Okay okay okay, this has given me thoughts.

I do feel antipathy on how Utena treats Wakaba. WAKABA DESERVED BETTER. She pours so much love into Utena, and Utena repeatedly blows her off. And that SUCKS.

But it's an interesting exercise in how putting someone on a pedestal also puts a wall up between two people. The person being idolized or having adoration poured into them may not be able to articulate it, but on some level they can sense it.

When you're on a pedestal, you know you aren't being seen as your full self. Everyone is flawed. And maybe someone really does! Wakaba's black rose arc suggests she isn't totally blind to Utena's flaws. But it's very likely going to feel that way to Utena. There is also just something uncomfortable on standing on uneven ground, even if you have the high ground.

Which I suspect is also sort of what's going on with Shirori and Juri, but I need to spend more time with that thought.

By the last screencaps here, Utena and Anthy have seen each other at their best and at their worst. They may idealize each other in some ways, but it's in full light of the ways they can't actually live up to every potential they may have for each other. And that's okay. They can and will fulfill some of that potential, and that's all we can really ask of those we have relationships with. And it lends them equal ground.

I think this is often something we see with parasocial relationships. Not only is there a difference in what people know about each other, but it's hard to feel close to people one might interact with fleetingly, not have the time to interact more, and during those interactions, to feel something of a glorified icon in front of. And yes, I mean icon in the sense of worship here.

I think the thing that's tragic to me in all this is that Utena doesn't deserve Wakaba's pedestal. Wakaba is smart and wise and kind and good. I'll put Wakaba on my pedestal =P

the fact that the onion prince said 'the times wakaba seems happiest is when she's with you' to utena and utena looks at anthy and then in the finale utena says the line to anthy. if i was wakaba i would also go to violent therapy

The Senshi Paint Along With Bob Ross

Usagi: Usagi loves everything about Bob Ross; his positivity, his gentle demeanor, his voice, everything. Sure, she doesn't exactly make the best painting (she's not really good at it) but she's actually pretty satisfied by the results.

Ami: Ami appreciates the show, but really doesn't have much desire to actually paint along with Bob. She likes to listen and watch the other Senshi paint, as she finds Bob's voice relaxing. Plus, it's useful practice for her English class.

Rei: Rei will paint a masterpiece, OR SOMEONE WILL DIE IN THE ATTEMPT. Rei watches the video over and over, constantly painting and repainting over and over. There are moments when Rei just screams 'HOW DOES HE DO THAT?!' before storming off, but she always comes back.

Mako: Mako isn't much for painting, but proves to be surprisingly good at it. She falters every so often and tends to be a bit heavy-handed with the brush or the palette knife, but she is nothing if determined. Her results are quite good.

Mina: Mina mostly does this whole painting thing as a way to tease Rei. She quickly picks up on a lot of Bob's little catchphrases and uses them to perpetually needle Rei. Any mention of 'Happy Little Trees' is usually followed by Mako trying to wrestle the palette knife out of Rei's grip before she stabs Mina.

Haruka: Haruka tries this out as a way to impress Michiru. She takes it very seriously and tries her hardest to mimic Bob's actions on screen, but doesn't always get it right. Michiru appreciates the effort and hangs Haruka's pieces up like a mother hangs up her child's drawings.

Michiru: Michiru is mostly here for Haruka. While she appreciates the technical aspects of Bob's work, she finds it just a bit too pedestrian for her tastes. She rarely follows along with the video, preferring to paint in her own style along with the others. Rei finds it infuriating.

Setsuna: Setsuna cheats. Hey, she has to do SOMETHING while she's at the Gate of Time. She tries to help the others while they work but ends up just getting ignored. Except by Rei. Rei finds her skills even more infuriating than Michiru.

Chibiusa: Chibs likes Bob Ross, and likes to paint alongside Usagi, though they often get super competitive. She often gets frustrated whenever Usagi (against all odds and logic) pulls something off that she can’t, but Hotaru usually reigns her in.

Hotaru: Hotaru is unused to really being creative, so this is a nice change of pace for her. She usually has to stick between Usagi and Chibiusa though, and usually ends up a bit paint-splattered as a result.

JETTY IS SLEEPING WORKING POST FRIENDAVERSARY GIFTS.

@elleskinner-justart did this commission for me, for Jetty’s friendaversary gift! It is four of her favorite friendships: Xena and Gabrielle, Kitty and Seth, Rei and Usagi, Pharah and Tracer, and in the center, us! Elle did such a good job capturing not only the literal physical qualities but also the essence of each pairing and I love this just SO goddamn much. The little splash coming out of Tracer’s mug! Seth’s grumbling frown! Jetty’s horror as I drag  her on yet another adventure!

I am getting this put on a mug for her little tea station at work, but also a desk mat because why not.

[big spoils] I always kind of wonder when I watch Tutu why they play the memory game in the first episode wirh Ahiru and do the is she/isn't she a duck to not keep it a secret or a question in that same way beyond a single episode. But from the POV of Tutu as a story about breaking out of the roles the stories we're raised with teach us to embody, I think we can sometimes quite literally forget who we were before we tried to be the part.

Each of our main characters have a version of this. Fakir thinks of himself as the reincarnation, believing there's a whole life he doesn't know but must live up to, so he consciously gives up himself. Rue gives up her memories as part of a plot to play her role, but I feel she does it more to escape it so when it comes back she feels it's inevitable, her destiny. Her role is villain but she dreams of being the princess (or so how she conceprualizes it when really it's not even so much princess as worthy of love and loved). And the whole plot revolves around bringing Mytho back to himself, who seems to often have no awareness of what he gave up. And sure when the story ends he is still prince but in his world prince means to love all equally (he gave up his heart to save the world instead of keep it and risk it for love of himself or another afterall) but what he chooses to do moving forward is not what was scripted to him.

So it does actually feel like a nod to 'the players of this story have an idea of who they are but things may not be so clear' played out literally by Ahiru in the first episode as she tries to figure out what is dream, what is real, and what that which is real says about her. I love that that answer is not one thing is dream, one part is identity, but all mushed together. She is a duck that is a girl who is destined to play the role of the tragic princess but also a quirky person just wanting to make the world a little better for those she cares about.

youre the only person i know up to date on crtical role so... did something happen?? ive been seeing a bunch of drama recently

The show had their first character death in campaign 2. The drama (that I’ve stayed out of, so I might’ve missed a few things) seems to be a clash of how everyone is dealing with their grief, for good and bad. Lots of back and forth about how this should be as a show vs a game, people who were just really really attached to the character and are having a rough time dealing with how quick the whole thing was… It’s all over the place, as something this emotional usually is. A lot of stuff has been aimed at the cast too, from the bits I see on twitter.

Death is hard in all forms and I hope everyone finds a way to take care of themselves.
