Michelle confirms that is the final film.
It's going to be a tough watch, but we can all get through it together, Downton Abbey clan. As Andrea Bocelli would say, it's time to say goodbye to the Crawley family [APA note: a cover of "Con te partirò (Time to Say Goodbye) was actually the music in ITV's trailer for S6. Whoops]. According to Michelle Dockery, the upcoming Downton Abbey 3 is going to serve a dual purpose of saying a fond farewell to the series, but in front of the camera, also saying cheerio to Dame Maggie Smith’s iconic role as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham. In an exclusive interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub to promote her role in the Mel Gibson thriller Flight Risk, Dockery opened up about the upcoming film, what it was like to return to the set one final time, and how the trilogy became an unexpected gift for the fans and cast alike.
While Downton has always been an ensemble piece, driven by its vast cast led by Dockery, Smith, Hugh Bonneville and more, Smith’s Dowager Countess has remained one of its most treasured characters, known for her razor-sharp wit and withering putdowns. Dockery spoke about the beauty of the story that would be told and said that the film was one that would be a gorgeous goodbye to Smith.
“It’s a beautiful film,” Dockery said. “For us, it was such a treat to be able to come back together again. It’s a real tribute to Maggie Smith, the film.” The return of Paul Giamatti, who first appeared as Harold Levinson, the uncle of Dockery's Lady Mary, in Season 4, is another fun surprise that she was able to shed light on.
“Working with Paul again was wonderful. He’s so much fun. And because he was already part of the family, it was lovely to have him back on set, so I’m really excited to see the final film."
“I think there was always an intention to do three films,” Dockery revealed. “I think the trilogy of films was an intention. But no, I’m not entirely sure. I guess that was what was thought of initially. But it’s amazing that we got to do that many films. I mean, we would have been very happy to do one, but the demand was to do more, and it’s been an incredible experience.”
For Dockery, the final day of filming was a bittersweet moment, and one she'll remember forever as she looks back on a hugely important time in her life. “For us, we’ve had so many last times,” she said, recalling the various finales they’ve filmed over the years, from the series to the previous films. “But this time around, I think we really relished every minute. It being the last, it felt really, really special. Like anything, when something comes to an end, it’s emotional but just such a happy place to be. It’s always been a very happy place to be and a wonderful thing to be part of for the last 15 years.”
While Dockery acknowledged that there was always the possibility of a Christmas special, that great staple of British television, with a wistful “You never know,” it’s clear that the cast and crew went into the film with the mentality that this was it for the Crawley family.

Tumblr really did not want to upload these, but here they are, Part 1 and Part 2. This is the best I can do quality wise.
Hi! I noticed that the series two deleted scenes video that you have linked doesn't seem to work here in England for some reason! If possible do you mind screen recording it or something and putting it on your page? No worries if not and Happy New Year! 🎉🎉
Hello there! I can try and see if I can upload it here myself, but I also might have to cut it into parts. I'll see what I can do ❤️

“The fact that Dame Maggie herself has now passed away since that time, I do think, has given a real added poignancy to a story that we would have planned anyway,” Downton Abbey executive producer Gareth Neame recently told TVLine while promoting Peacock’s The Day of the Jackal. “The loss of the Dowager, it now feels far more significant that you see actors playing characters mourning the family matriarch. But I also see actors mourning the matriarch of the show, and it feels more genuine and more meaningful.”
Echoing the sentiment he initially shared shortly after Smith’s death, Neame calls her loss “the end of an era,” adding that “we will never see the like of Dame Maggie Smith ever again.” He believes that the entire Downton Abbey cast and crew’s “huge respect for her … will come across in in the next movie.”

Big Downton Abbey fan here. Are you hearing anything about the third movie coming out next year? —Les The third movie, due out in September, is “charming, and funny… a real love letter to all those characters,” says longtime Downton producer Gareth Neame (also an EP on Day of the Jackal). “It has a big new principal plot, but actually is chockablock with character, with their individual stories, with romance and with comedy. It’s a real spectacle, and I think the fans, hopefully, will really enjoy it. We’re just about finished editing it.”

Along with this opportunity, the accomplished actress also wrapped up shooting the third Downton Abbey movie with the beloved cast in the summer. The last in the trilogy is set to premiere in theaters on September 12, 2025. Playing Mrs. Beryl Patmore, this will mark the end of an era.
While Nicol is tightlipped about what fans can expect to see in the movie, she did say it “was made with much love and commitment as always. I hope people like it,” The 71-year-old opened up about the filming experience. “It was a strange feeling on set because you realize this is the last time we’ll ever do it, and we’ve been doing it for 14 years,” she said. “That’s a long time and a very bonded family.”
As one would imagine, the loss of the legendary Maggie Smith in September hit Nicol and the other crew hard. She played Violet Crawley before the Dowager Countess of Grantham died in the second film. “To lose Maggie was terrible,” Nicol said.
She continued, “On the other hand, I think she wasn’t well and it wasn’t a nice way to exist. I’m a firm believer because this was drummed into me by doctor dad, which is just being around ill is not the way to live. I hope it was the right time for her to move on. {Maggie} wasn’t in the {third and} last film obviously because {Violet} died in the last one. She was missed because she was a great person to have around. She was highly entertaining and greatly loved by all of us. There was a tinge of sadness for sure.”
Thinking of the holidays, Christmas was always a special time for Downton Abbey, A show known for its yuletide episodes throughout the British drama’s six seasons. Nicol liked it because this often meant a change of scenery.
“Often I’d get a trip to the house,” she said. “The place that is Downton Abbey was probably an hour away from London. Because I was constantly in the kitchen, quite rightly because she would be, but I didn’t get trips over there often. When it was Christmas there all seemed to be a party or something around the Christmas tree or a family get-together I got to join them. I’ve got memories of a big Christmas in that big Abbey. It looks very nice at Christmas. It suits it very well. I’ve got some good memories there and filming those."

Hugh Bonneville has revealed that the third Downton Abbey film – which is being billed as the franchise's last – will be a fitting tribute to the late Maggie Smith.
Speaking on Virgin Radio UK, Bonneville revealed more about the movie, saying: "We finished a third – and I think probably final – Downton Abbey film this summer, which will come out next September. That is a wonderful sort of closing off of all the stories, so it’s a proper film for the fans."
He went on: "It’s very much set in the house and saying goodbye to all these characters and we obviously say goodbye to Dame Maggie, which was very poignant on screen and now in real life. She’ll be sorely missed. But the final film will obviously be a great lasting tribute to her."
