Patriot Games is a more than serviceable thriller, perhaps a bit out of date when viewing it now, but still a very effective good against evil piece. The source material is so dense and intricate it was always going to be hard to condense that into a 2 hour movie, but I feel the makers manage to keep it fleshy whilst making the respective characters interesting and watchable. The acting on show is more than adequate, Harrison Ford is great in the role of Jack Ryan, he manages to portray him as a sensitive family man who can step up to the plate when things get ugly, and Anne Archer is solid enough as the wife and mother caught up in the web of nastiness unfolding. The baddies are led by the brooding Sean Bean who is a little under written, whilst Richard Harris is sadly underused. However, the action set pieces make their mark and thankfully we get a riveting...

thinking again about the haunting of cipher nine.... to be in Intelligence, hear of the first whispers of a rising star who skyrockets to the top, be there as the entire division watches their entire careers hinge on the outcome of this singular agent's survivability, continually watch as officers and lower rankees excitedly talk of their bold independence and the sheer status they've achieved in so short a time and then suddenly, they're gone from the face of the planet.
nobody who matters will say their name. eradication day eradicates the person cipher nine was from the records along with all other mention, and life goes on without a beat. there's an empty pedestal where they used to be. they'll be back, you might think, surely on some long mission of some sort.
they don't come back.

New OC(s) Idea(s)
Heads up, @theprissythumbelina , GRR Martin's at it again.
So, I was having my dinner and watching the latest Drachinifel, when suddenly he mentioned something that caught my eye; namely, signals intelligence.
Being an absolute fucking nerd, I've had and exercised far more interest in signals / military intelligence than is probably happy, but as topics go it's a hard one to apply in any writing. Worldbuilding-wise, though, I've had a lot of fun with it.
Anyhow, as usual, my answer to the question of how to show off some niche worldbuilding topic is to create an entirely new character and supporting cast around it. In this case, without even being certain which of my WIP's I'd like it them to exist in. [Though I am leaning towards Terror Immortal, or perhaps The Commonwealth Calls.]
The idea is, interspersed between 'normal' scenes / POVs covering the rest of the conflict, I'll cut to scenes lasting a few paragraphs at most which will feature our 'SIGINT POV' character going over some brief, message, piece of intel., etc., and explaining its significance. Importantly, whatever they're going over's going to have some relevance to the specific events I'm developing in the 'fighting' text, and in some cases a keen reader will recognise their intelligence feeding into the higher-up decisions which eventually trickle down to affect the lives and battles of the members of the cast doing the fighting and dying.
Over the course of the WIP / Narrative in question, it's my hope that the reader will gain a sort of trust in SIGINT guy and his observations, and indeed I hope gradual and drawn own exposition on his character and personality might even make them like him. All this serves as a lead up to a big ol' Plot Twist.tm that I'm thinking will play out towards the end of whatever specific 'Book' this character will debut in. Basically, they'll get it wrong. In some small way, in some crucial way, this most skilled analyst of intelligence will make the wrong call at the wrong time, and decisions will be made off of this evidence, and without even knowing it someone, somewhere will die because of this singular slip up.
Can you tell how much I like this guy already?

Analyzing An Ataxic Dysarthria Patient's Speech with Computer Vision and Audio Processing
Hey everyone, so as you know I have been doing research on patients like myself who have Ataxic Dysarthria and other neurological speech disorders related to diseases and conditions that affect the brain. I was analyzing this file
with a few programs that I have written.
The findings are very informative and I am excited that I am able to explain this to my Tumblr following as I feel it not only promotes awareness but provides an understanding of what we go through with Ataxic Dysarthria.
Analysis of the audio file with an Intonation Visualizer I built
Tumblr media
As you can tell this uses a heatmap to visualize loudness and softness of a speaker's voice. I used it to analyze the file and I found some really interesting and telling signs of Ataxic Dysarthria
Tumblr media
At 0-1 seconds it is mostly pretty quiet (which is normal because it is harder for patients with AD to start their speaking off. You can notice that around 1-3 seconds it gets louder, and then when she speaks its clearer and louder than the patients voice. However the AD makes the patients speech constantly rise and fall in loudness from around -3 to 0 decibels most of the audio when the patient is speaking. The variation though between 0 and -3 varies quickly though which is a common characteristic in AD
The combination of the constant rising and falling in loudness and intonation as well as problems getting sentences started is one of the things that makes it so hard for people to understand those with Ataxic Dysarthria.
The second method I used is using a line graph (plotted) that gives an example of the rate of speech and elongated syllables of the patient.
Tumblr media
As you can see I primarily used the Google Speech Recognition library to transcribe and count the syllables using Pyphen via "hyphenated" (elongated) words in the speech of the patient. This isn't the most effective method but it worked well for this example and here is the results plotted out using Matplotlib:
Tumblr media
As you can see when they started talking at first there was a rise from the softer speech, as the voice of the patient got louder, they were speaking faster (common for those with AD / and HD) my hypothesis (and personal experience) is that this is how we try to get our words out where we can be understood by "forcing" out words resulting in a rise and fall of syllables / rate of speech that we see at the first part. The other spikes typically happen when she speaks but there is another spike at the end which you can see as well when the patient tries to force more words out.
This research already indicates a pretty clear pattern what is going on in the patients speech. As they try to force out words, their speech gets faster and thus gets louder as they try to communicate.
I hope this has been informative for those who don't know much about speech pathology or neurological diseases. I know it's already showing a lot of exciting progress and I am continuing to develop scripts to further research on this subject so maybe we can all understand neurological speech disorders better.
As I said, I will be posting my research and findings as I go. Thank you for following me and keeping up with my posts!

🚨 DISINFO ALERT 🚨
This started out as a warning about botnets, but this post has become a warning against disinformation and how it spreads. If you click through the article, it now appears this never actually happened. It was given as an example of how smart devices could be used in this sort of attack, not something that actually went down. The story was updated a day after publication with Fortinet’s updated statement, and yet this post has 20K notes and growing.
So where did this come from???
With a little digging, it looks like the hypothetical was developed in 2016 by Fortinet employee Axelle Apvrille as part of an investigation into the IoT infection risk landscape. She presented her findings a VirusBulletin16, and you can read her full paper and findings on the feasibility of the attack vector here: Mobile Applications: a Backdoor into Internet of Things?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yes, Fortinet demonstrated that such an attack could be possible, but it didn’t happen in the wild.
Be careful out there kids, set up your multi-factor authentication, and don’t believe everything you read on this hellsite.
According to a recent report published by the Aargauer Zeitung (h/t Golem.de), around three million smart toothbrushes have been infected by hackers and enslaved into botnets.
The most cyberpunk thing on your dash today.
