"Belgravia" Saga Re-Watch
I did a recent re-watch of both "Belgravia" and "Belgravia: Next Chapter". I believe I had enjoyed and appreciated both even more than I did the first time. And I saw so many clues in the first series that set up the situation that had developed between Frederick, James and their parents - Susan and Oliver Trenchard. I never thought a B-plot involving Susan's affair with John Bellasis would lead to such interesting family turmoil.

REV. JAMES TRENCHARD: Would you like me to leave?
FREDERICK TRENCHARD: No.
JOHN BELLASIS: Ah. Who's this?
FREDERICK TRENCHARD: My brother. Reverend James Trenchard.
JOHN BELLASIS: James... James, you changed the game, young man. The one who wasn't meant to be. I've been thinking about your mother. I wasn't especially nice to her. But then, she wasn't especially nice. I've been wondering if she used me for the stud that I am. Trenchard had failed her. She wanted her child. I wonder if he even fathered you.
REV. JAMES TRENCHARD(exhales): It's all right.
FREDERICK TRENCHARD: Where did you meet our mother?
JOHN BALLASIS: Good old Belgravia...........
REV. JAMES TRENCHARD: Freddie... We don't have to stay.
FREDERICK TRENCHARD: Wait for me.

Julian Fellowes's period drama Belgravia is an adaptation of his novel of the same name. The plot, which follows the trajectory of a family secret from a party in Belgium on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo in 1825 to England's Belgravia neighborhood in the 1840s, is a self-contained story, but in March 2023, MGM+ announced there will be a sequel series to Belgravia, aptly titled Belgravia: The Next Chapter. It will be set in the same world, but in a different time.
"I’m so proud of everything this dedicated team accomplished with the original Belgravia series. I cannot wait for the world to return to Belgravia for this new iteration, expertly crafted by Helen Edmundson," Julian Fellowes, Executive Producer, said in a statement. "Old and new fans alike will be swept off their feet with an emotionally engaging story, memorable characters, and brilliant production and costume design."
Here's what we know about season two:
The second season will be Belgravia: The Next Chapter.
Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn; Sophie Thompson as Mrs. Dunn; Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard [MARK MAINZ/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
The show will pick up in 1871, three decades after the events of season one. Per Deadline, "the series tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard, who has grown up as the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn, who is a newcomer to London society. Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother Susan and the scoundrel John Bellasis, a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his courtship of and marriage to Clara."
There's an entirely new cast:
Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn; Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard; Sophie Thompson as Mrs. Dunn; Sophie Winkleman as Duchess of Rochester [ROBERT VIGLASKY/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard. [COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Harriet Slater will star as Clara Trenchard (née Dunn), "a young, smart, and striking woman, and a fresh face amongst the society of Belgravia, Clara is thrilled by her marriage to the enigmatic Frederick … but as she comes to learn more of her husband and the trauma he carries, Clara finds her marriage will not be as smooth as she first thought and is something she must fight for."
Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard; Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard. [ROBERT VIGLASKY/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Ben Wainwright will play Frederic Trenchard, "the young and handsome third Lord Trenchard, Frederick takes after his grandfather with a ferocious work ethic, having built a large business empire. Immediately smitten with Clara, he marries her after a whirlwind romance, but brings with him traumas from his past that threatens his newfound happiness."
The rest of the cast is as follows:
Edward Bluemel as Dr. Stephen Ellerby [COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn; Toby Regbo as Reverend James Trenchard [COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Liam Garrigan as Fletcher; Elaine Cassidy as Davison [MARK MAINZ/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Edward Bluemel will play Dr. Stephen Ellerby, a young idealistic doctor captivated by Clara
Claude Perron will play French businesswoman the Marquise D’Étagnac
Toby Regbo will play Rev. James Trenchard, Frederick’s estranged brother
Elaine Cassidy will play Clara's lady's maid Davison
Hannah Onslow will play Clara’s older sister, Emily Dunn
Sophie Thompson will play Clara and Emily's mother, Mrs. Dunn.
Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard; Sophie Winkleman as Duchess of Rochester. COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+
Plus, the show will feature Sophie Winkleman as the Duchess of Rochester, described as "the queen of Belgravia" who sits atop the social hierarchy. Winkleman, also known as Lady Frederick Windsor, is a member of the British royal family. In August 2023, Winkleman opened up to the Daily Mail about the allure of Regency-era romances. "Just the way you compose yourself, the way you speak the words, we are in such a casual era," she explained, "To go back to some kind of formality, you realise how oddly sexy it is, because everything's so out there in this current century. There's actually no intrigue at all, so going back to then, when everything had to be so covered up for the sake of propriety, everything ripples under the surface. It is quite a sensual experience."
Alice Eve as Susan Trenchard. [COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
There's two returning cast members from the original Belgravia: Alice Eve as Susan Trenchard and Richard Goulding as Oliver Trenchard.
Belgravia was intended to be a limited series.
“For me, this is a completed story, although whenever I say this to any of the actors, they disagree with me violently, so I’m not sure we know the definitive answer to that, really,” Julian Fellowes initially said at a preview for Belgravia. “We’ll have to see. If anyone wants any more…”
“We definitely made this as a limited series because it’s really enjoyable at times to have a clear beginning, middle and end,” Gareth Neame, who also worked on Belgravia, said, per The Wrap. “And it’s obviously been adapted from a novel that has a clear ending. So that’s where we are right now. But obviously one never knows. If we find it does really well and we find another way to bring the title back in the future then I guess we would consider that. But right now it’s very clearly a limited series.
Belgravia season two premieres January 14, 2024.
Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard; Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard. MARK MAINZ
There will be eight episodes in the season. Watch a first trailer:

The lush British costume drama, Belgravia: The Next Chapter, from Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes has undergone a few changes since 2020. The setting is still the posh London enclave of the title, but it’s 1871 — 30 years later — and most of Season 1’s characters have died. The spotlight is now on Lord Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), grandson of the original Belgravia’s wealthy, social-climbing merchant James Trenchard.
Frederick was badly abused by his father, James’ son Oliver (the returning Richard Goulding, shown in flashbacks with Alice Eve, another returnee, as wife Susan). The reason? Frederick’s real father is the cad John Bellasis (Adam James). Never told about his illegitimate birth, the insecure, self-loathing young lord blames his inability to love on his younger brother, James (Toby Regbo, The Last Kingdom). “James was always the favorite child,” says exec producer Gareth Neame. “That completely destroyed Frederick.”
Still, Frederick believes — maybe incorrectly — that his spirited and beautiful new wife, Clara (Harriet Slater), can help him overcome his demons. But according to Neame, “They’re too strong.… Clara feels oppressed by her husband and trapped in that marriage.” And Frederick doesn’t help the situation, as he’s obsessed with his risky investments in the future of railroads and partnering with the unconventional Marquise D’Étagnac (Claude Perron), a moneyed French exile and an astute businesswoman.
Lord Trenchard is not, of course, the only one with a secret. His brother James, in reality a kindly reverend and not the monster Frederick imagines, struggles with his forbidden sexuality.
But there’s a truth-teller in this Chapter: An unexpected visitor could blow up several characters’ lives with just a few words.

Things Writers can Learn from Belgravia
I caught the tail end of Downton Abbey so it was not going to be a great lure that Julian Fellowes wrote this drama. But the costumes lured me so I gave it a chance. The entire plot rests on the son of Sophia Trenchard, a daughter of a nouveau riche developer and Edmund Brockenhurst, the son of an Earl. The parents of Sophia, Mrs Trenchard and Mr Trenchard believe that the son born to the pair after Waterloo was illegitimate, which would cast a shadow on their daughter's honour. They have the boy, Charles raised by a reverend Mr Pope. Mrs. Trenchard decides to tell Countess Brockenhurst, Charles's paternal grandmother about Charles. Countess Brockenhurst delights at the news for finally there is a better heir to the Earldom, over her ghastly nephew. Thus begins the ensuing battle between the grandmothers over whether or not acknowledge him. Confusion ensues. Here are the lessons we can learn from Belgravia.
One character is literally a device
Charles Pope is not a character in this drama. We get vague details about him. He runs a cotton mill, he has been raised by a reverend, he was educated, he likes Maria Grey, he wants to trade in India but mostly, that is the extent of him. In six episodes, he has no arc or development. He is an actual device of plot, pushed from pillar to post, there for characters to bounce off of. The audience gets sick of his name being said over and over and so do the characters. It becomes an actual running joke. Characters should not be sentient. They should be people, act and feel like people. They should not be devices but a catalyst.
No Conflict
There are so many points in the story where there should be conflict... but there isn't. Mrs Oliver has been a bitch throughout the episodes, shagging the antagonist John. She gets pregnant and tells John that she's willing to help him cover up the revelation about Charles and marry him to boot. John laughs at her and we get a little treat to watch her evil plans crumple. She goes running back to the Trenchards who accept her without even a raised voice. She even accepts her de facto exile to the country without much of a fight. Would it not have been more interesting to have the Trenchards first reject her and then accept her? Charles just accepts his new family and role. He never asks why his grandparents sent him away. He never has any questions or conflict about who he feels he is and who he has to be now. Would it not have been more interesting if they threw in doubt for Charles or have him reject his new future? Lady Brockenhurst doesn't even question Lady Trenchard. I mean a stranger comes to your home and says that your dead son banged their daughter and got her preggers? I would throw hands or at least ask her if she had proof. But Lady Brockenhurst never says a word against it. Would there not have been more interesting if she did throw hands? You have to provide characters with bumps in the road. They can't just sail smooth. You have to put bumps in the road.
Happy Endings all around
Everyone gets a happy ending in the story. John Bellasis escapes to France, alive and with the last of his parents's wealth. The Brockenhursts get an heir. Maria and Charles get married. High Society accepts the Trenchards. Mrs Oliver provides the Trenchards with a grandchild and finally gets accepted into their family fold. Maria even says how unbelievable it is that everyone has gotten a happy ending. Forking out happy endings for everybody in the audience just seems like a cheat. Almost nobody gets their just deserts nor does anybody earn anything. It doesn't exactly ring realistic nor justifiable for the audience for spending so much time with it.
Oh well... That's that
One thing that got me about the whole series is how quickly people just get to conclusions. Were revelations arise, they just accept it without a fight. Lady Brockenhurst just believes that her son fathered a child and never questions it. Lord Brockenhurst just accepts it without even asking for evidence. Maria Grey just falls in love with this guy she met. Mrs Bellasis just shrugs her shoulders at the fact her son has stolen her silver, her last means of wealth. John Bellasis just escapes after trying to kill somebody. Lady Templemore doesn't even ask to see the proof of Charles's legitimacy before allowing him to wed her daughter. Everyone just acts passively.

Ranking of "BELGRAVIA" (2020) Episodes
Below is my ranking of the six episodes from the 2020 ITV/Epix limited series, "BELGRAVIA", an adaptation of Julian Fellows' 2016 novel. Written by Fellowes and directed by John Alexander, the series starred Tasmin Greig, Harriet Walter and Philip Glennister:
1. (1.02) "Episode 2" - After meeting the Countess of Brockenhurst for the first time in the series premiere, Anne Trenchard pays a visit to the latter's home to inform her about their children's romance 26 years ago and Charles Pope, the son they had conceived. Shocked by Anne's information, Caroline Brockenhurst responds by tracking down the grandson they shared and inviting both him and the Trenchards to her late night supper party. Charles meets the beautiful socialite Lady Maria Grey for the first time.
2. (1.06) "Episode 6" - In the series finale, young Charles receives a mysterious offer of peace that ends up threatening his life. His grandfather, James Trenchard, desperately tries to clear Charles' name of fraud before the latter faces the loss of his new love, Lady Maria Grey.
3. (1.01) "Episode 1" - In the series premiere, James and Anne find themselves invited to the famous Duchess of Richmond's ball held in Brussels before the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. The Trenchards learn that their daughter Sophia is pregnant with the child of Edmund Bellasis. Twenty-six years later, Anne meets the now dead Edmund's mother, Lady Brockenhurst at the Duchess of Bedford's salon.
4. (1.03) "Episode 3" - The problems of the Earl of Brocklehurst's younger brother, the Reverend Stephen Bellasis, are revealed. Charles and Lady Maria become attracted to each other, as they strengthen their friendship. Stephen's son, John Bellasis, becomes interested in Caroline's new friendship with young Charles. Susan Trenchard, Anne and James' daughter-in-law, begins an affair with John.
5. (1.05) "Episode 5" - Oliver Trenchard, jealous of his father James' relationship with Charles, threatens to ruin the lives of many, when he makes a shocking discovery about the latter. John's discovery about Charles leads him to new lows with the help of two members of the Trenchard staff.
6. (1.04) "Episode 4" - Tensions rise when Caroline organizes an outing for Lady Maria and Anne at Charles' office. Susan's affair with John catches up with her. Anne's maid, Ellis, begins to show her true colors by striking a deal with John.

Hi! I just found your blog, it’s so cool how many fandoms you write for! I was wondering if I could get a belgravia imagine? Maybe with John Bellasis where he meets the reader for the first time at a ball and he falls in love with her (it’s kinda cliche haha) but he gets rid of his asshole attitude to be with her? Thank you so much ❤️
Hi! Thank you so much!!! I really try to write for as mush fandoms as I can (especially the not popular ones)...
And for your request I am terribly sorry but the only character I write for (for now) is Charles Pope... I’m really am sorry but I’d rather say no now than to write something bad... ❤️

ITV orders 1840s Drama Belgravia from Julian Fellowes
ITV is heading back into the past with Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. The British commercial broadcaster has commissioned a series based on his novel Belgravia, a tale of secrets and scandals set in 1840s London.
Downton Abbey indie Carnival Films is producing the series, which is being lined up for an initial six-part run that is set to start production in the next few months.
The series is set in the 19th Century, around seventy years before Downton, when the upper echelons of society began to rub shoulders the emerging industrial nouveau riche. But the story begins on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, when the Duchess of Richmond throws a party in Brussels for the Duke of Wellington. Among the guests are James and Anne Trenchard, who are living on the profits of newfound trading success. Their young daughter Sophia has caught the eye of Edmund Bellasis, the son and heir of one of the richest and most prominent families in England. Twenty-five years later, when the two families are settled into the newly developed area of Belgravia, the events of the ball, and the secrets, still resonate.
The book, which was published in 2016, was originally published online in a serial format, similar to that of Charles Dickens’ novels, albeit originally via an app that also included an audiobook narration by Juliet Stevenson.
Fellowes is adapting his own novel and the drama is being directed by John Alexander, who has directed series such as Sky’s Jamestown.

ENRIGHT: I need to speak with you, Master James. I really need to speak with you.
REV. JAMES TRENCHARD: : John Bellasis? You're saying... You're saying... John Bellasis is Frederick's father?... Bellasis was the man... The man who tried to kill our cousin...... And he asked you to... to watch my brother?
ENRIGHT: He told me that he couldn't return to England. Later on, I understood why.....Paid me a small yearly fee. I was to secure a job at Glanville House and send him reports from time to time about the boy... his progress... how he was being treated.... There was never any malice in it, sir. I kept an eye on him, loved him. I'll say that. And I sent off my reports to a post office outside Paris, and I never received a reply... until today. You see why I've come? You know His Lordship has dismissed me? I'm quite sure he won't see me, so...
REV. JAMES TRENCHARD: He won't see me. I've tried. I've written to him many times since I heard of his present difficulties...
ENRIGHT: Then I think we must make him see us, sir.
REV. JAMES TRENCHARD: We are to go to my brother and tell him this... this villain was his father?

Downton Abbey Character List
This is an updated list through Series 6. The original list is here, although I’ve also been updating own list in a Word Doc since 2013, which is what this is based on. Below are the characters listed in alphabetical order by last name (for the most part). Characters not ever appearing on screen are in italics. For real people mentioned, I’ve only included them if the Crawelys et al. knew them personally (references to real historical figures will be included in a separate list). While I’ve included some family members without names who are mentioned, I have left out minor characters with no names and also animals (if you need that info or have any questions on that, message me). This does include information that is only included in the S1-3 script books.
I hope that the Keep Reading works on mobile, because this list is very long!
A Acland, Lady Anne (S6E6) Acland, Lord (d.; Anne's husband who died in WWI) Adams, Mr (formerly of the schoolhouse)
Aldridge, Ephraim Atticus [goes by middle name] Aldridge, Lady Rose (née MacClare) Aldridge, Victoria Rachel Cora (b. 1925; we see photos of her) [Aldridge] Daniel, Lord Sinderby [Aldridge] Rachel, Lady Sinderby Other family members mentioned: Lady Sinderby’s cousin Sir John Gluck (at the S5E8 party but not on-screen), The Melfords (Lady Sinderby's cousins, including one named Anne) For Rose’s relations see the MacClares
[Allsopp] Lord William "Billy", Baron of Aysgarth Allsopp, Lady (d.) Allsopp, The Honourable Madeleine Other family members who appeared on screen: older sister to Lord Aysgarth (S4CS)

With Downton Abbey over and The Gilded Age wrapping up its freshman season, MGM+ will host the creative teams' next show.
As previously reported, Belgravia: The Next Chapter premieres on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
While the series is dubbed the next chapter in the Belgravia franchise, the show starts with a new crop of characters that makes it easy to tune in without watching the original.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip that showcases what life's like in 1871 for the characters and even hints at some links to the original series.
We won't spoil what the clip reveals, but there are sentiments from the new cast members and writer Helen Edmundson.
Belgravia: The Next Chapter tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn (Harriet Slater), a beautiful newcomer to London society.
Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother, Susan (Alice Eve) and the scoundrel John Bellasis (Adam James), a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his marriage to Clara.
As Clara learns more of her husband and his traumas, she finds her marriage may not be as harmonious as she dreamed.
Picking up three decades later in 1871, "The Next Chapter is an exciting continuation of the 2020 limited series named for—and set in—the affluent London district that became synonymous with the upper echelons of London society in the 19th century," according to MGM+.
"Introducing new characters and relationships, The Next Chapter promises plenty of scandal that you won't soon forget.
Developed and written by critically acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Edmundson, Belgravia: The Next Chapter, is executive produced by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age) and based on his novel of the same name.
The series stars Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard (née Dunn), Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard, Edward Bluemel as Dr. Stephen Ellerby, Toby Regbo as Rev. James Trenchard, and Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn.
The cast is rounded out by Sophie Thompson as Mrs. Dunn, Claude Perron as The Marquise D'Etagnac, Sophie Winkleman as the Duchess of Rochester, and Elaine Cassidy as Davison.
The two returning cast members from the original series are Alice Eve as Susan Trenchard and Richard Goulding as Oliver Trenchard.
Pulling off a sequel is tricky, but the official trailer showcased a very different Belgravia as the series leaps to 1871.
The world has changed, but Belgravia remains, meaning that although we're meeting an entirely new cast, we're getting some great stories at the iconic location.
Whether that will come together in the way those associated with the show hope, we don't know, but for now, we're excited about the prospect of returning to that rich universe.
