearances on the show. She went on to make several on-camera appearances on “The Lucy Show.” Pierce was an uncredited extra in the film Forever Darling (1956).
Alan Roberts (Mexican Boy) was born Alan Costello. Also in 1958, he appeared on "Leave it to Beaver” as a Spanish boy who is befriends by the Beaver. His last screen credit was in 1965 and he died in 2008 at the age of 59.
Although only seen from the back here, Roberts has a supporting role in “Lucy Goes to Mexico.”
Bennett Green (Voice of the Director) was Desi Arnaz’s camera and lighting stand-in during “I Love Lucy.” He also made frequent appearances on the show as well as on “The Lucy Show.”
Roy Rowan (Announcer) was the announcer for all Lucille Ball's sitcoms and also made occasional on-camera appearances.
Extras from the Tijuana Street scene of “Lucy Goes To Mexico” (LDCH S2;E1).
Tumblr media
"Lucy Buys Westinghouse" (working title) is a promotional film intended for network affiliates and the Westinghouse dealers when Desilu partnered with the company for the “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” series. This was an anthology series that presented a different story each week. “The Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” ran from 1958 to 1960 and each episodes was introduced by Desi Arnaz, standing in front of a show curtain (a stipulation of Westinghouse’s sponsorship). Lucy and Desi also sometimes participated in the Westinghouse commercials, hosted by Betty Furness. This series notably gave birth to “The Untouchables,” which was later picked-up by Desilu for a full series, as well as “The Twilight Zone.” Like “I Love Lucy,” the series originally aired on Monday nights.
“Lucy Buys Westinghouse” is the film’s unofficial title for reference purposes. It should not imply that Lucy buys the Westinghouse Corporation, just Westinghouse products.
Tumblr media
It would also present “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” (originally titled “The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show”) which continued the escapades of the Ricardos and the Mertzes after the cancellation of “I Love Lucy” in 1957. The first five of the hour-long series' 13 episodes were run as specials, sponsored by Ford.
Tumblr media
Westinghouse Electric Corporation was founded on January 8, 1886 by its founder George Westinghouse (1846–1914). The corporation purchased CBS in 1995.
There are no opening or closing credits, but it is likely that the film was directed by Jerry Thorpe and written by Bob Schiller and Bob Weiskopf, the team responsible for all the “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hours” during seasons 2 and 3. The “I Love Lucy” theme music is used.
Lucille Ball is referred to as Mrs. Arnaz, the only time she is ever called by her married name on film. Vivian Vance and William Frawley portray themselves, although like Lucy, their characters behave more like their fictional counterparts than the actors themselves. The half hour film includes footage of “Lucy Goes to Mexico” being filmed at Desilu Studios.
Desi Arnaz gives a representative of Westinghouse a tour of Desilu Studios (actually three studio properties) while Lucy tries to secretly place orders with him for Westinghouse products. The Gower Street studio was formerly owned by RKO and with the purchase came all the props and costumes, and stock film from its earlier productions.
Tumblr media
The film was originally shot in black and white and included on a video titled “Lucy's Lost Episodes.” When the film was included on an “I Love Lucy” DVD as a bonus feature, it was colorized. It was never broadcast on television in its entirety and it is not known if it was ever used for the purpose it was intended. The film occasionally uses a laugh track.
Tumblr media
At the start of the film, Lucy is sitting at Desi's desk, looking through the Westinghouse catalog.
Tumblr media
Lucy: “I was just reading about the all-new mobile speed Westinghouse vacuum cleaner. It's a dilly!”
Tumblr media
Desi's office is decorated with photographs of his children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as their Emmy Awards and other memorabilia. Lucy makes fun of the way Desi says 'Westinghouse' as 'Westin-Gouse'. He then calls their spokes people Betty Furness and John Cameron Swayze 'Betty Furnace' and 'John Cameron Sweezie'.
Tumblr media
Desi mentions to Mr. Hayden the list of prestigious writers who want to join the Desilu team: Aaron Spelling, Rod Serling, Adrian Spies, and Garsin Kanin.  Aaron Spelling directed “The Night the Phone Rang” which (coincidentally) starred Ross Elliott (Mr. Hayden). Aaron Spelling had appeared on “I Love Lucy” and in 1986 convinced Lucille Ball to return to television with her last series, “Life With Lucy.”  Rod Serling directed “The Time Element” which eventually led to his series “The Twilight Zone.” New Jersey native Adrian Spies directed six installments, including “So Tender, So Profane” starring Desi Arnaz. There is no record of Garsin Kanin ever writing for the “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” series.
Tumblr media
Desi says that the first show will be “Bernadette” (“Song of Bernadette”) adapted by Ludi Claire, who also adapted “The Bridge on San Luis Rey.” Desi is referring to the 1958 television adaptation of “San Luis Rey,” not the 1944 feature film.
When Bill Frawley and Vivian Vance drop by to invite the Arnaz's to lunch at the commissary, Desi offers to pay in order to get Lucy out of his hair during the tour.
Bill: “Oh, no you don't. This is my treat. Fred Mertz might be a tightwad, but not Bill Frawley.” Vivian: “Oh, well, in that case Bill, we'll go to Romanoffs.” Bill: “Romanoffs?” Vivian: “Okay, Fred Mertz, we'll go to the commissary.”
Tumblr media
Romanoffs was a classy Hollywood restaurant that was mentioned several times on “I Love Lucy.” Not surprisingly, it was also a favorite dining spot of the Arnaz's. Romanoffs became known for their chocolate souffles and Noodles Romanoff. The landmark eatery closed for good on New Year’s Eve 1962, although the famous noodles can still be found in your frozen food case thanks to Stouffers.
Vivian: “Let's eat. I'm starved.” Bill: “Okay, Ethel.” Vivian: “The name is Vivian.” Bill: “The name may be Vivian, but the appetite is Ethel.”
Desi and Mr. Hayden depart for their studio tour and Lucy recruits Vivian and Bill to help her with her plans to get Westinghouse appliances for her dressing room.
Vivian: “Is this a plot to put something over on Desi?” Lucy: “Well...” Bill: “As Betty Furness would say, 'You can be sure, if it's Lucy.'”
Tumblr media
Betty Furness (1916-94) was the product spokesperson for Westinghouse's television commercials. She would conclude with their slogan “You can be sure, if it's Westinghouse.”
Tumblr media
Desi conducts the first part of the studio tour via helicopter. They first fly over Desilu Gower, so named because it was located on Gower Avenue. They then hover over Desilu Motion Picture Center, a flew blocks away. This was where “I Love Lucy” was filmed from 1953.
Tumblr media
Then they fly to Desilu Culver, located in Culver City, also known as Forty Acres due to its size. This is where MGM made Gone with the Wind.  They fly over a destroyed Tara, twenty years after the film was made.
Tumblr media
Once they land, Vivian and Bill distract Desi while Lucy (disguised as a helicopter mechanic) approaches Mr. Hayden to order appliances. She doesn't get very far before Desi returns.
Tumblr media
Desi shows Hayden some painters working on the cave set for their “Song of Bernadette” starring Pier Angeli. The same set was later re-purposed for an episode of “Star Trek.” Vivian asks to speak to Desi privately, while Bill directs Mr. Hayden to talk to the 'man' on the ladder. Lucy is disguised as one of the painters. Once again, Lucy is interrupted when Desi returns.
Desi: (to Vivian) “Are you crazy or somethin'?” Bill: “What's the matter?” Desi: “Vivian wants to play Bernadette.” Bill: “That would be a miracle.”
Tumblr media
Next, they visit the Tijuana Street set that will be used for “Lucy Goes To Mexico.”  A director's voice shouts for quiet on the set, and they get to watch a scene being shot. This scene (where a zebra cart stalls traffic in the street) is directly from the “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.” Because it briefly features Lucille Ball, Bill Frawley, and Vivian Vance (who are supposedly standing nearby watching the scene being shot with Desi), the scene must have been shot prior to the filming of “Lucy Buys Westinghouse” and inserted later. Even Lucy can’t be in two places at once!
Tumblr media
Desi mentions that all the “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” Westinghouse commercials will be themed to tie into the show. For “Lucy Goes To Mexico” the theme is fiesta.
Tumblr media

Unbeknownst to them, Lucy is right behind them disguised as a window display mannequin in a sombrero and serape. Through the use of pantomime (Ball's favorite skill) she orders a 21” television from Mr. Hayden.

During a visit to the props department, William Frawley discovers a model he says is King Kong. In fact, it is actually from Mighty Joe Young (1949). Lucy is then discovered by Hayden hiding in a gorilla costume. Because Lucy's dialogue is crystal clear beneath the gorilla mask (and there is a slight delay in the gorilla's corresponding actions), it is likely that Ball was not actually inside the costume.

Back in Desi's office, he tells Hayden that actor George Murphy is vice president of public affairs for Desilu and will act as their Westinghouse good will ambassador. Murphy had done four films with Lucille Ball, including A Girl, A Guy, and a Gob (1941, above).

Desi discovers that Lucy's dressing room is crowded with new Westinghouse appliances including a pink roaster, a mint green blender, a 21” television set, and a powder blue electric dryer - with Lucy hiding inside it!
Desi: (to viewers) “Well, we'll see you in October, folks. If she's dry by then.”

Retired St. Louis police captain killed by looters during unrest, police say
ST. LOUIS — A retired St. Louis police officer was shot and killed early Tuesday by people who had broken into a pawn shop during unrest that followed a peaceful protest over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, police said.
David Dorn, 77, was found dead on the sidewalk in front of Lee’s Pawn & Jewelry. Police have not released details of what led to the shooting about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and no one has been arrested.
The shooting and theft at the pawn shop apparently was posted on Facebook Live, but the video has since been taken down. It came on a violent night in St. Louis, which saw four officers shot, officers pelted with rocks, and businesses burned and robbed.

Cities across the U.S. have seen protests and violence since Floyd died last week after an officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for several minutes even after the handcuffed black man stopped moving and pleading for air.
Dorn was a friend of the pawn shop’s owner and frequently checked on the business when alarms went off, his wife, Ann Marie Dorn, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Dorn served 38 years on the St. Louis police force before retiring in October 2007. He then became chief of Moline Acres, a small town north of St. Louis.
The Ethical Society of Police, which represents black officers in St. Louis, said in a news release that Dorn was “the type of brother that would’ve given his life to save them if he had to.”
Colonel John W. Hayden, Jr., a St. Louis police commissioner, called Dorn a “fine captain.”
“Many of us, the other officers, looked up to him,” Hayden said. ”“Was very well-liked, very pleasant. And his wife still works here. So a very sad time for our agency. We will honor him.”
State Rep. Rasheen Aldridge, D-St. Louis, told the Post-Dispatch that he watched to Facebook Live post before it was removed.
“Very traumatized right now,” he said about an hour after the shooting occurred. “I’m hurting.”
