In which you interview for a low-level position at Cameron Development, but instead, you unexpectedly find yourself chosen as Rafe Cameron's personal assistant.

The sky was dreary. You looked up to see dark and ominous clouds staring down at you. Taking a breath to steady your nerves, you continued walking along the pavement. At least the southern sun wasn’t beating down on you. Maybe you’d appear less sweaty and nervous to your possible employer.
Charlotte was a big city you hadn’t fully explored, but your walk was familiar. A few blocks down from the Cameron Development headquarters was the Mug & Muffin, where you’d been serving coffee for the past year. You practically only served housewives who had the time to grab coffee at 11 in the morning and suits who were on their way to the giant buildings downtown to make more money than you’d ever see in your whole life.
Today was your day off; however, it was the only day of the week that you weren’t working for ten straight hours. Somehow, you’d been selected to interview for a Filing Clerk position at Cameron Development. You thought it was some kind of mistake that out of all the places you applied to through online portals, a legitimate company wanted to interview you. Not only was it legit, but they had their building downtown. The building was no skyscraper, but looking up at twenty dark steel floors, huge windows wrapped around each side, and a sparkling gold sign that read CAMERON, you felt incredibly intimidated.
When you finally pushed through the revolving doors, you reminded yourself that it was a small position. A small position you weren't qualified for, but there was no need to worry. The receptionist on the first floor barely glanced at you when you approached her. You took a deep breath, slowly releasing it before starting your sentence: “Hi, I have an eight-thirty interview with Andy Speer in the Record Management department.”
She spoke curtly, “Twelfth floor,” She pointed to the elevators hidden behind a corner.
“Th-Thank you,” You mumbled, your shoes clicking against beautiful marble floors as you made your way to the elevators. You weren’t expecting to go so high up the building. The ride felt like an eternity, with each floor reminding you of how out-of-place you were. Even the receptionist who worked on the first floor acted like she was above you. You wiped your sweaty palms on your dress, grateful you’d chosen a black one. Well, you were thankful that you’d chosen the second out of the only two nice dresses you owned.
You were now the age you should've graduated college at, you couldn’t work at a coffee shop forever. If you ever wanted to not have to live with three other people then you needed a serious job. You needed to take advantage of this opportunity. If you somehow landed it, this was the type of job where you might be able to grow. Who knows? Maybe you’d eventually be able to afford a car payment. Those thoughts pushed you forward as you walked down the hallway.
“Ah, Ms. Y/L/N,” The male voice came from behind you and you whirled around to see a short, bearded man approaching you. He wore a blue dress shirt and navy tie and was carrying a coffee from no other place than the Mug & Muffin. You spotted a small brown spot near his shirt pocket wear he’d clearly spilled some, “You’re here about the Filing Clerk position?”
You nodded, your heart beginning to race, as you stuck your hand out for him to shake. You weren’t sure if you were overdressed, having worn your outfit at your cousins wedding, but you added a red cardigan and ballet flats to make it more professional, “Yes,” You smiled, “That’s mmm-me.”
He didn’t seem to look you over more than once, and his smile remained despite the bump in your speech, “Great, my name is Andy Speer. I manage the department. Come on into my office.”
Breath, you reminded yourself. Start your sentences slow. Take a pause if you need to. If you get stuck, don’t get too frustrated. Try not to bring attention to it.
When you settled into his office, relatively small but with a large window that had a lovely view of the city, he began the interview. You folded your hands in your lap, trying to be acutely aware of your facial expressions and your body’s posture.
“So, tell me a little about your experience,” He started.
“Well,” Breath in and slowly release, “I’ve actually been working at the Mug & Muffin as a shift lead for the past year but, before that, I worked in retail for several years. I’m v-vvvv-very organized; that’s why I’ve been able to help with-with both managing inventory and scheduling tasks.”
“Organization is key in a position like this. And you also know how to work on your feet. Our clerks travel all throughout the building, retrieving documents and assisting with things like file purging and managing file systems.”
Deep breath in. Start slowly.
“I’m totally capable of being in service to others. Working in customer service will teach you how to deal with people very quickly and I’m sure there are similar ups and d-downs even within a company. I think it’s important to show a p-p-person that you’re listening, even if you c-c-can’t help them directly.”
He nodded, “People tend to forget that. What else interests you about working in Records Management?”
“I like the idea of keeping things in order. Making ssss-ssss,” Too fast. Slow down, “Sssss-sssss-sure. Uhm. Making sure everything is in place. It ssss-sound sss-small but it’s s-something I’m good at. And I’d like to be a part of a bigger company where I can grow and learn.”
Andy’s lips parted, and he gave you a look that you were no stranger to, “Ms. Y/L/N, if you don’t mind me asking–”
“I have a stutter,” You finished his sentence before taking another breath, slowing down as much as you could, “I have it managed, mostly. When I’m asked direct questions, or I’m especially nervous, it can flare up. But I-I-I am nervous. I’m interested in this job.”
Andy smiled softly, and your heart seemed to rest slightly. The pounding in your chest was about to make you go crazy.
“I appreciate your honesty. I have more questions for you but there’s no need to be confined to this office. I’ll show you around the building.”
You were more than relieved, instantly nodding. He seemed to understand how tense you were and undoubtedly the conversation would feel more casual if the two of you were walking at the same time. The interview continued, and Andy allowed you time to ask him questions about your possible role.
Still, you felt small, like a child in an adult’s world. Andy touched on your lack of secondary education but didn’t press it. You explained how you’d completed two years of your undergrad degree, majoring in accounting but had to leave for personal reasons. You explained that you eventually wanted to finish your degree, but in reality, you’d only chosen accounting because it was one of the few majors that didn’t require you to take a public speaking class.
You followed him through corridors with large glass meeting rooms on either side. Again, everyone you came across looked like they belonged. You walked past a room with a long, sleek table, and it seemed like at least twenty people were sitting at the table. At the front of the room was a tall man, impeccably dressed in a navy blue suit. His back was slightly turned, but the air of authority permeated through the glass all the way to you. You felt it against your skin.
His voice was raised but was muffled by the glass barrier, “That’s Mr. Cameron. Our CEO.”
Your lips parted when you caught a real glance at him. He was older but much younger than you expected. Certainly younger than a CEO typically was. His hair was buzzed short, his skin a nice tan color, and blue eyes that locked on you. Briefly but intensely, “Let’s continue our tour.”
The rest of the tour happened in a blur. You felt that you made a good impression on Mr. Speer. He was accepting of your stutter and resonated with all the examples you shared from your past jobs. He informed you that they were interviewing four other applicants but that you’d receive an update in the next week about whether they’d chosen you.
You felt slightly more confident than when you arrived and you reached for your phone, wanting to text your roommate how it went and that you’d be home soon but you ran into wall of muscle as you stepped onto the elevator, “S-Sorry,” You gasped, reaching down to grab your phone which had slipped from your grasp, “Ssss-so sss-sorry.”
Just shut up, you told yourself, and you found yourself actually speechless when you looked up into Mr. Cameron’s eyes, “Careful,” He said, slightly patronizing, and you wanted to crawl inside your skin. You tucked your phone away into your bag, stepping aside until you were on the other side of the elevator.
The elevator door closed, and your eyes widened when you realized the elevator was not going down, “Oh,” You breathed, “You’re going up.”
Of course he was going up. The CEO works on the top floor. And now, here you were, stuck in an elevator with the CEO himself, a barista dressed up and pretending to belong in a place you had no right to be.
“Yeah, you can usually tell by looking at the arrows before you get on.”
You pressed your lips together, determined not to say anything more, even though you could feel his eyes on you. He sighed, “You’re new, I’m assuming.”
You shook your head. Breathe, start slowly. “I interviewed today. File Clerk.” Keep it brief, you reminded yourself. There was no need to try to impress the CEO—he was far too important to be involved in hiring someone like you. It was better not to embarrass yourself.
The elevator dinged with each floor that you passed, “Ah, well, I hope you were impressed by all the company has to offer,” he said as the doors opened, revealing a sleek black wall with the Cameron Development logo etched in gold. A waterfall cascaded down the marble surface, exuding elegance, “Enjoy your ride down.”
“B-Bye-”
Shut up.
You reached to press the lobby button, watching as his large figure slowly disappeared down a hallway before the doors shut again.
There went that small sliver of confidence.
Tumblr media
You went down a rabbit hole googling Cameron Development, of course. Rafe Cameron was just shy of thirty but he inherited the company from his father, Ward, when he was only twenty. It went from a company centered to the Outer Banks to one that served clients across the entire country. According to a website you weren’t sure was actually reputable, his networth was close to 1.3 billion dollars.
And he thought you were an idiot. Most likely, he wouldn’t remember you all.
You hoped you wouldn’t run into again when you returned to the Cameron Developent the next week. Andy had called you to let you know that you’d been chosen for the job, but when you approached the receptionist on the first floor, she informed you that you should check in with the receptionist on the twentieth floor.
Was there another portion of the hiring process that involved meeting someone higher up in the company? You asked her if she’d actually meant that floor twice before the woman rolled her eyes and pretended to answer a phone call.
The twentieth floor.
You splurged on a new outfit, hopeful that your new job’s salary would soon replenish your funds. You’d be making ten dollars more per hour, after all. You chose a black, square-neck top and soft cream-colored pants, pairing them with your trusty ballet flats that matched almost everything.
When you arrived on the twentieth floor again, you couldn’t shake the feeling that security might escort you out at any moment. Walking past the elegant waterfall, you found the receptionist desk. The redheaded woman behind it was stunning, and though her smile lacked sincerity, at least she looked you directly in the eyes.
“Hi, I’m supposed to meet with Andy Speer in Record Management?”
“Are you Y/N Y/L/N?” You nodded as you let out a breath. At least you weren’t in the wrong place.
“Follow me,” she said, stepping out from behind the desk. She was dressed in a sleek, navy dress adorned with gold buttons down the front, tied with a bow at the waist. You couldn’t help but admire her style, your gaze trailing down to her elegant heels. “You’ll be meeting with Mr. Cameron today.”
“Wh-” Your lips paused in an uncomfortable, rounded position before the block in your speech passed, “Why?”
She didn’t respond, and there wasn’t time to press her as she led you to the end of a long hallway. You found yourself in front of two imposing, black double doors. With a push of the large, gold handles, she opened them to reveal the most elaborate room you’d ever seen.
The sheer scale of the room was breathtaking. Your eyes immediately went up to ceilings at least two floors tall and a gigantic window covering the farther wall. You thought Andy’s view was nice … you could see all of Charlotte from this window. Long black curtains hung from the ceiling to keep some of the light out. When the curtains were drawn, the room would undoubtedly take on a different character—moodier, more intimate, and even more private.
To the right, a stunning black marble fireplace dominated the wall, flanked by a bookcase that stretched the entire length of the room. A plush seating area featured leather couches that looked as comfortable as they were luxurious, with a low coffee table in front. Nearby, a polished bar cart stood ready, stocked with an array of crystal glasses and top-shelf spirits. No doubt to impress clients.
“Holy…” You spoke, as smooth as ever.
To the left was Rafe and his expansive mahogany desk, positioned to take advantage of the view of the city’s infrastructure. His desk was organized with files stacked neatly, a computer with multiple desktops, and a mug that held steaming coffee. Expensive art pieces were framed on the wall behind him, carefully selected to aid the overall aesthetic of the space. They were dark and imposing like him.
His chair was high-backed and leather, and as you met his eyes, you noticed he was just as tailored as the room. Broad shoulders and lean frame … you wondered how much time he spent carefully crafting it. He set aside the folder he had been reviewing as the redhead, Eleanor, announced your presence.
"Mr. Cameron, your ten o’clock meeting," she said.
“Thank you, Eleanor. That’ll be all,” His voice was smooth and commanding, “Come sit, Ms. Y/L/N.”
He emphasized the leather chairs in front of his desk and although your legs felt like weights, you crossed the room. You couldn’t help but continue to stare at how impressive it was and now that you’d learned more about him through your research, it made sense. What didn't make sense to you was why you were sitting in front of it.
He leaned forward, his hands folding together, and instinctively you moved further back in your chair, “I got a chance to look at your application and resume.”
Your eyes widened, “Really?”
He nodded, “You never finished college. Why’s that?”
“I…I don’t understand,” You couldn’t hide the confusion on your face, “I didn’t think I-I would b-b-be …I thought Mr. Speer would be here.”
“He works for me, doesn’t he?”
“Y-Yes-” “You want to work for my company, don’t you?”
“Yes, sir,” you repeated, your voice smaller this time. His head tilted slightly, his gaze sharpening.
“Did you forget my original question?”
“N-No,” You blurted before you took a breath. Relax, you told yourself, despite being aware of the environment that Mr. Cameron had already created, “I …I-”
He was patient but unyielding. You tried to imagine that you were just telling a story and not answering a pointed question. He was worth a billion dollars, not you. You had to answer his questions truthfully.
“I had a bad flare-up with my speech during my sophomore year. I …all throughout highschool it was very mild, but for some unknown reason, it got really sss-severe. My professors were … not accommodating. It felt immm-mmm-impossible.”
He stared at you for an uncomfortable amount of seconds. His piercing gaze had a way of making feeling like you were naked. You crossed your arms in front of your chest, “I see,” He tapped his finger against his desk, “It took me almost eight years to finish business school. By the end, my professor’s were only passing me because of who I was.”
Your lips parted in shock at his sudden candor.
An ugly truth for an ugly truth.
“Oh,” you whispered, not knowing what else to say.
“I’m saying this because it doesn’t matter how many boxes check or how good of a person you are. It doesn’t matter to me what you think you deserve.”
“Okay,” You nodded, still unsure, “I don’t think think I deserve this job. But I want it.”
“How bad?” His lips pulled into a smirk.
You searched your mind for all the rehearsed interview answers that you’d practiced, “I think I’m a really g-good fit for the–”
“No, what would you do?” He interrupted you, not in the way that people usually did because you were taking too long to speak. He was just completely uninterested in the words you had to say, “Let’s say six months from now, you’re up for a promotion and Andy corners you in his office. It’s ten-thousand more a year. Would you fuck him?”
There was a version of you, the rationale un-scared version of you, that would’ve stood up and walked out of the room. But you froze in place as you searched his eyes for whether he was asking you a trick question.
Breathe in, let it out slowly, “No, I wouldn’t. I don’t understand.”
“If he hired you as a File Clerk, it would be a great way to get promoted,” Rafe said, “I looked at the other applicants, they’re all more qualified, but you’re more beautiful. It’s a pattern I’m starting to notice with him.”
You couldn’t comprehend why he’d brought you here just to tear you down—to belittle someone who would be working for his own company. Shaking your head, you stammered, “I-I made a mmm-mistake,” as you reached for your bag. But Rafe held up a hand, stopping you in your tracks.
“Don’t worry,” He stood up from his chair. You took a breath and swallowed, trying to keep your heart inside your chest. Hands in his pockets, he walked around the length of his desk until he was in front of you. Even as he leaned back on his desk, his presence seemed to cloud all of your senses, “Mr. Speer does want you to work for him in his department and you’re free to do so. However, I want to hire you as my personal assistant.”
“Uhm,” You blinked, caught off guard. “M-Me?”
“I’m between assistants right now and I think you’d be a perfect fit,” His watched your reaction carefully, his lips in a thin smile.
Rafe Cameron was a complete asshole.
“You want me to be your personal assistant?” You asked slowly, trying to prevent a stutter.
“I want you to be my personal assistant,” he echoed, looking amused, “I think you’re cute.”
You raised an eyebrow, “Because I’m a c-college dropout www-with a stutter?”
“Not just that,” he shrugged, his nonchalance making you want to scowl. You should’ve walked out already, but something kept you rooted to your seat.  “I think it would be mutually beneficial. The pay starts at eighty-thousand.”
“A year?” You asked, feeling foolish immediately.
“That’s almost triple what you make at your barista job.”
You eyed him curiously and wondered how exactly he knew that, “Yeah …”
“So, do you want it or not, Ms. Y/L/N?” The words hung in the air, and you couldn’t bring yourself to say "no." What choice did you really have? Work for a boss who might eventually cross the line—or work for one who’s offering to triple your salary?
“I’d love to give you more time to think it over,” he continued, glancing at his watch, “but I have a meeting in five minutes and will be out of the country for the rest of the week. You’ll need to decide now.”
You bit down on your bottom lip and anxiously picked at the fabric of your pants until you said, “Ninety-thousand.”
“You’re negotiating when you have no experience?” He wasn’t angry, just surprised.
You nodded, although you were afraid you’d made a mistake. Now, you’d be escorted out by security. But you’d seen something in his eyes—something he wasn’t trying to deny. For reasons you couldn’t quite grasp, he wanted you.
“Eighty-five thousand,” he countered.
You paused, “Okay.”
“Okay?” You nodded again. “Great.”
He clapped his hands together, “W-When would I ssss-start?”
“A week from now. Monday morning at seven. I get in at seven-thirty, and I expect you to be waiting here. Eleanor will work on getting your new wardrobe delivered to you before then.”
“Wardrobe?” You echoed, bewildered.
“I would’ve given you a hundred if you kept pushing,” he said, waving you off as he retreated behind his desk. Your jaw dropped as he added, “That’ll be all.”
The doors to his office opened again, and the redhead waited patiently for you to gather your things and hurry over to her. You glanced behind you to see Rafe intently focused on his computer screen.
When you finally had enough distance from his office, you asked, “What happened to his last personal assistant?” You thought you might hyperventilate when you were finally alone with your thoughts.
“Mr. Cameron can be difficult to please,” She smiled down at you, but her eyes were solemn, “Let me take your measurements.”
“Oh, I c-could just t-t-t-tell you,” you stammered, trying to get the words out quickly.
“They’ll need to be exact,” You followed her behind the reception desk.
You looked at her closer—voluminous hair, a sharp jawline, winged eyeliner that executed perfectly. She was tall, slender, and beautiful, and you felt like you were nothing like her. Again, a child in a place meant for adults. He’d chosen someone like Eleanor, that made sense to you, but you couldn’t wrap your mind around what he saw in you.
Cute, he’d said. You always got cute. Never beautiful. Eleanor probably always got called beautiful.
You stood still as she took your precise measurements, including around your hips, thighs, and bust. It was another moment where you probably should have run. “About this wardrobe I’ll be receiving…” you began cautiously.
“You’ll only wear what he picks out for you,” She said.
Breathe. “That’s a little crazy, right?”
“Your job will ensure he has everything he needs—every hour of the day. You want to be nice to look at, don’t you?”
And you don’t look nice to look at right now.
“Will I have a desk?”
Eleanor gestured to the one across from her, the second of two black desks in a square-shaped pod, “That one is yours, technically.”
“Technically?”
“Did he mention he works from home on Fridays?”
“No-”
“You’ll report to his house at seven a.m. on Fridays rather than here.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah,” Eleanor said with a knowing nod. “Don’t worry, I’ll type this all up in an email for you.”
Tumblr media
Later, you sat in your apartment's living room, still in your pajamas. Your roommates, Imani and Angel, were at work for the next few hours, leaving you alone with your thoughts. You scrolled through your old laptop, reading the offer letter from Cameron Development three times: eighty-five thousand dollars plus excellent benefits. You hadn’t even been to the doctor in two years because of how expensive and terrible your insurance was.
You could afford your own apartment. You wouldn’t leave your roommates hanging, of course, but maybe you could in a few months. You could get your own cat like you’ve always wanted. That money would change your life.
Your clothes arrived with a delivery man who was already frustrated with you. He had to make three trips to bring in all the garment bags Rafe had sent. He grew even more frustrated when you begged him to return some of it. They filled your entire living room, and you’d be a horrible roommate to keep all of it. You’d have to throw out all of your clothes to make them fit in your room.
When the delivery man left, you started to zip the packages open and examine their contents. Your hands shook when you read the first price tag: a twelve-hundred-dollar Giorgio Armani dress. You began to notice a pattern as you looked at thirty different outfits. There were no black dresses or dark colors at all. Many of them were sad excuses for a woman’s professional work clothes.
You couldn’t deny that the outfits were sophisticated, but they all seemed to follow a particular theme. If one didn’t feature a mini-skirt, it showcased a sleeveless top. Many had a professional air, with neat rows of buttons running down the front or crafted from rich tweed material. Yet, they were also undeniably frilly and elegant, teetering on the edge of overly dainty. You couldn’t shake the feeling that if you wore one, you’d resemble a Barbie doll more than a personal assistant.
Breaking a sweat, you piled all of the garment bags in your room, leaving only a small amount of room for you to walk from your bedroom to the bathroom. That was going to be a problem. Maybe he wouldn’t mind if you returned some of them. How many outfits did you really need for work?
The man also brought in a trunk—an oversized, luxurious piece you couldn’t dream of fitting into your tiny shoebox of a room. Once you cleared enough space in the living room, you finally managed to open it. Inside, the left side was lined with rows of pristine heels, each pair more exquisite than the last. On the right, several items were wrapped in burlap sacks made from fine material. You carefully unwrapped one that bore the name GUCCI, revealing a small lilac handbag that looked both delicate and expensive.
God, you thought despite the fact you didn’t believe in him.
Your roommates were going to think you were some kind of sugar baby or escort. Even if you explained what happened, they might still believe that.
When you checked your laptop again, there was an email from Eleanor.
Dear Y/N Y/L/N,

-Madison
THE FINAL WORDS that Madison's stepmother Inez had jokingly yelled out the car window at her before she sped off to work were fairly sticking with her all throughout the day. She had driven at neck-breaking speed as she often had a habit of doing, and then braked so hard that she probably would have given any other passenger in the car a pretty bad whiplash, which Madison was convinced that Inez is immune to it by now, and then rolled down her window and told her; "y’know, if you want to actually make some friends you should really quit acting so bitchy."
Mind you, this was after she had gone on at her for days on end about being herself.
Madison was not opposed to making friends at this school. She wanted to. It's just so difficult when the fantastic, gold-crested reputation of your parents follows you around everywhere you go, and it's even worse when everyone else in your school completely matches that reputation.
To her, there's nothing worse than extra-cred class. She could promise you that. Especially when there are only fifteen more minutes left of the school day until the school bell rang sweet salvation and the students were released from the clutches school for another day. The classroom was decorated in crisp oranges, reds, yellows and browns; and the smothering scent of the ten-plus pumpkin spice candles could probably be smelt from miles away.
Madison's teacher, Ms. DuBois, was from Salem, and she loved nothing more than talking about witches in Salem. DuBois continued to rattle on about the executions that took place during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692- and since they were in Eli and not Salem, Madison could not fathom a single plausible reason as to why her extra-cred class had decided to adopt the Salem Witch Trials.
Oakwood Academy, Madison's new school, had managed to work its way to having one of the top academic records in America by providing an extra area of study for every year that a student attended. It was just one of the classes that would act as a "relaxer" for the workload that the Academy dumped on their students. They allocated five sets of twenty-five students to five different classes. For example; her older brother was allocated into a class that studied some of history's most famous serial criminals. The girl had been hit with a low-key pang of jealousy when she looked at his workbook, but she would never admit that.
Serial killer documentaries from Buzzfeed Unsolved was for her what World War II was to her brother Tiano.
Halfway through the class, Madison decided that Ms DuBois' babbles were nothing more than folklore and legends. There is no possible way that witches could exist, and even if they did; they would have become so sparsely spread out throughout the centuries that bloodlines would have become diluted into non-existence.
Madison had finally just about given up listening, getting ready to switch to her earphones when DuBois began talking about Gwendoline Proctor and Marie-Anne Dufosett. Judging by the amount of borderline useless word scrambles and pop quizzes that she had been bombarded with since August in which their names had popped up in, this would no doubt be just as bleak as the rest of the topic.
"Marie-Anne Dufosett was burned at the stake along with her mother and some other accused women-"
Well, that's just peachy.
"-However, does anybody know who accused Mademoiselle Dufosett of Witchcraft and Conspiring with the Devil?"
A few hands shot up. Oh, great, Madison thought, another room full of Hocus Pocus lovers.
DuBois picked on a boy at the back of the room wearing a black turtleneck underneath his blazer. "Perrone Goguillon," he answered.
Well, at least I know that instead of how to pay taxes.
Ms DuBois clapped her hands together and was about to praise him when Madison poked her head up and blurted out, "who in fresh hell is Peregrine Goujon?" The class burst into a peal of abrupt laughter and her face flashed a red that was possibly close to her burgundy uniform.
DuBois waited patiently for the laughter to die down, giving Madison a well-intended smile. She'd been trying to pry Madison out of her shell for weeks. "Miss Delvaux, I'm so happy that we've finally been graced with your conscious presence," she said. "Perrone Goguillon was one of the last witches to burnt at the stake in France."
What has that got to do with Salem?
There was a pause.
Turtleneck Boy piped up yet again. "Wasn't Perrone Marie-Anne's mother?"
Ms DuBois nodded, what followed probably should have been a moment for shock factor was cut short by Madison's unimpressive comment of; "Sounds like someone gained some serious mommy-issues."
Apart from a few smirks and sniggers, the room stayed in a star awkward silence. It was that moment when Madison had realised that making fun of witches in this classroom was possibly as close as you could get to treason.
The bell finally rang out before Madison could embarrass herself any further. She pulled on her coat and started speed-walking to get out of the school. She found listening to Toxic by Britney Speers always made her faster.
The crisp Massachusetts air stung at her cheeks hard, nipping at them until they were a hard red. The leaves crunched with a prominent sound and the wind blew quite fiercely. She hated fall- she missed the sweet Florida summer and sunshine that she had become so accustomed to. She missed splashing about in their swimming pool with her friends, sitting on her boyfriend's shoulders and having matches of pool basketball. They could get very competitive and Madison was certainly no stranger to having her head pushed underwater for the sake of one of her friends scoring a goal.
Her family had just moved to Massachusetts for her stepmother's work, as they often had moved around for that reason numerous times in the past. Inez worked with companies that were hanging on the edge of bankruptcy. A quick call to her office and she would work on the case as soon as possible. Most cases she could work on from home or online, but every few years a huge opportunity or promotion would come up that would require a move. It was always worth it. Inez was a wizard with a logbook and her incredible finances knowledge; she would advise the company and work with as many people as possible to save the company and boost its profits massively.
The job also came with a pretty hefty paycheck. Inez had been in Madison's life for as long as the girl could recall memory.
Now that the latest- and hopefully final- addition to the Delvaux family had come, Madison's father spent most of his time at home taking care of baby Thomas. In contrast to Inez, Madison's father came from a long line of "old" money; decades ago, his family was incredibly wealthy Franco-Belgian gold merchants, owning around 40% of the most flourishing gold mines in Belgium and France of which together bestowed them with a huge amount of the finest Belgian gold. Although the number of which lowered to about 750 tons of gold, the family net worth was still well into the billions.
Madison's father broke away from the complete gold-mine owning tradition and earned a job as a professor of physics in certain prestigious colleges across the country, although, there were still plenty of goldmines still to his name.
However, despite their needless fortune, most of the family, along with Inez, managed to stay incorrupt, helping to build many schools, hospitals and jobs in developing countries and donating thousands of millions of dollars to charities, side-lining with the Delvaux-Proveux Foundation to help create a better society with whatever difference they could cause.
Her parents did their best to remain humble- which sometimes proved itself difficult when the next five generations of their family could probably eat from solid gold plates if they chose to.
Needless to say, they spent only what they needed to, didn't exploit their riches, lived in the slightly more luxurious suburban homes. Madison was sent to Oakwood Academy; possibly the most unnecessarily expensive school in the north-east of America along with her adopted older brother Tiano and her adopted little sister Safina; the second youngest, Aleja went to an elementary not far from their home, and baby Thomas just did his best not to poop his pants straight after his diaper had been changed. Madison was convinced he did his best to poop at the worst possible time.
The house they had recently moved into was a beautiful country mansion, overlooking a lake and meadows, the balcony that showed a complete view of the landscape was perhaps Madison's favourite part of the house- apart from her bed of course.
She walked briskly up the pathway leading to the front door, doing her best to not show that she was absolutely freezing to death despite the massive coat. No sooner had she got in the door that she turned the heater on full blast and ran upstairs, diving into her bed.
Inconveniently, she was now too warm.
Madison rolled her eyes and then rolled out of bed with a slight thud, ran downstairs, lowered the heating, then ran back upstairs again- now at a slightly more satisfactory temperature. Her phone began to buzz; an incoming facetime from her friends back in Florida.
Madison jumped up promptly, fixing her hair and trying to make it look like she wasn't considering an attempt at home-made abseiling down the wall beneath her window. She accepted the call and lo and behold the screams and squeals of five of her best friends burst from the phone from on the other side of the country. Meghan, the girl in front and centre, called out Madison's name with an ear-piercing screech.
"Woah, Woah. Calm down, Meghan I'm not hoping to go deaf anytime soon," she muttered, pretending to be annoyed, making a particular fuss of changing the settings on her hearing aid. Meghan playfully rolled her eyes and began talking over the other girls.
"Oh, shut up, Maddie. How's Massachusetts? Find any cute warlocks that we need to come out and see?" She asked.
"Meghan, this place is amazing and beautiful- there's so many other things here than witches and warlocks and Harvard's array of nerds," she said, pretending she didn't want to hop on her tricycle and go home.
To be truthful, it was obvious that Meghan could see straight through the blatant lie.
"Well, if you say so, babes. Give us a tour of your house! We need to see chez Madison after stalking it for an hour on Google Maps."
Madison gave a hearty chuckle. "Well, if you insist."
Madison began her own rendition of a virtual tour around her house, showing everything from the luxury bathrooms to the heated pool in the basement. The ooooooo's and ahhhhhhhhh's were constant. The house was beautiful- that was undeniable. However, the crowning glory of the house was a massive stain-glass window depicting a woman by the lake.
"The realtors said that the builder of the house had it built in 1876 to memorialize the women persecuted and killed during the witch trials," Madison said, admiring the beautiful display of colours on the floor from the sun shining through the window.
"That's cheery."
That's typical Meghan.
"Now, more important than your sexy house; are you or are you not coming to prom?" Meghan asked, expectantly.
Madison shrugged, "I'm not sure, we only just got here, and I don't think my parents would want me flying across the country all by myself."
Meghan let out a slightly satisfied sigh. "So, does that mean Dylan is now free for me to take as my date?"
Madison gritted her teeth hard. Only forever has Meghan been trying to steal Dylan away from her. "Sure, as long as it's just as friends," she answered, fully emphasizing the word "friends".
Meghan laughed emptily. "Well, how else would I be taking him? Trust me, Maddie baby, if I wanted Dylan so bad, I would've gotten him months ago." There was a coy smile and awkward glances shared by the others.
Madison bit her tongue.
"Yeah?" She called out into the empty house. "Coming now, Nez!" She looked back at the screen, told them, "talk later, gals, Nez wants me to help her in the basement," and hung up without waiting for a response, already knowing that Meghan would be commenting on how strange she was acting.
Madison and Meghan had been stuck to each other's waist since pre-school, grew up in close neighborhoods, and had practically been raised together. One time, Madison's family took Meghan to Disney Land, then straight to Universal Studios after. To say they were spoiled rotten in childhood because of the Delvaux family wealth was an understatement. It was only now approaching adult years was Meghan taking full advantage of her best friend's wealth- hinting off about getting her into Yale or Harvard, Madison smiled and nodded when she brought these things up, knowing full well Meghan didn't hold enough brain cells to even use a dishwasher.
The jangle of keys and the opening of the door sounded from downstairs. "The party's home! Maddie honey, you here?" Inez called, audibly struggling with grocery bags. "Coming!" she called back, skipping down the stairs two steps at a time. Inez relieved herself of one of the six bags she had carried from the car.
"When are you going to learn to walk down the stairs without the risk of breaking your damn neck?" she asked, walking to the kitchen and setting half of the bags on the counter, and doing the same with Maddie's bags. Madison laughed and shook her head, "when we confirm that the birds don't work for the bourgeoisie."
Inez rolled her eyes and pulled Madison into a hug. "Well, in that case, I may as well buy a neck brace and put the hospital on speed dial."
Madison gave a real laugh this time and pulled away, throwing a damp washcloth at Inez's face. "Megan facetimed me earlier with Linda, Karlie, Houston, Seoul and London.
Inez pulled a face, "yeah, and how did that turn out?" Madison sighed, "she asked me if she could take Dylan to prom."
Her stepmom stopped unpacking and lurched into deep thought. "Why are all your friends named after cities?" Madison was about to continue when she stopped to think about the question.
"Back to the topic, Nez."
Inez’s eyes widened in shock. "She did not, did she?" Madison nodded carefully, bracing herself for Inez launching into a huge monologue, as she often did when something morally wrong happened. "After everything that we've done for that girl- everything that you've done for that girl, this is how she repays you?" Inez barely stopped to breathe. "She has known about our plans to move here since last Summer! The sneaky little bug kept this behind your back and knew it would be safe to tell you that she was going to steal Dylan from you as soon as you were a safe distance away-"
Madison promptly stopped her, knowing this could and would go on all night. "I'm not as bothered as I should be, Nez. Dylan and I were drifting even before the move. I think this is just my final sign that we just aren't meant to be- God, I always knew nothing serious would become of Dylan and me," she admitted, sipping on a diet coke that Inez had just slid down the countertop. Her stepmother pursed her lips, her incredible dark brown eyes glazing over as they always did when she fell deep into thought, as Madison often admired them doing so when she was trying to find a solution to a particularly difficult business situation, then, within seconds, bounced back out of it once again.
Inez presented an envelope to Madison, addressed to her. "Well, this might bring your spirits up at least," she placed in front of Madison. "I just know it is what it is."
Madison's jaw dropped as she read the letter.
Months ago, while they still lived in Florida, Madison's tutor convinced her to take part in a writing competition. The competition was hosted by one of New York's most prestigious publication companies, namely by their founder; Mallorie Whyte, possibly one of the most sought after and revered journalists in the Western Hemisphere. Madison completely worshipped the woman. Whyte being a first generation French American was the main factor in inspiring Madison to learn the language; not for the benefit of her Senegalese brother.
But he did not need to know that.
Inez spoke again, mainly just to make sure that Madison hadn't become paralyzed from shock. "Is she telling you to buy a damn dictionary or was your spelling fine?” Inez teased. There was no response, but Madison was finished reading, and Inez became heart-scared that she would lick the page.
Madison was dumbfounded for a few more seconds. "I got first place in the contest. She wants me to come to New York and meet her! Bloody hell, she thinks I could help her out with new ideas?" Maddie took another break before screaming the house down. "The Mallorie Whyte wants me because she thinks I could help her-"
She completely froze up in shock, her frightened stepmother running behind her in case she fell backwards. "Three weeks?!" Madison screeched, loud enough to wake up the dead. Inez almost jumped from her skin, laughing when she recovered.
"Three weeks, Maddie! We have plenty of time," she attempted to reason, even though trying to calm Madison down when she was as excited as this was next to impossible.
Madison looked highly offended. "Three weeks? Do you see the state of this house? It needs to be perfect!"
The house was next to gleaming spotless.
Inez rolled her eyes and tugged Madison's belt loop as she was about to run into the hall. In her lifetime, she had met many people that she could consider crazy, but no one came as close to her stepdaughter when she was fangirling over Mallorie Whyte. "Yes, honey that's all well and good," Inez said, attempting to calm down the lunatic in front of her, "but in the meantime, I want you to tidy your bedroom, do your homework and do some studying."
Madison nodded obediently, grabbed her Cola, and ran upstairs, careful not to spill anything on the grey carpet. The fragrance of her apple blossom burning in an incense bowl wafted around the room, and her speaker was set to play music from her playlist when it detected motion in the room. The past few moments of excitement had wiped what had happened before the letter out of her mind.
Dylan.
Meghan had practically taken Dylan away from her- not that she cared, not now anyway. Mallorie freakin' Whyte had sent her a handwritten letter for Christ's sake, she wasn't going to be moping over a boy that her supposed best friend has had her eyes on for months. She had known since before announcing the move that the boy was falling under Meghan's spell, she had seen it; the messages, the winks and the giggles, the almost-too-close kiss under the stairway. She was never ignorant to the fact that there was something between Dylan and Meghan going on behind her back- they were both horrible liars and barely tried to cover it up- she just did her best to pretend nothing had happened.
It's not as if she wasn't the jealous type- she used to be- Dylan had been around most of her friendship group while she was crushing on him. She had just grown an indifference to seeing him flirt with other girls. She had grown used to it.
The notification of her computer sounded, distracting herself from her slightly depressing thoughts. It was an email notification, from Mallorie Whyte herself. Madison almost fainted at the sight of it. Not only had she just received a written letter, but she had also taken time to contact online. Madison caught her breath at the possibility of having a conversation with this woman three weeks before they met, she opened the email, scanning every word;
Madison,
I apologize for reaching out to you in such an informal manner, but I just couldn't wait to get into correspondence with you sooner! Your entry into our contest here at Whyte’s Journalism and Publications utterly rocked my soul at the core, your work blooms amazingly at your young age.
The reason I picked your entry was that after many hours of reading and re-reading hundreds of thousands of entries, I realized that yours spoke to me in a way that no other one did. The beauty of your language and knowledge of how our world and society works touched me in a way no other did- heart-breaking, yet somehow warming, in the same way, to know that there are still people in this world who still have a love for life.
I noted in your information folder that Halloween was your least favourite holiday- a complete juxtaposition of my own opinion. Samhain is the best time of year- and I am excited to spend this glorious time of year with you and your family starting next weekend, as I've just finished sorting arrangements with Ms. Inez.
Best regards and wishes, and excitement to meet you,
Mallorie Whyte.
Inez smiled to herself from downstairs, setting her drink down and running up the stairs having heard the rather obvious sound of Madison's delighted squeal and subsequent crash on the floor.

Mexico’s reputation as an alluring travel destination both before and during the pandemic has met a sobering reality: Despite growing vaccine efforts, the coronavirus is surging, especially in tourist hot spots.
Though the U.S. land border with Mexico has been closed to nonessential travel since the start of the pandemic, vacationers can fly into the country opening the door to unvaccinated travelers who might pass the virus in Mexico to a Mexican citizen.
But those risks didn’t deter the more than 2 million Americans who visited Mexico in the first four months of this year. According to Mexican government statistics, they represent 76 percent of all international visitors arriving by air. Forward Keys, a service that analyzes flight data, found that air ticketing for American arrivals to Mexico is up nearly 32 percent in the third quarter of 2021, compared to the same period in 2019.
But infections in Mexico are also up — by about 85 percent in the first two weeks of July, according to data from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. In a recent news conference, Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico’s deputy health minister, confirmed a spike in infections that constitutes a third wave in the pandemic and the second in 2021.
Three of the five Mexican states with the highest rates of infection are popular with tourists, including Quintana Roo, home to Cancún and the Riviera Maya; neighboring Yucatán; and Baja California Sur, home to Los Cabos.
The latter leads all others in infection rates, with 47 cases per 100,000 people. The popular resort destination of Los Cabos, at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, accounts for 54 percent of the active cases in Baja California Sur.
“Covid is substantial down here,” said Jon Gabrielsen, an American living in Los Cabos. "Fellow Americans should understand they need to mask up.”
The recent rise in cases comes as Mexico races to acquire and distribute vaccines.
“Understandably, the health minister is talking about a new wave,” said Lin H. Chen, the immediate past president of the International Society of Travel Medicine and the director of the Mount Auburn Travel Medicine Center, noting that the variants, including the highly infectious Delta variant, have been found in Mexico.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts the threat level of the coronavirus in Mexico at Level 3 of 4, or High.
Red light, green light
Travelers bound for Mexico will find coronavirus precautions dictated by a cautionary stoplight system applied state-by-state and ranging from red — with maximum restrictions — to green, or fully open. While most of the country is in green, five states — Tamaulipas and Tabasco as well as Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo and Yucatán — are orange, the second highest level.
Under the orange designation, restaurants and hotels are restricted to 50 percent capacity, markets to 75 percent capacity and theaters and museums to 25 percent capacity, according to the U.S. embassy in Mexico. Mask mandates are in effect in many places.
The three tourist-heavy states say they are strictly abiding by health and safety protocols, including mask mandates, social distancing, curfews and banning large groups.
Still, reports on social media, including packed streets of revelers in Cancún, indicate some travelers are flouting the rules.
The tourism authority of Quintana Roo responded to an inquiry from The Times that the state government conducts random rapid testing in the nightclub area of downtown Cancún and has deployed workers to dispense hand sanitizer and masks.
“What impresses me here is how businesses, bars and restaurants have respected government protocols and, in some cases, exceeded them,” wrote David Saito-Chung, a financial writer based in Los Angeles who has vacationed in San José del Cabo several times since early 2020, in an email.
He estimated local compliance with the mask mandates in the area to be above 80 percent.
“Tourists here mostly go without a mask,” he added. “So, it makes me wonder if the chance of infection through close contact with other visitors is higher.”
Lori Speers, the owner of the Dallas-based travel agency Levarte Travel has sent hundreds of clients to Mexico since last summer, largely booking her groups in all-inclusive beach resorts where testing to date has been complimentary.
“During Covid, bookings never slowed down,” she said, noting that some resorts are planning to begin charging for the tests later this month, with rates running from $50 to $150.
In Los Cabos, Mr. Chung paid $40 for his Covid test.
Lynda Hower, a travel adviser based in Pittsburgh, was vacationing in the Cancún area with her family earlier this month. She said the airport customs lines were crowded with several flights landing at the same time, resulting in little social distancing
The state of Jalisco, home to Puerto Vallarta, is green on the stoplight system, and it’s not hard to spot a tourist in town, especially as travel has picked up this year.
“The majority are still masked down here and if someone is not masked, you can assume they are probably a tourist,” said Robert Nelson, a California native who lives in Puerto Vallarta and runs the subscription website Expats in Mexico. “We are working hard to get more people vaccinated, but we need a little help from the folks visiting to abide by the local regulations.”
In San Miguel de Allende, the popular colonial town in Guanajuato in central Mexico, public statues are dressed in masks and anyone entering the central plaza must pass through an arch that mists sanitizer. Local police admonish visitors to wear or pull up their masks and have been known to take scofflaws to jail for flouting the rules.
Ann Kuffner, an American retiree who has been living in San Miguel de Allende for the past three years says, “All Mexicans are wearing masks,” said Ms. Kuffner. “Some Americans aren’t, but personally, I think it’s rude. Wearing one is a sign of respect, and respect is an important thing in the Mexican culture.”

This is kind of incredibly random but I need to talk about the tpw trilogy bc I'm going insane SO I'm abit bummed out that we don't know how rin managed to survive? Like ok she's the last speerly but HOW omg is tearza never going to make another appearance bc she's cool af and I just wish some of the mythological elements in the first book like the HEXAGRAMS (so cool????) Will make a reappearance in tbg but I'm so scared it won't :(
And I'm sorry, but I'm not done bc I'm way too high strung waiting for tbg! I'm also hoping ms kuang goes further with the LITERAL SOULMATE bond between kitay and rin than just being able to inflict pain on one another like I'm not saying they shouldn't need to communicate LOL I just kinda wish that there will be more references to how they understand each other perfectly without needing to really physically interact jfc ok the wait is ruining (runin-g HA) me lol
don’t worry i love talking about the poppy war trilogy so i really don’t mind at all! under the cut because i talk too much lol
i think that there’s a chance we might learn more about rin’s origins in the last book. i think that with her going back to the south and her province and her “roots” in a way and the closeness to her foster life, it presents the narrative with a good oportunity to delve into that. who were rin’s parents? how did they or rin survived/left speer? how did she came to the fang’s care? i sure hope we get more on rin’s past as well, you’re not alone in this. now about tearza, i do agree that she’s pretty cool and hopefully we do see more of her specially considering how thematic to the story it is the contrast between her and rin and their respectives choices regarding the phoenix. we know what tearza’s choice lead to so what about rin’s choice? what will be the price for that? so much of the mythology of this story is so cool!!!! i love it so much! the whole shamanism and gods and power and stuff is just so fucking awesome lol i love everything about it and there’s a lot i would die to know more about, but i can only hope for the best when it comes to the last book of this crazy trilogy. interesting that you think rin and kitay understand each other perfectly, because to me they are not like chaghan and qara and what makes the bond work is not their level of understanding but how they can balance each other. i’m not saying that they don’t understand each other, they do but just not in a deep level such as the twins and their bond. but that is not to say that i’m not dying over this lmao like rin and kitay’s bond is something so precious to me and i’m super worried to be honest because these children must be protected and kitay poor boy is probably in for some shit :( all this aside though, maybe the level of the bond is something that develops with time as well? maybe we didn’t see much of it because it was still very new to them and not something they fully explored yet. also on this, the twins both were shamans and kitay is not. and different kinds of shamanism may interfere on the bond? the phoenix is a god of destruction but chaghan was into some other level stuff so who knows... much to think about on this and at least for the bond i’m sure we will get more of it on burning god :))

Day 29:  #mayvinylchallenge : Band You Want To See Live Post Quarantine Being a musician, I am missing playing shows. And that's saying A LOT, as my natural inclination is to ULTRASLOTH. Also, 2020 was a promising year at first, full of shows that I personally wanted to see, it being a few years since I had been to a show for pure enjoyment. With most of those plans either dashed or TBA-schedule style, I look forward to a concert-going future. The band that I want to see the most post quarantine is: ☆KHRUANGBIN☆ ( @khruangbin ) Since I stumbled upon "Evan Finds The Third Room", I have been a Khruangbin fan. From Texas, the psychedelic trio has been making a big name for themselves. With their trippy-chill and cinematic instrumentation, their tightly blended vocals, and the trademark wigs delights a live crowd every time. With 2 LPs, a remix dub album and an EP in collaboration with Leon Bridges, Khruangbin is set to release their new album "Mordechai" later in 2020. Already two singles in, I am hooked on the dopeness that means Airplane in Thai, y'all. Now, we get to the album in question, which is also a...wait for it... VINYL UPDATE!!! 🔺️ Khruangbin - Hasta El Cielo [2019] Essentially a dub remix album of their 2018 release, "Con Todo El Mundo", the album is the "Love and Dancing" of the Khruangbin universe. Ahhh...me and my Human League references... I love this band. DJ's drums are tight and coins well spent, never overplaying, always staying in the pocket. Mark Speers guitar is a trippy soul spaghetti western Ernie Isley type! And my favorite, Ms. Laura Lee ( @lauraleezy ), is the queen of Bass & Style, all day! One of my favorite bassists of all time. (Pictured is my SX GG2 electric guitar, as I heard Laura plays an SX bass (albeit modified)...so word up!) Airline Shares Drop Sharply After Trump Imposes Travel Limits
The 30-day ban on most travelers from the Continent because of the coronavirus fueled new concern for the industry. Norwegian is temporarily laying off half its staff.

March 12, 2020Updated 1: 47 p.m. ET
Airline stocks tumbled on Thursday after President Trump prohibited most travelers from 26 European countries from visiting the United States for 30 days.
United Airlines and Delta Air Lines were down by more than 10 percent at 1 p.m. and American Airlines was down about 5 percent.
Already reeling from a steep decline in bookings because of the coronavirus outbreak, the airlines now stand to lose millions of dollars in revenue from a halt to trans-Atlantic flights, which account for a big chunk of their international business.
“Suspending travel on such a broad scale will create negative consequences across the economy,” said Alexandre de Juniac, the chief executive of the International Air Transport Association, an industry group. “Governments must recognize this and be ready to support” the industry.
According to the association, about 200,000 flights carried passengers between the United States and 26 countries targeted in Mr. Trump’s order last year, averaging about 550 flights carrying 125,000 travelers per day.
Over the next four weeks, the ban would affect more than 6,700 flights, in each direction, according to an analysis by OAG, an aviation data provider.
Delta is the airline most hurt by the ban, operating 17 percent of affected flights, according to OAG. United is next, with 14 percent, followed by Lufthansa, with 13 percent. American ranked fourth, operating about 8 percent of affected flights.
Confusion reigned after Mr. Trump’s announcement, with frantic travelers struggling to understand the consequences of the ban and airlines racing to adjust operations on little notice ahead of its implementation on Friday night.
“This action will hit U.S. airlines, their employees, travelers and the shipping public extremely hard,” said Nicholas Calio, president of Airlines for America, an industry group. “However, we respect the need to take this unprecedented action and appreciate the administration’s commitment to facilitate travel and trade.”
But others in the industry were more critical. Sara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants, the union representing flight attendants at 20 airlines, including United, said in an interview that the airline industry was “pretty blindsided” by Mr. Trump’s announcement.
“It created total pandemonium,” Ms. Nelson said. “Airline employees had no idea what this meant and for some it was completely disrupting their lives. They weren’t even sure if they were going to have a job in the next 24 hours or get home.”
Among flight attendants, there is widespread fear about job losses, she added. “The trajectory that this is on right now is beyond job loss, it’s about whether or not the industry can actually operate,” Ms. Nelson said. “You can’t operate a flight when no one wants to be on it.”
Even before the ban, investors were reassessing the financial prospects of airlines, several of which sought bankruptcy protection in the last two decades.
“The airlines are in cash preservation mode, and we fully expect to see credit facilities extended and increased in the next week,” Helane Becker, an airline analyst with Cowen, wrote in a research note on Thursday. “We previously stated U.S. airline bankruptcies were unlikely and in the near-term that still remains the case BUT if bookings do not improve in the next three months things could deteriorate quickly.”
United borrowed $2 billion this week and Delta raised $1 billion last week. American raised $500 million two weeks ago.
Delta said on Wednesday night that it would waive change fees for all customers traveling to, from or through Europe and the United Kingdom through May. American Airlines, which operates 15 daily flights from the parts of Europe affected by the ban, said that it was “committed to taking care of any affected customers by assisting them with rebooking” and that it was reaching out to those affected.
Travel and tourism between the United States and Europe, including areas not covered by the ban, is a business totaling roughly $130 billion annually, according to U.S. government data.
Trans-Atlantic flights accounted for about 17 percent of United’s 2019 passenger revenues, or $7.3 billion. For Delta, the share was 15 percent, or $6.3 billion, and for American it was 11 percent, or $4.6 billion.
After the ban was announced, Norwegian Air said it would temporarily lay off half of its staff and ground 40 percent of its long-haul flights and 25 percent of shorter flights.
“This is an unprecedented situation and our main priority continues to be the care and safety of our customers and colleagues,” Jacob Schram, the company’s chief executive, said in a statement. “The new restrictions imposed further pressure on an already difficult situation. We urge international governments to act now to ensure that the aviation industry can protect jobs and continue to be a vital part of the global economic recovery.”
Last week, an international airline group estimated that the virus could wipe out as much as $113 billion in airline revenue worldwide, a forecast made before Mr. Trump’s travel restrictions on Europeans and other limits by countries including Israel, Kuwait and Spain.
“Airlines will need emergency measures to get through this crisis,” Mr. de Juniac said, calling on governments around the world to consider extending credit to airlines or reducing taxes and other costs.
In addition to Mr. Trump’s travel ban affecting the 26 European countries that make up the Schengen Area, the State Department warned Americans that they should reconsider all international travel, the most severe caution it can offer short of “do not travel.”
At an investor conference on Tuesday, the chief executives of Delta, United and American said that years of streamlining operations had prepared them to weather the effects of a crisis like the coronavirus outbreak.
United’s president, Scott Kirby, said that the company’s net bookings to Europe were already down 100 percent in recent days, about half of that coming from cancellations. The airline, he said, was preparing for its worst-case scenario — a sustained decline in revenue for the rest of the year — even though it didn’t expect that to happen.
“The financial impact of our dire scenario is worse than the post-9/11 decline in demand,” he said. “We, of course, hope that it will be better, but we’re not willing to count on that.”
Natalie Kitroeff contributed reporting.

What is a coronavirus? It is a novel virus named for the crownlike spikes that protrude from its surface. The coronavirus can infect both animals and people and can cause a range of respiratory illnesses from the common cold to lung lesions and pneumonia.
How contagious is the virus? It seems to spread very easily from person to person, especially in homes, hospitals and other confined spaces. The pathogen can travel through the air, enveloped in tiny respiratory droplets that are produced when a sick person breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes.
Where has the virus spread? The virus, which originated in Wuhan, China, has sickened more than 127,800 in at least 111 countries and more than 4,700 have died. The spread has slowed in China but is gaining speed in Europe and the United States. World Health Organization officials said the outbreak qualifies as a pandemic.
What symptoms should I look out for? Symptoms, which can take between two to 14 days to appear, include fever, a dry cough, fatigue and difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. Milder cases may resemble the flu or a bad cold, but people may be able to pass on the virus even before they develop symptoms.
How do I keep myself and others safe? Washing your hands frequently is the most important thing you can do, along with staying at home when you’re sick and avoiding touching your face.
How can I prepare for a possible outbreak? Keep a 30-day supply of essential medicines. Get a flu shot. Have essential household items on hand. Have a support system in place for elderly family members.
What if I’m traveling? The C.D.C. has advised against all non-essential travel to South Korea, China, Italy and Iran. And the agency has warned older and at-risk travelers to avoid Japan. The State Department has advised Americans against traveling on cruise ships.
How long will it take to develop a treatment or vaccine? Several drugs are being tested, and some initial findings are expected soon. A vaccine to stop the spread is still at least a year away.

Ex-MS Manager Barred Over Churning In HSN Founder's Account
A former Morgan Stanley branch manager has accepted an industry bar over a case that involved excessive trading in the account of Roy Speer, the ailing, elderly co-founder of the Home Shopping Network. Terry Lee McCoy consented to a Finra action implementing an industry bar and issuing a $75,000 fine in a letter accepted Friday by the regulator’s Department of Enforcement. From 1999 through his termination in 2016, McCoy was an employee of Morgan Stanley, during part of that time he served as manager of the firm’s Palm Harbor, Fla. branch. According to Finra’s complaint, McCoy failed to supervise the sales practices of two brokers, Ami Forte and Charles Lawrence, while they allegedly engaged in unsuitable trading within the accounts of Speer, at the time a Morgan Stanley customer suffering from dementia. Finra alleges that Forte and Lawrence were able to rack up $9 million in commissions from more than 2,000 trades in six accounts in the 10 month period from September 2011 to July 2012, with many of the trades involving moving in and out of the same bonds over a few week or months. from FA News https://www.fa-mag.com/news/ex-morgan-stanley-branch-manager-barred-over-churning-in-home-shopping-network-founder-s-account-39297.html

Scandinavian Furniture Stores Things To Know
You may be shocked to hear that this outline development's excellence wasn't completely perceived until the 1950's. From that point forward, this outline has brought recognition by making one of a kind furniture and housewares for sale by furniture stores to essential and noticeable originators, who have made a check. Hemnes. Kivik. Ektorp. Regardless of the possibility which you aren't sure what these interesting sounding words mean, they natural to you. That is that they are the titles of couches and bookshelves from IKEA. But did you understand that its things are named by the store to its Nordic heritage after towns in Northern Europe as a gesture? Also, the banner that was Swedish roused that yellow and the blue logo? There's quite a good deal more to style than this chain store, though some might consider the fundamental blue and yellow structures of Ikea. Scandinavian furniture shops extend out to the nations of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland--supplying an immense and combined flavor that represents this outline development and can be portrayed moderation, usefulness and by straightforwardness. It's anything but our furniture choice has been affected by Scandinavian style that is difficult to overlook the amount. Such as Ikea, simple that is starkly outlines and clean lines are very popular to this point that they've progressed toward getting regular. In any case, what is the Scandinavian style, and for what reason did it wind up noticeably one of those configuration styles in the world? What is more, do we say we're currently doing it correctly? We should begin with the nuts and bolts. The style developed in the 1950s as a major facet of an innovative development in Nordic style (i.e. Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway) that organized capacity and reasonableness over value and extravagance. Set apart by pale colors materials, and leggy furniture, the trendy was to a great extent a reaction to the area's short days and long winters, which required insides that are fabulous. It's a adored among minimalists who acclaim its lack of whine and tout its influence on the current day improvement that is mid-century. In that capacity, the tasteful appears to be particularly trendy around the new year, when settlements are greatest for the mind. While there's a great deal of cover among day fitments style located in Scandinavian furniture shops, the biggest contrasts can be found from the light and shading palette. While Scandinavian interiors mean to expand daintiness in a space, mid-century present day interiors have a tendency to explore shades and operate fine and dandy in reduced light. "It is just as much a means of life as it's a look," says within originator Rachel Dougan, that owns ViVi Interiors in USA, Washington. "It is restrained. Seats, for instance, have more legs. I ponder internally, how easy is to store stuff underneath there? Be that as it may, the Scandinavian style has no place for mess since mess ruins the lines. It must be permitted to sit unbothered with the purpose that atmosphere and light can circle through it. It's optimistic." Try to not be scared, however. The Scandinavian design doesn't have to be corrected in complete -- it functions admirably with pieces -- and generally, the furniture is not as fragile as it looks. Loi Thai, that possesses a collectibles store that is Swedish says Scandinavian furniture will stand time's trial and is very tough. Configuration internet journals and magazines tend to affect design to look unimaginably perfect and pricey. Pictures indicate feature wood flooring, pre-assembled dividers, pendant crystal fittings that are sensational, and chambers overwhelmed with light. These understandings are sensible, so in case you're expecting to go elegant in your own house, simply recollect that it is high on the job, low. "The lounge area is an wonderful place to start," Mr Thai states. "One by one, swap out overpowering feasting seats for mild ones and mix an assortment of hues and materials. It'll feel welcoming and different." In spaces, keep away from a end to the bookshelves and dull mats, and instead spring to get a pale handwoven tangle, and a couple of fig trees that are pruned. Embellishments should be purposeful and few: aluminium light apparatuses and mirrors into ricochet bunches of pop yarn flame holders to get a little accent, and light around the room .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Consider presenting some high-differentiate manly elements to shield the space from appearing excessively ladylike, Ms. Dougan exhorts. "This appearance has a lot of pastels" she says, so include some differentiating components, as an instance, a crude wood foot stool or mechanical metal pendant lighting, or even a metallic piece; for example, an overwhelming golden clock. "Scandinavian furniture is exceptionally leggy" Ms. Dougan states. "In the event that you aren't careful, your entire family room will seem like it's loaded with twigs." Some could hint that it could possibly be that this is an immediate result of the icy weather. There's a greater amount of a motivator to make in your house to appear super a-la-mode about the grounds that unless you want to get frostbite or, even in a couple of sections of Norway, eaten by a bear. After all, that's not the entire story, says Aldric Speer, furniture gatherer. "This is on account that Scandinavian architects have been revealed they ought to dependably consider a question's capacity. The imperative of making something utilitarian was freeing: they determined something lovely to come out of it." In the realm of interior design "Scandinavian" has come to indicate a kind of delightful moderation: unfussy outlines and extravagant bends. It obliged to the Bauhaus school, which lectured the requirement of capacity. As Christina Schmidt, fellow benefactor of furniture shop Skandium, says: "Why have three glasses for water, milk and wine when you can have one?" Furniture has been, made by the pared-down, simple trendy, joined with an accentuation on quality workmanship out of the locale a prevalent decision for its advanced shopper. Late years have seen a resurgence in excitement by way of instance, the Drop Chair by Arne Jacobsen, although prices for model or rare pieces continue breaking records, for works of art. Significant Scandinavian furniture shops have declared ascents in the sums. In the Wright sales management firm of Chicago, the most costly things at any given point offered -- a Paavo Tynell light fixture that went for $85,000 and a couple of $75,000 Finn Juhl relax seats -- both went. The sweet spot in a plan is the interval between the late 60s and the 1930s. In 1932, the Social Democrats of Sweden came to control promising to clean up the living conditions lasted by the workers. They began http://www.thefreedictionary.com/scandinavian furniture stores immense scandinavian furniture stores building ventures where they introduced restrooms and twofold coated windows to every home; their mantra, "better everyday living for everyone", turned into an ideological touchstone for planners and founders all through the area. You can't separate the plan that is Scandinavian and the legislative issues, says Schmidt. "It is around a character, a people saying 'this is the way we live, together with those gauges' -- it is about pride." Diverse Scandinavian nations have their distinctive specialisms. "The vast majority of the best Scandinavian creators from the 60s are from Denmark. Swedish Ceramics are extremely solid contrasted with Danish. The increased part of the most significant glasswork craftsmen tends to originate from Finland." What is more, for why does the Scandinavian rationality result in such products that are beautiful? "It is easy," says Schmidt. "Simple things are great. They do not bother or make clamor in space. They are not there to be adored, they don't things, they don't mess. They feel great in their state -- they simply are."
