American Matt Quigley answers Australian land baron Elliott Marstons ad for a sharpshooter to kill the dingoes on his property. But when Quigley finds out that Marston’s real target is the aborigines, Quigley hits the road. Now, even American expatriate Crazy Cora can’t keep Quigley safe in his cat-and-mouse game with the homicidal Marston. Credits: TheMovieDb. Quigley Down Under is directed by Simon Wincer and written by John Hill. It stars Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo and Alan Rickman. Music is by Basil Poledouris and cinematography by David Eggby. Plot sees Selleck as Matthew Quigley, a Wyoming cowboy and sharp shooting rifleman who answers an advertisement to go to Western Australia as a hired sharp shooter. If proving his worth, he’s to work for Elliot Marston (Rickman), but when Marston outlines his sick reasons for hiring Quigley, the pair quickly become on a collision course that can only see one of them survive. It was written in the 1970s by John Hill, where it was hoped that Steve McQueen would take on the lead role, but with McQueen falling ill and Clint Eastwood allegedly passed over, the project sat on ice until 1990. In came Selleck and the film finally got made. Just about making back its money at the box office, Wincer’s movie deserved far better than that. It’s competition in the Western stakes in 1990 were Costner’s beautiful and elegiac Dances With Wolves and the Brat Pack bravado of Young Guns II, both vastly different films from each other, and both considerably different from Quigley Down Under. If those two films contributed to the average response to the Selleck picture? I’m not completely sure, but viewing it now one tends to think that the 1990 audience just wasn’t ready for such a delightfully old fashioned Oater, one that features a straight and simple narrative to tell its tale. It’s safe to say that anyone after deep psychological aspects will not get that here. There’s some serious themes in the story, such as the horrid genocide towards Aborigines, while the deft kicks at the British are fair enough even to a British guy such as myself. But in the main this is old time Western fare, ...

Any models from antm/ausntm that you felt lacked potential but ended up impressing you throughout their run?
Hm, good question. I feel like early ANTM had a lot of front runners who surprised me, Mercedes from Cycle 2 was someone I thought looked sweet, but didn’t see a model, but she turned it out. Joanie from Cycle 6 is another one, like Tyra said in casting she doesn’t give much in person, but she knows how to model, and serves an incredible photo. I think Jennifer from Cycle 13 is another, and Anslee from Cycle 14 is someone I always forget, never thought looked like a model, but had some shining moments that showed something I never saw. From some of the newer seasons Shanice from Cycle 24 had a series of shots that shut me up, even though I was doubting her hard pre-season and up to that point. ANTM has a lot to be honest of these, so I’m sure there are more I am just missing.
As for from AusNTM, I think one that jumps out is Adele from Cycle 5. Never really saw model initially, and in the first few weeks she gave mediocre, but at a certain point she just went into high gear, and gave some sensational shots. Really found her niche that just worked. Another obvious one is Kathryn from Cycle 6 too, absolutely nothing special in person, but one of the most photographic models in NTM history. A real contender for my favourite portfolio ever.

Joanie Sprague
In this episode, I chat with Joanie Sprague. You may know her as the runner-up on cycle 6 of America’s Next Top Model, but I first met her almost 10 years when she was working as a carpenter and hosting her own show on the DIY Network.
She’s currently part of the all-star cast of the new Trading Spaces on TLC, and host of her own podcast called The Little Bit. In this episode Joanie shares what…

1. Joanie’s Elephant Shot
Joanie had a lot of stellar photos but this was the crown jewel of her portfolio. Her legs are sensational, which is perfect for the brief, and her pose has such a commanding presence. Her eyes are piercing even in the wide shot and her face is so stunning here. I feel like she really connected with the elephant and also modeled the heck out of the dress. This was a difficult list to put in order, but I knew that I would put this shot of Joanie at the top.

01. Joanie
This first call out was pretty obvious. With such an awkward concept, the pictures remaining really fashionnable automatically stand out, and this is precisely the case of Joanie’s picture. The pose and the face seems completely over the top, but it maintain the energy of the concept while, most of all, putting the garment in its best light. Like that leg raised to the max in the air ? It sells the hell out of those boots, while elongating Joanie pretty efficiently. Joanie really killed that photoshoot and produced such an eye catchy and dynamic picture, so she was rightfully awarded of first call out in panel.

#4 – Joanie Dodds
Danielle Evans remains one of my favourite winners to this day, but when watching the cycle I was totally rooting for Joanie to take the win. I think Joanie just had the amazing dry wit which I love, and in a cycle full of over-the-top comical characters in the likes of Furonda and Jade, this was absolutely essential. She really was a perfect complement to the rest of the cast, and was one of the key reason Cycle 6 has the strongest entertainment factor to date. But of course, her personality isn’t the only thing driving her up this list. Joanie modelled so well throughout her time in the competition, and was constantly one of the models to watch.
Joanie may have had a slightly slower start to the cycle, with her first shot being her weakest, and then two shots that were pretty good, but after that she just began to excel. Quickly becoming the strongest model in the competition. Again she is one of the models who suffered from a weak set of photoshoots, which stops any of her photos from being amongst my favourites from the competition, but even despite this they are still beautiful. Her black and white beauty shot is just so raw, and her future careers shot is just delightful, filled with character. The best of course however is her elephant shot. I am still in awe about how calm she looks in that position, getting on top of an elephant seems hard enough, let alone legs spread, posed daintily, with a perfect face. It really is just mind blowing.
In the end it is clear Joanie will forever be amongst my favourite models, she had a delightful personality and really helped bring sanity to a mad season. Not only that she had a strong portfolio, and while some say Danielle and Jade had stronger more consistent ones, I would much rather have someone who learned, and by the end of the cycle knocked the other two out of the park.
