BGM: U2 - I Will Follow
I have two days off. This morning, I went to a hospital in this town to see my doctor. There, we talked about my recent events for a while. After that, I went to a pharmacy to get medicines. There, in a LINE group, I joined an interesting discussion about politics. For example, how will Japan be able to cooperate/collaborate with other countries to achieve/realize the world peace. The constitution says that Japan shouldn't commit war/conflict with our army. However, some people say that ideal has been becoming an out-of-date, unreal ideal. Should we "improve" the constitution? Like that, we enjoyed the discussion a lot.
At 1 p.m., I went to the main house of my group home to see a woman from the city office (she needed me to write my signature on some papers). After that, I had lunch and took a nap, and I enjoyed reading by spending the whole afternoon (even though I had wanted to do several things, I couldn't concentrate on them. Also, basically I am super-lazy). As I wrote above, tomorrow would also be a day off so I decided to do nothing, and just try to have a rest.
In another LINE group, a discussion was going on. It was about how to have a place to enjoy communication or discussion based on "interactive" respect for the other. For example, I can see that on Twitter there are very silly "conflicts" or "battles" with lack of respect toward others. THEY just try to blame someone with trying to use critical words… In my case, I once tried to join such severe discussions (definitely, I must have been "soaked" into that atmosphere). Now, I rarely use Twitter and also am trying to keep my mind calm. Also, I've been trying to have a tolerance, even though I am basically moved by my mode very easily.
This evening, by remembering these discussions, I enjoyed reading Jie-Hyun Lim "Victimhood Nationalism" again. Also, on WhatsApp I sent a message to a friend about an ongoing scandal about one of the biggest TV station, Fuji TV. As you probably know, this scandal has been reported as a TV personality Masahiro Nakai's scandal (probably a sexual one) in public, and also it has been extended as a Fuji TV's employee's scandal. For me, it seems like the MeToo movement in the US (or literally the worldwide "revolution").

[Women in Finance 3] Women who broke the glass ceiling
Top women financiers in Korea say concerted efforts needed from families, companies and society to create level playing field.
Tumblr media
By Kim Young-won & Jie Ye-eun ([email protected]) ([email protected])
"The Korea Herald is publishing a series of special reports on the glass ceiling in the financial industry, focusing on South Korea’s market compared with other major economies. Funded by The Korea Press Foundation, the series will evaluate where Asia’s fourth-largest economy stands in terms of gender equality, will reflect on changes being made and will explore ways to boost inclusion in the sector." Ed.
Looking back at her 41-year career in South Korea’s finance sector, Sohn Byung-ok, former CEO of Prudential Life Insurance Korea, recalls how she struggled to strike the right balance between work and home. Sohn, the first female financier here who made it all the way to the top, said it is never wise to be a superwoman and that she believes in excelling simultaneously at home and at work. “You need to make wise choices and then prioritize things that you should focus on,” she said. “You need to seek your family’s understanding when you have projects to be done, and also (make clear) to the company that you have family matters to deal with. You need to have your voice heard from both sides.” After starting her career with Chase Manhattan Bank in 1974, it took her nearly four decades to break the glass ceiling in the finance sector -- and more than 130 years since the country’s modern banking system was introduced in 1878. Before 2011, the year Sohn was named CEO of the foreign insurance company, Korea had no female representation in the top ranks of finance in the private sector. Asia’s fourth-largest economy, which elected its first female president seven years ago, still has no women in public office supervising financial policies and regulating markets. Sohn’s rise to the top led other women to follow suit. The state-owned Industrial Bank of Korea named Kwon Seon-joo as the first female CEO in 2013, and Citibank Korea welcomed Yoo Myung-soon just last month. The list of female CEOs in finance also includes KB Securities CEO Park Jeong-rim, IBK Capital CEO Choi Hyun-sook and Cho Jee-eun, incoming CEO of Lina Life Insurance.
Tumblr media

The Bank of Korea has women on its monetary policy board. Suh Young-kyung, former deputy governor of the central bank, was named as a board member in April. Now, for the first time in the bank’s 70-year history, it has more than one woman on the board. Lim Ji-won, managing director of investment bank JPMorgan Korea, has been a BOK monetary policy board member since 2018.  Their presence, perceived as quite significant, was still not enough to shake up the industry, which has long been considered a boys’ club. The proportion of female executives among Korea’s financial companies was 4.1 percent as of March 2020, according to a joint study by The Korea Herald and corporate data research firm CEO Score. Women’s chances of getting promoted to executive positions in financial companies was also slim. While the companies had 37 executives for every 1,000 male workers, they had only 2 female executives per 1,000 women. Untold stories Scarce female representation in the industry today owes much to the corporate culture of the past, when men were considered the main breadwinners.
Tumblr media
(The Korea Herald, CEO Score)
Chai Hyun-joo, who became the first executive director of securities operator the Korea Exchange last year, said financial institutions have traditionally been “men-only” clubs even at the entry level. “We had just a few women when I joined (the Korea Exchange) in 1991, and we were given back-office assignment such as typing and receiving telephone calls,” she said. “It was the time when women building their careers was rare, and because of that sort of dominant perception, people from the Finance Ministry and brokerage companies were often reluctant to talk with me, and asked to switch their calls to male colleagues, implying that they don’t want to talk business with a woman.” What Sohn and Chai had in common was not only the difficulty of balancing work and home life, but also surviving in the “gentlemen’s club” -- alone. In contrast to their male colleagues, who often received helpful support and advice from their male superiors, the women fought obstacles to advance their careers, oftentimes on their own. Since most of her colleagues were men, Sohn said she had to make extra efforts to keep “one step ahead” of her peers in terms of both work quality and quantity, adding that she studied for a master of business administration at night and additionally learned English and accounting. Being nervous at work was an everyday affair. “Wherever I go, I was the only woman on the team. … But because of that I was compelled to complete the job wishing to get assigned to key posts while being careful not to make trouble with male colleagues,” said Chai. “I was obsessed to work better, thinking that me doing my job well might open new opportunities to my (female) junior colleagues.” Forget about glass ceiling The financial sector still lags behind in achieving gender equality, and this could pose serious risks for individual businesses as well as the nation’s economy, according to experts. “The issues regarding the lack of female leadership will likely get even worse if no effort is being made, and that is why the government has recently looked into the problems and revised a bill to require listed companies to have at least one woman on their director boards,” said Kim Woo-chan, a finance professor at Korea University Business School in Seoul. “The fact that there are glass ceilings and discrimination for a particular gender means human resources are not efficiently utilized, which could undermine the nation’s overall competitiveness,” he added. The newly revised bill, which went into effect in January this year, requires a listed company with 2 trillion won ($1.83 billion) in assets or more to have at least one female board member. After a grace period that runs through August 2022, some 150 listed companies meeting the criteria must have at least one female outside director in the boardroom.
Tumblr media
(The Korea Herald, Gallup)
According to The Korea Herald survey, 44.3 percent of the 517 respondents said there needs to be a law that mandates a company have a certain number of female executives. Women respondents were more supportive than men, with 57.5 percent of female respondents saying they agreed with the idea, while 30.3 percent of males agreed.  The study also suggested that female representation in top management could lead to improved business performance. Slightly more than 40 percent of survey participants said increased female representation would have a positive impact on their companies’ performance and earnings. Despite the government’s drive for gender equality, an increase in the number of women across industries and a slow change in perceptions of gender roles, the glass ceiling still exists. But it is not unbreakable, as Sohn’s experience shows. “A glass ceiling exists almost everywhere, and it was worse than now some years ago,” said Sohn, who now serves as an outside director of Standard Chartered Bank Korea. “As the financial market now has some C-level figures, it is the time for women to stop moaning about the glass ceiling, and to start breaking the glass ceiling in their minds and do their utmost to excel at work,” she said.

Fantagio currently still in distress + contract disputes with their artists
On July 25th, it was reported that the Korean Entertainment Management Association (KEMA) sent Fantagio a notice on July 23rd as CEO Wei Jie does not hold requirements to run an entertainment company.
The Korean Entertainment Management Association (KEMA) had sent four notices to Fantagio.
As the current CEO Wei Jie has been currently running the agency illegally for six months despite being unlisted as an entertainment company, as the former CEO of Fantagio was removed from his position unfairly due to buying the most shares of the company.
Fantagio has previously commented that they received the notice and that the CEO position change was not unfair and illegal due to the resignation of the previous CEO, delaying the registration process.
Fantagio has paid the penalty for not being registered as an entertainment company and illegally operating under the previous CEO name in accordance with the Act by the Development of the Public Culture and Arts Industry.
Another situation that the notice details is the contract disputes with their four of their artists like Kang Han Na, Im Hyun Sung, Kang Hae Lim and Choi Yoon Ra.
Noticeably, Fantagio will take legal action against their actress Kang Han Na for breach of contract, as she has sent a notice early in March this year about terminating her contract.
Fantagio has stated that they received the notice from Kang Han Na about the termination of her contract but has cut off contact with the agency.
They continue to state that she has been promoting independently for the last four months such negotiating drama appearances and decided to take legal action against her due to the breach in her contract.
Kang Han Na’s exclusive contract with Fantagio has two years left with the agency (2020). She will appear at the press conference for tvN’s ‘Familiar Wife’, on July 25th.

Combo Breaker 2018: The Full Results
Combo Breaker 2018 has concluded. Chicago's biggest fighting game tournament has wrapped up for another year and all of the champions have been crowned. Shacknews has covered a couple of the winners already, but for those who missed the weekend tournaments, here's a helpful recap. We'll also make sure to add some of our own thoughts here and there.
GO1 vs. SonicFox (Photo Credit: @TischPhotos)
Dragon Ball FighterZ
Shacknews has a full recap of the Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals up and running right now. SonicFox went into this event having never beaten consensus best player in the world GO1, but Combo Breaker went just a little bit differently.
1st - SonicFox (Dominique McLean) 2nd - GO1 (Goichi Kishida) 3rd - Dogura (Ryo Nozaki) 4th - NyChrisG (Christopher Gonzalez) 5th (tie) - Kazunoko (Ryota Inoue) 5th (tie) - HookGangGod (Eduardo Hook) 7th (tie) - Fenritti 7th (tie) - Doza (Glyn Mendoza)

Shacknews has a full recap of the Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Grand Finals available now. NL and Xian break through to shake up the Capcom Pro Tour leaderboards.
1st - NL (Sim Gun) 2nd - Xian (Kun Xian Ho) 3rd - Infiltration (Seonwoo Lee) 4th - Nemo (Naoki Nemoto) 5th (tie) - Verloren (Hyungsuk Kong) 5th (tie) - Bonchan (Masato Takahashi) 7th (tie) - Dogura (Ryo Nozaki) 7th (tie) - Oil King (Li-Wei Lin)

Tekken 7

Injustice 2
The Injustice 2 Grand Finals went down to the wire between Tweedy and DR_Gross. Gross brought the heat with Green Lantern throughout the finals, but Tweedy was eventually able to ward off one last GL onslaught, thanks to Starfire's effective zoning techniques. GL wasn't able to close in and Tweedy took the tournament.

Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- 2
This was another wild Top 8 that culminated with a barnburner of a Grand Finals. Korea's Jaewon "Daru I-No" Kim just needed the opportunity to prove himself, but has had trouble getting to tournaments in the past. He even relied on a community fundraiser to get him to this very event. But he made his opportunity count, as he narrowly edged out Fukuda "Teresa" Norihiro in a Grand Finals that left both men emotionally spent by the end.

1st - Daru I-No (Jaewon Kim) 2nd - Teresa (Fukuda Norihiro) 3rd - Hamad (Hamad Akbar) 4th - Kazunoko (Ryota Inoue) 5th (tie) - PepperySplash (Justin Campbell) 5th (tie) - BjornSonOfBear (Alain Kim) 7th (tie) - Blaze (Manny Blaze) 7th (tie) - Kid Viper (Jason Srouji)

Killer Instinct
One of the most exciting tournaments of the weekend that went largely under the radar was Killer Instinct. Combo Breaker has always been one of the best places to catch the top Killer Instinct and this was no exception. While he fell short last year, there was no stopping Latrell "Amenty" Thomas in 2018. He has a total mastery of new character Eagle and former Evo champion Darnell "Hollywood Sleep" Waller had no answers. This was a master class in how to work opponents with KI's last character.

1st - Amenty (Latrell Thomas) 2nd - Hollywood Sleep (Darnell Waller) 3rd - Bass (Kenneth Armas) 4th - Thompxson (Deion Thompson) 5th (tie) - SonicDolphin117 (Andrew Honigman) 5th (tie) - Storm179 (Calvin Phelps) 7th (tie) - DevilMayCare (Michael Figueroa) 7th (tie) - Nicky (Nicky Iovene)

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite
It's hard to argue against the idea that Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite has lost pretty much all of its steam since its damning Evo snub. While registration numbers have remained consistent, many of the game's high-profile players have left, viewership has dipped, and Capcom looks to have abandoned the Marvel fanbase... again. But the Marvel tournaments are still incredible to watch, as evidenced by Combo Breaker's Top 8.
Watch as Kevin "Dual Kevin" Barrios caps off an incredible Losers Bracket run in the most epic fashion possible. Don't put Hawkeye in a box, because all he needs is his bow and arrow.
twitch_clip
1st - Dual Kevin (Kevin Barrios) 2nd - DekillSage (Jon Coello) 3rd - Banehollow3789 (James Marroquin) 4th - NyChrisG (Christopher Gonzalez) 5th (tie) - Abbock (Brian Murphy) 5th (tie) - Lariat GOD (Tyler Hinson) 7th (tie) - Emorawr79 (Jose Ramirez) 7th (tie) - Noelbhungry (Noel Brown)

Super Smash Bros. Melee
The best players across both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Smash 4 were attending MomoCon this weekend, so there was a lot of A-tier talent missing from Combo Breaker. Still, the tournaments were exciting and it was an opportunity for some new faces to shine, like Melee winner Kalindi "KJH" Henderson.

opfernationalismus
erinnerung und herrschaft in der postkolonialen welt
sachbuch von jie-hyun lim
erschienen 2024
im verlag klaus wagenbach
isbn: 978-3-8031-5197-1
