In honor of The Mindy Project coming back today, I will talk a little bit about my lifelong shipping sorrow: Mindy/Jody!

I feel like Mindy/Jody had such wonderful establishment and build up in the fourth season of the show. We saw the Mindy/Danny relationship slowly implode as they discovered they weren’t compatible in terms of what they wanted out of a family life, and I just really liked how Jody was there to support Mindy and admire her for the person she was at a time and pair up with her in a new business venture when Mindy was being told by Danny that she was failing as a mother and a woman because she didn’t want to give up her ambitions to be a traditional stay-at-home wife and mom.

I also just think that Mindy and Jody have super enjoyably complementary personalities. They are blunt and self-centered and ambitious and shallow and materialistic and fabulously dressed, and I like the idea of Mindy having a partner who shares those traits rather than scolding her for being that way. Could it potentially be a disaster? Would they be the nightmare of all other human beings? Sure. But I like the idea of them just being terrible kindred spirits together. I think it would yield a lot of comedy, and it just seems like it would be inherently suited to who Mindy is. (I have compared a potential Mindy/Jody relationship to Mindy and Peter’s friendship before, and I will do it again here! I think Mindy feels most at home with people who are willing to be delightful garbage with her, and I think there’s nothing wrong with that.)

Now that season six has started, I get the sense that the theme of Mindy not being able to fit into the ~ideal domestic woman~ role is going to continue in her (presumably not long for this world) relationship with Ben. She just doesn’t want to be tied down in this conventional way, which I think is a real discovery for her in a very moving way, since she has always shaped her life around assuming that being a married, traditional wife and mom is the ultimate happily ever after. I think that we might see her discover in this season that actually, being free of that expectation is the true happily ever after. And I think that out of all the love interests she’s had, Jody is the one with whom she could be a couple without running into that obstacle, because he too is someone who is really set in his ways as a single, independent person. I could see them being, like, a weirdo couple with their own separate residences who never get married, but have their own specific thing that works for them.

I know that it won’t go that way, because the show did such a 180 due to the wrath of the fandom and Jody’s character development went bye bye, but I still feel like it would be unique and satisfying, and I would love to move to the alternate universe where I could see it happen upon my tv screen. I am not entirely sure if Mindy and Danny will get back together at the end of the show (I personally hope not because to me, there’s no way that the show could fix what Danny put Mindy through, especially if Chris Messina won’t be around for multiple episodes); I guess it’d be good for the majority of the fandom if that happened, since they’re the preferred otp.

Meanwhile, I will just be over here daydreaming of literally the least popular ship to ever grace Hulu.com and maybe the world!

Mindy and Jody saying goodbye to each other could/should have been more emotional, I mean they had feelings for each other in season 4 and even if it got ruined they still remained friends (tho we didn’t see much of it) so I was hoping that their farewell would have been better than that.

Why do people keep acting like Mindy and Danny are the perfect couple, like otp of your life? As though Danny didn’t try to force her to quit her job and leave behind her dream so that she could be a house wife, and tried to impregnate her without her knowledge and consent. Or string her along knowing that he didn’t want to get married and for a long time was not even open to the idea, despite knowing that’s what she wanted. Like he isn’t some deep down “women shouldn’t have jobs, they only should take care of my kid” misogynist asshole. Like no. The more I watch this show the more I know Danny is 100% wrong for Mindy. Say whatever the hell you want about Jody but he has shown far more respect for Mindy and what she wants in his short time on the show than Danny has the entire series. But also Mindy x Ben forever.
