hello, your blog's vibes are absolutely impeccable! I was wondering if you could recommend me some nonfiction reading on eroticism, religion or fear? I'd love to read about any of these topics, but I never really know where to start looking for good theory books or essays, so I usually end up reading fiction instead. any nonfiction recs would be deeply appreciated (and on other topics too if you have particular favorites). have a nice day!
hello! thank you for the kind words♡
hm! some reading might be: - Erotism: Death and Sensuality + Visions of Excess, Bataille - Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty & Venus in Furs, Deleuze - The Sadeian Woman: And the Ideology of Pornography, Angela Carter - Hurts So Good: The Science and Culture of Pain on Purpose, Leigh Cowart - Eros the Bittersweet, Anne Carson - A Lover's Discourse, Roland Barthes - Uses of the Erotic, Audre Lorde - A Literate Passion: Letters of Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller, 1932-1953 - Foucault's Histor[ies] of Sexuality - Being and Nothingness, Sartre - The Argonauts, Maggie Nelson - Aesthetic Sexuality: A Literary History of Sadomasochism, Romana Byrne - Pleasure Principles: An Interview with Carmen Maria Machado - "The Aesthetics of Fear", Joyce Carol Oates - Recreational Terror: Women and the Pleasures of Horror Film Viewing, Isabel Cristina Pinedo - "On Fear", Mary Ruefle - "In Search of Fear", Philippe Petit - Female Masochism in Film: Sexuality, Ethics and Aesthetics, Ruth Mcphee - Powers of Horror, Julia Kristeva - Hélène Cixous' Stigmata (i am thinking esp of "Love of the Wolf") - Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis - anything from Caroline Walker Bynum.... Wonderful Blood, Fragmentation and Redemption, Holy Feast and Holy Fast - excerpts of Letter From a Region in my Mind, James Baldwin - Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Nietzsche (re: Christian morality, death of God) - Waiting for God, Simone Weil - The Myth of Sisyphus, Albert Camus - Modern Man in Search of a Soul, Carl Jung - "The Genesis of Blame", Anne Enright
do know as well that Lapham's Quarterly has issues dedicated entirely to these subjects you've mentioned: eros, religion, fear ! there's also this wonderful ask from @rotgospels on biblical horror theory
other non-fic i will always rec: - "On Self-Respect", Joan Didion - Illness as Metaphor + Regarding the Pain of Others, Susan Sontag - The Art of Cruelty: A Reckoning, Maggie Nelson - "The Laugh of the Medusa", Hélène Cixous - Ways of Seeing, John Berger - The Faraway Nearby, Rebecca Solnit - The Body in Pain, Elaine Scarry some non-fic things i've read lately: - "Mary Shelley's Obsession with the Cemetery", Bess Lovejoy - "Horror Lives in the Body", Megan Pillow - "The Cruel Myth of the Suffering Artist", Patrick Nathan - "The Rub of Rough Sex", Chelsea G. every single book I read in 2022. all 129 of them.
jesus christ
let's start with the best of the best; everything else will get listed beneath the read more because I'm not an animal. even just picking out my favorites is honestly probably going to get pretty lengthy, even though I'm trying to keep the synopses short.
batmanisagatewaydrug's noteworthy books of 2022
Complaint! (Sara Ahmed, 2021) - necessary for anyone doing diversity work in higher education, tbh
America is Not the Heart (Elaine Castillo, 2018) - achingly gorgeous novel of heartbreak and healing.
The School for Good Mothers (Jessamine Chan, 2022) - honestly? I feel very good calling this my favorite book of the entire year. sensitive, smart, chilling.
Black Feminist Thought (Patricia Hill Collins, 1990) - truly ashamed to say I didn't read this sooner. Collins' clear-eyed analysis remains crazily spot-on 30+ years later.
Hurts So Good: The Science and Pleasure of Pain on Purpose (Leigh Cowart, 2021) - I read this book so early in 2022 and literally have not stopped thinking about it since.
Batman: King Tut's Tomb (Nunzio DeFillippis, Christina Weir, José Luis García-López, and Kevin Nowlan, 2009) - dare I say the most fun I had with a comic all year.
You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty (Akwaeke Emezi, 2022) - a romance unlike any other. queer, fun, sexy, bold as hell, and joyfully life-affirming.
The Dangers of Smoking in Bed (Mariana Enríquez, trans. Megan McDowell, 2021) - DELICIOUSLY creepy short stories that will lurk in your brain forever.
Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century (Kim Fu, 2022) - if a more perfect short story collection exists I am yet to find it.
The World We Make (N.K. Jemisin, 2022) - I normally hesitate to include sequels on a list like this, but god DAMN Jemisin is the queen of modern spec fic for a reason.
We Do This 'Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice (Mariame Kaba, edited by Tamara K. Nopper, 2021) - excellent collection of Kaba's abolitionist writings, drawing on years of organizing experience and wisdom.
Jade City (Fonda Lee, 2017) - look out! new favorite doorstopper fantasy series alert!
Priestdaddy (Patricia Lockwood, 2017) - about the best damn memoir I've ever read. heartbreaking and hysterical in turns, poetry the whole way through.
Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory (Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, 1996 and 1999) - it's always so exciting when something much-hyped lives up to the hype in every way. Batman at his grim and moody Batmaniest with a Gotham that’s deliciously bleak.
Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel, 2014) - I didn't think I'd like this book much at all, then ended up proposing on the second date. oops!
I'm Glad My Mom Died (Jennette McCurdy, 2022) - you will also be glad McCurdy's mom died, and also experience every other known human emotion along the way.
Kaikeyi (Vaishnavi Patel, 2022) - SPLENDID mythology retelling + political fantasy.
My Body (Emily Ratajkowski, 2022) - haunting haunting haunting personal essays about Ratajkowski's life as a model and subsequent alienation from her own body.
Batman: Bruce Wayne, Murderer? (Greg Rucka et al, 2002) - genuinely what can I say I'm a messy bitch and I love when the Bats are having a terrible time.
The Batman Adventures Vol. 2 #1-17 (created by Dan Slott, Ty Templeton, Rick Burchett, Terry Beatty, and Bruce Timm, 2003) - a continuation of the Batman: The Animated Series universe that frankly just fucking rules.
Little Rabbit (Alyssa Songsiridej, 2022) - a potent and erotic adult coming of age story.
The Right to Sex: Feminism in the Twenty-First Century (Amia Srinivasan, 2021) - thorny, difficult, vital essays.
Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia (Sabrina Strings, 2019) - jaw-droppingly thorough research into the role of fatpobia played and plays in the project of race-making.
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (Ocean Vuong, 2019) - yeah so it turns out no one was REMOTELY exaggerating. Vuong really is That Good.
Hench (Natalie Zina Walschots, 2020) - wild fun with a ruthless protagonist and her sex villainous beetle man boss; what more could you ask for?
Love Your Asian Body: AIDS Activism in Los Angeles (Eric C. Wat, 2021) - learning about queer history makes me feel like I’m holding something so vibrant and fragile and precious right in my little queer hand. this book is an emotional journey in such a shining way.
Never Have I Ever (Isabel Yap, 2021) - EXCITING short story collection centered on girls having Just The Weirdest Time.
and everybody else:

Light From Uncommon Stars (Ryka Aoki, 2021)
Our Wives Under the Sea (Julia Armfield, 2022)
A Tiny Upward Shove (Melissa Chadburn, 2022)

La série Juste Cause sera écrite par Christy Hall (I Am Not Okay With This). Aucune date pour le moment.

School Days
Back before the pandemic closure, we were inspecting one of the films we received from the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School (RGNS), a film made about the school in 1952 by the late John F. Cowart, a talented Atlanta filmmaker who had won several cinematography awards and later had a long career as a cameraman for WAGA-TV and WETV (now WPBA). Perhaps the school administrators had seen his ad in the newspaper:
Tumblr media
and were inspired to contact him to make a film of their school. No matter how it happened, we are delighted that the film has survived in very good condition.

You can watch the film here:  https://bmac.libs.uga.edu/pawtucket2/index.php/Detail/objects/362958
Cowart made the film using his Auricon Cine-Voice camera. The kit for this camera includes a microphone and a turntable so you can capture natural sound or music from an LP playing directly into the soundtrack. This was a real boon for filmmakers.
While looking for more information on Mr. Cowart, we ran across mention of an earlier film made for another north Georgia mountains school, the Tallulah Falls School (TFS), by members of the Amateur Movie Makers of Atlanta club.
Articles in the Atlanta Constitution mention in May 1950 that Bob Stanley of the Atlanta club offered to make a film for the TFS, which is just down the road from RGNS.  The money to make the Tallulah Falls School film was donated by a patron of the school, and the amateur movie club members involved in production were Bob Stanley, Gates Dunn, and Dr. Hoyt Simpson (a dentist). The film was to show the students in their daily tasks over the course of the school year,  making handicrafts, studying in the classroom, cooking, and working on the farm, with the final scenes being of graduation.
A quick email to TFS led to the office of the President of the school who was excited by these articles and our interest. He located that film as well as another film about the school produced by the Protestant Radio and Television Center in 1959 (we also preserve the PRTVC archives). That second film is titled “The Light in the Mountains” and both films have been donated to us. Watch them here: https://bmac.libs.uga.edu/pawtucket2/index.php/Detail/objects/362995  (1950)
and here:  https://bmac.libs.uga.edu/pawtucket2/index.php/Detail/objects/362994  (1961).
We are so pleased to have more film coverage of an important part of the state of Georgia, the beautiful mountains to our north, and to preserve them for decades to come.

What are some good books on sex and sexuality that you would recommend? It could be from any genre on any topic. I’m a big reader (and big virgin) and my best friend was given little to no sex ed growing up, so I’m looking for the both of us.
oh shit my only two strong suits, together in one question!
a list of titles I recommend organized in no particular order except by authors' last names:
Sexuality: A Graphic Guide by Meg-John Barker and Jules Scheele
Virgin: The Untouched History by Hanne Blank
Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex by Angela Chen
Hurts So Good: The Science and Pleasure of Pain on Purpose by Leigh Cowart (not strictly about just sex but a very interesting study of desire and consensual pain)
Unscrewed: Women, Sex, Power, and How to Stop Letting the System Screw Us All by Jaclyn Friedman
The Sex Myth by Rachel Hills
A Curious History of Sex by Kate Lister
Come as You Are by Emily Nagoski (best suited for cis women I've found)
Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers' Rights by Molly Smith and Juno Mac
The Right to Sex: Feminism in the Twenty-First Century by Amia Srinivasan
Black Women, Black Love by Dianne M. Stewart (truly one of the most underrated books about sex and intimacy I've ever read)
The Trouble With Normal: Sex, Politics, and the Ethics of Queer Life by Michael Warner
