I see a woman unwilling to see herself or take accountability for her own recklessness. Who seeks out her own self-destruction so she can preempt whatever pain she sees coming her way. Who will run straight into danger, just to avoid fucking feeling something.

This month was all about contemporary romances for me. I got some excellent ARCs like Tastes Like Shakkar by Nisha Sharma (which pleasantly surprised me; review forthcoming) and Tessa Bailey's Unfortunately Yours (here's my review). I read a rather entertaining novella called Hard Wood that put me in my lumberjack era for a hot second. There was another book that tried to sell me on a hero named "Martin" (tbh his cardinal sin was eating mangos off her vaj, which is only topped off in terribleness by eating tiramisu off someone's vagina— Enzo you monster, cages are not where I draw the line, but the tiramisu is). Also read Dana Islay's Rules We Break which had me pondering why it's so hard to find dommes in romance novels (and rarer still to find well-written ones). All in all, a good month, and here are my favorites:
Looking by Katrina Jackson
This was recommended to me by @monarchies-history after I was asked for a list of diverse contemporary romance recs. Darren and Nadia are a married couple with twins. They want to open their marriage and arrange to meet with Jourdan (sidenote: all the mcs are Black; Katrina really does the most for diverse romances), who is very into both of them right off the bat, and the feeling is mutual (there is a park trail sex scene lolol). What I loved most about Looking is that it's such a joyful book. The dialogue is funny and clever, the sex is very hot in all its configurations (Darren and Nadia get to know Jourdan separately before they all get together— it's actually kinda "slowburn" in that sense; each of them gets their own POV section), and the three of them are just so happy to be together, you can't help but smile.
Serving Pleasure by Alisha Rai
@jeanvanjer was trying to get me to read Glutton for Pleasure for the longest time (which I did, and it was good; another throuple book), but I latched onto Serving Pleasure more, not only because I enjoyed the way the sex was written more, but also because the emotions REALLY got to me. It's also a pretty unhinged premise: The hero Micah is a recluse and an artist, and Rana lives across the street from him and like... constantly watches him, and even follows (stalks?) him at some point. Lucky for her he's very into it, even jerking off purposely at his window (out of spite, but then he stops midway out of guilt lolol). He asks her to pose for him and they began a no strings-attached fling.
Also, I really liked Rana's characterization: she's perceived as a "party girl" with no serious ambition compared to her sisters so she has to grapple with her self-perception vs. what outsides see, which was really quite novel for me to read in a South Asian heroine.
Compromised in Paradise by Samanthe Beck
This book is fun, light, and quite literally a beach read since it's set in a resort in Hawaii. Arden is a stressed-out heiress looking for a fling, but when the hero Nick catches her faking her orgasm, he decides to give her orgasm lessons. Like, what a saint amirite? With a premise like this, it can go a lot of ways but I appreciate Nick's dedication to centering their sex lessons around her and her orgasm, and then it took an unexpected but welcomed turn towards the end with the rare contemporary romance anal sex.
This book also made me read like three of Samanthe's other books on one shot, and they're all full of great banter and solid dirty talk. Would absolutely recommend this book, this series (called "Compromise Me" which should totally be the name of an HR series), and this author overall.
Salt in the Wound by Sierra Simone
Sierra Simone is back at it, y'all. Salt in the Wound is the (free!) prequel to Salt Kiss, which is coming out this fall. It's set in the same universe as the New Camelot series and Sierra's criminally underrated Sherwood (ft. female!Robin Hood/Maid Marian/Sheriff of Nottingham with a side of a hushed mention of bogeyman Mark Trevena). It centers around how Isolde gets engaged to Mark Trevena, former assassin, current BDSM club owner, and Man Who Never Stops Telling You He's A Bad Bad Man. Isolde wants to be a nun (she also learns martial arts at a nun dojo), but is put in a position where she needs to learn how to fake being Mark's sub in public. Cue kink lessons, and as it turns out she's very into it, and Mark is SHOOK (the way he flees at the end because he can't handle Feelings and masks it with a show of "I'm sooooo Bad you should have expected me to be a bitch about this"..... bravo. Couldn't have set up Salt Kiss better).
My favorite thing about Sierra's characters is just the level of zeal they have... for religion, for sex, for power, and this short story is no different. I am eagerly awaiting the Lyonesse Trilogy.
You Can Follow Me by Jo Brenner
This book was shilled in both Sierra Simone and Mila Finelli's newsletters in a span of a week so I knew I had to give it a shot. Another wild premise: Kara hooked up separately with three SEALs who were actually lovers (two of the three did *not* happen upon her by accident...) and now Circumstances lead to them kidnapping her and holding her captive. Listen, I fully admit I came here for the sex (fun sex, angry sex, manipulative sex, spite-because-she-won't-sleep-with-you-so-you-fuck-your-bros-in-front-of-her sex... you get the picture) but I stayed for the *journey* ok. Specifically how Kara deals with this insane loss of freedom even as she wants to jump all of their bones, and starts to catch Feelings.
Scorching to the Touch by Ofelia Martinez
Another excellent recommendation by Sierra Simone, this one is a somewhat toxic (until it isn't!) romance between a telenovela star (and she's plus sized) and a rockstar. Listen, sometimes all you want to do is read a romance with two hot people who know they're hot shit and also deeply messy individuals. Revenge oral 4% of the way into the book? Check. Stalking Tracking each other long after they've broken up? Check. Breaking up each other's engagements? Check. Him crying on his knees because he bruised her during sex even if it's probably him overreacting? Check. Obsession-induced erectile dysfunction? Check. It's fabulous. Would recommend.
Forbidden Harmony by Elizabeth Kelly
I feel like this post sums up the plot of this one excellently; In addition, I know Elizabeth is writing a series with exclusively older couples which I might try soon.

EXCUSE ME? They just annouced the cast of Stranger Things: The First Shadow!
Oscar Lloyd is James Hopper Jr. Isabella Pappas is Joyce Maldonado, Chris Buckley is Bob Newby
Louis McCartney is Henry Creel and Patrick Vaill is Dr Brenner (I have so many thoughts about this)
Ella Karuna Williams is Patty Newby. So she's really Bob's sister! Yes. Look at them. I'm sure she and Henry will have a very interesting dynamic. Can't wait to see them.
And here Henry's parents: Michael Jibson is Victor Creel, and Lauren Ward is Virginia. I wonder if we're also going to see Alice... and Lonnie, and Scott Clarke
I am ready!
EDIT: Yes, we're gonna see Karen, Lonnie, well, a lot of people, lol. Thank you Jo for the screenshot

“Just don’t regret choosing me, okay?” she asked, and the vulnerability in it made him hate himself. A better man would tell her the truth. A better man wouldn’t take advantage. She needed a better man. She needed a keeper. He wasn’t a better man, but he still wanted to be the one to keep her.

Møter du meg i flammene? Eller løper du, og tar med deg kassen ved inngangspartiet da du drar?
Får jeg kjent deg for andre gang på nytt, på ordentlig, på dypet? Gjør jeg det allerede?

“Dark Romance” is Ruining The Book Lovers Community -- Essay by Amelia R.
“Dark Romance” is Ruining The Book Lovers Community.
The “dark romance” genre of books is made up of books that explore the darker sides of relationships; the darker sides being abuse, rape, kindnapping, trauma, incest, pedophilia, and male leads that are genuinely horrible people and abuse the female lead in a way that should never be allowed, let alone glamorized as it is. These books aren’t a protagonist working through trauma with a partner who’s a little morally gray but actually loves and cares about them, they’re torture and rape disguised as “romance”. A common theme in these books is that the male lead forces the female lead into a sexually exploitative relationship, often treating her cruelly and publicly humiliating her to push down and suppress the feelings of “love” towards her. While it is true that there are no perfect males out there and everyone has flaws, these books don’t send the message “be careful because not everyone is what they appear to be”. This genre of books actually encourages sexual exploitation, accepting public humiliation from a partner, accepting abuse from a partner, and fantasizing about rape. These books not only send the wrong message to the adults reading this, but to young readers that managed to get their hands on it because it sounded interesting. The truth is that age restrictions don’t work. If a fourteen year old really wants to read a certain book, they will find a way. So now, we have adults that already have aberrant sexual desires, and impressionable children that are reading this and thinking “oh! It has a happily ever after and it says romance, so this is a love story! This is how love is!” Dark romance books are influencing readers to be more accepting of rape and abuse.
These books are not only harmful to readers but to rape and sexual assault survivors. It’s already incredibly hard for a rapist to be convicted of rape and then given an appropriate sentence. Now with an entire genre that glamorizes rape, sexual assault, and sexual exploitation, teens are posting online how much they’d love to be raped and/or kidnapped. How much harder would it be to convince a jury that yes, you were raped, and you didn’t want it, when there are so many books glamorizing rape and sexual exploitation and making it seem like the female lead (who is almost always the one being raped, abused, and/or exploited) learns to like it? The answer is much harder.
The book Brutal Game by Jo Brenner, is a “dark romance” book. It glorifies public humiliation, rape threats, and sexually exploitative relationships. On page 93, the male lead, Jack Feldman, says, “I raised my voice, making sure everyone could hear me. ‘Sorry, Tovah, I’m taking my cumdumpster home for the night. She has a more important job to do.’” The “important job” obviously is having non-consensual sex with him. By this point in the book, Jack Feldman has already forced the female lead, Aviva, into a sexually exploitative relationship. Why did he force her into a relationship? He was obsessed with her. How was he able to force her into a sexually exploitative relationship? Aviva’s brother was sexually assaulted by Jack Feldman’s hockey coach. Aviva’s brother quit the hockey team and even dropped out of school because of this. And Aviva was out for revenge. She went to find evidence of the sexual assault. But Jack caught her. And Jack is friends with the coach (and the captain of the hockey team). So he forces her into a sexually exploitative relationship. It’s already not consensual. He then steals her virginity. And in the same page as the first quote he says this: “Aviva, get the fuck in the car or so help me god, I will strip you naked on College Ave and make you suck me off in front of every goddamned person who walks by, and if they have a penis, I’ll make you suck them off, too. Those are your only options.” So the options that she has are to either be raped at his place, or be raped in the street by him and any man that just decides to join in. She got in the car.
In later chapters, chapters 16 and 17, Jack drugged her with Vixen, a pill that increases female libido and sexual desire. The use of the drug was also implied to be something almost common among the hockey players of the book; “the comedown from Vixen could be fairly drastic. Although Mason Calloway, my counterpoint from our rival school, had drugged his girlfriend with it, and she’d gone to sleep after.” He drugged her because she had said “there’s nothing you do that’s loveable, and there’s nothing about you that’s loveable, Jack Feldman. I wish I’d never met you, and I can’t wait for the day you’re finally out of my life for good.” He then raped her in front of his entire hockey team, only thinking he had maybe gone too far when everyone (including him) discovered she had a huge scar. This is also the chapter where he comes to terms with the fact that he has feelings for her, which he discovers when some of the other hockey players touch her while he’s raping her. Obviously, his feelings are not love. Because when you love somebody, you don’t rape them. When you love somebody, you don’t try to break them. But he thinks it’s love. The book supposedly has a “happily ever after” with Jack and Aviva somehow ending up happily together. He gets a girlfriend and no consequences for abusing, violating, publicly humiliating and raping Aviva. And Aviva gets a rapist for a boyfriend. And lifelong trauma. And in the epilogue, the whole cycle starts again with Jack’s friend/teammate, Issac, and another friend of theirs, Tovah Kaufman.
Brutal Game is just one book out of hundreds of thousands of books. So not only is this one book that glamorizes rape, loss of virginity to a rapist, emotional and sexual abuse, public humiliation, blackmail, sexual exploitation, and the victimization of women, extremely popular and horrible – it’s being read by girls. Not women. Young, impressionable girls who will read this and think “oh, so even if my boyfriend drugs and rapes me, we can still be happy togther” or “oh, even if this boy who’s blackmailing me, lets his friends watch as he rapes me, he likes me” or “even though he threatened me with gang rape, we can still be happy together”. There are thousands of books out there that glamorize pedophilia, incest, rape, loss of virginity to a rapist, emotional and sexual abuse, public humiliation, blackmail, sexual exploitation, kidnapping/abduction, Stockholm syndrome, and the victimization of women. Everyone has their own tastes and opinions and they’re entitled to them. But the fact that publishers have created a safe space for people who get off on reading about horrible things being done to women and call it a book genre is morally wrong. It is morally wrong to romanticize rape, or pedophilia, or incest, or kidnapping. As readers, we have a responsibility to regulate what becomes popular. By buying books like these, we send the message that “yes, we will buy this. Make more books like this.”
It is not romance when all that happens is a young woman is groomed, humiliated, raped, kidnapped, enslaved, and/or abused. A dark romance is when one of or both love interests would kill or have killed for each other. A dark romance is two partners/love interests that commit violent crimes, not against each other, but against the people trying to harm their lover. A dark romance is not a man forcing a young woman into a relationship and being abusive. A dark romance would be a man in a relationship with a young woman, and the relationship is not based on lust. The man may do some bad things but the point is that he does them for the one he loves and not to the one he “loves”.
Banning books is not the solution. No one responds well to freedoms being taken away – regardless of what freedoms they actually were. However, books about sexuality with no romanticizing sexual violence/abuse are being banned while “dark romance” books are not. That goes to show the hatred and internalized misogyny that women have for themselves. Many women are reading and writing these books because they’ve internalized that “it’s okay because it’s fiction”.
The problem with the “dark romance” genre is the same as the problem with the porn industry. Men have little to no compassion for women and don’t stop to think about who will have access to these books, just like how they rush to defend their pornography that recreates rape. They say that the woman is “just a good actress” when she’s screaming and crying on camera, but when it's softer pornography they complain that they’re bad actors. Women have internalized this preference for violent and often non-consensual sex in the media they produce and consume, leading to an entire genre that just romanticizes rape and the abuse of mostly women.
“Dark romance” is not only ruining the book lovers community, but also infecting the minds of young, impressionable girls, who will grow up and find themselves trapped in abusive relationships because they dismissed the red flags, seeing that they were in line with what they’ve read. Reading books isn’t just “for fun”. You learn from books: the kind of person you like, how you should act, what other people are going through. Books are teachers, and if we allow “dark romance” to be taught, what kind of life will our sisters lead? What kind of life will our daughters lead? Will our daughters and granddaughters be able to catch the red flags and realize they’re in danger with a certain man? What lesson are these books teaching the vulnerable girls that are eager to learn? And, can we fix it in time to save them from the pain that is certainly down the path of the lessons of “dark romance” books?

We’re talking about firefighters this week — arguably the best of the hero(in)es in uniform because, let’s face it, there’s something pretty sexy about someone who will run into flames to save a stranger…let alone to save you. We’re talking about primordial firefighters, about patriarchy (obviously), about the difference between city firefighters and smoke jumpers, and about about the nature of a love interest who puts themself in danger for a living. All that, and they can dead lift you, too.
(That's a Jill Shalvis cover, btw)
Thanks to Jo Brenner and 1001 Dark Nights for sponsoring this week's episode.

Several years later, the Soviets send the spacecraft Leonov & crew to Jupiter along with three Americans, including Floyd, to help investigate Discovery and the malfunction of the vessel’s sentient computer, HAL 9000. Keir Dullea returns as the missing astronaut David Bowman while Helen Mirren plays the captain of the Leonov. Bob Balaban and John Lithgow also appear as the other two American astronauts. “2010: The Year We Make Contact” (1984) is realistic science-fiction that’s less artsy and more dramatically compelling compared to its predecessor, “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968). That doesn’t make it better, of course, just different. “2001” raised questions while this one provides answers, which some people inevitably won’t like. The questions include: Why did HAL malfunction? What was the real reason for Discovery’s original mission, unknown to Floyd? What happened to Bowman? What is the purpose of the colossal monolith orbiting Jupiter? Both films compliment and counterbalance each other. This one’s more of a straightforward space adventure in the near future. Unlike Star Wars, which is space fantasy, “2010” is space-oriented adult science-fiction. Star Trek is too, but “2010” is far more realistic, which I appreciate. In other words, don’t expect any Klingons or spacecraft dogfights. This is more along the lines of “Mission to Mars” (2000) and “The Martian” (2015). The film runs 1 hours, 56 minutes. GRADE: B r96sk: A much more standard affair compared to its predecessor. Given that’s the case, I honestly enjoyed this more than ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ – if only because it’s more closer to what I’d personally want from a film than what that 1968 ...
