Alela vs. Jinnie Fay
Magic: The Girlbossing, Round 1, Match 15
Propaganda under the cut:
Alela
Color identity: Esper
Featured art by Grzegorz Rutkowski
Ok she rewards instant/flash plays, which is fun because it throws people off and keeps them on edge, and she also GOADS when you deal combat damage, so you've got these tiny cute little fairys poking people and she's like oh you wouldn't hit me would you and if that's not the definition of GIRLBOSS GATEKEEP GASLIGHT idk what is. She's my Cunning Queen 💙🖤
Jinnie Fay
Color identity: Naya
Featured art by David Gaillet

She had chosen Mirrodin over the other planes and come to the aid of her friends there, and her perceived abandonment of the other planes – Theros, Alara, New Capenna – still haunted her.
Hi, I've been sick. I finished this up but couldn't post it because I've been sick. Have an Elspeth and Jinnie chapter. I'm obsessed with the idea of Elspeth returning to New Capenna after MOM.

MtG Token: 2/2 green Cats
Magic: the Gathering has been around for 30 years. There are 27,000 unique cards and growing. And a lot of them create tokens. While the official tokens are great, I have a need to celebrate the artwork of our (mtg) ancestors. Let's celebrate older artwork with a new coat of paint.
Token: 2/2 green Cat creature tokens
An uncommon token, Esika's Chariot and Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second
Portal gives us 2 cats. Jungle Lion by Janine Johnston and Elite Cat Warrior by Eric Peterson
The literal and graphical information presented on this site about Magic: The Gathering, including card images and mana symbols, is copyright Wizards of the Coast, LLC.

Hi Mark,
If you could snap your fingers and have whatever Magic rules you wanted changed, would you change the color identity rules to make cards with only hybrid mana symbols playable in any deck that could cast them (for example— Kitchen Finks would be playable in any Green or White deck, Jinnie Fay could go in any Green deck, while Boros Guildmage could still only go into decks containing both Boros colors).
I feel like the Commander RC’s current rules surrounding hybrid mana confuse a lot of people into thinking the mechanic is a lot less flexible than it actually is.
I would love for hybrid mana to work as intended in all formats.

What mtg commander deck is everyone in seven stations running? What’s the commander, general idea of what the deck is trying to do, and maybe some notable cards from the decks? I want to build some of their decks for you
-your gf
Okay this is going to be a long one but let’s go! I’m ignoring the fact that like a third of these people are illiterate lol. These are based entirely on the play pattern I think they’d like, not their personal colour identity (I’ll do a post on that someday)
Belladonna
Commander: Teysa Karlov
Deck concept: sacrifice value/aristocrats. Some control pieces. Can absolutely pop off when it needs to
Notable cards:
Pitiless Plunderer
Indebted Spirit
Reassembling Skeleton
Cassie
Commander: Itzquinth, Firstborn of Gishath
Deck concept: dinosaurs stompy. Lots of ramp, lots of big boys
Notable cards:
Earthshaker Dreadmaw
Sawhorn Nemesis
Belligerent Yearling
Nellie
Commander: Gluntch, the Bestower
Deck concept: group hug. Everyone keeps liking the nice things she’s giving them so they don’t look too hard at her massive board state until it’s too late
Notable cards:
Flumph
Selvala, Explorer Returned
Master of Ceremonies
Narcissus
Commander: Niv-Mizzet, Parun
Deck concept: storm. He wants to make you sit there for twenty minutes while he pops off (or tries) every turn. Also all his cards are the most expensive prints
Notable cards:
Pact of Negation
Deflecting Swat
Jeska’s Will
Ricinus
Commander: Meren of Clan Nel Toth
Deck concept: grindy reanimator. Lots of interaction
Notable cards:
Spore Frog
Plaguecrafter
Viscera Seer
Goldenrod
Commander: Katilda, Dawnheart Martyr
Deck concept: spirit typal with some (a fair number) of enchantments. Use the commander’s disturb effect for a fun double-up on Voltron
Notable cards:
Indebted Spirit
Clarion Spirit
Drogskol Reinforcements
Cassiopeia
Commander: Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
Deck concept: she calls it control but it’s just stax
Notable cards:
Propaganda
Drannith Magistrate
Aven Mindcensor
Stellaris
Commander: Rin and Seri, Inseperable
Deck concept: two entire old world species! It’s just a typal deck though. Also every basic is a different lovingly-chosen landscape
Notable cards:
Regal Caracal
Pack Leader
Jinnie Fay, Jetmir’s Second
Rhys
Commander: Rocco, Street Chef
Deck concept: food typal with a bit of group hug (Nellie sometimes borrows this one)
Notable cards:
Night of the Sweets’ Revenge
Academy Manufactor
Inspiring Statuary
Sel
Commander: Malcator, Purity Overseer
Deck concept: it’s just artifacts. He loves the shiny metal creatures
Notable cards:
Bronze Guardian
Tempered Steel
Wing Splicer
Oof that was long. But I had fun! Hope you enjoy them :)

The Legends of Modern Horizons 3 (fan fiction thread)
It has come to my attention that Modern Horizons 3 showcases a lot of cool characters yet doesn't give them any lore. So I will do it. Feel free to add your own lore for the characters (if anyone else actually sees it)
I will add I will not being doing lore on returning characters. So no Breya, Kaalia, Ashling, Laelia, Rosheen, K'rrik, or any of the planeswalkers or Eldrazi.
Starting off with everyone's favorite bird, Nadu, WInged Wisom
"When Kefnet fell and arose as a God-Eternal, all of Amonkhet wept, except, surprisngly, for Nadu. In spite of being one of Kefnet's most devoted followers, or perhaps because of it, Nadu understood that even the gods have limits, and decided that the best way to honor his memory was to share the teachers of The Mindful with all. Gods may die, but knowledge is eternal"
Imskir Iron-Eater
"Hailing from a race of metal-consuming demons on Mirrodin, Imskir Iron-Eater was named for his surprisingly picky diet. In spite of his violent nature and lack of any behavioral regulations, Imskir was an invaluable asset in the mining industry, regularly outright eating unwanted iron deposits to make way for the far more precious Darksteel."
Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd
"Jinnie Fay has had many prized show dogs, but perhaps none as beloved as Phelia. Unfortunately, Phelia never earned a blue ribbon because of her tendency to disappear right before the award ceremony. At some point Jinnie Fay decided to throw in the towel and let Phelia simply run free, and she's only ever been seen for a maximum of 10 seconds at a time after that day"
Kudo, King Among Bears
"While Ayula is the greatest warrior in the Empire of Bears, her consort, Kudo, is much more interested in diplomatic endeavors. He uses his unusual ability to transform others into bears in order to broker peace deals of mutual understanding. Although, in the events of a truly vile and capricious threat, he is more than willing to let his beloved do what must be done"
Shilgengar, Sire of Famine
"Angels pose a constant threat to the demons of Innistrad, but many demons were more than content to simply slay them as they come. Shilgengar, however, concocted a plan to slay the angels once and for all. Bringing a great famine upon Stensia, he told a young alchemist named Edgar Markov that angel blood was both nutritious and plentiful in this land (and he wasn't lying either). And as Edgar drank the angel blood, Shilgengar unknowingly created the first vampire, and brought about his own eventual demise"
Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury
"When the first Therosians discovered how to create fire, they knew not how to harness it. That fire burned and spread for months, murdering countless. In its burning it gave itself form, and thus, Phlage was born. While the Therosians eventually discovered how to properly use fire, how to create hearths and blacksmiths, Phlage would always arrive when it burned too bright, wreaking havoc upon the world until Klothys was born, sealing away Phlage for eons"
Herigast, Erupting Nullkite
"Innistradi dragons are remarkably rare, and solitary creatures, but perhaps none more so than Herigast. One day while Avacyn was corrupted, it awoke from its slumber and terrorized a small town in Gavony, shocking the townsfolk into fleeing the entire province. Little did the townsfolk know, that Herigast was protecting them. For it knew that an ancient entity was coming, and it would destroy them if Avacyn were to fall. It fell to the corrupting influence of Emrakul, however in its last conscious moments it rejoiced, for its last act was protecting the town that nurtured it to health generations ago"
The Necrobloom (Thanks to u/FoundWords on reddit for this incredible quote)
"When I die, child, bury me in the foul, fertile soil by the roots of the Necrobloom, that I might return to you once more."
>Note attributed to a "//u/Fo/un//d/Wo///rd/s", found inside an empty casket. Name partially crossed out. Unkown sending address or potential recipient. Requires further investigation.
Skoa, Embermage
"Born in the great desert of Jamuura, Skoa was always fascinated by the great volcanos and dragons of Shiv but was told it was far too dangerous to travel there. Skoa was never a really good listener. Pledging her allegiance to the plane of pure heat, Wildfire, she hopes to one day concur the mountains of Shiv, not for glory or revenge, but simply because she can"

Second Name: Named Common Runners-Up ~
Our runners-up this week are @grornt, @helloijustreadyourpost, and @izzet-always-r-versus-u!
@grornt — Affluent Adopter
Oh, to be a single and carefree jazz musician surrounded by metal dogs. This card calls to mind a great vision that’s more interesting than it is flavorfully cohesive. I mean, there are indeed dogs around the Cabaretti, and I feel that they could be taken under someone’s wings. Jinnie Fay makes dogs, which is awesome, so maybe in the future the Cabaretti can have more Dog support. And for the general Dog-species decks, this card’s a slam-dunk. There was that cat/dog couple—Rin and Seri, right? Something like that. A great addition.
In limited, you could have fun with the Goldhound reprint for mana acceleration and then let them loose in the world. It’s not going to do anything a normal Treasure isn’t going to do, and it’s a suer specific form of mana “acceleration” that’s not out of the question for artifacts, treasures, etc. I really just don’t know what to think about the question of whether or not Goldhounds specifically need adopting? I don’t want to think about that, though—I want the warm fuzzies of Jazz Musician With Puppy Posse. And that comes across quite well!
@helloijustreadyourpost — Llanowar’s Fury
What’s up with all the awesome green cards this week? But I digress. Llanowar Elves in constructed formats are always a popular staple and there’s nothing wrong with having strong constructed-oriented mana acceleration. Limited payoffs mean that people have to hope something like this wheels—but it won’t, heh. Hoping for a common later in your packs can totally work, and wow, in sealed? Incredible work. People making casual elf decks will love this, too, no question.
Flavor makes sense on Dominaria! I like the way you tied the elves and the old fantasy spirits into each other. This is the kind of card that I really click with? Like, sometimes there’s a super-specific story to a card, and that’s fantastic when something can be so self-contained. A card like this that’s expanding upon a world—and upon known information about the world, with a callback—feels like we’re part of something greater that doesn’t need to be solved per se; it’s the existence of Llanowar, the layout, the customs, the ‘other’ under our control. I dunno, there’s nuance I’m not really able to get out right now, but I still think it’s a good card.
@izzet-always-r-versus-u — Vengeful Spirit
Now that cycling is more or less evergreen, this card got a lot more awesome. The creative use of templating (for those wondering: Diligent Farmhand) makes sense, and ooh, the spookiness of having this creature be one of the lost family members from Ancestral Anger? Awesome. It’s a great callback. I think when Magic was smaller, it was easier to do these sort of self-contained cards. Muscle Burst isn’t exactly, well, bursting with story, but this card? Really nice on that front. Wish the name was a little less...sorta-generic. It makes sense and it’s not bad for a card; I’m seriously surprised it hadn’t been used before.
I like how cycling is utilitarian here, but additionally, if you’re constructing a deck, you can cycle it for a lethal burst of Anger for another Spirit that’s attacking. In limited, the double-draw is awesome because it plays into so many archetypes that can use that aggro. UR or RW would probably be the best ones, which is rad. Overall? Lots of angles approached here. Top-notch design.
Commentary’s being written slowly but surely. Be good in the meantime! @abelzumi

LiS characters at an Commander/EDH Table Headcanon
A/N: This was originally supposed to be a “What MTG color identity would the LiS 1 characters be?” And then I sat down and went “Lmoa no, this is idea way funnier.” and besides parts of that original HC will inevitably bleed through here. I guess really the only fanon “changes” here would be that I’ll be mentioning cards from FAR past 2013 so ig do whatever mental gymnastics you need to do there. Oh, and we’re supposing that any of the characters could afford to splurge on multiple commander decks.
Max Caulfield
you wouldn’t think it because of how genuinely she just appreciates shuffling up, sitting down, and spending time with the other Blackwell nerds, but Max can and will optimize her decks to a fault.
It’s less about “competitive viability” and more because she just appreciates brewing highly interactive spell-slinger stuff.
Has a pet Narset extra turns deck. You cannot convince me otherwise. When it pops off, she definitely excitedly texts Chloe about being “a time master in AND out of game”.
The only person on Earth I would smile at and encourage after I hear the phrase “I cast Expropriate for free. Responses?”
One of those “I’m addicted to R/U please God help me break out of this archetype” people but is somehow adorkable about it
Will target you if she picks up even the slightest hint that you’re about to Cyclonic Rift and not just because you’re... you know... casting Cyclonic Rift.
Chloe Price
Very much loves jank. Something about the “isle of broken toys” triumphing against whatever monstrosity everyone else brought really appeals to her.
Loves the idea of certain archetypes, but as long as a given list guarantees that she’s playing lots of cards and doing lots of things on her turns, she’ll mainly just build whatever she thinks is cool.
As a result, Chloe has run Yuriko and Beckett Brass decks in the past.
“Come on Max, did you really think I’d pass up being able to beat you all with pirates? You already know I'm ALL over that. Ninjas are hella awesome too.”
It doesn’t hurt that Yuriko can wipe the floor with everyone if they aren’t careful.
Doesn’t gravitate towards a specific color or color combo but plays aggressively in whatever flavor she finds appealing.
And I do mean AGGRESSIVELY. Chloe loves the serotonin rush of slapping a ton of guys down and then turning them all sideways even if it leaves her open to dying in the next few turns.
Even if she doesn’t take things super seriously, she will definitely high-key target you in the next game if you fucked her over in the previous one.
Kate Marsh
Kate took some convincing that Magic wasn’t some weird ritual since her parents almost certainly forbade her from even learning about it as a kid and filled her head with satanic panic BS.
Once she actually sat in on a game or two (and after Max showed her Rin and Seri), she was able to set her compunctions aside and will show up to game night when her schedule allows.
in the same way Chloe builds what she thinks is cool, Kate definitely builds what she thinks is cute. (*cough* Kwain *cough*)
The first deck she built on her own was almost certainly Jinnie Fay go-wide.
Will cry inside (and honestly maybe a few tears escape on the outside.) if you board wipe. Not because her board presence is gone and she’ll need to rebuild but because you just killed Molly, Holly, Taylor, and every other token she’d given a loving name.
Warren Graham
Is THAT combo player. An absolute menace. What else were you expecting?
Maybe it’s just my bias against Warren showing here, but he’s definitely the kind of guy who goes “Oops! I win!” out of nowhere after just playing solitaire in the background for 5-6 turns to set up.
Still keeps some lower power stuff around in case people get too upset about it though.
Much like Chloe, doesn’t really have a preferred color combo. Unlike Chloe, he builds whatever he can optimize to a disgusting degree.
Usually wins game 1 pretty easily unless Max stops him but going into game 2 understands that he’s consigned himself to playing archenemy for the rest of the night.
His pet card is probably fuckin’ mana drain or panharmonicon or some shit idk.
Tune in next time for my thesis on why Victoria would play Queen Marchesa jk.
... unless.
