Wait, yeah I suddenly remembered
If you like complicated storytelling (same story multiple ? routes told through VOCALOID music videos, mangas, novels, and anime’s) and anime-style tragic stories (everyone in the main cast has some sort of trauma I think), found family, and most importantly character deaths, memory reset, and time loops
Check out Kagerou Project by JIN (song route MVs by sidu and Wannyanpuu), a… multimedia urban fantasy story (?) that initially started as VOCALOID songs..??
I think I didn’t get too deep into the intertextual (? Music videos though..) story itself but I really admired the storytelling through repeated musical motifs, visuals/symbolism, and lyrics. If nothing else, the character designs and MVs themselves are cool to watch and listen to

But even then that would be such a weird way of putting it because if you think Sidu's old art was bad okay (bad take but you are entitled to your wrong opinion (yes it is less good than Sidu's later art. I still like it tho)) but they're still... just one person? "Before Jin started working with better artists" it's the same person, though? I know Wannyanpuu didn't come in the project until later but artists is plural and implies both of them. Also Mizuta's still image for Jinzou Enemy is Fine especially for the era. Why not just say "some of the earlier songs didn't have animated music videos so I'll be including fan made ones"..... where did you even find that post..... people are so bad at understanding this series
it was in the #kagepro main tag and also ditto to everything u said cuz likeee the MVs are fine.. 😭 maybe its just a difference in standards cuz these days some voca mvs are masterpieces but also like i think theres something charming abt older mvs you know!

The anime adaptation sucked for a number of reasons but the music? Mwah
Oh yeah, I did not like the anime for Kagepro at all, tbh. Right after the show concluded, I made a long post about how I thought the show could have been adapted into a longer, 2 cour season which explored the multiple routes, because I was very disappointed. As a long time Kagepro fan, I was infuriated by how things like Otsukimi Recital (one of my favorite songs) seemed to be crammed into the show at the last minute and to this day I still don’t quite  understand exactly what happened with Momo and Kido combining their powers in that episode, but after talking with a few people in a (now deleted) Kagepro discord server and watching Bread Box on Youtube talk about the series as a whole across multiple video essays, I’ve become more at peace with it.
Read more just for me rambling with no cohesiveness about the series:
Kagerou Project, since the beginning, was a complicated way of story telling. I have never had the patience to sit down and read the light novels completely, but I know what happens in them from people discussing them a lot. But, the songs, as a starter, are honestly the best medium for telling Kagepro’s story, because they cover all the routes. Lost Time Memory? We learn about route 1 and route xx. Outer Science and Summertime Record? Part of what made their plot points some impactful was not only were they the two different endings to the story, the way the MVs were released allowed us to be tricked into thinking Outer Science was the final MV we would get and then only 3-4 days later we got to see all our kids grown up and happy and thriving, and the fandom cried.
I’ve always been fascinated with series that derive from Vocaloid works, because from a meta narrative standpoint, it’s amazing to see how the creators and the method of storytelling evolved. I’m sort of all over the place right now with my points, but I love Kagepro as a song series because it used its music videos and music to tell a story with crazy things like parallel universe and reseting time and good and bad endings in a way I would normally see in a video game. Jin and Sidu and Wannyanpuu, you can see how not only does the music and the story its telling improve (from the vagueness of Jinzou Enemy with Ene being a Miku rip-off, because we had already gotten several songs from the Vocaloid community about the persona of the artificial voice watching its creator) move on to more diversely animated videos with unique character designs that tell us about how a character sacrifices herself for her family, how two different selves of one person die and survive in different timelines, and how one route has to happen for the good route to exist.
I agree with you that the anime did well because of the music. But that’s because for those of us who was connected to the music series already, those little easter eggs were the only thing really drawing us in. We were hoping to see our favorite song animated completely, animated and fit into a part of the plot we weren’t exactly sure it aligned with. Right now, I feel like Kagepro the series is a mess with the manga having almost a neutral ending, the novels ending but Jin writing more, the anime being the good end but poorly explained. Like I said, I’d being lying if I found it to not be perhaps the worst and most rushed and chaotic adaption of the series, but like I said, part of Kagepro is the journey, and so for me, just hearing Jin finally leave behind the Vocaloid voice and sing the happy ending for his own project for the first time, of course I’m going to get emotional because I saw my kids happy, it was messy and it was rushed and the studio prioritized another anime project in the studio than MCA, but I still cried because everything at the end was happy. I actually agree with a few people but Shaft is the best studio to do Mekakucity Reload, because Shaft is the best at crazy time stories and does the flat coloring and monochromatic style of Sidu the best. (You wouldn’t want Kagepro to go to A-1 or KyoAni, who gloss up their series with sparkles or in A-1′s case, can have a quality dip later on in the show). I think if Shaft is the studio for Reload, in order to make it successful, they need to be working on only that at the time. They aren’t like Bones who have several studios inside them that are dedicated to a few animes that come out consistently. Shaft needs to completely rethink the pacing of Reload, focus less on the jokes of the show and more on the plot, maybe even rearrange how the story is presented to us (maybe introduce us to the bad end first? Have the terrorist attack happen midway into episode 1 or even then end of it? Show at least one route where Kuroha kills everyone, so Summertime Record is angsty and happy-sad because we understand the timeloops)
TLDR cause I’m already drained from this: Most anime are made to promote manga sales. Shaft put less care into MCA and was banking on people watching for the songs. We don’t need the songs in the anime. We don’t need music videos. We need the plot, like the manga or the light novels deliver. The song series was a way to convey the plot. Reload needs to convey the plot as an anime, and the studio needs to care and give it a bigger budget. I can live with a crazy broken neck head tilt every five seconds if it means we get all of that in exchange.

what kagepro could have been if jin had consulted even a single woman....
Ok no it’s hilarious because for a long time every single non-Jin person working on Kagepro (Sidu + wannyanpuu) was a woman and the only man to be visibly part of the team (Satou Mahiro) doesn’t seem to have any involvement aside from illustrating the manga. Then Asahimachi (open fujoshi) joined later on. Regarding people who aren’t Part Of The Team but still had influence, Jin has talked about how his little sister gave her input on the story.
It’s not from talking to women it’s just. The specific women he was talking to were also all Like That

Main ships from kagepro?
Hoo boy.  I’ll preface this by saying I don’t strongly ship anyone in Kagepro and personally prefer all their relationships to remain platonic within the story itself.  (Which isn’t to say I don’t wish them happiness with a potential romantic partner someday if they so choose, but it’s not my main objective of the series.)
That said, let’s get the first out of the way…
ShinAya: I have a lot of mixed feelings on this pair.  As much as the tragedy of it hurts me, as far as attraction goes I don’t understand why Ayano would fall for Shintaro in the first place (pun not intended).  He honestly treated her like shit before she died (although he’s definitely improved a lot since then as a result), so it doesn’t make sense to me why she’d harbor romantic feelings towards him initially. >.> As a friend she wants to help through his depression, certainly.  But wanting to pursue anything beyond that at the time is unhealthy IMO, and I really wish Jin hadn’t officially confirmed she had a crush on him/made it the entire focus of her new song…
KanoKido: I used to kinda ship this when I first got into Kagepro, but in the “angsty” sense where I liked the idea of Kano being jealous over Kido actually having a crush on Seto? *shrug* Nowadays I just see them all as siblings, although I don’t deny there’s a special spark there.  The banter bw them is cute (if a bit uncomfortable when it crosses into violent territory given Kano’s past).  I’m mostly indifferent to it now, although the amount of hate the pair gets kinda scares/puts me off significantly. =/ It just makes me sad to see so much fighting within the fandom itself over something like this, and wish people would just let others ship what they want in peace.
SetoMarry: This pair means a lot to me symbolically since Imagination Forest was one of the first songs that got me into the series, and it never fails to make me cry as a result.  As far as actual compatibility goes, it is a little bit squicky if you think about the deeper implications - and even sadder when you realize Marry will eventually outlive Seto. ;( As they are currently though, they are the pure definition of “adorable”.
HaruTaka/KonoEne (for the sake of simplicity I’m counting them as one even though I’m aware Konoha is technically a different entity): I didn’t think much of HaruTaka at first, seeing it as simply a typical “tsun-tsun” ship.  However, I do like that Takane has a legitimate reason for liking Haruka, in that he brightens her day by being able to smile despite his pain/approaching death, and she genuinely admires him for that.  It’s something I think was only really addressed in the manga, so I wish MCA would’ve also explored her inner emotions, showing how he inspires her to keep living life to the fullest (her supposed “suicide” in the manga notwithstanding…)
HibiHiyo: While I thought the pair would be cute at first based on Wannyanpuu’s PV, the more I learned about the characters’ actual personalities the less appealing it became to me.  Hibiya is honestly pretty gross in the novels, and Hiyori’s domineering demeanor can be especially off-putting (although I admittedly like her a lot more in the manga where her bossiness came in handy to drive off Momo’s fans).  Nowadays I prefer to ship her with Damian from Batman instead. *shot*
HibiMomo: I actually quite like this pair, since they’re a mirror of ShinAya, and thus also representative of the theme of “moving on” IMO.  (Assuming we ignore MCA’s ending, since I honestly think both Ayano and Hiyori should’ve stayed dead.)  They remind me a lot of Damian’s and Steph’s dynamic, and while the “bratty little brother” trope might not work in a serious relationship now, I do think Hibiya has room to grow and mature, which Momo can help him with.  (Whereas Shintaro has less of an excuse to act shitty due to his age IMO.)

no cuz i really do have to emphasize just how amazing the scope of kgpr is like these people were not signed on to create any of this initially like jin just posted some songs and one of them (kagerou days) went super viral, and then wannyanpuu, with no monetary incentive not even officially working with jin at that point, creates a fan music video that is so impressive that it goes viral as well and not to mention how like, this one interview w jin translated by vgperson (ill link it later) stated just how uncommon something like this was, this being 1.) a vocaloid song featuring a character other than the vocaloid themselves and 2.) a fmv of this scale. cuz like during that period of time, the earliest of early vocaloid music just had still illustrations with the song playing, yes people have been creating more and more impressive mvs during this period (strobe light and mozaik role predate kagerou days fmv) but in spite of that, wannyapuu's kagerou daze still stood out immensely for being incredibly unique for that time period (and it honestly still holds up amazingly even if its not canon to kagepro lore) and then just 3 years later that song and those characters from this super viral song and music video end up appearing in an anime being screened across the nation and abroad like do you know how insane that is? can you imagine just being a hobbyist with some OCs and then suddenly receiving an entire television series in less than 5 years like what even... its almost difficult to comprehend

🌻🌻🌻 and an image I would like to title: “Is this the next object Hibiya pushes me off of?” Only a few more hours until Kagerou Day starts in Japan!!! I’m hoping we get some good news, or any news at all. I cosplayed Momo’s idol costume a few years back, so I decided to remake her costume based on her new design! 📷: @docampoalyssa
