Underworld Office headcanons!

(UwO exclusive, haven't played CiU yet)

★Sometimes, when the situation calls for it, River and Joan threaten Eugene with Boss like a mother threatening a child that they'll tell their dad after he's back from work.

★After locking Charlie in her cane, Joan can sometimes hear his(or hers or theirs I don't know the game keeps switching the pronounce) quiet, faint screams. She just smirks a little at that.

★Eugene sometimes feeds stray cats.

★Linda likes to tell puns sometimes. They're cheesy, really cheesy. But Eugene can't help but giggle quietly to himself whenever he hears them while walking to or from school. He somehow finds them funny. He didn't tell anyone but Sean managed to catch on. He didn't tell Eugene he knows yet but he really appreciates Eugene finding his mom's jokes amusing.

★Eugene learned where Sean's grave lays and he'd sometimes come visit it with a flower from Linda's flower shop. Sean doesn't know it's Eugene so he thinks it's his mom. Eugene isn't planning on correcting him anytime soon.

★Eugene visits Finley and Tatum a lot. He's still not very talkative but he gladly plays with them and even takes them back to the playground from time to time.

★When there's danger (for example monsters) and Sean is talking with someone, his first instinct is to pick them up and run.

★Hayden pouts. A lot. Even for no reason.

★There's an unspoken rule in the office that there's no swearing allowed in front of Hayden or Eugene. River would sometimes almost slip up but then Boss would whack her. Eugene doesn't usually pick up on River's slip up and gets confused and startled when Boss suddenly whacks her with his fan.

★Eugene wanted to give something to River since she doesn't have anything the way Boss has his fan, ect. He tried to fall asleep while holding something but it didn't work as he planned and his spirit left his body with nothing. He never told her about it even though he tried that a couple of times.

★Hayden is the only one from the office ghosts that can't handle being outside during the day. Of course, it's tiring for all of them but he takes it the worst.

★Boss is very against anyone or himself spying on Eugene's private life but there was a situation. Eugene's been coming to the office with scars on his hands and face and he avoided answering any questions. As much as Boss was against it, he followed Eugene out of concern. Turns out Eugene was just trying to hug stray cats but they'd get mad at him and he was too embarrassed to admit to it.

★One time, Eugene saw a humanoid silhouette in the corner of his eye and thought that someone was following him. He got startled, only to realize that it was actually just his own shadow.

★Boss sometimes stands by a window, his hands behind his back, staring off into the distance as he gets lost in thought.

★River plans crimes for fun.

★Sean never learned how to swim. Just float awkwardly on his back. Even Hayden can swim better and he never swam without his floaties.

Me when I see the concerning amount of content underworld office/Charlie in underworld DOESNT have.

But seriously. There is an extremely underwhelming amount of content for these amazing games. And this is still counting the weird ship content. (Which, why do some people ship boss x eugene? That is a traumatized father son relationship and if you think otherwise I can pay for your therapy with my pocket lint. )

People, what more do you want? We have a scrunkly little angsty person who rarely talks, who's also just really freaking depressed and lonely.

We call em eugene.

Then we have an angsty, angry, swearing little scronk. We have an angry child whos very depressed also and they're funny and angry and also chaotic.

And need I go on? We have a tall man with a fan. (The father figure.) We have a chaotic woman who may or may not be high. We have a grandma 'back in my day' and then we have just a small little child who can talk to cats.

We have a wonderful and varying cast of characters.

And so. *tips fedora that appeared just now for the purpose of fedora tipping* this concludes my rant on why you should play Underworld Office, and it's Sequel, Charlie in Underworld.

Here's some angst.

1. Hayden got sealed(as one of the alternate choices in ciu) thinking that harming mortals was a sin and turning into a monster. Boss was indirectly the reason he turned into a monster and got sealed.

2. The fact that Boss is now alone just like he feared. Everyone else has been sealed or they've moved on.

3. Charlie's dream of working in the office never comes true (the secret ending of ciu)

4. The fact that Eugene admired Boss so much that they started to imitate his behavior and look like him. I'm the beginning of ciu, the way how Eugene says to handle things objectively if Charlie chooses to cut the scarf that strangles the ghost who attacks them before finding Joan. If it was kid Eugene, they would have done the same thing as Charlie.

5. The way how Eugene has never had a father figure who didn't betray him.

She grins pridefully, waving dismissively at his very-accurate description of her affection. Charlie cringed at River's playfulness.

"Bleh, you're disgusting."

"And, they're okay I guess. I don't really care."

"Booo! Boring!"

"Hayden likes Eugene! Eugene even listens to Hayden talking about movies and watch movies with Hayden!"

"I agree with the kid, Eugene is really tolerable and tolerating. A good worker as well. They're a good example how kids nowadays should be."

"But kids these days, risking their lives to work in dangerous environments..."

"Where's Sean— Sean!"

River suddenly yells right in Sean's face, who was relaxing on the seats until the peace had been sliced through by an mischievous (and annoying) figure. He noticably flinched, which no one bother to point out.

"U— Huh?"

"What do you think about Eugene working here?"

"Eugene?"

His shoulders relaxed at the mention of the bright coloured individual, thinking a bit longer than he should.

"Eugene...They help around a lot, and it's admirable."

"You guys are so sappy..." "It's better than being a sad loser!"

The answering was suddenly interrupted as another ghost had audibly phased through the office door, where everyone can see instead of through the wall. And lo behold it was Eugene!!

"Hello everyone, sorry I'm la...."

Eugene trailed off, pausing at how everyone was suddenly staring at them. Well, everyone except Hayden, who just floats up right infront Eugene's face.

"Eugene! Everyone was talking about Eugene!" "Ah...is that so?"

"Yup!" River broke free from her silent pause, "To be honest, you had me a bit worried at how late you were. I never thought I'd see the day you get into work an whole minute later."

"it's just a minute..."

Boss watched everyone erupts back into chatter, not acknowledging how late Eugene is, but instead lets them know their presence is seen by giving a short nod when they glanced at him.

An unstoppable smile crept up on Eugene's face; it's nice to be acknowledged, even with the smallest things.

There's nothin' left for you. Nothin' in this room, try and go outside. Nothin' waits for you.

"Respect your elders, or I'm chopping those fingers off," Joan hisses back with a grin, turning her gun back to a cane.

Charlie frowns, crossing their arms and cursing under their breath. They go and mope in the corner while cutting some paper dolls.

Ok, I knew that Buff Studio already had plans for Charlie in Underworld when making Underworld Office (bc of conext clues), but I didn't know HOW MUCH they knew what they were planing when they made the first game!!!!! Aaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!

(Spoilers for UwO/CiU)

First, in chapter 4, early sleep, right before Eugene gets kicked out, Boss says "I hope I never see you again."

This implies several things, Boss hopes Eugene lives a long life and/or when they die they can immediately go to 'the other side'. This also implies that Boss can't leave. Because of the door that he is in charge of guarding, he can never leave. Of course, at the end of Charlie in Underworld the door gets destroyed so Boss could leave (after a lot of work). However in this game, Boss doesn't know that's going to happen. He is under the assumption that he is going to stay in the office forever.

Furthermore, in the Peace Somewhere Beyond ending, Eugene mentions that Boss might never find peace.

This could also be because he can't leave due to the door. Although it could be argued that Eugene mentions this because Boss will never be bright, I disagree due to the end of Charlie in Underworld. Boss clearly has a desire to right his wrongs and be bright, however he can't because his duty is to protect the door. So, because of what happens in the Peace Somewhere Beyond ending, Charlie in Underworld doesn’t happen in that timeline, and the door is probably never destroyed. Which keeps Boss guarding the door forever. The door is never mentioned in Underworld Office as an obligation for Boss, as that is only revealed at the end of Charlie in Underworld. However there is plenty of evidence that the writers were thinking about this connection while making this game.

In addition, Charlie gets sealed, leading to the beginning of Charlie in Underworld. Obviously, this is a rather basic connection. However, there is more to it. They could have had Charlie escape or get torn into pieces, without Eugene interfering and letting Joan deal with Charlie. This would get rid of Charlie and give Eugene the opportunity to get Joans help and be able to call the cane later on, because Joan wouldn’t be mad at Eugene. But, Charlie was sealed so that the Office ghosts could easily get to them. It also allows and gives a reason for Charlie to lose their memories, so that the player can slowly learn about Charlie throughout the plot. Because Charlie was sealed, we got the beginning of Charlie in Underworld.

Also, I saw a post in the Underworld Office tag (idk how I would find it now) that said “Eugene choose to be a dark ghost” and it came with this image:

When I was first playing through the game, I thought this was just a fun design choice, and it might be. But if Buff Studios was already thinking about the plot of the second game and how ghosts actually work, this may be a nod to that. This could be refuted with the argument that Eugene thought he was doing good and should be a bright ghost, however this brings up several problems. First off, Buff Studios wanted to keep the conflict of how ghosts work for the second game, and also Eugene did think what he was doing was wrong. They justified it in their head because Jack was a murderer, but I guarantee that Eugene still thought that murder was bad. In fact, Eugene wanted to stop Jack in part because he was a murderer. So it would make sense for Eugene to be a dark ghost, along with the fact that Susans desire for vengeance was still in the area too.

Next, we have the fact that Boss didn’t explain how ghosts work in the beginning of the game. It was River who explained to Eugene how things work. While giving this explanation, Boss stayed silent. This could hint that Boss already knew how ghosts actually work and was staying silent in the beginning of the game. Although this can be refuted with the fact that in the second to last chapter in Charlie in Underworld, Eugene states that Boss has been getting darker because of his guilt of keeping this secret. Which means that Eugene had to have already seen Boss before to tell that he was getting darker. But since Boss got attached to Eugene, he may have felt more guilty about keeping everything a secret. Thus, making him darker when Eugene was around. Although this is an interesting theory, I disagree with it. I think Boss figured out how things actually worked either in between the two games, or the beginning of Charlie in Underworld when Charlie is unsealed. Despite this however, Boss most likely still had an idea that ghosts did not work the way he thought. I believe the fact that River explained everything rather than Boss was very intentional, and an important fact when thinking about Charlie in Underworld.

Finally, all the ghosts have images of when they were alive. At the end of every chapter, there is an image that goes along with it. (Like this one)

I believe this image changes depending on what choices are made. Some of these images show the ghosts when they were alive. Like Hayden playing with a cat, or Joan with her gun and in her soldier outfit. Through these images, it is clear that Buff Studios already planned out the ghosts' backstories. They already had their backstories planned, but they did not say anything about them. This is because they go into the ghosts' pasts in Charlie in Underworld. Further proving that they had already planned what they were going to do in the second game, and were planning on making a second game.

In conclusion, these were all the things that I found in the first game. All of these little details show how Buff Studios was already thinking about Charlie in Underworld when making the first game. They put so much thought into these games, how they would work, the worldbuilding, and the characters. Because of their care and passion for these games, it makes their world feel so real.
