Go on a terrifying journey with me called, "we're dyeing a wool sweater"

The beginning:

This is a cashmere sweater probably from the early 80s. I bought it for 29 dollars, and with any luck at all it's not gonna be this color by the time I'm done with it.

It's missing a button, but i want to put different buttons on it anyhow. Actually, I have no fucking idea how they managed to lose the button given how insanely difficult it was for me to get the little fuckers off. I saved them, though: never get rid of a good vintage button.

This is the dye I'm using, a professional acid dye:

Washed it off with synthrapol, and measured out the dye! We're now SLOWLY taking it up to just below boiling: wool is very finicky to dye. It LONGS to become felt

The Senshi Paint Along With Bob Ross

Usagi: Usagi loves everything about Bob Ross; his positivity, his gentle demeanor, his voice, everything. Sure, she doesn't exactly make the best painting (she's not really good at it) but she's actually pretty satisfied by the results.

Ami: Ami appreciates the show, but really doesn't have much desire to actually paint along with Bob. She likes to listen and watch the other Senshi paint, as she finds Bob's voice relaxing. Plus, it's useful practice for her English class.

Rei: Rei will paint a masterpiece, OR SOMEONE WILL DIE IN THE ATTEMPT. Rei watches the video over and over, constantly painting and repainting over and over. There are moments when Rei just screams 'HOW DOES HE DO THAT?!' before storming off, but she always comes back.

Mako: Mako isn't much for painting, but proves to be surprisingly good at it. She falters every so often and tends to be a bit heavy-handed with the brush or the palette knife, but she is nothing if determined. Her results are quite good.

Mina: Mina mostly does this whole painting thing as a way to tease Rei. She quickly picks up on a lot of Bob's little catchphrases and uses them to perpetually needle Rei. Any mention of 'Happy Little Trees' is usually followed by Mako trying to wrestle the palette knife out of Rei's grip before she stabs Mina.

Haruka: Haruka tries this out as a way to impress Michiru. She takes it very seriously and tries her hardest to mimic Bob's actions on screen, but doesn't always get it right. Michiru appreciates the effort and hangs Haruka's pieces up like a mother hangs up her child's drawings.

Michiru: Michiru is mostly here for Haruka. While she appreciates the technical aspects of Bob's work, she finds it just a bit too pedestrian for her tastes. She rarely follows along with the video, preferring to paint in her own style along with the others. Rei finds it infuriating.

Setsuna: Setsuna cheats. Hey, she has to do SOMETHING while she's at the Gate of Time. She tries to help the others while they work but ends up just getting ignored. Except by Rei. Rei finds her skills even more infuriating than Michiru.

Chibiusa: Chibs likes Bob Ross, and likes to paint alongside Usagi, though they often get super competitive. She often gets frustrated whenever Usagi (against all odds and logic) pulls something off that she can’t, but Hotaru usually reigns her in.

Hotaru: Hotaru is unused to really being creative, so this is a nice change of pace for her. She usually has to stick between Usagi and Chibiusa though, and usually ends up a bit paint-splattered as a result.

I don't think I've every really thought about the fact that we move from the series title card to these shots of Utena and Anthy first where they close the series, and second with a hint toward their role throughout the series. This show just bashes us on the head with foreshadowing but is entirely uninterested in making sure we know that it's doing the foreshadow thing. It's actually rather delightful, because you can be on your fourth or fifth watch through and notice that we're introducing them separately where they end.

Okay okay okay, this has given me thoughts.

I do feel antipathy on how Utena treats Wakaba. WAKABA DESERVED BETTER. She pours so much love into Utena, and Utena repeatedly blows her off. And that SUCKS.

But it's an interesting exercise in how putting someone on a pedestal also puts a wall up between two people. The person being idolized or having adoration poured into them may not be able to articulate it, but on some level they can sense it.

When you're on a pedestal, you know you aren't being seen as your full self. Everyone is flawed. And maybe someone really does! Wakaba's black rose arc suggests she isn't totally blind to Utena's flaws. But it's very likely going to feel that way to Utena. There is also just something uncomfortable on standing on uneven ground, even if you have the high ground.

Which I suspect is also sort of what's going on with Shirori and Juri, but I need to spend more time with that thought.

By the last screencaps here, Utena and Anthy have seen each other at their best and at their worst. They may idealize each other in some ways, but it's in full light of the ways they can't actually live up to every potential they may have for each other. And that's okay. They can and will fulfill some of that potential, and that's all we can really ask of those we have relationships with. And it lends them equal ground.

I think this is often something we see with parasocial relationships. Not only is there a difference in what people know about each other, but it's hard to feel close to people one might interact with fleetingly, not have the time to interact more, and during those interactions, to feel something of a glorified icon in front of. And yes, I mean icon in the sense of worship here.

I think the thing that's tragic to me in all this is that Utena doesn't deserve Wakaba's pedestal. Wakaba is smart and wise and kind and good. I'll put Wakaba on my pedestal =P

the fact that the onion prince said 'the times wakaba seems happiest is when she's with you' to utena and utena looks at anthy and then in the finale utena says the line to anthy. if i was wakaba i would also go to violent therapy

It involves going to the paramount theater, getting me decent tickets to something, and sending them to me. I will obviously pay for the tickets as well as delivery.

I understand this is a somewhat-difficult ask, hence the bounty on it.

Another fun little thing going on here is that since I'm of the mind that Utena has already started to feel attraction for Anthy, they are talking about each others' crushes here. And both have reason to think unfavorably of the other as a result of their jealousy. Wakaba calls Anthy weird, and in her defense she really is, but it's a bad kind of weird where Utena's is a good kind because Wakaba is jealous of her and Saionji. Utena, of coures, just saw how Saionji treats women and should, in my opinion XD be more concerned for Wakaba here.

It also strikes me that Wakaba introduces Anthy as 'weird' to a girl who sticks out like a sore thumb in her own school. So she's not the only weird one around. It's might be a thin early tether, but I think this sort of thing could easily evoke that for Utena. Of course, the strange thing is that all the things Wakaba cites Anthy as being weird for, are things Utena later encourages Anthy to change about herself (being a loner and keeping to herself). Very interesting yes yes. I'm just now making note of that and not sure where I'll take it later, but it's absolutely worth noting imo.
