Seattle Metamodernism Summit
I’ll be taking part in a reading/performance and panel at the Seattle Metamodernism Summit on September 10th, 2022 (live and online). Is my poetry “metamodernist”? How does my creative process, as well as that of other poets and songwriters, connect to the ideas of irony, sincerity, or even perhaps “ironesty”? That’s some of what we’ll be exploring in this panel conversation between artists, academics, and artist-academics. Come for the performances, stay for the heady ideas!
SEATTLE METAMODERNISM SUMMIT: Conversations on the Arts in an Age of Ironesty!
Dates: September 10: Live & Online;  September 11: Online Only
Live Location (Sept 10): Ballard Homestead, 6541 Jones Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98117, USA
Tickets: Options to watch online or attend in person; also an option to just attend the Songwriters and Poets Panel.
SONGWRITERS & POETS PANEL: Sept. 10th (5:00pm-6:30pm PST) Songwriters John Van Deusen (The Lonely Forest), Costello (Pretty Broken Things) and Greg Dember and poets Sierra Nelson, Antony Rowland and Scott Thurston and will perform songs and poems in the round while engaging in a curated discussion about how metamodern tropes factor into their creative work and their lives – how they 'respond' musically/poetically to e.g. dualities such as: irony/earnestness, skepticism/belief, fragmentation/unity.
More Info & Full Schedule: https://www.seattlemetamodernismsummit.com/
About the Seattle Metamodernism Summit:
What’s “metamodernism” and what do metamodern art and literature look like, sound like, feel like? Why are individuals and artists—even marketing and branding agents—increasingly drawn to it? Metamodernism is a name given to a sensibility emerging in the recent decades that grapples with our irony-soaked, context-dependent, everything-is-uncertain times by simultaneously embracing postmodern uncertainty and a sense of earnestness, even hope and commitment.  How exactly does the current moment inspire artists of all sorts to create in a different, what some call metamodern, register? The Seattle Metamodernism Summit is a public-friendly event taking place Sept 10-11. Part symposium and part performance, with time for discussion built in, researchers in metamodern arts, TV and film, architecture, literature, video games, marketing and more are coming together, presenting their ideas to each other and the general public at the Ballard Homestead on Saturday September 10. A live poet and songwriter panel includes locals Sierra Nelson, John Van Deusen (The Lonely Forest), Costello (Pretty Broken Things) and others. The public may attend the Summit in person or online (Zoom) on Sept 10th. The event continues in online only format on Sept 11th. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit our website at SeattleMetamodernismSummit.com.
Event sponsored by AHRC Metamodernism Research Network, What is Metamodern? and Abbey Arts.

John Van Deusen of The Lonely Forest, 2014
Bumbershoot, Seattle
Sometimes during an intense show; and The Lonely Forest’s final show was certainly intense, I like to find these little introspective moments of calm. I just managed to find John behind the mic stand, keyboard, and other band members and was able to capture this moment. What’s he thinking there? I love shots that make you ask what the subject is thinking.

Can you make a playlist for yearning? I always really like your music!
thanks, sorry about your bad taste
here’s something i slammed together. i absolutely am not an expert on yearning music- a lot of the time the tunes i yearn to are linked to a specific person for some dumb reason that you couldn’t possibly get into. like, i get all mopey listening to an otherwise happy song because i know they like it or i was obsessed with it when i went on a 25-hour greyhound ride to see them for the first time so i put it on repeat a lot. i tried to leave most of those out of here. it’s sort of a mix of “aw boo i want something” and “hey nice i have something to want that’s dope” as well as a mix of reasons to yearn. listen to it on shuffle, order doesn’t mean anything, and i reserve the right to add to it later if i think of anything
tracklist- finding you- kesha // if the world was ending- jp saxe and julia michaels// staring at the sun- mika // departures- grace petrie // wrestlemania viii- martha // everybody knows- pronoun // i crush everything- jonathan coulton // hello i’m right here- tegan and sara // home to me- devil and the deep blue sea // coldwaterproofjacket- grace petrie // bamboo plants- ryan cassata // wish you were gay- claud // dancing on my own- robyn // paul- big thief // whatever makes you mine- john van deusen // nobody- mitski // plum- troye sivan // things still left to say- mal blum // northbound- grace petrie

Find A Song that was written as a response to loneliness and fear
John Van Deusen - Whatever Makes You Mine
Alone at a lodge in the Cascade Mountains, right at the heart of Bigfoot territory, I kept feeling like some big hairy creature was watching me sleep. I was frightened by the eerie creaks and noises while my mind obsessed over dark Sasquatch legends.
I wrote “Whatever Makes You Mine” in the dead of night as a response to my loneliness and fear; my desire to be with someone (anyone), was overwhelming.
This song was produced by Andy D. Park at Ranchland Studios in Cisco, TX. We used the skeleton of my lodge demo and added and subtracted until we found what we wanted sonically. The drums were played by my good friend Braydn Krueger, whose aggression and energy really helped kick the song into high gear.
Recording in the middle of nowhere, hanging out and watching scary movies was a dream that suited this track perfectly. (press release)

1, 11, 14, 18?
mmmm this one's hard. my top song was gentle and lowly by joyful noise, but i think the one that did the most for me was sparrow and the seed by john van deusen. that or words to build a life on by mike crawford and his secret siblings.
11. go to japan (lol unlikely). more realistically, I think just keep meal prepping lunches
14. aaaa that's also hard!! i might say cloud atlas by david mitchell. or never let me go by kazuo ishiguro. or jayber crow by wendell berry. it was a really good reading year!
18. this year i did be eating everything. i had actual real deal ramen in japan, and misokatsu (a nagoya speciality). i think the one i'll choose though was mine and a friend's birthday dinner. the people there were five of the folks i love most in the world and it was holy and perfect and wonderful. also i had coconut curry so that was nice too. <3

Washed Up Emo – #106 - John Van Deusen (The Lonely Forest)
Washed Up Emo – #106 – John Van Deusen (The Lonely Forest)
John Van Deusen’s last band The Lonely Forest went on indefinite hiatus in 2014. I’d been waiting to see what one of my favorite vocalists was going to do. Patiently I wanted and thankfully in June, John released a new solo album. http://www.buzzsprout.com/4504/543868-106-john-van-deusen-the-lonely-forest.mp3
