This Rotten Work Playlists: Rachel Edition!

As @evelynhug0 so kindly requested, I'm going to release each of the main character playlists (and one for the main ship, Rachel and Daiyu) once a week leading up to the release of the book!

First up is Rachel Barsky, my beloved lesbian ex-Chosen One with anger management issues and lots of heart. After killing the evil Headmaster of her magical high school, she's doing her best to settle into normalcy at Normie community college by living with her two best friends, Zell and Stebbie, cooking a lot of Kosher BBQ, and attending history and theater classes. (She's a self-admitted drama queen, what can she say?) There's just one problem: her annoyingly attractive rival, Daiyu, shows up on the first day of classes, and Rachel's instinct to shoot lightning first and ask questions later is going to get everyone into a whole heap of trouble.

Here's a sample of her character description:

"Yep, that's me: a face full of freckles and close-set brown eyes full of ghosts. A head of frizzy blonde curls only able to be tamed when pulled into fishtail braids and a nose that’s a bit too big and pinched and a mouth that’s too loud for anyone save Zell and Stebbie. A chunk of the top of my left ear missing thanks to a fire blast from Daiyu in the Tournament. Medium height, medium build, only muscles coming from a lifetime of running and years of reluctant dueling training I got after school. A girl who was born during one hurricane and who lost her parents in another.

I make sense in this household of misfits and dreamers, kids who are a little too strange to fit in right."

A DP ficlet inspired by @wsoupofpain ‘s Substitute Blank AU which I am thinking about all the time, but specifically also her DannyMay piece found here. Also, there’s a playlist associated with the AU now, the decision that i have made.

Her fingers want to shake as she zips up the suit, but she doesn’t let them. Tucker is watching her suspiciously; she hadn’t wanted him to be here, but he wouldn’t let Danny go alone. She didn’t want Danny here either but the portal was in his basement, so she didn’t have a choice. She doesn’t want them here, but she’s glad they are, because Sam isn’t sure she has the strength to die alone.

Danny is poking at buttons, doing his best to remember how his parents turned the portal on. It’s complicated, and while she doesn’t know what is involved, she does know what comes next. It doesn’t turn on properly. Someone goes inside. Something comes out.

A deep breath. A hand on her Magen David. Responsibility and love and fear all mix inside her. The last few moments she may ever have, with friends who don’t remember her laugh and smile and bad jokes the way she remembers theirs. Her hand tightens on the points. She can be the one to protect them this time. She lets it go, and slides on the gloves.

She understands that she needs more to be able to keep this sustainable. She can’t keep fighting like this, with equipment she doesn’t understand and a body that can’t take a hit. She has to keep the town safe and she can’t bear to ask it of him, and something deep inside her aches for it. The power. The responsibility. She has always been fighting wars she cannot win; but with this she may have a chance.

Sam Manson has thought through every scenario. She is choosing this fully informed and aware of what comes next. Someone has to die inside the portal, and she has decided it will be her. Danny finishes setting the dials and she finishes tying her shoes. Tucker sets his phone down. Her world condenses so that it fits inside Danny’s basement.

There is only this - the hastily-made patch on Danny’s suit, an attempt to make it her own and not his; the bruises and scrapes the suit covers up, accidents and trophies of fighting ghosts with mortal flesh and bone; Daniel Fenton in front of her, alive wholly and completely, because she did not kill him and put the responsibility of the world on his shoulders. He asks her if she’s sure. She says no.

There is only this -

Her footsteps echoing as she steps into the portal.

The hum of the fluorescent lights above her.

Danny and Tucker watching, worried. She loves them.

Her hands want to shake as she reaches for the button.

She doesn’t let them.

Both Catholic and Jewish wedding ceremonies have a lot of music involved, so I blended the two into one playlist and barely shrunk it down to 10 tracks.

Prelude Two Men in Love by The Irrepressibles

This song, along with others, would be playing while everyone is waiting for the ceremony to get started. I picked this mostly because of the lyrics (I had trouble deciding which lyrics to grab for the preview below) which reflect actively asking each other to stay, talks about hiding and running from each other, and finally acknowledging that they're in love.

Wedding Party Erev Shel Shoshanim by Harry Belafonte

This is a fairly traditional choice in Jewish weddings to accompany the wedding party processional as they take their places for the ceremony, but it's also just really beautiful and I thought Harry Belafonte would fit with the old men in love vibe.

Processional and Circling Kumi Lakh by Zach Mayer

In Catholic traditions, the bride would be walked down the aisle separate from the rest of the wedding party, whereas both bride and groom are escorted with the rest of the party in Jewish tradition followed by the bride circling the groom 7 times under the Chuppah. If they decide to have their processional separate, I envision this song accompanying the second processional, but mostly this is for the circling tradition. Winter is past.

Offertory Ag Críost an Síol by Seán Ó Riada

Catholic tradition includes Mass and an open offering of communion. I think Steve might struggle to feel he should take communion, but I also think it would be important to him. This song would be during the preparation and setting of the Eucharist for Mass. I chose this arrangement in part because, despite being an Irish hymn based on an Irish prayer, it sounds like it draws from some of the Semitic roots of a lot of hymns which felt in keeping with the blended ceremony.

Communion Be Thou My Vision by Narrow Way

Once communion is prepared, this song would be for the taking of communion. I couldn't find my favourite translation/arrangement of this song which is even more fight-oriented than this one, but this still feels like a good fit. Be my Shield and my Sword feels very coded to our boys. This is another old Irish hymn, translated from the Gaelic Bí Thusa 'mo Shúile.

Be Thou my Buckler, my Sword for the fight; Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight; Thou my soul’s Shelter, be Thou my high Tow’r, Come raise Thou me heav’nward, oh Pow’r of my pow’r.

Presentation of Flowers to the Holy Mother A Mhuire na nGrás by Fionnuala Gill

I feel like it would be important for both Steve and Bucky to invoke their mothers at their wedding, but I feel that they would both especially want Sarah Rogers to be recognized here, so I selected another old Irish hymn for presenting flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The lyrics here are so very much appropriate for Steve and Bucky, too, that I'm just going to include the whole translation.

Recessional I'll Get By by Harry James, Dick Haymes

There are so many Harry James songs I associate with these two, but I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You) just makes too much sense to follow them as they leave as newlyweds. Til the end of the line.

First Dance There, I've Said It Again by Vaughn Monroe

Their first dance as a married couple could go any number of ways, but I wanted to find a song they would've heard as young men and maybe look back on it fondly. This one came out in February of 1945 and was number one on Billboard's National Radio Airplay right up until Bucky fell from a train in the Alps, so it might've been popular enough to be one of the last songs he heard before his presumed death.

Hora Od Yishama by Schlomo Carlebach

I'm gonna be honest with you, I just wanted any song for the hora that wasn't Hava Nagila, only because it's so over done (and a good hora is like a bajillion songs long, so they'll probably still have Hava Nagila in there somewhere, lol). Anyway, I am picturing their friends trying to lift these two massive super soldiers on chairs while dancing and Tony's gotta be in the suit just to make it happen and Thor has no idea what's going on but he's got the spirit and I'm giggling.

Last Dance Francesca by Hozier

The final dance of the night couldn't be anything else in my mind. I wanted something modern, to reflect them moving into the future, but still calling back to their origins and everything they've been through to find each other again. This song is a perfect fit.

i went grocery shopping tonight and was proud of myself for that because i never remember to do this basic human thing and then i simply… photosynthesize??? in front of my empty refrigerator/pantry. it’s v bad. the executive dysfunction is off the charts when it comes to meeting my sim needs.

anyways, i’m an absolute fucking melon because i forgot that pesach begins tomorrow……. virtually none of the very delicious things i bought as a treat™️ are kosher for pesach so i uhhhhhhhh guess i’ll just stare wistfully at them for the next 8 days??
