Okay so. Near the end of Swing For The Fences after Gwyn’s funeral they go back to Owen’s and have grief sex…IN MY HEAD, before I had even started really writing I had imagined them going to a hotel nearby and having sex there because I thought that was better for some reason….I think I wanted the urgency of it and the privacy but it felt a little weird and I floated it by @typicaltk and @strandnreyes and they were “they would go back to Owen’s because they’re staying there and Owen is still at the reception so they’d have privacy, why would they ever go back to a hotel???” Which of course is the correct answer but it was the biggest STRUGGLE of my writing career to have at 10:19 at night.

And then we did it again—same time at night—in Begged And Borrowed Time, trying to figure out what would happen to Jo after she hit her bully.

Interesting, intriguing, introduction to a new series that will showcase paranormal gifts in the main characters of historical romances. Great start to a new series!

What I liked:

* The introduction in which Rhys and Gwyn Tremayne find two small, gifted children – Caden and Branock – and take them home

* Bran: abandoned at three, escaped with Caden and made it to London, taken in and raised by the Tremaynes, works for The British Home Office, problem solver, researcher, knows people and can see threads – knows he needs to go to Cornwall and not because he is last in line to inherit a barony

* Girl: a mind-wiped woman, kidnapped, gifted, to be used against her will for something big – liked finding out who she really was and how her life would play out

* The closeness that Caden and Bran have both as tiny boys and later as men

* The idea of “gifts” and how they are explained in the story

* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing

* The way the gifted characters felt and followed their intuition

* The relationship between Bran and Merryn and how gifted often find the perfect mate

* Getting to know Tamsyn, Matthew Davey, Glynis, Annie, Alice, and wondering about Cade’s younger half-sister and if she will show up later in this series will be

* That I liked and cared about the characters and felt I would like to have them as friends

* Knowing that there is another book in this series to look forward to

* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:

* Who and what I was meant not to like

* Thinking about war, spies, treasonous acts, and the evil men and women will do for money

My muses and fireworks:

Yes. This is me listing all of them. Because I can. 

Amy: I think that this depends. Her senses are more alert than that of a human, and thus her hearing is more sensitive. But i think this is most true when it comes to being in fox form. And thus she avoids that form. And for the most part will get ear plugs and curl up under a blanket with her son.

Aurelia: Aurelia doesn’t mind occasionally watching the fireworks. But she is more concerned about the safety of her owls and neighboring creatures. She’s managed to create a sound barrier around her property that draws animals as a protective barrier against the fireworks. 

Bela: Bela is not bothered by fireworks. She doesn’t particularly care about them. But they can come in handy to make a quick escape so she’s not against them either.

Blaise: He doesn’t mind the fireworks. He’s been to enough parties where they are set off. They don’t bother him. He can get rather bored by them in fact. 

Briar Rose: I don’t think she has much experience with them at all. And thus would be rather startled in her main universe. But when she does experience them, I think they don’t bother her much. She would however find them pretty, and love when she saw new patterns.

Casey: 100% has a negative reaction initially. Either she flinches, or draws her gun, depending on the circumstance. Once she’s aware of them, she’ll watch them. But they sound enough like a gun shot, that she is ready at a moment’s notice. 

Claire: After the war, especially working in the field hospital, Claire does not care for fireworks at all. She flinches at the sound of them. And she is glad to live in a time when she doesn’t have to deal with them as much as modern times. Though she certainly gets enough similar sounds.

Elain: Elain I think would have been startled and scared as a child. But would have thought of them as beautiful when she saw them. I think she would have grown to be fond of them and their color.

Faith: I think she’d be used to them. Between canon fire and musket fire, the loud noise would be common enough. She’d probably think they were pretty enough.

Gwyn: I think Gwyn has a quiet appreciation for fireworks. I think she finds a quiet spot to herself to watch them while curled under a blanket.

Harry: Fireworks are nothing to Harry. He is fireworks. Literally he makes his own daily. I think they might have bothered him at one point in time after some of the things he’s dealt with. But he learned to ignore it altogether.

Hazel: She didn’t care a lot about them. But she did love the Weasley Twins’ fireworks escape and thought that was amazing. She probably would have further enjoyed their fireworks and such if not for the final battle at Hogwarts.

Hermione: Hermione too ends up not being one for fireworks after the battle. They’re loud. She’ll still watch them, feeling nostalgic. But she uses charmed ear plugs most of the time to block out the sound.

Jamie: Not a fan. Sure explosives are cool and all. But they’re loud, and he’s dealt with enough gun fire and canonfire that he just doesn’t care for them.

Jo: I think Jo has fond memories of seeing fireworks with her parents, her dad holding her up on his shoulders. And I think she sees fireworks and that’s what she remembers. 

Luna: Loud sounds are not one of the things that plagues Luna after the battles. So she still enjoys fireworks. She always found their colors to be pretty, and she has fond memories of her parents watching them in other corners of the world. 

Lysandra: Lysandra views fireworks as luxury and party items. She’s used to them, can even block them out. And she thinks they’re pretty, but rather boring. They lost their appeal a long time ago.

Natasha: Nat was exposed to the sound until she was immune to the effects as part of her training. Weakness was not tolerated. So any that could be trained out were. And she was often exposed to the loud sounds.

Queenie: Queenie thinks that fireworks are pretty. And she gets excited any time there’s an event. She has cocoa ready for the new years ones and always has snacks. She’ll drag Tina with and she gets excited. 

Severus: Severus doesn’t care about fireworks. He thinks they’re loud. They’re annoying. And though the sound no longer bothers him, there was a time they reminded him strongly of his father. He’d rather stay indoors and avoid them altogether.
