THE INDICATOR OF PRAYER
One of my favorite stories on prayer, from one of my favorite authors...enjoy.
“It is not your business to succeed but to do right: when you have done so, the rest lies with God.” ~ C. S. Lewis
One of my favorite adventures in prayer involves Doug Coe, who has a ministry in Washington, D.C. that mostly involves people in politics and statecraft.
Doug became acquainted with Bob, an insurance salesman who was completely unconnected with any government circles. Bob became a Christian and began to meet with Doug to learn about his new faith. One day, Bob came in all excited about a statement in the Bible where Jesus says, “Ask whatever you will in my name, and you shall receive it.” “Is that really true?” Bob demanded. Doug explained, “Well, it’s not a blank check. You have to take it in context of the teachings of the whole Scripture on prayer. But yes—it really is true. Jesus really does answer prayer.” “Great!” Bob said. “Then I gotta start praying for something. I think I’ll pray for Africa.” “That’s kind of a broad target. Why don’t you narrow it down to one country?” Doug advised. “All right. I’ll pray for Kenya.” “Do you know anyone in Kenya?” Doug asked. “No.” “Ever been to Kenya?” “No.” Bob just wanted to pray for Kenya.
So, Doug made an unusual arrangement. He challenged Bob to pray every day for six months for Kenya. If Bob would do that and nothing extraordinary happened, Doug would pay him five hundred dollars. But if something remarkable did happen, Bob would pay Doug five hundred dollars. Bob began to pray, and for a long while nothing happened. Then one night he was at a dinner in Washington. The people around the table explained what they did for a living. One woman said she helped run an orphanage in Kenya—the largest of its kind. “You’re obviously very interested in my country,” the woman said to Bob, overwhelmed by his sudden barrage of questions. “You’ve been to Kenya before?” “No.” “You know someone in Kenya?” “No.” “Then how do you happen to be so curious?” “Well, someone is kind of paying me five hundred dollars to pray. . ..” She asked Bob if he would like to come visit Kenya and tour the orphanage. Bob was so eager to go, he would have left that very night if he could.
When Bob arrived in Kenya, he was appalled by the poverty and the lack of basic health care. Upon returning to Washington, he couldn’t get this place out of his mind. He began to write to large pharmaceutical companies, describing to them the vast need he had seen. He reminded them that every year they would throw away large amounts of medical supplies that went unsold. “Why not send them to this place in Kenya?” he asked. This orphanage received more than a million dollars’ worth of medical supplies.
The woman called Bob up and said, “Bob, this is amazing! We’ve had the most phenomenal gifts because of the letters you wrote. We would like to fly you back over and have a big party. Will you come?” So, Bob flew back to Kenya. While he was there, the president of Kenya came to the celebration, because it was the largest orphanage in the country, and offered to take Bob on a tour of Nairobi, the capital city. In the course of the tour, they saw a prison. Bob asked about a group of prisoners there. “They’re political prisoners,” he was told. “That’s a bad idea,” Bob said brightly. “You should let them out.” Bob finished the tour and flew back home.
Sometime later, Bob received a phone call from the State Department of the United States government: “Is this Bob?” “Yes.” “Were you recently in Kenya?” “Yes.” “Did you make any statements to the president about political prisoners?” “Yes.” “What did you say?” “I told him he should let them out.” And he did.
How about you?
What are you praying for? Give it six months. I won’t promise you five hundred dollars, but I will give you a refund on the cost of this book. To the contrary, if something extraordinary does happen, you have to write and tell me about it.
‘Water-Walking’ ~ Joh Ortberg
‘And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.’ ~John 14: 13-14

Reading for Aug 26th
Ezekial 39
Ezekiel 39:23-24
I’m sure you’ve heard some variation of the phrase “learn from the mistakes of others” at some point in your life. Regardless if you claim to believe in the God of the Bible or the stories therein, I feel it’s fair to say that the library of Scripture has more than a handful of “mistakes” we’d be wise to learn from.
For today, inspired by our reading, let’s just use “not taking the word or commands of the Lord seriously” for example. Could be fun.
To my knowledge, no one is ever really, really excited to be told what to do, how to live or how to speak. So for a large group of people, they simply don’t accept corrections, suggestions or commands of anyone or anything other than themselves and their “gut”.
There’s a difference between going through a season of “unwillingness” (for a number of reasons), and a blatant disobedience of authority and wisdom. As I said yesterday, guilty as charged. By itself, this is a worrisome possibility for anyone in any stage of life. For the people of God, those who claim faith in him, the possibility/reality is catastrophic.
The birth and revolution of Christ Jesus is the pinnacle of the biblical narrative. I believe it was Dallas Willard who once said, “The revolution of Jesus is the revolution of character.” If we, as professing followers of Jesus, are not constantly aware (or close to it) that a life with and in Christ is about the quality of our character, the people we are and are becoming (in contrast to Christ), we live on shaky ground.
Let us never forget that those who claim faith in Christ have become a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:16–17).
Let us, also, never forget that the “new creation” mentioned, is a very specific quality of person, a way of being. A person who puts to death the desires and sins of the flesh. A reflection of the personhood of Jesus.
As followers of Jesus, we have the library of Scripture as a guide to human flourishing this side of Heaven. The book of James states let us never settle for being “hearers” of the Word only, but just as well “doers” of the Word (James 1:22-26 PAR).
I close today with a quote.
“To be filled with knowledge about the Bible, but to be unwashed by it, is worse than not knowing it at all.” - John Ortberg

John Ortberg.

DIVINE PROVISION
DIVINE PROVISION
Exodus 16:4

We see God’s hand of provision at work in the lives of His people in various ways throughout the scriptures, both naturally and supernaturally. Apostle Paul affirms God’s divine provision from personal experience and evidence in Philippians 4:19, stating that God can supply all our needs (providing us with anything and everything we need) according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus, not according to our wages, strengths, network, or labour.
God provides for the daily needs of His people. When we struggle, it’s usually because of greed and disobedience, which lead to problems in distribution. 2 Peter 1:3-4 says, “As we know Jesus better, his divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life.” It’s God’s divine power that gives us divine provision as He provides resources from His own character to those who seek Him.
Apart from the scriptural evidence of God’s divine provisions, notable men and women of God have had natural, physical, and supernatural experiences of God’s divine provisions. Here are some of my favourites to encourage us:
·     God’s provision is always enough.” – Joyce Meyer
·     God’s provision is always on time.” – Charles Spurgeon
·     God’s provision is always perfect.” – David Jeremiah
·     God’s provision is always good.” – Max Lucado
·     God’s provision is always sufficient.” – Charles Stanley
·     God’s provision is never late.” – Beth Moore
·     God’s provision is always dependable.” – Corrie ten Boom
·     God’s provision is always timely.” – John Piper
·     God’s provision is always abundant.” – Rick Warren
·     God’s provision is always more than enough.” – Craig Groeschel
·     God’s provision is always sufficient for His people.” – Charles Stanley
·     God’s provision is always according to His perfect will.” – Ravi Zacharias
·     God’s provision is always greater than our needs.” – Henry Blackaby
·     God’s provision is always enough to meet our needs.” – David Platt
·     God’s provision is always for our benefit.” – Francis Chan
·     God’s provision is always more than we expect.” – John Ortberg
·     God’s provision is always in His perfect timing.” – Andy Stanley
·     God’s provision is always a source of joy.” – T.D. Jakes
·     God’s provision is always a blessing.” – Kay Arthur
·     God’s provision is always a sign of His love.” – Billy Graham
·     God’s provision is always for our good.” – Tony Evans
·     God’s provision is always more than enough.” – Tim Keller
·     God’s provision is always an answer to prayer.” – Charles Finney
·     God’s provision is always beyond our expectations.” – John MacArthur
·     God’s provision is always according to His purpose.” – A.W. Tozer
·     God’s provision is always better than we think.” – Max Lucado
·     God’s provision is always for our spiritual growth.” – Martin Luther
·     God’s provision is always an expression of His grace.” – John Piper
·     God’s provision is always available to us.” – Beth Moore
Whatever we need is in God’s word, and God can give us all things. As stated in James 1:17, all the good and perfect gifts we have come from the Lord and no one else. God’s character never changes. Psalm 84:11 states that God, in all His magnanimous grace, would never withhold anything from His children, at least the upright ones. For those who trust God and walk in uprightness, the Lord will not withhold any good thing that He has purposed for us, promised us, or laid up for us in covenant. This includes spiritual provisions, no spiritual good thing appertaining to life and godliness, and no temporal blessing that is good for us. He will never deny us any good thing we ask of Him, nor will He withdraw any good thing He has bestowed on us. After all, God’s gifts are irrevocable according to Romans 11:29. So trust that all your need for the new year will be divinely provided.
Prayer: God my provider, thank you for the confident assurance that whatever I need will be provided when needed, and more than I deserve or expect. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Shalom

Jesus enlightenment (2)
Word for Today written by Bob and Debby Gass
Monday 18th November 2024
'Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came.' 1 Corinthians 8:6 NIV
John Ortberg writes:
'In 1780 a Jesus-follower in Great Britain named Robert Raikes could not stand the cycle of poverty and ignorance that was destroying little children, a whole generation. He said, "The world marches forward on the feet of little children." So he took children who had to work six days a week in squalor. Sunday was their free day. He said, "I'm going to start a school for free to teach them to read and write and learn about God." He did, and he called it Sunday school. Within fifty years, there were 1.5 million children being taught by 160,000 volunteer teachers who had a vision for the education of a generation. Sunday school was not a privatised, optional programme for church children. It was one of the great educational volunteer triumphs of the world. The alphabet of the Slavic peoples is called Cyrillic. It was named for Saint Cyril, who was a missionary to the Slavs and discovered they had no written alphabet. Thus he created one for them so they would be able to read about Jesus in their own language...A Methodist missionary, Frank Laubach, cited an extraordinary encounter with God about a century ago that put him on a mission to lift the world out of ignorance. He began a worldwide literacy movement. The phrase "Each one teach one" flows out of the extraordinary life of this man... He became known as "the apostle to the illiterates".'
