i don't want to be an EVIL scientist per se but how can i give off that slightly chaotic vibe as a physics student, most of the stuff we do is on paper <:)

hmm... well... i’m not really good at articulating what constitutes “chaotic vibes” specific to scientists or mad scientists or whatever.

i can, however, say that if you’re looking to appear more spontaneous and “weird” to other people, you should definitely consider whats holding you back from that. are you socially anxious? afraid people will judge you for your genius? forget them. do what makes you happy and fulfill your own desires. say strange things. commit, and don’t be afraid of living the life you want to live, i guess

Does the snow blight reside in the permafrost during cold seasons? It would make sense that it never appears in winter months because it’s laying dormant, but when the permafrost melts during the hotter seasons it becomes active and starts infecting? That would explain why it doesn’t typically appear in areas where you don’t get snow or frost during the cold season!

It doesn’t get nearly cold enough in the region for permafrost - but it does go under a relatively dormant phase in the colder parts of winter. However, the significantly bigger factor in infections not happening during the winter... Is that the cephalopods just don’t go outside! It’s too cold out for them so they don’t go traipsing around accidentally coming in contact with infected soil, dormant fungus or not. If the disease was still common in recent years someone would have gone “hey wait a second” pretty quickly but. Alas

The main reason the fungus is confined to colder areas is that there are A Lot of fungi in the warm, moist islands, and there’s plenty of other species that just.... do better than them most of the time. Many of its main competitors do poorly in temperatures below freezing and die off during cold snaps, clearing the way for the Blight to bounce back again once they ‘wake up’ in spring. Most infections happen in late spring and early summer where they’re having the Best time. (theres plenty of other cold tolerant fungi in its range, of course, just not many that compete with the blight)

If splatearth enters into a warmer period without cold enough winters, the Blight fungus would probably die out without the winter thanos snap to help keep other fungus species out of its zone. That, or the increased international travel might bring in a hardier cold tolerant fungus that out-competes them and may or may not also infect cephalopods. People wouldn’t notice for quite some time, probably.

Barney gets info dumped by his bf

Barney has figured out one thing-- nothing is as incomprehensible as it seems, even when you know nothing about it. It's a matter of asking questions and, perhaps, having a single Gordon Freeman to cover every inch of the diner booth table with papers in an effort to visually explain the concepts. He does his best to follow along-- they definitely got past Hadrons and Leptons, which apparently contained several other things.

But now Gordon seemed to be explaining particle collisions-- something about strangeness and how it might be conserved. Kaons were scribbled down on the paper as well.

"So, if I'm followin' right, boss," Barney starts, waiting for Gordon to look at him. There's an excited, happy flare in the other's eyes, which makes this all worth it. "These kaons- strange charges, particles, whatsits- are created by the... Protons? Yeah? Protons colliding?"

A nod. "Strong nuclear interaction. Kaons are mesons."

Which fell into the Hadron category, if he remembered right. Barney leans forward, pressing a self-serving victory kiss to Gordon's temple.

"Let's go. Tell me more about these weird little bastards."
