THE FORTUNE OF THREE
The life of Maria Gomez de Sotomayor: The Ottoman slave who had suffered great dispair in both Ottoman lands and outdoor lands.
Tumblr media
Early Life
The date of birth nor origin of Maria is certain. Unlike Catalina, who has a fitted name for a Hungarian-origin woman, same for Angelina with her Greek/Byzantine influenced name, Maria’s name is too relatively common in both Hungarian and Greek areas to be certain of her origin, though it is possibly more likely that she is of Hungarian origin.
Maria is often regarded by some historians as the sister of Angelina of Greece, both regarded as Hungarian ladies who were captured by Ottoman raiders. While some historians suggest they could be siblings, others argue that they may have been referred to as "lady sisters" in a more metaphorical sense rather than literally.
Their differing names, Maria being called “Maria de Ungría”(Maria of Hungary) and Angelina referred to as “Angelina de Grecia” (Angelina of Greece) add to the confusion surrounding their identities. Additionally, some theories propose that they might have different mothers, as in Castile, children were often identified by their mother's nationality/ethnicity.
However, the odds that two sisters from different mothers could be captured in the same area at the same time and later reunited in an Ottoman harem is highly unlikely.
First Capture
Maria is believed to have been captured shortly after the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396. It is worth mentioning that she might have been captured at a different time and location, possibly during another raid by the Turks near their home borders.
She was likely a child when she was captured, as she would later be sent to King Henry III of Castile as a “gift” in 1402/1403, which suggests she could not have been too old (possibly in her mid-teens to early 20s by 1402).
Life in the Harem
Though captured and sent to the harem, Maria did not convert to Islam and remained a Christian throughout her enslavement.
Considering that all potential concubines of the Sultan had to be converted Muslims, it is safe to assume that Maria did not have to worry about concubinage duties.
Second Capture
Maria was either captured following the plunder of Bursa, five days after the Battle of Ankara, which took place on July 20, 1402, or sometime later in an unknown residence in Yenisehir, along with Olivera Lazarevic, her daughters, and other servants.
Payo Gomez de Sotomayor
Payo was one of the two ambassadors (the other being Hernan Sanchez de Palazuelos) sent from King Henry III of Castile to his correspondent, Timur, in 1402.
After their mission ended, Timur tasked the embassy with escorting Christian maidens from the harem of Sultan Bayezid I, which he had decided to send to Henry.
As a result, Catalina, Angelina, and Maria were given to and escorted by Payo and his partner. It is unknown when exactly they left, but they were certainly in Castile by early 1403.
The Incident In Jodar
According to a folk love tale, upon passing through Jodar, Payo, who had been traveling with Maria for some months, realized his feelings for her by a fountain in Jodar.
Argote de Molina, a Spanish historian, quoted a somewhat unknown poem which seems to be from the point of view of Payo:
“Beside that fountain at Jódar,   The maid with beauteous eyes I saw.   I died by the wound they gave me,   And not one hour could I survive.”
This is likely nothing more than Argote’s attempt at romanticizing the true story, which caused a scandal, especially considering the anger that fueled Henry upon learning this information.
Whether in a soft poem or not, a relationship with a maiden who was entrusted to you is completely inappropriate. Additionally, it is unknown what the extent of their “relationship” was, nor if it was even consensual.
Arrival In Castile
Upon their arrival at the court of Henry III, Payo had to face the wrath of the King, who highly disapproved of his inappropriate relationship with Maria.
Wishing to avoid the consequences of his actions, Payo fled to his lands in Galicia and later to France.
In the meantime, some nobles did their best to mediate some sort of reconciliation between the two, a mediation which ultimately succeeded, as Don Payo Gomez de Sotomayor was recalled to court and married Maria by order of the King.
The Death of the King
King Henry, who acted as the guardian of Maria and her companions, passed away in 1406. With the King gone, Payo planned to annul his marriage to Maria on the grounds of “forced marriage,” since the late King had ordered him to marry her to rectify his actions.
He set his sights on a relative of an archbishop, a woman named Maior de Mendoza; a marriage with her would elevate his reputation and status.
It is unknown when the annulment was finalized, but it is certain that it was from Dona Maior de Mendoza that Payo welcomed his eldest son and future heir.
Later Life
Some historians believe that after her “divorce,” Maria worked as a servant in her former husband’s household, based on a document released by Payo in 1453.
In his will, he names a certain Maria as his servant:
“…regarding my estate, that both the legitimate heirs of my wife Dona Maior and Doctor Diego Albrea, who has received gains from Maria Gomez, my servant who has passed away…” - *Colección Diplomática De Galicia Histórica, Volumes 1-2
Considering “Maria” and “Gomez” are extremely common names in Spanish areas, and that Maria was buried in a convent a few leagues away from her former husband’s burial place, it is possible that he could be referring to a completely different Maria Gomez.
There was no true reason for Maria to end her life as his servant; upon annulment, it was his duty to return the dowry, which was likely sponsored by King Henry, allowing her to care for herself or even remarry if she wished.
It is much more plausible that upon her “divorce,” Maria’s dowry was returned to her at some point, and she might have used her resources to support herself and the convent in which she would later be buried in.

Meanwhile, in Villena...
The late afternoon action in the Alicante Challenger, more specifically in Pista Carlos Alcaraz, the court named after Carlos Alcaraz inaugurated in Villena, Alicante, with Jannik Sinner's presence in December 2023, continued with qualifier Justin Engel, who previously defeated wild card and 2024 US Open Boys' Singles champion Rafael Jodar 6-3, 6-3, taking on second seed Luca van Assche, who defeated qualifier Daniel Merida with an identical scoreline (6-3, 6-3) in the first round. This match might have had a chaotic start, but J. Engel finally got his groove at some point before the momentum started to steadily shift.
Initially, this was a nervy start from J. Engel, whose forehand errors caused L. van Assche to break early (1-0), followed by the latter's consolidation to 2-0. The German qualifier trailed by 2 points before he finally put his name on the board (2-1), and it took several games before his forehand winner put himself 2 points ahead in the sixth game, but L. van Assche regained his range by holding his serves to 4-2.
Afterward, things started to go slightly downhill for J. Engel. After several errors forced the deuce, most likely as L. van Assche's preceding shot made the 17-year-old err his extra shot, another forehand error created L. van Assche's set point in the ninth game. Ultimately, a double fault converted the French second seed's set point, breaking for the first set 6-3 to put himself one set away, technically, from the quarterfinals.

MAIDSTONE STROKE GROUP
JUNE NEWSLETTER 2023
HEART OP AT 101
OAP back home after having new valve fitted
A WOMAN aged 101 has become one of the oldest patients in the UK to get a new heart valve. Ruth Shire was back at home just days after life saving keyhole surgery.
The retired nurse was diagnosed with aortic stenosis, a narrowed heart valve, after becoming increasingly breathless last year. She was delighted to be told just before Christmas she could have a Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), which inserts a tube through the top of the leg. Last month, she become the oldest person to get a new valve fitted at her local Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and was HOME three days later. Ruth admitted: “I had great reservations as regards the consequences of stroke and other complications. It shows this procedure can be done in elderly people quite safely, especially people like me with my 101 years.” Daughter Miriam added: “Since becoming a widow 18 years ago, my mother has held on to her independence with fierce determination. She still lives in her own house and runs a very active life. “It means so much to know that she, and we, will have some bonus quality time.” Around 300,000 Brits suffer from aortic stenosis. It is hoped TAVI – recently rolled out to patients of all ages – could help save many of them. Dr Sagar Doshi, who led the surgery, said: “We’re delighted with the outcome for Mrs Shire and very pleased that we helped maintain her well being and independence.”

Snacking on walnuts can boost heart
EATING a handful of walnuts a day could stave off cardiovascular disease. They help boost bacteria in the gut, with knock-on benefits for the heart. Scientists found they are rich in polyunsaturated fats and omega fatty acids that fight bad cholesterol. A US team analysed faecal samples from a trial of 35 participants at high risk of cardiovascular disease on different diets. They found a diet incorporating whole walnuts increases absorption of healthy plant polyphenols and antioxidants. Lead author Mansi Chandra, of Juniata College, US, said of the gut study: “Our findings represent a new mechanism through which walnuts may lower cardiovascular disease risk.                 Article from daily paper
DVT
DEEP vein thrombosis is a potentially deadly blood clot that develops within a deep vein in the body. DVT Awareness Month was March and medical experts hope that spreading details about this commonly occurring condition can save lives. But what exactly is DVT? Sindy jodar, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “DVT is a blood clot in one of the deep veins in the leg, usually the calf, and it affects tens of thousands of people each year in the UK. “It must be treated urgently as there is a risk the clot will travel to the lungs and block a blood vessel – known as a pulmonary embolism. “Symptoms include swelling, throbbing or cramping pain in one leg usually in the calf or thigh. “The skin can be warm, red or darkened around the pain. You may see swollen veins that are hard or sore to touch. “These symptoms can also happen in the arm or abdomen if that is where the clot is. “Certain situations that limit movement also bring a higher risk. For example, being confined to a bed or going on a long journey of more than three hours by car, plane or train.” If you have symptoms call your GP or 111 as soon as possible. If you also have breathlessness or chest pain, you should call 999 or go to A&E for urgent treatment as this indicates you might have a pulmonary embolism. DVT risk is higher for people over 60, if you are overweight, take the contraceptive pill, are treated with hormone replacement therapy, are pregnant, have cancer or heart failure, or have varicose veins.

Tinnitus
A Tinnitus is a sound, or sounds, inside the head created by your own hearing system. It is a symptom and not a condition. So wherever possible, it is important to find out why the tinnitus occurs. Most commonly, it is after attending a concert or exposure to loud noises, or simply as a consequence of age-related decline in normal hearing. There can be medical causes for tinnitus, for example Meniere’s disease
( an inner-ear problem that can cause dizzy spells ), wax blocking the ear canal, damage to the ear drum causing scarring ( otosclerosis ). Rarer causes include anaemia, thyroid disease, use of aspirin or conditions affecting the brain. Treating tinnitus is about symptom control, unless you can identify the underlying cause and fix it. For people with no underlying reversible medical cause, treatment revolves around providing alternative sounds to create a distraction and reduce focus on the tinnitus noise. For those with even mild hearing loss, hearing aids can help with symptoms as they boost normal sounds and mask tinnitus sounds.

Tech joy on health
BRITISH scientists have developed technology which could identify and treat a range of diseases much earlier. Experts have worked out how to isolate a single protein – 10,000 times thinner than a human hair – and see how it acts and alters over time. Changes to proteins occur before illness so it means researchers can now see how they affect conditions such as Parkinson’s – and how they react to different drugs.
Prof Mohsen Rahmani, of Nottingham Trent University, said: “This could play a key role in improving survival rates.”

Arcturus
A NEW Covid strain has been detected in the UK, with the symptoms including conjunctivitis and red and itchy eyes. The Arcturus virus is a subvariant of Omicron, which first hit the UK in late 2021. It is now present in more than 30 countries, including Britain, but case numbers remain low. Dr Kenny Livingstone, chief medical officer at ZoomDoc Health, which provides same day doctors’ letters, explained: “This new strain has been spreading across india at a rapid pace and is now beginning to spread across the US and the UK. “The most common symptoms are quite bad conjunctivitis or red and inflamed eyes. That is in addition to all the other usual Covid-19 symptoms, such as a sore throat, blocked or runny nose, headache, high temperature, feeling exhausted or a new and continuous cough.” There is no heightened cause for concern in the UK, where there were just 30 cases in London last month. But some experts have encouraged us to wear masks on public transport to help limit the potential spread of the virus. Dr Livingstone added: “The question of whether it’s any worse than other variants is still to be understood. “The new spring vaccine is coming out and we would advise people, especially those who are immuno – compromised and the elderly, to get their booster when invited.” The NHS will contact those who are eligible when their seasonal booster is due. Advice for anyone with Covid remains that they should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for five days.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
EVERYONE over the age of 40 should have their blood pressure checked at least every five years. GP surgeries and some pharmacies and workplaces carry out free testing; you can also buy a monitor for home use. The results comprise two numbers – the top one (systolic pressure) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body; the bottom one (diastolic pressure) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels. Ideal blood pressure is between 90/60 and 120/80 (or below 150/90 for over eighties). However, if you are measuring your blood pressure at home, its slightly different; high blood pressure is considered to be an average of 135/85 for those aged under 80, or 145/85 for those aged 80 and over. If your reading is between 120/80 and 140/90, it means you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don’t take steps to reduce it.

Persistence of SARS-CoV-2 #RNA shedding and infectivity in immunized population: Prospective study along different epidemiological periods in Argentina
by Clara Theaux, Yamila Martin, Luciana Montoto Piazza, Gretel Wenk, Guillermo Notaristefano, Laura Miño, María Eugenia Sevilla, Valeria Aprea, Aldana Claps, Mercedes Nabaes Jodar, Dolores Acuña, Melina Salvatori, Laura Álvarez, María Eugenia Langan, Gabriela Turk, Ricardo Del Olmo, Mariana Viegas, Miriam Bruno, Vivian Bokser During the pandemic of COVID-19, numerous waves of infections affected the two hemispheres with different impacts on each country. Throughout these waves, and with the emergence of new variants, health systems and scientists have tried to provide real-time responses to the complex biology of SARS-CoV-2, dealing with different clinical presentations, biological characteristics, and clinical impact of these variants. In this context, knowing the extent period in which an infected individual releases infectious viral particles has important implications for public health. This work aimed to investigate viral #RNA shedding and infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 beyond 10 days after symptom onset (SO). A prospective multicenter study was performed between July/2021 and February/2022 on 116 immunized strategic personnel with COVID-19 diagnosed by RT-qPCR, with asymptomatic (7%), mild (91%) or moderate disease (2%). At the time of diagnosis, 70% had 2 doses of vaccines, 26% had 2 plus a booster, and 4% had one dose. After day 10 from SO, sequential nasopharyngeal swabs were taken to perform RT-qPCR, viral isolation, and S gene sequencing when possible. Viral sequences were obtained in 98 samples: 43% were Delta, 16% Lambda, 15% Gamma, 25% Omicron (BA.1) and 1% Non-VOC/VOI, in accordance with the main circulating variants at each moment. SARS-CoV-2 #RNA was detected 10 days post SO in 57% of the subjects. Omicron was significantly less persistent. Noteworthy, infective viruses could not be isolated in any of the samples. In conclusion, a 10-days isolation period was useful to prevent further infections, and proved valid for the variants studied. Recently, even shorter periods have been applied, as the Omicron variant is prevalent, and worldwide population is largely vaccinated. In the future, facing the possible emergence of new variants and considering immunological status, a return to 10 days may be necessary. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0285704&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr
