Bahaghari on Facebook: Pura Luka Vega's rearrest highlights LGBTQI's non-enjoyment of freedom of expression and artistic freedom
After months of being released on bail, drag artist Pura Luka Vega has been arrested again, this time by a different court but with the same complaint.
Bahaghari once again condemns the weaponization of the law against Pura and their right to freely express their relationship with faith through art. Evangelical groups have allotted resources to further marginalize an LGBTQI+ person in the court of law. Similarly, many city councils across the Philippines have declared them "persona non grata," following a viral video where they, dressed as Jesus Christ, performed Ama Namin remix in a bar.
It has not gone unnoticed to Bahaghari the double standards at play in this case. Pastor Apollo Quiboloy of the mega-church Kingdom of Jesus Christ was indicted by FBI for alleged crimes against women and children but none of the city councils who have declared Pura "persona non grata" are mum on this issue. Until now, Quiboloy is in hiding even with summons from the Senate in their investigation on the abuse allegations against him. Furthermore, the complainants for the case are all affiliated with the Philippines for Jesus Movement (PJM) founded by Eddie Villanueva, the father of Senator Joel Villanueva, whose office has deployed disgusting tactics to delay the SOGIESC Equality Bill.
The art of drag and other similar acts of expression by LGBTQI+ people are under attack around the world. In the United States, legislations have been passed to criminalize people based on gender identity and expression. In the Philippines where a national anti-discrimination law is absent, LGBTQI+ individuals are subject to gender-based violence.
Pura Luka Vega's case is an attack on LGBTQI+ people's expression on their relationship with faith and religion and the expression of their artistic freedom. LGBTQI+ individuals have different expressions on their faith. Many are still practicing their religion. Some have abandoned it altogether due to the trauma and marginalization they felt in the presence of their religious leaders.

Jesus V. Merritt (October 15, 1913 - ?) was born in Agoo, Philippines. He was the son of Julius Merritt, an Army veteran of the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) who as an expatriate worked as a physician and the former Timotea Villanueva, the sister of a prominent politician. He studied at the National University and was awarded a BA at the University of Santo Tomas.
He found success as a journalist. He was the editor of his college newspaper and contributed writings to the Ilocano provincial press. He published an article in the Philippines Free Press fittingly titled “A Newspaper Man Without Newspaper.”
His career as a journalist was interrupted during WWII when the Japanese military conquered the Philippines. He was forced to endure inhumane treatment in the Santo Tomas internment camp. As a correspondent for the Pittsburgh Courier the Baltimore Afro-American wrote about the daring exploits of his brother and the often violent confrontations between Black and white Americans.
He took a position in the government as a Congressional Press Relations Officer. He returned to newspaper writing at the Manila Chronicle as a political reporter but served in government as Quezon City councilor, after which he was appointed by President Ramon Magsaysay as Assistant General Manager of a housing corporation. He served as Public Relations Officer of the Budget Commission. He was an astute businessman who owned a long stretch of beachfront property in Agoo comprised of 30 hectares.
He is remembered as the author of several books on Filipino political history and Asian affairs, among them Our Appeals to the U.S. Congress, Magsaysay, Man of the People, Our Presidents: Profiles in History, Free Asia and Its Leaders, and Our Country and My Own: Statistical Profiles of Nations.
As the president of Merriville Realty and Housing Corporation, he won a legal case that resulted in the disbarment of his former attorney. His son, Mario C. Merritt, resides in the Philippines, and his grandson, Gloman Merritt, is an entrepreneur. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Day 8 in Cuba
Tumblr media
We have just come off and incredible weekend, and it is day 8 of the mission trip in Cuba.  Thank you to all who have been praying for this trip, the mission team and the impact it will have on those we serve.  Please don’t stop praying.
Last week Alex and I served with a mission team in the mountains of southern Cuba.  There were several challenges, but God gave us safety, provision and opportunity to serve some of the sweetest people I have ever met.  No running water… sporadic electricity generated by a small, logo dammed up river, no transportation other than animals, limited food sources and more.  These people love the Lord and sharing their faith with others.
Over the weekend we made our way back to Havana.  On Friday our vehicle broke down leaving us on the side of the road for several hours.  We then boarded a bus and rode 14 hours.  We arrived safely and even got some rest.
Sunday was so, so good.  We visited two partner churches.  In the morning we were with one church that was celebrating their 25th anniversary.  It was off the chain and great.  Love these people of Ebenezer Church many of whom are part of the sports ministry.  In the evening we visited Pastor Vladimir’s Villanueva Church deep in Havana that was also good.
The week ahead not only will bring some opportunities to connect with friends and possible new partners to see sports ministry increase as well as the other ways we can serve.  We will also be part of a pickle ball camp where I hope to learn how to play.  That is yet to be seen.
Before I leave you, I’d like to share a little of something God gave me this morning.  It is a few verses that stuck out and reminded me that God has called us to be light in the darkness.  It is my desire to stay even when there is a struggle, to share even when it is hard and to be strong in the Lord.
It’s the responsibility of the church of Jesus Christ to shine His light and not to embrace the darkness. He still changes us so we can be part of changing the world. Stay in the struggle. Kick out the darkness. Let His light shine through you.
Isaiah 9:2 CSB
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness.”
Isaiah 60:2 CSB
“For look, darkness will cover the earth, and total darkness the peoples; but the Lord will shine over you, and his glory will appear over you.”
Isaiah 60:22 CSB
“The least will become a thousand, the smallest a mighty nation. I am the Lord; I will accomplish it quickly in its time.”
Have a great week.   Thank you for your prayers.  Let me know how I can pray for you.  The e-devotions will come to you only a few times this week while I am still serving in Cuba.

i just wanna say that it’s really telling that so many people thought mateo from jane the virgin was a brat before his diagnosis episode. like i saw a weird amount of people that blamed his meltdowns/outbursts on jane’s parenting or just outright thought he was annoying when all of those things are TEXTBOOK adhd signs. kids don’t have meltdowns over “nothing” like that, like even if he didn’t have adhd this boy has SO much trauma in his life at such a young age!! and kids who are maybe rude to other kids but immediately regret it or don’t seem to have impulse control are almost always kids with some shit goin down in their brains. matteo has all the signs of adhd since literally the first episode where he’s been aged up, where he says his suit is uncomfortable/itchy and can’t focus on getting ready. and the fact that people (in the fandom and in the show, but I’m talking about in the fandom) saw this very clearly adhd kid and went “ah! annoying and bratty!” tells us that (a) ableism is so permeated into every aspect of our lives and (b) some people literally have no empathy for children and just see them as inconveniences unless they’re totally submissive and i hate all of it

Quote
I unite my testimony with those of many other Saints that God is our loving Heavenly Father. I have felt His infinite love during my dark days. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, understands our pains and our afflictions. He wants to ease our burdens and comfort us. We must follow His example by serving and ministering to those with even greater burdens than our own.
