doodle of a scene from chapter 17 of On the Run from Tomorrow, my missing scene fic that i wrote to process JNR post v3 grief. i avoided a final edit pass for this chapter for a week because it's so utterly gut wrenching, but it's cathartic and lovingly written, i swear.

Telling apart your Black Canaries:
Dinah as a character has a complicated publication history. It's probably fair to say she's less tangled than some other characters but:
Dinah Drake, later Dinah Drake Lance was a JSA character. She's a street fighter who married Larry Lance, a detective who used to work for the GCPD, and retired/died when her daughter was in her teens. Dinah Snr does not have an active metagene (no Canary Cry). You can generally distinguish her from her daughter by the fact she is basically always depicted wearing a mask and she's got the turned over top black pirate boots. Dinah Snr is always wearing a blonde wig. She has primarily only appeared in Golden and Silver Age stories (officially any Black Canary appearance between 1947-1969 is Dinah Snr) but occasionally pops up in flashback situations since COIE.
Dinah Laurel Lance is the daughter of Dinah and Larry and one of the nieces of the collective JSA elders. She is an extremely talented martial artist who supplements her skill with the Canary Cry, which is due to a metagene she was born with. Her on and off again long term romance is with Oliver Queen (and homoerotically with Barbara Gordon). You can tell Dinah apart from her mother by the fact she’s had dozens of different costumes, but the main distinguishing factors when she’s in the leotard and fishnets are: Dinah Jnr doesn’t wear a mask, and while she does wear the pirate boots up to the early 90s, they’re generally closer fitting and less floppy. Modern art of her is far more likely to use the gold buckle boots instead with the classic outfit. Dinah Jnr also started dyeing her hair blonde rather than wearing a wig in the mid 90s and that continues to the present day.
They used to be the same person, and WERE considered the same person up until the early 1980s, when a retcon was put in place to separate the two by the period when Dinah acquired the Canary Cry. Retrospectively Dinah Snr actually died back in 1969 and her memories were transferred to Dinah Jnr, leading to the confusion; Dinah Jnr actually believed she was her mother for about a decade and a half. (The retcon is complicated and the details aren't really necessary to understand this).
Dinah Snr and Dinah Jnr continued to be separate characters right up until the New 52, where as part of the process of ‘simplifying’ the stories for the relaunch, they decided that the legacy was unnecessary, given all JSA characters were being dropped as part of the timeline shortening to 5 years, and remerged the characters into one. Dinah therefore became Dinah Drake Lance, with an ex-husband Kurt Lance, but functionally was the younger version of the character with a few traits from her mother and a new backstory. Once they started writing the title in n52, the team rapidly worked out that Dinah’s struggle against the legacy of her mother was actually an important plot to them, so invented a NEW Dinah Drake to be Dinah’s mother, who is significantly different to Dinah Drake Snr in a number of points (for one thing, new Dinah Drake Snr walked out on Dinah Jnr when she was a kid for mysterious reasons, leading to Dinah Jnr becoming a street kid who got adopted by a random martial artist named Desmond Lamar and living in his dojo).
This mostly got sorted back out in the transition to Rebirth in the final issue of Black Canary 2015, altering things back to the post-Crisis relationship division between Dinah Snr and Jnr, though unfortunately the backstory retcon about streetkid Dinah and Kurt’s existence hung around like a bad smell for a bunch more years. It’s essentially been ignored by every title since 2020 or so.
(So, they’re sort of three separate people, only two of which have ever existed at any one point in time, and in some periods they were only one character)
All of that is part of the reason that Dinah and Ollie’s relationship is complicated and comes with a lot of baggage: because Ollie and Dinah started dating way back when it was OLLIE dating a slightly older woman in Dinah Snr. Then they retconned in Dinah Jnr’s existence, leaving Ollie dating Dinah Jnr, who is substantially younger than he is. Now, the numbers on this have always been very murky, but it’s probably fair to say: if we take Ollie as presently being in his early 40s, and Roy as being about 30…Dinah’s on best guess about 35. Due to various retcons, they first started dating when Dinah was in her VERY early 20s.
Yes, this has been exploited for drama over the years. I think it’s fair to call Dinah/Ollie a ‘rocky’ relationship; they are very on again-off again, where when they’re on they’re all over each other and having so much sex (seriously I think they have more explicit ‘and then they had sex’ moments than any other couple in DC), but when it gets bad, they are at each other’s throats, behaving terribly, and genuinely hurting each other. Their breakups are no joke; there’s generally a massive issue that means they can’t stand being around each other for a while.
When they’re off again, Dinah can usually be found living on top of Barbara where they both are deniably flirting at each other. The issue of Birds of Prey right before the Dinah/Ollie wedding literally reads like Babs saying through gritted teeth “if he makes you happy, of course I’ll be there for you (and I’ll be waiting to pick up the pieces when he inevitably breaks your heart again)”.
The big age gap also means that Dinah’s often been positioned as having a big sister-like relationship to Roy in particular, and her relationship with Lian is frequently depicted as aunt-niece, rather than the grandmother-granddaughter it technically is.

Reason Why Rosegarden is Canon: #006
In V6E9, Oscar returns after disappearing in the previous episode. When reuniting with the group, he has donned a new outfit and talks about his resolve towards their fight against Salem that directly mirrors the talk he had with Ruby in The Dojo Scene in V5E5.
Tumblr media
The outfit he has chosen lends many more colours to his initial design and mimics the look of his Little Prince allusion. But what's important about this upgrade is the colours and placements he has chosen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's thrown on red shoes which are emblematic of his commitment to "keep moving forward". In other words, to follow the path Ruby is walking. Beyond just the boots, he has also put a red mantle on his shoulders in the same shape as Ruby's hood which is symbolic of his commitment to help her shoulder her burdens.
💡 Important to note that Ruby's following Atlas outfit upgrade, starts to mimic Oscar's shape language as well. And, while team JNR are all designed by Erin Winn, Oscar's design has always been done by Ein Lee, who is responsible for all of team RWBY's outfits as well, adding more evidence to these design similarities being intentional from the beginning.
Also important to note, that when Nora asks Oscar "What are you wearing?" she is literally pointing to Ruby signaling to the audience where he got the inspiration from.
Tumblr media
Beyond this, we have confirmation from Eddy Rivas, one of the show's writers, that wearing the colours of your partner is a common sign of affection or expression of the bond a person shares with someone else.
Tumblr media
We've seen this same pattern in other canon couples throughout the show as well. Most notably with:
Renora, who have always shared pink elements
Arkos, with Jaune wearing a red sash in honour of Pyrrha and
Bumbleby incorporating each other's colours into their weapons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bumbleby has also been designed with that complementary colour scheme in mind since the very beginning with their Yellow/Purple duality. And this same design intention is clear in Rosegarden as well. Not only with the Red/Green, but also their Silver/Gold contrast as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it goes beyond just the colours in their costumes, it is also included in their very names by the colour naming rule.
Ruby (as in Red like the Gemstone) Rose (yes like the flower, but also as in Rise like the Silver Moon)
Oscar (as in Gold like the Award Statues) Pine (as in Green like the Coniferous Tree)

Nitpick for Day #16
The missed opportunity of not having the girls shed some of the layers to their ugly (except for Ruby's) V7-8 looks is so so sad and disappointing!
All of them have at least some layers that they could've shed!
Tumblr media
Weiss could've lost the heavy blue puff sleeve jacket thing, the gloves, even the gray overcoat thing, leaving her outfit consisting of the white underdress with the belts. or even if she'd kept the gray-ish blue overcoat thing it would've looked better (and more white, which is her color) because the heavy blue sleeves would be gone.
Tumblr media
Nothing could save how ugly I think that Yang's V7-9 UPS mail delivery jump suit is, but she could've lost the ugly jacket and took off the zipper pants. It wouldn't save the look, but if they weren't planning to have her shed the layers of her outfit tell me why it looks like this in the first place. She's even got a white top on under the over alls, meaning she could've unzipped the overall portion on top and let it hang down like undone suspenders or something.
Tumblr media
Blake could've shed this ridiculous skintight jacket that doesn't even fit her, and stuck with the still ridiculous skin-tight catsuit.
Tumblr media
Ruby's outfit is the best looking among the V7 transformations (including JNR and Qrow,) but even her outfit has a layer she can shed in the form of the gray undershirt she's wearing. Possibly even the black corset top since she has that dark gray tank under it (I know the corset look is iconic to Ruby but A. everybody's always complaining about wanting simpler looks, and B. Ruby shedding a design element that's iconic to her in V9 would actually be good symbolically.)
Not saying that this is what they had to go with, but best case scenario, the characters would look better and it'd be a breath of fresh air that inspires the fandom to geek out about how smart the designs were for being transformable and tons of people would make fanart blah blah blah. Worst case scenario, the outfits don't go over well and you change them out in V10 since the girls are due for an outfit change anyway (though I'll be honest at this point I'm not really expecting it.)
I talked about wanting this to happen since V8 ended, and I was endlessly disappointed when V9 didn't include any scaling down of the V7-8 looks and I had to look at them in all their bad glory for an entire season more.

Adding on to the Undertale I guess-
Um, Grown up AU! Don't ask why they're all similar ages, they just are. In the Au, da kids did too many resets, glitched the timeline and somehow pressed the reset button all at the same time. Somehow, all of them became corporeal and most of the characters have been age-swapped! (As in the kids are adults and the adults are now kids) They now have to adapt to the new environment but don't worry, they're adjusting well...mostly
Chara is NOT the captain of the royal guard in this AU. (I'll let you guess who it is) but they ARE Asriel's right hand and know very well how to fight.
Frisk is the diplomat between humans and monsters (I think the barrier gets broken at one point in the au idk) but don't underestimate them cause, while they prefer to use words, they still know how to kick ass.
Blow the trumpets and make way for the king of monsters...KING ASRIEL DREEMURR!!! (If you couldn't already tell, he's kinda my favourite-) Mans has his cool glowing swords and fireballs but sadly does not have his lightning, comets or giant blaster skull thingy. Mah furry boi can still smash your face in though. Btw, on his shirt in the middle pic, it says: 'King Fluffybuns Jnr.' that you bet Frisk & Chara got for him.
For Frisk, I'd figured they'd be more adventurous with their style (they can absolutely rock feminine and masculine) with some more sporty wear but main style is still comfy. I wish I could've made their work wear more detailed, but I still couldn't think of much. I headcannon that they like to buy a bunch of pins and patches to just stick on their clothes. They get the others some pins and badges to but they're not that into it. They still wear some badges though.
In the game its kinda a trend that kids wear striped sweaters and I gave the stripes to Frisk since I think they're the most childlike in this au. Nothing derugatory, just more excitable, cheerful and playful.
As you'll probably have noticed, I gave Chara an Undercut and long hair. I just wanted to give them a different look to Frisk and I really like the beanie but again, they look almost too much like Aimsey. There's nothing wrong with that but looking back, I feel like the two have similar asthetics and the beanie made them look way too similar. I gave them combat boots cause that's cool and a different pattern on their sweater? Overalls? Overshirt? Idk.
I didn't really do much with Azzy other than give make him taller, give him a silghtly yellow beard, made his horns much bigger and gave him a different pattern on his sweater. I imagine him taking care of the flowers now and gave him a less armour heavy king outfit that his dad cause I'd assume he'd be less likely to go to war on the humans.
Chara and Azzy kept the same colour palette cause I think it might take them even longer to adjust. I mean, these two were dead for centuries, one was an apathetic flower who committed mass genocide and the other was basically forced to commit mass genocide. I'm not pinning the blame on anyone but I think these two in particular still have a lot of trauma to overcome.
But they still have each other don't worry.
Umm, in terms of my style, I tried thicker lineart in some areas. It's most prominent in Azzy's design I think so let me know what you guys think.
Will I be drawing the rest of the main cast? Idk, probably not but who knows?
Idk what to name the au, maybe you guys can leave an idea?
Until next time my lovely marshiemallows!

So, the end of RWBY x JL shows a scene where Team RWBY and Team JNR wake in a simulation room somewhere in Atlas, presumably all before the shit hits the fan and becomes V8.
It made me wonder, "again? They based it somewhere in V7 again?"
This is the second instance that the show had a spinoff or a thin extension of a new story come from V7. You'd think they'd choose somewhere that isn't in Atlas, y'know, because they're supposed to hate everything about Atlas, Ironwood, and the military and their highly advanced tech. The first time the writing went back to V7 was in Arrowfell, when Ironwood did nothing but act as quest giver.
Now granted, they may villainize Ironwood in the second part because Ruby deduced that someone from their world created the simulation. Or they may blame Watts, which would make more sense for him, but y'know, they may as well break canon for the movies.
Though I just wanted to point out that it is set in V7 again, and I kept wondering why they're choosing to put the kids back in the place that everybody is supposed to hate?
But then I came to think, "was V7 better than I thought?"
V7 is a vibe, in the beginning half. A very good vibe that brought everybody back together. It was the peak of peace of mind for all the characters to train and upgrade into new outfits and get some new upgrades for their weapons. Meet new friends and have Penny and Ironwood back, both of who were a delight to see. Not to mention, they're now surrounded by a great deal of cool Atlesian tech that gives them that futuristic vibe and much more exploration for the teams to do.
I think I can understand why it's neat to have that vibe. It's probably the only volume that had a sense of hopepunk in the cartoon itself. You'd have to ignore Yang and Blake's ignorant decision to trust Robyn to get a good feeling out of this volume. Weiss playing detective to expose her dad, while not the best sideplot, still was something good for her to do and finally put Jacques away. You'd have to also ignore Ruby lying to Ironwood just to have this good vibe.
Oh, and also, couldn't help but notice how hard RT keeps marketing RWBY in their Atlas outfits, as though they were trying to push the V1-V3 outfits away. Eventually, that didn't work. (Maybe that's the reason why they antagonized their Past Selves in V9 during the smoking trip, ooooooh.)
Anyways, that's all I noticed.
I refuse to think I'm wrong because they CAN go further back and avoid Atlas altogether, but they don't.

Misty Knight is one of the all too few black heroines in comic books. Part of the Marvel universe, Mercedes (“Misty”) Knight is a former NYPD policewoman who, after losing her arm in a bomb explosion, was fitted with a super strength prosthetic thanks to the genius of Tony Stark. Misty decided to go freelance as a private investigator, bounty hunter and unofficial government operative. Misty linked up with Colleen Wing to form the Daughters of the Dragon, an outfit similar to DC’s Birds of Prey, but with a more overtly commercial slant: these ladies are for hire, although not to known criminals. Misty has no super powers as such, but in addition to her prosthetic arm, she possesses formidable martial arts and firearm skills and is highly athletic.
Although Misty first appeared in Marvel showcase titles in the 1970s, it was not until the early 2000s that the character became fully established in the Marvel Universe, appearing regularly in the titles Daughters of the Dragon, Heroes for Hire and Valkyrior. In the page featured above, Misty, Colleen and Nick Fury Jnr, who has hired the women on behalf of SHIELD, are after a psychotic professional assassin gone rogue named Rutherford Winner. Clearly not able to go through regular channels, the crew are empowered to brook no interference in pursuit of their quarry!
The page featured is from Daughters of the Dragon #2 (2018) written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Joey Vazquez.

Slight change in pace, as the action shifts to team jnr and cinder. Oh yes, and we also got to see the rest of team CRDL and their new outfits, and Lil’ Miss’s fully unveiled design as well. Shall we take a gander? B)
Tumblr media
Like Cardin and Russel, I was looking at rpg-team-makeup type designs and dynamics for all of Team CRDL. If Cardin was the paladin and Russel was the rogue, then Dove I decided would be the swordsman. Kinda generic on the surface, but with a lot of hidden depth and variety. The cowl makes him feel a bit more medieval than the other boys, haha, almost like a fat friar? Course, most of that’s his armor being designed to bulge out ;), kinda like onion knight in dark souls. Unusual designs like his are fun to work with.
Tumblr media
Sky was actually the one I was most excited to work on out of the whole team. I’ve always though he was the handsomest boy in the group, and he always felt the most like Cardin’s right-hand man, even if literally nothing in canon confirmed such an idea. xD For him, I saw him as the lancer of the group. He’s also the only one who got a weapon redesign, albeit mostly just some small tweaking while keeping a lot of the main elements. Since I drew Sky as having sustained a major leg injury all the way back in Fixing Vol.3 (hello past me!), I thought it would be interesting to incorporate that fact in his later design as an older huntsman. His weapon was redesigned with more accessibility in mind, giving it some supportive qualities so it can act like a crutch when he needs something to lean on. I think his halberd was probably a rifle in the past, but here I changed it to a shotgun since those are especially good at close ranges and would put less strain on Sky needing to hold up his weapon to aim, now he can just point it in the general direction and spray. I also added an armored leg brace to his design. He can walk okay without it, but in high-stress situations, I thought it was better for him to have as much support as he could get, in case his knee starts acting up in combat. Designing physical accommodations for characters is fun, and is something I’d like to do more of in the future!
Tumblr media
The design for Lil’ Miss was actually basically decided since as far back as volume 5! She was designed by bofukeypok over on twitter, another instance of another sketchy huntsman inventing a design that me and butterfly fell in love with and just decided to canonize. The only changes I made to bofukeypok’s design were some coloring tweaks, simplifying some elements, the shoes, the tattoo, and adding in the detail that Lil’ Miss’s hair is actually a wig she wears(hey, way easier than actually trying to style her hair into those big spider buns every day xD). She’s super fun to draw, and I’m so glad so many people in the premiere liked her design as well!
I think that about covers it for character designs that were revealed this episode. Till next time!

Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 Spoiler-Filled Review
Tumblr media
Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, also known as Justice League x RWBY, RWBY x Justice League, or JLxRWBY for short, is an anime-inspired science fantasy action-adventure film, bringing together characters from the Justice League and those from the young adult animated series, RWBY. The latter is the flagship series of Rooster Teeth and began airing in 2013. It recently concluded its ninth season. This film was written by Meghan Fitzmartin and directed by Kerry Shawcross.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the thirty-second article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on April 30, 2023.
This 83-minute film begins with Superman's unexpected arrival on Remnant, since he has no idea how he ended up there. In classic crossover fashion, seven of the classic Justice League characters, find themselves in Remnant as teenagers. Soon enough the huntresses of Remnant, specifically Ruby Rose, Blake Belladonna, Weiss Schnee, and Yang Xiao Long, and their friends, work with them to learn why their planet has changed and stop a Grimm monster from destroying all that exists. Ruby, Blake, Weiss, and Yang all have superpowers of sorts, known as semblances, each unique to themselves.
I was intrigued by this film as an avid fan of RWBY and occasional watcher of superhero series like DC Super Hero Girls, Young Justice, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Birdgirl, Harley Quinn, Hamster & Gretel, Gotham Girls, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and She-Ra: Princess of Power. My interest in the classic superheroish magical girl anime Sailor Moon and the superheroish action series such as Sym-Bionic Titan, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, further made me want to watch this film. My excitement remained even after learning that the film takes place in the first half of RWBY's Volume 7.
There are differences from RWBY. For instance, Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang wear the outfits they donned in Vale, while Weiss can master her summoning of Glyphs, Nora wears the same outfit she wore in Beacon Academy, and the CCT tower at Beacon isn't destroyed, but is active. This is all because this film takes place in an alternate universe of sorts. That makes sense as it is a crossover film which has the same voice actors as the original RWBY series. One difference is Tiana Camacho, who voices Glynda in the RWBY original anime spinoff, RWBY: Ice Queendom.
It was nice to see Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Juane Arc, Pyrrha Nikos, and Lie Ren, the latter three part of team JNR, interacting with members of the Justice League such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman/Diana, Green Lantern/Jessica, Vixen, Cyborg, and The Flash. In the RWBY show proper Ozpin has been reincarnated as Oscar, other characters have either died, like Jacques Schnee (presumably in Volume 8), or haven't appeared in the show recently, like Glynda or Kali Belladonna. They return in this film.
Two other characters also appear: Adam Taurus and Sienna Khan. Adam Taurus was Blake's abusive boyfriend. Sienna Khan was killed by Adam to take control of the White Fang, a peaceful organization originally aimed at improving conditions for the Faunus, a group of people with animal traits. Taurus aimed to change the latter organization into a violent terrorist organization which would overthrow human society and replace it with a Faunus-led one. In Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, the latter two characters are only shown in a flashback when Blake remembers back to what actually happened during the series.
Apart from the voice actors for the RWBY characters, like Arryn Zech, Blake Dunkelman, Lindsay Jones, Kara Eberle, Miles Luna, Samantha Ireland, and Neath Oum, those who voice the members of the Justice League (Chandler Riggs, Nat Wolff, Natalie Alyn Lind, David Errigo Jr., Jeannie Tirado, Tru Valentino, and Ozioma Akagha) are just as talented. Riggs (who voices Superman) is known for his role as Carl Grimes in The Walking Dead. Wolff, the voice of Batman, has been recognized for his music, and roles in films like Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, and Ashby. Lind, the voice of Wonder Woman in this film, is known for various television appearances including as Danielle Sullivan in Big Sky.
Errigo Jr., voice of The Flash, has previously done voice work in Ridley Jones, The Casagrandes, Milo Murphy's Law, and Dota: Dragon's Blood. Tirado, voicing Green Lantern, has lent her voice to characters in dubs of Fairy Tail Zero, KanColle: Kantai Collection, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Tru Valentino, who voices Cyborg, is known for his voice work in Madagascar: A Little Wild, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, and Spidey and His Amazing Friends.
I personally remember Valentino best for his role as Cuphead in the short-lived animated slapstick comedy, The Cuphead Show. Finally, Arkagha, who voices Vixen, is best known for her acting as Harper Omereoha in Delilah, and her voice acting as Shuri in What If...? and Bumblebee in Teen Titans Go!, to name a few roles.
youtube
Admittedly, I wasn't sure about Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 at first. Surely, the fight scenes and the character designs were good, but was uneasy about the plot, even when Superman got on the scene at the film's beginning. However, the film drew me in, beginning with Grimm glitching out of control when killed, all while they still retain their goal, as soulless creatures, to destroy humanity, which as Nora puts it at one point in the film.
The humor of the characters, especially of Yang, lightened the mood. For example, Yang scoffs at the idea she will call Superman by his name, causing him to admit they can call him "Clark" (as in Clark Kent) instead. It was also funny that when Batman/Bruce Wayne fights people in the Schnee mansion, a person is playing the piano during his fight.
The fracturing and scrambling of memory, causing the characters to be confused about what actually happened, is at the crux of the Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1. It causes people, such as Ozpin, to appear, glitch into Oscar, and disappear, or others like Blake's mom, Kali, to say strange things. Some try and figure out the reality of their present predicament. Batman/Bruce Wayne, attempts this, but gets imprisoned. Others realize something is wrong, but are unsure what to do about it.
There is even a sub-theme about the power of privilege. Weiss criticizes her father, Jacques, of the ever-powerful Schnee family, for having a party rather than not repairing the CCT Tower. This bonds Weiss and Batman/Bruce Wayne together, as he says that the wealthy don't care about the plights of other people in any universe.
As would be expected, there are disagreements between heroes, with Blake and Yang annoyed that the Justice League is trying to tell them what to do, and vice versa. In fact, in a harsh scene which resonates with those who saw Volume 9, Cyborg asks Ruby who she is and she doesn't know. Although Superman says it is difficult to be a leader, he later questions her as team leader, which does not help her confidence! Even so, when Kilgore declares that Ruby is a child who is trying to be a leader, Superman reassures her, saying leadership isn't about age, but about your heart. He adds that although people will inevitably freeze and fail, that's what makes you human. The latter is a hint at the theme of self-acceptance enshrined throughout RWBY's Volume 9.
In the end, Team RWBY, Team JNR, and Justice League all work together, either by examining at holographic maps or tapping into their superpowers/semblances to fight the Grimm and save the day. Their fight is complicated by the fact that these Grimm are not ordinary, but can reboot, until they are electrocuted. This means that Ruby can't use her silver eyes, her ultimate "weapon".
This road to victory is not necessarily a simple one. One theme of Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 is that people lose something which is a part of them. For Vixen, her necklace is missing, and for Jessica, she lost her all-powerful Green Lantern ring. In the case of the latter, it seems she is having issues tapping into her powers at first.
What stole the show in this film was Juane offering to help her, showing care, patience, and understanding in the process. Ger power is trapped, and she can't access it. Jessica says the ring grounds her, stating it is a symbol of power, belonging, and control. Hence, without it, she feels unmoored and listless, like a ship drifting across the open sea. This reminds me of how Adora felt in the final season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, when she felt completely lost after the Sword of Protection was shattered, and even questioned whether she could help her friends. Coming back to this film, Juane tells her that her ring gets the truth of things and the truth of her, again trying to help her center herself.
At the same time, the film provides subtle hints to the trauma the characters have experienced in the past. Cyborg says at one point "what, you haven't learned to adapt thanks to childhood trauma?". Canonically, in the Marvel universe, Jessica experienced trauma herself as a kid. As such, the film's writers were not above retraumatizing the characters. For example, a person who looks like Pyrrha tricks Juane, and traps him, with Jessica, in a box, while warning them to not warn the Justice League about the reality. Juane is further affected when the Seer causes him to see Pyrrha's death, paralyzing him.
After Juane had already experienced the death of Pyrrha second-hand (Ruby saw it first-hand), seeing her in front of him caused him to lose all reason, and trust her. This isn't a surprise after all he has been through, so no one can hold it against him. It was good writing to have Juane tell Jessica about Pyrrha and still be able to help Jessica be more than her fear. In a powerful statement which is often not stated in fiction, he tells her it is fine to have anxiety flare-ups and implies she shouldn't be ashamed of them. All of this helps encourage Jessica to use her green lantern power to help them escape.
youtube
Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 hints at the ship-of-sorts between Jessica and Juane, which could be called "Greenknight", overriding any interest Juane had in Vixen, who he seemed taken in by, at first. The film also implies there is a ship between Batman and Weiss. In fact, Weiss states various times that Batman should stay. This could very well mean that she has romantic feelings for him. Their collaboration is an important part of the film, as both work together at an Atlas' computer lab to learn the reality of the world and why everything is glitching.
Funny enough, Diana is jealous of how close Weiss and Batman are getting. It could be part of the reason she wants to pull him back to "his" world. The writing of Diana, Weiss, and Batman in the film is good. It better than what some would claim, as it is clear that a Batman and Weiss ship, at least in the forms shown in the film, is possible. Otherwise, Weiss and Batman can fight well together, even when faced with impossible odds.
While it is not directly stated, there is queer subtext between Blake and Yang. In the show proper, both are in a relationship, mutually confessing their romantic feelings in the Volume 9 episode "Confessions Within Cumulonimbus Clouds". The ship between both, known as Bumbleby, had been semi-canon before that point, but was not canonized until that episode. In the film itself, Yang hugs Blake happily, Blake gives Yang the side-eye when she describes Diana "very strong", and Blake agrees to go along with Diana to Atlas because she is jealous. Still, Blake puts this aside and fight alongside her against the Grimm while flying through the air.
At other points in Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, Blake and Yang look at one another, with Blake explaining how she and Yang got to know each other. Furthermore, Yang worries about Blake after she talks about losing people. In a very touching scene in the film, Blake and Yang touch each other's hands through the cockpit window, with Yang saying she trusts Blake, while she pilots the aircraft. In the meantime, Blake puts aside her jealousy so she can fight alongside Diana against the Grimm even as she flies through the air.
Toward the end of the film, after Diana says she knows it is hard to fight under fire, Blake says that it is nice to kiss ass and bumps her ass with Yang. As Yang's voice actor stated in watch party for the series, "how did anyone ever think Yang was straight". Although it has not be directly confirmed, fans have stated that Yang is a lesbian. Blake was previously confirmed as bisexual. As Shawcross put it, Bumbleby moments were added because it was something the crew liked and said the moments. He also stated that "Blake and Yang had a lot that they could talk [about] with and relate to with Diana, Wonder Woman". The latter may have been a reference to past comments by those who say that Wonder Woman is a bisexual icon, later confirmed by writer Greg Rucka.
The last battle of Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, which involves riding on bikes, and tag-team fighting (like Yang and Blake), is one of the film's strongest. In a hint at what may happen in the second part of the film crossover series, it is clear that a villain named Kilgore, who created a virtual reality by mind-controlling The Flash, is also stuck there. As such, it is implied that someone else is controlling him, although it isn't clear who.
His plan to make the Justice League into teens, when they are "vulnerable", have the world rip them apart, and cause them to deal with emotions they ignore or regress as adults seems like a weak plan. He could have, just as easily, imprisoned them on their own world, instead of Remnant. The hubris of Kilgore is what takes him down. Jessica uses the equivalent of Ruby's silver eyes on the Grimm dragon, which has Kilgore inside, causing him to almost fade from existence.
Although everyone says their goodbyes and they all go back to their respective worlds, it is clear this isn't the end. All of the main cast, which are not part of the Justice League, wake up from what was supposed to be a training mission. Ruby's concern that someone created the virtual reality/simulation, a person from their world, setting the stage for the next film.
All in all, animation of Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 is well-done, and the designs are very colorful. There are even features that make it seem like a comic book, such as talk bubbles when characters are annoyed, and other expressions. All of the flowing animation which goes easily with the storytelling, voice acting, and the like, is no surprise as over 210 people, if not more, worked on this film. That makes it an even bigger effort than a volume of RWBY!
youtube
Unfortunately, Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 was effectively spoiled on social media before its release, in part because it accidentally aired early on Redbox on April 20, five days before its general release. This made animators ask fans to not post spoilers until the film came out, or say they feel "pretty hurt" by people posting clips from the entire film before its release on April 25th. On the positive side, this interest will undoubtedly help support Volume 10 for RWBY, so that the show's characters can have their stories continued, even if reported review bombing on IMDB continues.
The film was available on Google Play, but was later taken down for unexplained reasons. Although the stock of Rooster Teeth's parent company (Warner Bros. Discovery) has been falling, thanks to the rebranding of HBO streaming platform, and debt continues to accumulate, the film survived the cuts. That is for the best.
Adding onto what I've said so far about the film, I personally liked the design of characters like Jessica, whether you consider her gender non-conforming or not, the White Rose scenes of sorts, Weiss summoning powerful glyphs, and it is a lot of fun. Perhaps, there will be future RWBY features in the future which are not crossovers.
In certain ways, this film made me think of Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night, which I reviewed earlier this year, as it is also set in a virtual reality. In this film, the characters are forced into a virtual reality, while in Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night, I believe they chose to be in that reality.
Hopefully, in the second part of film crossover series, Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part Two, which may come out in the summer, there is more character exploration of Superman, Batman, Diana, and Vixen. This film focused on the internal struggles of Jessica more than the other Justice League members. It would be great to see a focus on the mental struggles of the other Justice League members as well. I would not be surprised if there are additional scenes with ships such as Bumbleby, Greenknight, and Weiss/Batman, since this film set the groundwork for the next one.
As a final note, although David Levy, who has long worked on RWBY, and on series such as Red vs. Blue, Camp Camp, various bands, and independent films, does a decent job with the film's music, it isn't that memorable. Maybe, Casey Lee Williams could either compose the music score of the next film, or at least a few tracks. That would ensure that the film packed an extra punch.
Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 can be purchased or rented on Prime Video, MoviesAnywhere, iTunes/Apple TV+, Redbox, and Vudu, or have the DVD and Blu-ray ordered from other online marketplaces.

Okay spoilers for Justice League x RWBY
So Kilg%re definitely had a partner from Remnant because someone told him about Dust and how to use it. Someone who definitely was the mastermind of the whole thing. But who?
Well first of all, I think the movie must take place during volume 7, because they’re wearing their third generation outfits, and at the end Ruby said “this wasn’t one of our usual training exercises.” When do we see them training? Volume 7. During volumes 8 and 9 they’re either fugitives from the law or trapped in the Ever After. So everyone who died in volume 8 is still alive at this moment.
Now, who wanted Team RWBY/JNR out of the way and could’ve devised such a plan? Who could’ve hacked Atlas’s computer system to trap the gang in the simulation? Also, you know what the glitches remind me of? The intro to volume 8, where they foreshadow Penny getting hacked into.
I’m pretty sure Kilg%re’s partner is Arthur Watts.

Okay so I’ve been thinking about rwby a lot recently and one of the things I was disappointed in in v8 (from a long list) was that when Yang fell, I actually believed they might’ve just killed a main character. And then the second the next gal fell, I was so mad because I knew they weren’t actually dead, and some bullshit was gonna go down. If they wanted to end on a “they might die!” cliffhanger, they shouldn’t have axed the whole team. So I wanted to do a little rewrite. Cut bc holy shit this got long
So Yang protects Ruby, having her aura break from Neo’s devastating attack. Neo keeps attacking Ruby, distracting her from using her silver eyes on Cinder. Yang’s being careful due to her aura breaking, maybe she even lost her robot arm to the void. Then Cinder bowls Neo over in her haste to hit Ruby. Yang, injured, sees her chance to remove Neo from the fight. She decides to sacrifice herself and tackles Neo off the edge, both of them falling. The rest of the fight continues (in my perfect version, Jaune heals Penny bc HOLY SHIT WHY WOULD YOU BRING HER BACK JUST TO KILL HER AND ALSO HAVE THE LITERAL HEALER KILL HER JFC) and the rest of them arrive in Vacuo.
We spend three episodes in the kingdom, working through refugee housing, arranging the huntsman to protect the borders against increased grimm, and the vault. Maybe there’s a fun shopping segment where everyone gets new desert outfits. It could be an attempt by JNR to pick up their spirits. Team RWBY (minus Y) is mourning Yang, Qrow is desperately trying to keep everyone’s spirits up despite the fact he just lost a niece. That’d be a cute scene actually, Ruby yelling at Qrow, asking why he’s acting so damn happy. And Qrow yells back “I already lost one niece, I don’t want to lose another!”
And then the fourth episode starts. The camera pans over a sandy landscape. We think it’s the desert, until a wave laps at the bottom of the scene. And then, we see Yang. She brushes herself off, maybe makes some quip about the afterlife being different than she imagined. And then starts exploring.
I think I’d change up the Everafter a lot. The fact that it’s “just Wonderland” is something I’ve seen lots of people complain about. The exact specifics I don’t have worked out yet, but I have a specific scene in mind. Back  on the storytelling grind, Yang eventually comes across Neo. She hasn’t upgraded her semblance yet, but Yang is still down an arm. Until the noise brings a Jabberwocker towards them. Neo runs and Yang tries to fight, until she realizes that the Jabberwocker relies on noise. It turns to go after Neo, as in her panic she’s crashing through the landscape. Yang decides to save Neo. Maybe this takes place in the looping jungle, so Yang sets up a noisy trap. She snags Neo and sets off the trap, distracting the Jabberwocker.
Neo pulls away, but doesn’t attack again. Yang sighs, saying “Look, we don’t like each other. But I have no idea where we are, and I’m guessing you don’t either. So until we figure out where we are, and how to get back, how about a truce?” Yang holds out her hand to shake. In response, Neo pulls out Yang’s missing arm and shakes her hand with it.
We spend the rest of the season swapping between Vacuo and the Everafter. We get Ruby angsting about her leadership, since she feels like she got her sister killed. We get the Ozs trying to hold off the merger while working with the Vacuo Headmaster and Council to balance everything. Maybe Blake is trying to act more like Yang to honor her, Weiss is spending more time with everyone because “You never know when you’ll lose them.” More Winter and Penny being friends on the battlefield, as some of the most skilled in defending against the grimm. Yang and Neo trying to work together. I expect a lot of funny (or potentially horrifying) moments of Neo using her semblance to fuck with Yang.
One scene I really want is to change the Herbalist’s smoke. Instead of them confronting their past selves, it takes them back to a moment they felt weak. For Neo, it takes her back to the moment Roman died. But instead of breaking down, Neo gets pissed. And she upgrades her semblance and breaks out of the illusion. Then we cut to Yang. It’s the story she told Blake about. But Qrow isn’t coming. She’s a child, pulling her sister in a wagon, facing down the grimm. She turns and runs, the grimm coming after her. She trips and lets go of the wagon, and the grimm turn towards it. She screams, arm outstretched. Then Raven pops in. She says “Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.” She effortlessly cuts through the grimm, and picks up Ruby. Yang runs into her arms. They stay like that for a moment, until Yang says “You didn’t save me.” Yang steps back, now an adult. “You never said that. I pretended it didn’t bother me. Pretended to be nonchalant. But I saw what you really were at Haven. Even if I wanted you to be different.” As the rest of the illusion fades, Raven remains. Yang gives her a questioning look. Neo fiddles with her outfit as Raven says “I couldn’t get inside the illusion. But my glass can pass through.”
Yang replies. “Huh, new trick.” She scans Raven. “How did you know what she looks like? And what she sounds like?”
Neo conjures a new illusion of Cinder, having her go on a rant about Raven and her betrayal. Yang giggles a bit. Then Neo has Cinder say “But the only thing I learned from her was that Raven was your mom. I knew her long before that.” In response to Yang’s questioning look, she replies “We all feared the brutish tribe leader.”
Yang responds “I’m sorry.”
Neo snarks back “Guess she ruined both of our childhoods.” she summons an illusion of Roman. “Wasn’t all bad though. If I hadn’t had a reason to leave, I wouldn’t have met him.”
They end up talking more, and Neo reveals she only went after Ruby because Cinder was too hard to kill. Because she had to avenge Roman. Yang points out that if she joins them, she could have help killing Cinder. After some banter about having criminals on the team, and how team RWBY were technically criminals themselves, they settle into an easy alliance. Sharing stories, working as a team, getting to know and appreciate each other.
As for what happens next? I don’t know. Is Neo lying to trick Yang? Is she genuine? Would she try to join the heroes team in earnest, or would she act as a double agent for them? Maybe she opens the door for Yang to go to Vacuo, but decides to stay in the everafter like canon. The possibilities are endless! I just really want a b-plot dedicated to expanding the train fight dynamic, and seeing how it’s changed as both Yang and Neo have grown.  Mostly I just want to see Neo be a little shit and expand on her backstory. I don't remember if Neo is from the same area the Branwen tribe raided, but it would explain why she looked so scared when Raven showed up.

I don't think the full show needs a full re writer ,a few things I'd change is how the time in volume 5 was used,,I'd all so change how they did things with Oscar n v4-8
I now there wasn't time but if there was id show/ change ,
🟣In v4
I'd show more of Oscar family, his town/village, friends he had and a bit more of his home life, and what he be giving up to go be the next ozma/oz,I'd all so show Oscar parallel to Ruby at his parents grave be for he leaves home tell them good bye, (if there dead we don't now we're his parents are in show)
🔴in v5
I'd show oscar trying to get use to Yang and Weiss,he seem fine around rnjr ,but maybe have yang a bit close off caz off ozpinand her growing dislike/trust of him ,I'd show more of ozpin and qrow friend ship so it hurt even more once he learn oz lies to him, I hunt at ozpin being good with kids caz he had some kids of his own once be for and in other lifes
Show a bit more training, show Nora warming up to Oscar maybe jaune as well,I'd show Oscar asking oz more about there merge,I'd show maybe yang or Ruby ask about the merge
Caz it seems like everyone from ozpin iner circle thinks it works a certain way I don't think I was lied about it I think they just don't understand it I'm not sure
🔵V6
Oscar Chara was fine here I'd maybe show him with team jnr a bit more and like with qrow and oz falling out it would maybe hurt when janue yell at Oscar and thinks he oz trying to trick them in episode 8 ,and Oscar would fell a bit more hurt by them just walking away
And this is something I've seen a lot of fans say they will change even fans who don't really like Oscar as a character but an episode 9 I would show Oscar trying to come to terms with how he's going to be the next odds and how he got his outfit because the fact that it was just brushed over was so weird,
I also show him I'm locking a bit of magic earlier in volume six towards the end maybe have him unlock the energy bubble shield but have him realize that he still can't use magic kind of like how we were told he can't use magic oral speed up his merge so I just have him do it that one time and that's it
🟡V7
Again there's not much I would change about his character if I only did get more development and volume seven but I would maybe show Oscar again spending a bit more time with team jnr,an show more of ironwood trying to get him to be oz,maybe show Oscar aura getting stronger like they did with jaune in episode"night off" ,maybe in episode were there all at Weiss place have Oscar interact with Penny maybe once or twice (both of their characters have a lot in common so I think it would have been nice if they interacted a few times and became friends)
I also actually show Neapolitan instead of having her go back to sender I would have Neapolitan text sender and then have her the sky's herself as an atlas guard and that way we would know that she's going after Oscar in the lamp we could see her send a text message to send her showing that Oscar has the lamp and that she's going to go after him and then we could also see cinder making her way towards the academy when she notices there's a bunch of chaos going on
I have the rest of the volume with Oscar's character play out pretty much the same
Except when he uses magic again to save himself from falling from Atlas
I may be have him take on a bit more damage that way it would make a bit more sense as to why the hound could get him so easily cuz maybe he's already taking us so much damage
and his Aura is low don't get me wrong the hound seems like one of the most fierce grims we've ever seen Salem make but considering all the training they said Oscar had and stuff even
though he had magic and he didn't want to use it cuz it merge them faster they could have showed him putting up a bit more of a fight when the hound attacked him
⚫In v8
Like I said in volume eight I would have Oscar have a bit more damage from his fall from Atlas even with magic and Aura protecting him I would also change how the others found him cuz I'm guessing they just tracked his scroll down and that's how they located him
I'd have it where they wouldn't find him at first I'd maybe have it where Yang shining ran were out patrolling getting people to go to the crater and that's when they see Oscar and he's of trying to fight grim and protect some people from the ground and while protecting the people he the others see him in the distance and they catch up with him and right if they finally catch up with
Oscar and try to maybe escort him to the crater because they think it be safer if he stayed there with the others and of mantle that's when they
get attacked by the hound and then you maybe see Yang in the others put up a fight along with Oscar trying to stop the hound from getting him but in the end we see the hound succeed and that's how Oscar gets captured
I'd also show maybe a little more interaction between Oscar and Salem and then I would show a few interactions between Salem and oz
I'd also like many others would show emerald maybe interacting with Oscar here and there so that way you could build on them becoming kind of friends/acquaintances and that way emerald deciding to go with Oscar what makes sense in the end he could tell her about how he had a few bad experiences with team Rwby and jnr once they learned that Oz headlight to them and they kind of took out their frustration on him a bit but he gave them a second chance and things
worked out and he could tell her even though cinders come back into your life she isn't really giving you a chance to really show what your worth and send her doesn't really care and then maybe have it were cuz emerald's hearing it from another person telling her that cinder doesn't care maybe she listens and finally considers leaving I would also maybe show cinder being a
lot more dismissive of emerald then she was and maybe have emerald get kind of hurt trying to help send her an episode 5 at Amity arena when fighting Penny and after getting hurt for cinder and having others tell her that cinder doesn't care then I would really have emerald believe Oscar
and then that's when like with hazel I would have her come in ask Hazel what he's doing and have it where Oscar Show Hazel the truth about the lamp, and then instead of having Hazel tell Emerald to leave I will just have emerald tell
them to wait for her and that she's deciding to leave as well and that maybe she's been on the wrong side helping the wrong people and then that's how I would have them leave off and just have the rest of the volume play out the same again
I watched some RWBY rewrite videos just to see what they had to say and why were literally almost all of them bad 😭 writing is not easy and y’all need to stop having this “it’s bad writing because it didn’t happen like I wanted it to happen” mindset about the show.

So they've revealed the trailer for the rwby and DC crossover.
I never read the comics for it, but I will say...
I like the animation. It looks decent.
Some if the character designs are throwing me off. Green Lantern looks a bit different from what I remember from the crossover comic design. Flash's design I don't really like. LOVE Wonder Woman's design though.
Also not sure about the decision to have the rwby cast be back in their Volume 1-3 outfits. JNR's models look... off for some reason?
I'm cautiously curious about the overall story.

Admit it, she looks a lot like Kairi in Kingdom Hearts II. And her skirt literally has hearts on it. It’s so close.
Honestly though, I think this is a great outfit. The exposed shoulders and thighs are a little head scratching since this is a colder climate, but Nora has never been one for making sense. The blue in her color scheme is more pronounced this time and I too have heard the pitch that this matched the transgender flag so Nora might be a trans girl. It’s a nice headcanon, but I get the feeling it’s not what they were going for. Still, feel free to go with it. The world is a happier place with people who believe in things. The fingerless gloves, sleeves and armor bands are also pretty cool, and in all it seems like a great new look.
Meanwhile...
Tumblr media
Don’t tell me he’s not turning you the more you look at him.
This majestic man. A fusion of his 1-3 and 4-6 outfits with the white pants making a return, plus a single black sleeve/pauldron with magenta accents for a nice asymmetrical look vs the all white left sleeve and the green vest to bring it all together. I know that’s a big run on sentence, but it’s a lot to take in. Plus now he has the ponytail again and it looks great. And who could ignore the knife? Clearly his father’s, last seen in V4, now displayed proudly on his upper arm. It’s a beautiful aesthetic and Lie Ren does it marvelously. 10/10
And then... their fearless leader.
Tumblr media
I’ve had that hairstyle before so I know it’s not the worst thing ever and I really don’t mind it much. I just don’t see why he would get his hair cut shorter and expose his ears (a new sight for us) when they’re in the icy north and you’d wanna keep your ears and head warm. Aside from that it’s growing on me.
The rest of the outfit seems fine to me. A second shoulder pad finally. New jeans and a new belt with a strap extending down to a loop around the left thigh for some reason... and some additions to his chest plate. Also... the end of the pumpkin Pete’s hoodie in favor of some black wrap clothing thing with orange on the inside that give him a little collar boost. It’s a good looking outfit. They all are. I’m excited to see they in action.
