Dead Boys 1977

Interview with Clevelander Dave Treat about his new photo book that peaks into some daze in the pre-legendary life of the Cleveland punk rock masters.

It’s easy to forget that, by their initial demise circa 1980, the Dead Boys were considered a kind of dark summation of the original American punk rock explosion. A blistering live act no doubt, they were “the Stooges played fast;” glam rock sans glitter; even proto-power pop given the best hooks of the second album. One of the ultimate flameouts in rock’n’roll history, their punk status was cemented just under the ubiquitous Lower East Side canon. And heaven forbid, they were from Cleveland.

But as the years roll on, the layers of their status have shifted and deepened. Being from Cleveland – actually forming out of bands who pre-dated the CBGB scene (Rocket from the Tombs, Frankenstein) – makes them punk originators, not just the out-of-towners they were sometimes painted as when they moved to the Big Apple in 1977. Their debut album, Young Loud and Snotty, remains perhaps the most consistently invigorating American punk album of that era. Singer Stiv Bators’ too-soon death, guitarist Cheetah Chrome’s long journey to find himself, it all inadvertently lent gravity to the band’s more immediate and welcome sense of humor that put them in stark contrast to the sometimes pretentious CBGB scene.

And in the last few years, Chrome has been busy as hell, making new records, playing Dead Boys songs again with various friends, and doing occasional solo acoustic sets that can be genuinely tear-quelling in their intimacy and memory-dredging.

If you haven’t checked out Chrome’s 2009 biography, A Dead Boys Tale: From the Front Lines of Punk Rock, you should! It not only gives a flailing firsthand account from one of punk’s template tossers, it articulates to outsiders that Cleveland was the equal to NYC as THE post-industrial blank canvas for young, drunk, and broke punks to come up with their own thing. Further, you will find no trust fund kids in his story, no relocated Connecticutians sliding into ripped jeans and hoping nobody finds out their dad is a Wall Street lawyer. As “punk” has incrementally defined its soul as a working-class genre, the Dead Boys story becomes more and more foundationally iconic.

And now this beautifully bleak collection of photos and quick quotes, Dead Boys 1977: The Lost Photographs of Dave Treat. It’s a perfect companion to the first few chapters of Cheetah’s bio. Half are gloriously raw shots of the band awkwardly striking poses around the desolate streets of downtown Cleveland as a newly minted, four-piece Dead Boys. The second half is color photos from two 1977 Cleveland shows. Then the book closes with achingly alone solo shots of Stiv, also shot during one afternoon (Treat lived in the same building where Stiv and Chrome roomied.) Stiv had an uncanny visage that could be simultaneously madcap and melancholy. For a guy who would whip it out anywhere on command and who spent the majority of his adult work life yelling loudly on stage, he remains a mystery man in many ways. And you see that mystery in his eyes and bent body through these pix.

As you arrive at the end of this book, you feel as if you just spent a day and night with the Dead Boys. Your inclination on closing it is to swig back the last backwash, throw the bottle down, and say “See ya later” to the guys, walk out onto Detroit Ave., and never look back, just like they did.

The photos herein were meant as a no budget attempt at “promotional rock photos,” but the band soon added a fifth member and moved to NYC, so these photos have been sitting in a box since then. Save for one small gallery show where a few of them were displayed, this is the first time they appear.

I asked Treat about the book and more.

Did you grow up in the Cleveland area?

Yes, on West 41 St., off of Clark Avenue.

So when and what were the initial inspiration to drag these pix out and do something with them?

Actually, I didn’t know I still had them. I was cleaning out some boxes and there they were. That was three years ago. I went to Blue Arrow Records and started talking to Pete the owner, and he liked the pics. He had Brittany Hudak look at them and she wanted to do a gallery show at Gallery 61-- owned by Byron Miller, who also printed them for me -- with a 25th Anniversary Show honoring the loss of Stiv Bators. That is how it all started. Clem Burke of Blondie came to the Cleveland Stiv show on Waterloo and gave us a number and recommendation to Lethal Amounts in LA. The gallery show was first, with Cheetah playing to a sold-out crowd after at the Monty Bar.

How did you first meet up with Cheetah and Stiv?

I moved to an apartment on Giel Avenue in Lakewood. About three months later, Stiv moved into the building. We met and became friends. Cheetah was always there. One note: Stiv and Cheetah wrote some of the songs for Young Loud and Snotty in their bathroom. Cheetah on the toilet and Stiv in the tub.

The pic with the band next to the dumpster – what was the impetus behind purposely shooting in garbage? Were any of the members like, “Can we take nice shots somewhere, like maybe at Swingos?” I know Cheetah mentions the first Ramones album cover as inspiration.

No nice pics, it was decided to go downtown and find the place we shot the photos. Cheetah liked the Ramones album cover. Collectively, we wanted the urban decay, the garbage and the dilapidated buildings. We didn’t want them lined up against a wall, but something unique to them.

So how present were the Ramones and the notion of this new "punk" music in your life personally?

For me, the intro into punk was through the Dead Boys. Meeting and seeing their passion for this new sound was amazing. It pulled you in. Finally, something new in Cleveland.

What were the live music clubs you'd go to, and were there local bands you could stand? I know Cheetah's told me how it was mostly lame blues or ‘60s cover bands, if any live music at all...

Pirate’s Cove, Agora, Jicky’s After Dark, Piccadilly’s.

Pere Ubu, The Pagans, Styrenes.

(A history-smushing aside: The Pirate’s Cove turned into Peabody’s, which I frequented in my youth (Replacements, Pixies, Godfathers, Death of Samantha, Rocket from the Crypt, among many), and only died a few years ago; and the Agora is still there, operating on/off.)

Can you just give me a random crazy Stiv story, and maybe one that is not expected from the "wild man" he's known as?

Came home from classes, started knocking on the door, looked in the hall and Stiv was having sex with someone. He looked up, waved, smiled and put up his index finger to say just a minute. I laughed and went upstairs.

Was Stiv a late night, drunkly opening up with his feelings kinda guy?

No, not at all. He was always upbeat. He liked having a good time, pulling a good prank…never melancholy.

I grew up in Cleveland - Parma Hts., to be exact -- and the whole Catholic thing about Cleveland is one of the simmering things inside the Dead Boys that I always loved, and makes them so "Cleveland," no matter their fame gained in the Big Apple. But did religion actually come up much? Or any stories of desecrating churches or anything?

Religion never came up. Nothing too outrageous. Stiv putting his finger on his throat and barfing on a Denny’s window while people were eating. Cheetah pissing out the window or back porch. Cheetah mooning two ladies walking on Giel Avenue. Not too crazy yet.

I think, while the NYC scene was peppered with slumming rich kids, reading Cheetah's book and looking through your's, you definitely get the sense there was none of that in Cleveland, that the Dead Boys and the few people in the actual "scene" were not exactly getting their rent paid for.

No rich kids here. Went to classes in the a.m. and worked in the evenings. Paid for everything myself.

That "ruin porn" early-70s punk era is always mythologized, but as Cheetah has pointed out, it wasn't some huge scene. At underground or new rock kind of shows, there might be 15 people in the crowd. Do you agree, and any stories of hanging out at shows with Cheetah and Stiv, with 10 other people or what have you?

Cleveland at that point was in a free fall. Our mayor had the city’s garbage men deliver a porn poll. We were called the Mistake on the Lake. The city would go into default. There were no jobs. My roommate, after I moved, and another student at Cooper actually organized the First Annual Cleveland Smoke-In. Attached is a copy of the flyer. In short, good or bad, you got by.

In the book, the mentions of how dead it was downtown, Cheetah saying you could just stop in the middle of Euclid Ave. and take pictures -- do you have memories of just exploring downtown Cleveland then? And did you have a feeling that this really was the end of a city, an end of an era, or did you think Cleveland could "come back?" Would you want it to "come back?"

As far as downtown, it was dead. The malls opened in the ‘burbs and people didn’t need to go downtown. I shot the guys in the middle of Huron. We were there 10-15 minutes. No cars or people. Can’t do that now.

What did you think when the band decided to move to NYC?

They had to, there wasn’t a market in Cleveland. When they first went to CBGB’s, there was no turning back. They found where they needed to be, and I am glad they did.

How did you hear about Stiv dying, and when was the last time you'd heard from him?

I heard there was a benefit for Stiv and Babylon-A-Go-Go, 6/29/90. I went there and saw people I knew. They told me what happened. *

Where do you live today; what are you doing for a living; and what do you think of the more bustling downtown Cleveland of today?

I currently live in Solon, Ohio. I am a currently consulting in residential construction. It’s about damn time. Actually the renaissance of downtown and the Flats has been doing incredibly well. I’m proud to say I’m a Clevelander.

ahauntedfool: My two cents. I feel badly for disappointed fans who have invested so much time, energy, and possibly even money, on their beloved celebrity, only to see him acting in a way they do not agree with. That must be very hard for them. Maybe I can offer some hope and positivity?I believe no two relationships are alike, and none are black and white. Who really knows everything about their relationship besides them? But it does seem like they are together, and if that is the case I hope they make each other happy. I truly mean that. Love is not something we can plan for, but life is short and happiness is everything. I am still a fan of N, I enjoy many of his films and photographs, his charisma is pleasing, he makes me laugh and he makes me smile. There are some things I don’t like about him, but that’s how it is with people. We are all complex and flawed individuals, and in our imperfections there is beauty. I don’t know much about D yet, but I think I’ll check out her work, watch a few of her films and read some interviews. Maybe I’ll learn something about her that inspires me in some way. With that being said, I think they are an attractive couple, and I love seeing him smile like that. They appear happy in those photos and I hope they are. Maybe this relationship will be good for both of them. Oftentimes we learn from our partners how to be better people.

They clearly wanted to be seen. Have we been fooled by NR with some fake persona all these years? Has he drastically changed due to DKs influence? Is he whipped? The “lie” was so JJ could say he moved on first. It had nothing to do with manipulating Norman’s fans. Anon: Daily mail has just released an article on NR and DK confirming their relationship and they’ve got a few new pics in there and in one of them NR is looking directly at the camera. I guess we know for sure it was planned and a bit staged now.

Me, I love Daryl and I will always love Daryl, he is a real sweetheart and the subject of many a fantasy, Norman not so much, I could never fantasise about someone like him -a shallow and highly privileged actor who can have any beautiful woman he desires at the drop of a hat, and knows it. His priorities are clearly material things, this set up relationship with DK that will be played out in the public eye will just be linked to and part of that agenda in some weird way…(I do have my theories as to why he is so keen to play along with it, but best kept to myself) So seriously people go back to your Daryl (or nice sweet Norman) fantasises… Whatever helps you sleep at night…

Anon: Sorry…this is a long one… People seem to focus on others being upset because he lied. But I think a lot of people are upset for 2 main reasons. One, they really don’t like DK. It is hard to swallow watching someone you like, date someone you hate. I had a good guy friend date a girl that the rest of us LOATHED. She was just a horrible person and we were all so disappointed when he started dating her. When we asked him why, he just replied, “well, she is not like that towards me”. Um..ok…so since she’s “nice” to you, it’s ok that she is a a-hole to everyone else? It lasted all of 4 months, but I just remember we were all so disgusted. So, anyway, I think that plays a big part in the fan hate. Fans love Norman and think he is wonderful/nice/kind/good to his friends and fans and they can’t understand how he could fall for someone who is the opposite of all those things. The second reason is the cheating. Let’s face it, this didn’t start AFTER she split from JJ. We would be naive to believe that. Personally, I think it started during the filming of SKY. They are together constantly, in the middle of nowhere, I am sure they got very close. Even if there was nothing physical, they could have been having an emotional affair…which is often worse than physical. Although we can argue that with his schedule and her being with JJ, they didn’t actually see each other a lot after filming SKY was over, they still could have been texting and calling, thereby continuing the connection and closeness that was formed during filming. Looking back, I can’t help but wonder if someone DID see them hooking up in a NYC bar (before the break-up with JJ). If they did in fact have an emotional connection, add a lot of alcohol to that and you can definitely lose control for a minute. Obviously, this is my own speculation, but no matter when the physical aspect of their relationship developed, I truly believe, the affair started long before it. As for the people talking about a possible pregnancy. I can see it. Even though Norman is pushing 50 and may not want a baby, as some people pointed out, it may not be up to him. There are many ways for a woman to “accidentally” get pregnant. Someone, I think it was PR wife, mentioned that DK’s star faded long ago. She is definitely someone who will do anything to bring attention to herself. Well, having NR’s baby would certainly bring the spot light. It may be far fetched but I think DK is really sketchy and I would not put it past her. I guess only time will tell if there is a baby as well as how long this thing will last. We shall see…

Anon:I gave a heads up months ago that Diane had a plan and that she and Norman were playing out a fantasy as if they were living their film “Sky”. Health issues included. But guess what comes next (not the end) ;)

Day 48, Singapore

Im in love with this place. I adore it. It’s a wonderland of art and design and gardens with something beautiful to discover around every corner.

I had breakfast at the hostel and managed to extend my stay by two nights.

I was waiting for Mark but it was getting on, and I’d been looking forward to not having to wait for anyone when I’d be travelling alone, so I went out told him I’d find somewhere with wifi and meet him in an hour.

I went to Topshop first because I’d seen it from the bus yesterday and I wanted some good basic tops. I felt happy being somewhere so familiar but I didn’t buy anything. I wandered through the shopping centre but none of the shops seemed to be particularly budget friendly. There were so many restaurants I wanted to go in but I was meant to find one by the gardens later on to meet Mark.

I came to the gardens a little late and had roast duck noodle soup at the Peach Garden. They told me when I went in there wasn’t wifi but I really wanted that duck noodle soup so I thought okay, I’ll just go to the one next door because they do appear to have wifi.

I went next door and bought an expensive tea although it was iced when I’d rather it be hot. I asked for the wifi password but they said they didn’t have any, even though there was a network. By this time I was already an hour late to meet him and I didn’t want to keep spending money and there weren’t really any other restaurants nearby.

I had tried but I didn’t really mind not being able to meet him because I haven’t had a day to myself in two months and I love being on my own. Last night he’d also been starting to say some things that would suggest he was in fact a male with blood flowing through his body and he’d gotten up in my personal space and at one point I thought he was gonna kiss me and He touched my butt when we said goodbye and I’d had a really great time with him since I met him but I really really didn’t want anything going in that direction either. It had turned out that he was a really amazing photographer and he’d taken some pretty good pics of me last night and he said he was gonna take more today because he’s building a portfolio for when he gets back to Canada, so that was a bit of a shame. It’s not wrong to want nice pictures of yourself that aren’t selfies!

So I looked around the gardens by myself for hours and they were really lovely. I liked seeing the groundskeepers lounging around on the grass on their breaks and seeing Singapore’s landmarks between the trees from different angles. I enjoyed spending exactly however long I wanted on things without anyone trailing along. I do so thoroughly enjoy being by myself. I spent ages in the gift shop as well looking at all their nice things.

After looking around the gardens some more, I walked along the front of the bay to the Artscience museum. Outside it was a beautiful pond covered with lily pads and purple flowers.

I went up to the top floor where there was a free exhibition on about space. The carpet was really soft and plushy. I sat in the dark room and watched several short films. First was a rather obnoxious pop music video. I’d read outside that the film was played on a loop and I hoped this wasn’t all it was. Next though, was a short film about space training and I was really impressed with it. You could tell it wasn’t professional but I thought the mise en scene and editing was really good and they’d made a couple of space suits which must’ve taken so much work but you could see the staples on the cuff or how they’d used screws or bits of wood on some bits. The next video was basic and all white and a sequence of actions were repeated about 4 times. A lot of people left during it. Maybe it represented how time is a loop? The next video was suggestive of the surface of another planet but it essentially showed clusters of ice and frost melting or freezing. Going to the exhibition reminded me how much I like art and film making particularly. I want to improve my skills in it. There was another free exhibition downstairs but it involved being given a device and looking around the gallery for the 3D stuff on it like on pokemon go and I didn’t really want to do that so I left.

Afterwards, I went to the shopping centre next door just to look around. Man, this place is so fancy. Every shop was designer like Versace or Dior or Jimmy Choo. Everybody is so stylish and their clothes are all so nice and neat and clean. Today has inspired me to work harder, to look better, to have more many and to create more.

There was a canal in the shopping centre! With actual boats going up and down the middle. At the end of the canal was a big circular pool that people were eating around. There was an inverted glass dome that I’d seen from the other side when I was outside and it now had water swilling in its bowl and gushing into the pool. That was really cool.

I bought a fruit salad, some hello kitty cookies and some OJ and sat outside by the pool with the lily pads again. A girl sat down next to me and asked me if I was English and if I lived here. She said that she’d borrowed a rickety old bike from her hostel and people kept asking her if she lived there because why else would she have such a shitty bike. Her name was Malka and she lives in New York. We spoke for about an hour and it restored my faith that I wasn’t doomed to friendship after friendship with old men.

A little boy who said he lives in Singapore came over and started trying to play with the fish and get them to come over. Malka was talking to him. I think she said she’d done some volunteering in Nepal with kids so maybe that was why she was so good at it but I didn’t know what to say, even though I wanted to join in.

The sun set and it was really orange. Malka went in the gallery and we agreed to hang out tomorrow. I walked over a bridge to downtown and down the bay on the other side. The skyline in the evening was gorgeous. Each building was a column of gleaming iridescent scales defining the skyline with angular tops.

I sat down where there was a stage (called the Esplanade) and band set up because it looked like something was gonna happen. The smooth marble bench felt really nice on my butt. After half an hour, an adorable girl with a cute, round smiley face and a black velvet jumpsuit came on the stage. Her name was Gail Belmonte. She sang loads of her own songs and she was amazing! I really enjoyed it.

After she finished, I went across into the food centre and got a chicken curry with rice and a cup of tea and they were so delicious. There were some issues in India with the chicken on the bone being almost entirely grizzle but this just fell right off and it was so so nice. There was also a really sweet, joyful little girl and her Dad or Grandad sat nearby and they were really cute. They were Asian but they were speaking English to each other.

I went back to sit by the stage for the second performance but I didn’t like it so much so I made my way home. I saw a huge snail on the ground!! It was the size of a satsuma.

Anon: Mod what's going on? Has something happened with the DK crapfest? Why are people acting like it's confirmed they are together? I thought everything was still speculation?? He still put out that denial. I can't believe he would lie and then risk getting caught 2 weeks later, it's not even like he could hide in Barcelona with the media circus going on so why deny it to make himself look the worst he could look? --mod-- Nothing new has happened. Still just speculation and theory right now.   

Anon:  A wee bit creepy how someone follows his friends and family on sm so closely don't you think so? Specially the mother of his child. Maybe her way to show she stalks his relationships    Anon:  The thing about believing Norman and Diane have been "just friends" for 2 years is that even though they barely spend any time in the same city, she's the only one he's been romantically linked to in tabloids. So if "just friends" is true then seemingly norman hasn't been in any relationship since late 2014? Possible, but pretty unlike him, hasn't he been a serial dater since the 90's? Unless he's hiding a Secret Girlfriend in GA 8 months/yr, Diane is the only one ever spotted with him, so... --mod-- He's been spotted with lots of ladies but since she's famous people notice her more, people here have speculated about him being with a bunch of different women in the last year or so, but again since non were famous the public at large never took notice. It also depends on what your definition of relationship is, I mean he could have a few relationships where they sink each other's battleships but it's nothing serious.

    Anon:  I know DK is off topic and I have no agenda here since I really don't care about the DK/NR thing but just wanted to share that this whole time I kept hearing her name and that she was the girl in Inglorious Basterds I assumed she was the character Melanie Laurent played (since that was the blond I remembered). My mind is now blown that I was remembering the wrong blond female character the whole time and they aren't the same person. LMAO. --mod-- 🤣🤣🤣

After months of relative silence on the Chopra/Jonas relationship front, Memorial Day Weekend brought an explosion of renewed interest. Exactly one year after their Met Gala debut, the two were spotted getting super cozy. Only a few days later, Chopra mirrored the post with her own Instagram story of Jonas captioned, “Him 😍”. The post was taken on the other side of the world as the couple hopped on a plane once again, this time from India to Brazil for a concert performance by Jonas. Chopra took the Instagram video from her spot in the audience, capturing the singer in action like a number one fan (or super cute girlfriend?). There’s been no official announcement yet, but after these super sweet matching posts, we think it’s safe to say that something is definitely going on here and whatever it is, we fully support it!

Jonas and Chopra have continued to be attached at the hip. MaiAda & Nick's Published Martin Johnson House Wedding

Of all the San Diego wedding DJs in the county, Maiada and Nick chose me to DJ and MC their Martin Johnson House wedding on Saturday, August 11, 2018. This wedding was published on Green Wedding Shoes on October 11, 2018 as “Talk About Tropical: Colorful Tiki Bar-Themed Wedding in San Diego.”

THE LOVE STORY

Since she was a little girl, MaiAda had assumed that, one day, she would get married in Rome and that, after the ceremony, a carriage pulled by white horses would meet her & her new hubby in front of her favorite fountain and carry them away over the cobblestone streets. Nick realized this was a tad impractical, but, on a family trip to Italy for Christmas in 2016, Nick proposed at the fountain in front of the Pantheon on a moonlit January night.

Together they enjoy brunch, going to Target, bike rides with their dog Fluffy-gans who has his own little bike basket, playing Mario Kart, tattoos, the zoo, watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, complaining about patriarchy, road trips, going to their fave local watering hole–Kindred, downing tiki drinks, going to concerts, remembering their trip to Japan, singing along to Dashboard Confessional, playing nerdy board games, and Nick cooking while MaiAda eats.
