Star Trek series rated by Canadianness!
The Original Series - Shatner's from Montreal; Doohan's from Vancouver; John Collicos (the guy who played Kor, the first Klingon) is from somewhere in Canada; and, um...yeah. 4/10
The Next Generation - So, in the episode "Lower Decks", Lavelle tries to bond with Riker over being from Canada (he's actually from Alaska). Also, Matt Frewer and Saul Rubinek are in episodes. 2/10
Deep Space Nine - I was going to rate this one pretty low since it has pretty much only Nicole deBoer and that one scene where Eddington mentions having a "lucky loonie" to go on, but then I realised that the series was literally premised on a brutal colonial project aimed at mineral extraction, and that's like...the *most* Canadian thing. 7/10
Voyager - WTH is this? No Canadians; nothing particularly Canadian. 0/10
Enterprise - Hoshi Sato wants to take leave in Canada after getting tortured with heat. 1/10
Discovery - Points for being filmed in Canada, and most of the extras and personality-less bridge bunnies being played by Canadians (though points off because the one Discovery novel that I've read keeps emphasizing that Detmer, who has the most personality out of all of them, is from Düsseldorf). Callum Keith Rennie's in the last season. 4/10
Picard - um...Alison Pill is there! 1/10
Lower Decks - Let's see...two of the ships have been named the Vancouver and the Toronto. The plot with Barb Brinson is riffing on having an imaginary girlfriend in Canada (one of our most famous exports). Also, I know this isn't canon, but the comics are done by Ryan North, which has to count for something. 4/10
Prodigy - Man, this series doesn't even air in Canada! -1/10
Strange New Worlds - Filmed in Toronto: actually *set* in Toronto in one episode; retroactively makes Khan Canadian (Khanadian?) which...sure. I'll accept that. Points for casting Edmonton's Bruce Horak as Hemmer, who comes from an ice planet and, as an Aenar, has a generally laid-back, pacifistic attitude towards life (which I think is how a lot of Canadians like to think of themselves); points off for killing him off 9 episodes into the first season. 9/10

Lots of professions have their own organizations, so why not fortune tellers? Meeting aboard the SS Peter Stuyvesant at its Manhattan pier on July 30, 1936, these fortune tellers formed a National Organization. From left, seated: Topsy LaVelle, vice president; Helen A. Perota aka "Gypsy Lee;" Anna Craig, secretary; and Florence Ward. Seers standing in the background are unidentified.

top books of 2023
City of Night by John Rechy. this one was a really good novel about being gay like what else to say. recommend one with a foreward and afterward by the author bc there's good stuff there; the book itself is semi-autobiographical.
Bastard Out Of Carolina by Dorothy Allison. its a semi-autobiographical novel about child abuse and the relationship between her and her mom. i cried really hard.
Cleanness by Garth Greenwell. another semi-autobiographical one and its got good chapters about being gay and kinky.
Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca. look, it was good.
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. CRIED.
The Sluts by Dennis Cooper. kind of started me on the list of books i read over the rest of the year. i read it like this the whole time: :0
The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor Lavelle. in terms of cosmic horror, one of the best recents ive read. also just a very sad story.
Tell Me I'm Worthless by Alison Rumfitt. i really liked the prose which is such a relief with a recent debut novel. and the story was really good.
Hellblazer Volume 1 by James Delano. i had to add another and like. vol 1 isnt my favorite hellblazer but its a good comic.
Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova. most recent read. it goes in a very different direction than what i imagined, and i like it better for it. what's better than also being gay and kink.
@twinkubus so you will see. if anyone else wants to do this pls do and tag me! i need book recs

There was no one, and I mean no one in the world, funnier. But he was also a good family man, a devoted father. He's never had an enemy in his life, until the end, obviously.
He met a girl on a dating site, I think it was. It was funny, because he sort of went off the radar a little bit.
I was so close to him, and I didn't see this woman until I got a phone call one morning, telling me to come down to his house, he's dead. Some woman had assaulted him with a plate and left him to bleed to death.
I couldn't believe that that actually happened to him without us seeing it. It was just unreal that we never knew what was going on in his life.
You look back and you think, "Yeah, the signs were there," but we were not educated enough to spot them signs like we are now.
Now, through the Paul Lavelle Foundation, if anyone is in trouble, we know where to point them to.
When it was set up, it was set up with the markings of to save one life, to raise awareness of signs that no one ever seen.
But to also support males who are experiencing domestic abuse or are survivors of domestic abuse.
For me, it was the darkest period of my life to date. Significant physical abuse, emotional abuse.
Probably for a good year to 18 months, I didn't know it was domestic abuse. Paul Lavelle Foundation gradually showed me that there was going to be a way out of it, there was going to be life afterwards.
They gave me a voice.
It's got me out doing things that I wouldn't have done previously.
Swimming challenges, bike challenges, running events, to a point of where we probably got nearly 200 members.
It's felt like a group of friends.
This is my group, this is my team and where I belong.
It's that magic moment when you get three or four of you together in the hub and you go, "It's not just me."
Speak out.
This is the way forward. This is what you've got to do.
You can't take the silent option.
If we'd have known it then, he'd have still been alive. Simple as that.
Paul Lavelle, 50, was attacked by his abusive partner Sarah Lewis in 2017 who then left him to bleed to death - in January 2018 she was jailed for seven and a half years
By: Beth Lindop and Alahna Kindred
Published: May 19, 2022
A man whose girlfriend used a broken dinner plate to kill him had "stayed silent" about the abuse he was suffering at home, his devastated pals have said.
Paul Lavelle, 50, was attacked by his partner Sarah Lewis with a jagged shard of a broken dinner plate during a drunken dispute at his Birkenhead home in May 2017.
Lewis left Mr Lavelle to slowly bleed to death and was jailed for seven and a half years in January 2018.
Paul's friend set up the Paul Lavelle Foundation after his death to help encourage more men to speak about their experiences of domestic abuse.
Paul Gladwell, a co-founder, told the Liverpool ECHO: “We lost our friend.
"He was a brilliant person and we wanted to keep his memory alive but also, we asked the question as to why he didn’t tell us what was going on.
"We found out later on that it wasn’t an isolated incident, so we started wanting to raise awareness and getting men to speak out about being abused.
"Eventually we set up a service where we’re helping men come out and speak about their problems and supporting them through court cases.
"We’re helping men not to choose the silent option, which is what Paul chose."
The foundation provides many vital services including Healthy Relationship Education workshops in schools and community sports and well-being groups.
In August 2019, members of the foundation cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats.
Their next challenge will see them ride from Oxton to The Battlefields of the Somme in France.
The plan is to cycle the 440-mile route over four days, with the money raised being split between the foundation and Alder Hey children’s hospital. And Paul believes that his late friend would be delighted to know that so much good is being done on his behalf.
He added: “Paul would be really made up. So much of what we do is doing wonders for so many people in Paul’s name. There could be no better tribute to him.
“One in three victims of domestic abuse are men and I don’t think many people know that. We didn’t ourselves until it was on our doorsteps.”
Paul previously told the ECHO how he met his friend in 1988 when he was 19 and they had gone on holidays to Spain together as well as Everton matches.
He said: "He was comedy gold and a very good mate who would always be there for you if you needed it.
"He met his partner on online dating - it was Plentyoffish.com but while he was with her I think I must've seen him twice."
He added that Mr Lavelle started to distance himself from the group.
He said: "He did use to go to the game - and then that stopped. He stopped going for a pint on a Sunday afternoon.
"He didn't turn up to a wedding a couple of months previously. We used to text him and he wouldn't get back to us.
"The night that it happened he should've been at a 40th party to which he was invited to."
He added: "And now you look back after it happened all of his friends had heard little things and when you put it all together - nobody knew."

Coin Coin Chapter Five: In the garden… is the latest instalment in composer, improviser, saxophonist, bandleader and visual artist Matana Roberts’ visionary project exploring African-American history through ancestry, archive and place. Weaving together elements of jazz, avant-garde composition, folk and spoken word, Roberts tells the story of a woman in their ancestral line, who died following complications from an illegal abortion. At a time when reproductive rights are under attack, her story takes on new resonance. “I wanted to talk about this issue, but in a way where she gets some sense of liberation,” Roberts explains. By unpacking family stories and conducting extensive research in US public archives, Roberts has created a rounded portrait of a woman who is, as their lyrics put it, “electric, alive, spirited, fire and free.” Each part of Coin Coin explores radically different musical settings, from the free jazz and post-rock eruptions of Chapter One to the solo noise collage of Chapter Three. Featuring a new ensemble steeped in jazz, improvisation, new music and avant-rock, helping to expand the project’s existing sonic palette, Chapter Five is no exception. Roberts is joined by fellow alto saxophonist Darius Jones, violinist Mazz Swift (Silkroad Ensemble, D’Angelo), bass clarinettist Stuart Bogie (TV On The Radio, Antibalas), alto clarinettist Matt Lavelle (Eye Contact, Sumari), pianist Cory Smythe (Ingrid Laubrock, Anthony Braxton), vocalist/actor Gitanjali Jain and percussionists Ryan Sawyer (Thurston Moore, Nate Wooley) and Mike Pride (Pulverize The Sound, MDC). The late, great trumpeter jaimie branch, who was due to play on the album, receives a credit for “courage”. The album is produced by TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone, who also contributes synths. As a composer, Roberts draws upon strategies associated with the post-war avant-garde, including John Cage and Fluxus member Benjamin Patterson’s conceptual approaches to scoring and performance. The immersive work of Maryanne Amacher, in which “sound and the body almost collaborate” is another key influence. “That is the foundation for me of the Coin Coin work,” they explain. “It’s not just the alto saxophone as an instrument placed in the jazz canon, it's the alto saxophone as an instrument that can be utilised to affect the body.” Listeners will be struck by Roberts’ ability to mould diverse sounds into a cohesive whole. The spoken word passages are accompanied by driving modal jazz on “how prophetic”, minimalist synth loops on “enthralled not by her curious blend” and cantering folk forms on “(a)way is not an option”. These are interspersed with instrumental pieces that range from avant-garde abstraction and squalling free jazz, to solo saxophone reflections and Mississippi fife and drums blues. There’s a further evocation of American roots music in the powerful group vocal arrangement of “but I never heard a sound so long”, adapted by Roberts from the plantation lullaby “All The Pretty Horses.” While this new chapter of Coin Coin focusses on a female-identified protagonist, others haven’t (Chapter Three being from the perspective of a male ancestor) and Roberts intends for future chapters to continue to cover the breadth of the gender spectrum, as well as their Native American heritage. “I'm proud that people say that the Coin Coin work speaks of a woman's story. But I want to make sure that it retains its inclusivity, because what we look like is not always what you see.” This reflects Roberts’ own experiences as a queer person of colour. For the remaining chapters of Coin Coin, Roberts will continue exploring identity and ancestry. “Expect it to keep heading towards a liberation of the human spirit.”
