The apartment is barren. There are no posters on the walls. No pictures anywhere. Not even frames with stock pictures. Something a hopeful person would get. Forget to replace the generic faces with people they knew.

Instead of hope, there was nothing.

No decorations of any kind. No folded-up flags on the mantle, inside a glass case. A gift many proud but reluctant to talk about the past type vets have. There are no magnets on the fridge holding up takeout menus. Lists. Notes. Just a clean white surface of a fridge that had seen better decades.
