It does kinda bug me how every time there's some kind of media competition poll going around, I invariably just have to wind up blocking the poll account for my own peace of mind because the amount of vitriol towards OFMD in those things is just WILD. You will see the most absurdly bad-faith takes on those things, even beyond people complaining about cringe fandom on the cringe fandom website.

And it's really just...sad, because I do think a lot of the time it's symptomatic of how stories like OFMD have to try SO much harder and still get met with so much more scrutiny. OFMD is a thoughtful, well-written, excellent show, that exists specifically because there's a beautiful gay love story they wanted to tell, and I just can't believe that it would be so heavily hated over here if it doesn't revel so much in being queer. For all people on tumblr like to talk about being The Queer Website, it's undeniable to me that there's often this feeling that queerbaiting and non-canon ships and chracters whose sexuality is played as a joke are somehow better than imperfect but earnest actual queer rep. Add on how creators of color are held to a higher standard (I mean, just look at Taika Waititi - the guy's only crimes are being a brown Jewish man who dared to become successful and doesn't play into the sort of performative activism that people on here love), and it's really quite telling.

In short: they can't even appreciate the whimsy 🙄

Series/webtoons if you like Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss

Lovely hell

I'll start right away with the probably least known AND best of all - at least in terms of being similar to the universe of HH and HB-.

"Tanz, a powerful creature of pure evil, is vanished to Earth agaist her will. Weak and without a plan, she'll have to rely to Cain, a human, to guide her throught the world and figure a way back to her home: Hell."

First of all, it's a webtoon, so you can read it for free on Webtoon! Created by Tita (stage name Lorsupp), the story takes place in the present day. our protagonists are biblical characters (I won't give spoilers about who Tanz is. Cain, you guys must have already understood...).

This webtoon deserves much more recognition! the story is organic and well-paced, funny and tense when necessary. The characters are super charismatic and have chemistry, the Lore of Hell is super interesting and with a different approach from HH/HB. I love the character design - you can see the evolution of the author's traits as the chapters go by.

It's great to see other ways of approaching well-known characters -like the Jewish/Christian angels and demons-. A emphasis for Gabriel, ahhh this character hahah Anyway, this webtoon is the one I most recommend!

Vilanius

This series - with just a few episodes left - is a Mexican animation released for Cartoon Network. Compared to HH's type of humor, here it is much more toned down, as it is aimed at a younger audience.

"Villainous is the story of Black Hat Org., run by Black Hat (whose name is synonymous with villain, a reference to the evil black-hatted cowboys of Western films) and his team of three less evil sidekicks. Black Hat is trying to sell various evil inventions created by Dr. Flug and is desperate to fulfill his evil aspirations. However, things often end badly for him, as brilliant innovations tend to have small and often comical flaws."

The lore has nothing related to the Hell, but it still focuses on the evil side of the story. I love the character designs, very similar to HH. It's worth checking out, even more Latin animation!

The Good Place

A series already consolidated and finished. One of my favorites on Netflix!

Even though it's not exactly Heaven and Hell, the concept is very similar. but what stands out here is the philosophical debate about what is right and wrong, how to be a good person in a world marked by individualism, competition and exploitation so that a person can have the basics to survive? -neoliberalism cough cough-.

"Eleanor Shellstrop wakes up to discover that she has died and entered the afterlife. But when she is told by her mentor Michael that she is in the "Good Place" because of her good deeds, helping to get innocent people off death row, she realizes that a mistake has been made because the people They think she is someone else with the same name."

Question about existentialism, ethics and the meaning of life debated in a fun way! A quick comparison to Bojack Horseman, a series that I love. in The Good Place, the existentialism, life and death are treated in a much more optimistic and... beautiful way, while in Bojack it is pessimistic and heavy. the debates on human existence can have lighter conclusions - this is not a criticism of Bojack, just a different approach.

Guardians of the Mansion of Horror

This recommendation won't have a personal review because... I still need to watch it! but I saw so many people recommending it, saying that it has good LGBT+ representation that I thought it would be interesting to bring it here. If anyone has already watched it and wants to say something about it...

"Guardians of the Mansion of Horror follows friends Barney and Norma as they work at a theme park during the summer. The two take the night shift and are responsible for organizing the place while it is empty. What they didn't expect is that this fun place is actually an interdimensional portal to hell. Suddenly, several supernatural creatures appear to haunt the Earth and the two friends must join forces to stop them. To do this, they receive help from the talking dog, Pugsley."

Inside Job

Here we have the biggest injustice in the history of Netflix, the cancellation of this series! I brought it here because of their type of acidic and critical humor towards society - not that this criticism is present in HH-. An adult animation, with swear words and the same irreverent touch as HH, following the shadow side of society.

"A dysfunctional team working in a hidden government department is tasked with keeping conspiracies around the secret world. From complicated attacks to secret societies, anti-social technology genius Reagan Ridley will need to work in a place full of shapeshifting reptilians and psychic mushrooms, at the same time as she must deal with an unbalanced father, in order to achieve the dream she dreams of. promotion."

Emphasis to the animation itself and the character design. When it comes to other species, we have unique designs, they even resemble the design of demons in HH.

Good Omens

It's almost a rule, if you watched Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss, you also watched Good Omens!

For those who have never given the series a chance, here are some reasons to watch it now: Inspired by Neil Gaiman's work - and approved by him! -!. It is focused entirely on this universe of Jewish/Christian characters - and it is possible to see how well they are studied! There are references that only those who have studied demology or the sacred writings of these religions will understand-

The first season has a wonderful rhythm with captivating characters - the second lacks this a little. The angel and devil couple are super charismatic and you root for them.

Watching some of the biblical events from the point of view of the questioning and sinister demon Crowley and the good lamb Aziraphale is wonderful!

The votes are in, and we have a winner for the 2023 Nice Jewish Character Showdown! Let's go through the results together (and make sure you read the whole post! There's some important stuff at the bottom):

Sorry CecilSweep fans! The mysterious narrator of Welcome to Night Vale placed third this year. Of note: he was the highest ranking textually canon Jewish character for 2023, and was personally responsible for eliminating Data (TNG) and The Addams Family, amongst others.

The somewhat unexpected juggernaut of the 2023 competition, Kermit the Frog was the highest scoring of the original competitors. He seemed unstoppable through the competition, knocking out plenty of crowd favorites, including George Costanza and Rebecca Bunch.

Making a return in our redemption round, the two time competitor and 2023 champion of the Nice Jewish Character Showdown is Spock, from Star Trek! After being defeated last year by Peter Parker in the semifinals, he was able to earn a spot in 2023 by beating Fran Fine, Steven Universe, and Rebecca Bunch directly. Oh, and here's the interview that quote is from!

Thank you to everyone who voted in the competition this year, and stay tuned, because this is an annual event! This competition WILL run again in 2024, and (while I'm making no promises), some characters will be eligible for re-nomination. I'll let you know when the bracket is being made. Another long ask incoming

So this Variety Article explains the love triangle dynamic really well by the screenwriter himself Justin Kuritzkes. While reading it, I really enjoyed the part where he touches on the fact that Tashi comes from a completely different background than Patrick and Art.

So for somebody from Tashi’s background to enter into the sport means something entirely different than it does for these two guys who grew up in tennis boarding school, whose parents sent them off to go be raised on a tennis court somewhere. It’s a really different relationship they all have to the sport. Not just what the sport means to them, but the precarity of their position in the sport to begin with. So much of Tashi’s drive and ambition is informed by that; so much of Patrick’s entitlement is informed by that; so much of what drives her crazy about him has everything to do with that. And so much of what they find alluring about her has everything to do with that. It’s all part of it.

I can only understand Tashi's feelings even more deeply being a Black woman in a super rich sport (paraphrasing from the article that said it was always the intention that - She was always a Black woman. Art and Patrick were always white boys. Patrick was always a very well-to-do Jewish guy, and Art was always a somewhat well-to-do WASP.

Earlier in the movie the boys discuss Tashi having a foundation for at risk girls and she's not only doing a sport she dearly loves, she's also trying to further the next batch of players already at her young age cuz even though it's unsaid or clearly stated, Tashi is a role model so her career tanking after that injury weighs a lot heavier compared to her more privileged peers. It's why she lives through Art who has the ability to do what she lost prematurely so many years priors. In that way she is the same as Art, who lost something prematurely all those years ago, his best friend Patrick who made playing tennis fun. It's an inverse of their relationship to tennis, Tashi seeing the sport as her passion and anything relating to it (hence her white boys) furthers that passion compared to Art only showing ambition again once playing against Patrick, the only coach to truly fire him up.

Then we have Patrick. He's a perfect mix of Tashi and Art (well they're all perfect mixes of each other tbh). Patrick is ready to go pro initially and can't get behind going to college like Tashi and Art do. Patrick wants to start playing tennis and isn't afraid to jump in, not wanting to stall his momentum. Of course, its a short lived career since he's living in his car if he can't crash at a online hookup date's place. He lost his girl and his boy, and we know he misses them because strangely Patrick is the most vulnerable about it, accepting all of his attractions, the beautiful and ugly traits. Tashi is another version of the age old saying "I would've gone pro if it wasn't for my *insert childhood/teenage injury*" while Art traded Patrick as a coach for Tashi and is seeing that her coaching isn't enough since he was willing to quit playing tennis until Patrick gave him the real push he needed.

The codependency is real b/n all three. Tashi is needed for Patrick and Art to explore more romantic/sexual feelings toward each other. Patrick is needed as he is the best rival for Tashi (in differing ideals) and Art (competitive mostly on the court). Art is needed to stir the pot b/n Tashi and Patrick lol but he's also there to show the softer sides of Tashi and Patrick --- Tashi cradling Art in her lap, Patrick feeding him a churro, both of them letting Art spit gum into their palms, both wanting Art to reignite his passion for tennis on their clashing terms). When college Tashi and Patrick are together, they're even competing when in the bed as Patrick asks about Art, even when Art's not in the room, his presence is felt as the unseen third in their dynamic, and in a role reversal later on in the film, it's Patrick who is the missing piece to Art and Tashi's relationship.

Also, how do you feel about Tashi's kid actually being conceived through her affair with Patrick, making her not Art's child, cuz if that's the case then that scene where the daughter and Art are sleeping cozily together is sooooo ugh emotions are felt!!!

Firstly, your take??? Chef’s kiss 10/10 stars would eat again. The codependency is the movie. They’re literally addicts chasing a high that only they could give each other it’s insane !!

Also I feel like a lot of resentment comes from their differing privileges. Like Tashi never had the privilege of “choosing to retire” or to not have a back up plan (and not go to college). But still she has to live through these two entitled white boys who don’t understand the depth of her love for the sport (until later i think cuz they realize how far she’s willing to go to play some real fucking tennis)

No marvel or dc bc they are as a whole too popular for this, as much as they are canonical jews and love that for them. odds are TOO HIGH of them sweeping and i want them not in there

They have to either be a character niche in their own property, make you go "oh THEYRE Jewish????" as in if you only saw small early on snippets you wouldnt know aka its not something talked abt a lot and you find out and it makes you go "OH????", OR they have to be from a niche property themselves

Only submit a character once! Please no cheating, I am going to do my best to include as many as I can

I've been following the @tanakhsexyman competition and I feel like everyone is overlooking the angel that wrestled with Jacob. This is objectively the sexiest entity in the tanakh, and because I am who I am I will shout about it into the void in hopes of converting others to my cause (probably incoherently, I wrote this at 1am and am to lazy to edit the draft).

Let's start with the surface level. The word used for "angel" here can also be translated as "messenger", so it's possible that this was not an angel but a human man on a mission from G-d. Either way, we know that this 'angel' appeared to Jacob as a man, strong and graceful and shining with an undeniable aura of the Holy One.

Hot.

But there are a bunch of hot guys in the tanakh. What makes this angel Sexyman Supreme?

Upon fighting the angel, Jacob is cemented as the origin point for the nation that would become the Jewish people. He is given the name Israel, meaning "wrestled with G-d." The angel in this instance is a stand in for G-d. It is the challenge faced by our forefathers, made physical. G-d had contended with others at that point– Adam and Noah and Abraham and Isaac– but in this moment G-d decided to give his follower the chance to fight back, and so every challenge thus far was concentrated down into a beefy man that Jacob could grab and grapple and pin to the earth.

The angel, in turn, has great strength: even a tap to the leg dislocates Jacob's hip. And yet it knows it is not supposed to win, so it restrains itself, allowing Jacob to unleash his fears and frustration until he reaches a point where he can hold G-d (or the closest approximation) in his arms and take the Holy One's blessing from it. And then the angel rights itself, changes the fate of a nation, and walks off into the dawn with Israel calling out after it.

Additionally, the entire structure of the “safe space” generation of schooling was constructed in bad faith. Much like DEI and other race-essentialist competitions, no one was ever in danger from “Zionists” (read: Jews) on campus. The whole production had one specific goal, which anti-Zionist groups are finally elucidating in clear terms. Last week, an imam headlining a Zoom teach-in hosted by Columbia’s Students for Justice in Palestine said this about Jewish professor Shai Davidai, who has been hounded for his criticism of genocidal anti-Semitism:

“If there’s one professor, like that Shai Davidai guy, how do we get him in trouble? What are the ways in which his professorship is sort of tenuous, or maybe in jeopardy, or at what point will it be in jeopardy? How do we create a situation in which he’s in jeopardy? In a particular situation that might have more impact and it might silence—this is what the Zionists do—that might silence 100 other professors. If you’re able to take out somebody like that, and make an example of them, it might shut up 100 more…. What’s our biggest threat here? What’s our biggest opportunity? Which domino, if we knock it over, is going to knock 20 dominoes over?”

What too many administrators, journalists, and even groups like FIRE never understood (or never wanted to admit) was that if the anti-Israel movement on campus had one single ethos, it was: “How do we create a situation in which he’s in jeopardy?”

Free speech was always at the center of it, but just not the way it has been portrayed. The goal was to eliminate Jewish students’ freedom of speech (and, eventually, of association, and even of movement) on campus. The speech of Anti-Zionists was not in danger—though they were occasionally told not to take hostages in university buildings and not to set up Jew-free zones on campus. What they were protecting was their ability to silence others.

A school like Columbia, where a pro-Hamas student group holds events explicitly designed to extinguish basic civil rights on campus, is in more trouble than schools like Vanderbilt (and University of Chicago, Purdue, and others), because its students have no need to even hide the ball anymore. The institution has already been converted from a university into a theater of political warfare.

I saw what seemed like some very reasonable critiques of that new blonde lady /rabbi romance show saying it falls into a common trope of men from a minority culture falling in love w some blonde goddess and all the women around him being evil dark harpies who are jealous and want him to be for them and the creator wrote a reply acting clueless and being like “how can a show about a cool rabbi who smokes weed have stereotypes or be antisemitic?”

But then reveals in the interview that in her real life she was the blonde girl who married the Jewish guy and converted lmaooooo

She even said the women in his life didn’t do that to her but that the show needed conflict like damn you rly said I will be throwing you under the bus

If I were a woman who actually had to live w what it’s like to be actually received as a Jewish woman in the world and this bitch did this I would rly want to form a posse and kick her ass

Like she clearly does hate Jewish women on some level and views them as gross competition holding the men back in her blonde goddess life

That being said I am going to limit it to 2-3 characters from one source

They do not have to be canonically Jewish, it can be up to your interpertation, headcanon, coding, etc! Just in the case I don't know know the character give me your personal reasoning, or let me know if its a headcanon or if its canon too just let me know then (bc i made it required on the form)

goyim can nominate If and ONLY IF: It's on behalf of another jewish person in their life and/or its canonical

Some characters that are for sure getting in are: The Baudelaires from ASOUE and The Pines Twins from Gravity Falls, so you do not need to nominate them

After watching the Eurovision final I can say that Croatia was robbed! They should have won. Switzerland didn’t deserve that win. I’m sorry but Nemo isn’t a great singer and that spinning disk they were standing on wasn’t that great. Also I don’t think that at a singing competition you should bully a 20 year old for being Jewish and from Israel. You may not like her government but damn it’s a singing competition put the politics aside.

One last thing, the Dutch guy was kicked out for threatening and hitting a female production worker. Instead of rightfully being angry that a woman was assaulted, you keep blaming Israel that literally has nothing to do with it. Your bullying didn’t help at all cause Israel is in the top 5 and wasn’t banned.
