They Think Empathy Is A Sin Because They Worship Satan, Literally, Not Metaphorically: an esay.
OK so. I am going to do something inadvisable and make a lengthy post about something other than game design, because I can and I want to.
It's a long one. Like, extremely long. So, to avoid "Do you like the colour of the sky [gone quaker, gone tolstoy, christian anarchist edition]", here's a convenient break so you can scroll past if lengthy religious diatribes aren't your thing.
To begin with, some baselines. I am writing from a Christian perspective. More specifically, I would describe myself as a Liberal Quaker. To me, at least, this involves Christianity as a communal mystical practice, with unprogrammed worship (IE no clergy) and an entirely flat religious heirarchy. Values associated with this branch of religion include honesty, charity, humility and peace.
I adopted Quakerism as a religious framework because it was the one that worked for me. I was raised in, and still live in, a culturally Christian society; as such, Christianity provided a religious framework of symbols and meanings that I was culturally fluent with, whereas other faiths would have required a steeper learning curve since I lack that baseline familiarity. That said, I try to study and understand other religions: I would say that what I've learned of Islam and Budhism - while I'm far from an expert - have been valuable to me.
Politically, I lean hard to the left and hard towards anarchy/libertarianism. I would describe my politics as antifascist first, and then largely anarcho-communist after that, but I'm a pretty big-tent progressive. I'm also a british trans woman who keeps ending up voting Lib Dem for lack of better options, if that gives you any context.
Now, let's define some terms as I understand them and intend to use them. These are all metaphors or symbols, that we can use poetically to better articulate certain ideas. I use Christian imagery here, because that's what I'm fluent with; if I was instead fluent with Jewish or Daoist or some other religious culture, I'd be expressing my ideas with those symbols instead. So.
God: A manifestation/personification/symbol of absolute perfect goodness. God is Love. That is God is absolute unconditional love for all of creation.
Jesus/Christ: Jesus is a representation of God's love for us humans taking tangible effect. Jesus is a sacrifice God made on our behalf to rescue us from Sin. Jesus is inspired by the historical figure Yeshua of Nazareth, a 1st-century Jewish religious thinker who was quite popular and then executed by the Roman occupation.
Sin/Original Sin: Sin is simple, it's when we do bad things that hurt people. Since God loves all of us and doesn't want us hurt, God doesn't want us to Sin. Original sin is part of us; the fact that we are capable of Sinning simply because we're human.
Satan/The Devil: Satan is the force that urges us to Sin.
Heaven/Paradise: A state of goodness, where - since we have escaped sin and embraced God's wishes for us, we do not suffer.
Hell/Damnation: The state of rejecting God and personally embracing Sin, and therefore suffering.
When I talk about these things, I do not mean them in the literaly sense that a fundamentalist might. I do not believe that there is an actual literal guy called Satan who is red with stylish little horns and a goattee who spends all day tempting people and poking dead souls with a pitchfork.
Rather, these are social constructs. By way of analogy, gender and money are social constructs; they're concepts that have no inherent existence in a world that's ultimately just atoms and energy in a vacuum, but because we believe in them and lend them social weight, they gain power in our lives. In the same way the concepts of God, Satan, Sin, etc clearly effect the world. Saying 'Sin' isn't real is like saying your bank account isn't real; it has a tangible effect on the world, so it's useful to discuss it.
Does this mean that I think God, Sin, etc are just made up arbitrary symbols? No. I happen to believe in them. I happen to actively choose to believe in them, because I want to invest them with meaning in my life. This is why it's called 'faith' and not 'rational observation'. But even if they were purely arbitrary ideas, then I think that - like other purely arbitrary ideas such as 'human rights' and 'love' - they're worth believing in anyway.
Lastly, the Bible. I like the bible. It's an old historical text with some incredibly beautiful writing in it, that conveys some potent and meaningful messages. It is very obviously not an account of literal fact, but interpreted through a lens of metaphor or poetry it has a lot to teach. Not everything in it is perfect - it's a historical text that has been translated and retranslated repeatedly - but IMHO you can get a lot out of it, and its writers were, as a general rule, onto something.
You will notice that these ideas are wildly counter to the culturally conservative evangelical christian mainstream. They are, however, entirely unremarkable within the framework of liberal theology.
OK. These should be our base assumptions going in. Perhaps you disagree with them; if so, that's nice for you, but here I'm describing my worldview, not prescribing what yours should be.
It is perhaps notable that I've got this far in and only just finished defining my terms.
SO.
I have observed in the past that there are - effectively - two different, largely incompatible, religions both called Christianity. On the one hand, we have what I believe in, a belief structure that champions such virtues as mercy, forgiveness, peace and humility. On the other hand, we have the mainstream conservative evangelical christian right; this version of christianity values things like obedience, authority and (most of all) punishment.
These are fundamentally incompatible belief structures. As a stark illustration of this, consider what these two christianities want for wrongdoers. One branch wants them to repent, atone and be forgiven. The other wants them to be punished and suffer for their transgressions.
I am going to differentiate between these two beliefs. Because it's my essay and I'm on my side, I will call my beliefs Christianity, and the other side Christian Fascism.
I would argue that my values are more fundamental to the underlying message of Christianity (as derived from the teachings of that guy Yeshua I mentioned) than the other approach. In no particular order:
we have the parable of the prodigal son. Here, Yeshua teaches his followers that when somebody fucks up and then changes their mind, this is to be celebrated and they are to be welcomed back. The message of reconciliation and forgiveness is obvious.
we have the parable of the good samaritan. Again, the message is clear: we must seek to do right by even our enemies.
there are many other stories and teachings attributed to Yeshua with similar messages. Forgiveness and redemption are constant themes in his teachings. He praises the humble and the downtrodden consistently.
However, most importantly, we have the central facet of Christianity itself; the crucifixion. What happens here, and why?
God comes to earth as Jesus, and - after spreading his message described above - is publicly tortured to death in one of the most horrific execution methods available at the time. This sacrifice is made, knowingly, to absolve humanity of Sin. All of humanity. No exceptions. God loves us, He wants us to be forgiven when we sin, so he suffers and dies for us to offer us a way out.
It's right there. John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." God loves the entire world so much that He made this sacrifice, so that whoever wants it can be saved. No exceptions. Whoever you are, God loves you, and sent Jesus so you can be saved if you want it.
This is the single central pillar on which the entire rest of Christianity is built.
So, yes. The 'no true scotsman' argument gets used in discussions around Christianity, but in this instance I firmly believe that it is, in fact, possible to say that somebody is doing Christianity wrong, because the central message of Christianity stands for something (mercy, redemption, charity, etc) and when somebody acts in opposition to that, then whatever they are doing is not christian.
(an analogy: suppose somebody called themselves a communist, but in practice they voted for right-wing parties, assisted the owning-class over the class interests of the workers, espoused anti-communist rhetoric, and never did anything communist. They could claim all they want: the truth remains that they are failing to be a communist through their actual behaviour. likewise any other set of principles).
So. Christianity is not Christian Fascism. Christian Fascism is, instead, fascism wearing christianity as a disguise. They are not, meaningfully, christian, they just want you to think they are. They might believe it themselves, even.
Another example: terfs. Terfs are transphobic bigots who appropriate the name of feminism to advance their transphobic agendas. They want you to believe they're feminists. They might believe they're feminists themselves. But the things they say, and do, and seem to believe are profoundly unfeminist, and feminism as a movement has a duty to reject them. That terfs wear the mask of feminism doesn't discredit the actual feminist movement.
It's idealogical parasitism. Hollowing out one ideology and wearing its skin to advance the agenda of a different, opposing ideology.
Fascists do this a lot because the actual things they want are straightforwardly evil, and being evil on purpose tends not to be popular until you're, like, super indoctrinated, so they use appropriate the language of other movements as a trojan horse.
To my mind, there is a fairly simple litmus test for these things. There are two groups in the Bible that we are repeatedly, consistently, unequivocably told to treat well. One is Widows. The other is Refugees. These two groups were hilighted by the writers for a reason; they're vulnerable demographics with fewer social connections to support themselves, who can easily be neglected or actively victimised by a society that doesn't make an active choice to support them. When Yeshua says "Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me", they are 'the least of these'.
Luckily, widows are not in the modern day at the centre of a huge culture war. Refugees, however?
So. A good litmus test. How somebody believes we should treat refugees, and immigrants more broadly. The message of the Bible is consistently to help foreigners who come to your country, to provide for them and help them settle. Jesus doesn't make any exceptions about visas or 'legal immigration' or contributing to the economy. He tells you in no uncertain terms that you must help refugees, always, every time. If you disagree with that... you're not a Christian, you're a Fascist appropriating Christianity.
(There is a massive discussion that could go here about the bible's position on sexuality, queerness, divorce, etc etc. I cannot be bothered with all that. The christian-fascist reading of these verses tends to get the most visibility, because the translations of the bible with the most visibility leaned into these interpretations. there are other interpretations and other translations that don't have these problems. I could go into more detail, but I have better things to discuss. Two key points:
the bible was written in societies where the family was incredibly reliant - socially and economically - on the husband's support. If the husband casts aside his wife and family, or stops giving a shit about them, they're totally fucked. This is the same society where 'do not let widowed women starve if they no longer have a husband to support them' is reiterated constantly. So, many admonishments against adultery etc should be read in this light: your family rely on you, do not abandon them. Many other passages - eg sodom & gomorrough - are likewise condemnation of things like sexual abuse.
more importantly, remember, the central message of christianity is one of absolute universal love so powerful that Jesus personally sacrificed himself to save us. All of us. 'The world' that God loved includes the gays and the divorcees etc. That central message takes precedent over any edge-case reading you might find that suggests that God's love has exceptions.)
There is an asymetry in public discussions of christianity (and, I think, religion more broadly).
If you have a set of beliefs that value everybody's intrinsic worth, that values considers charity and mercy good, that tells you to embrace foreigners and outgroups more generally, you will tend to the left. You will tend to adopt other left-wing ideas alongside it. Among these are ideas like cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, etc. If you believe Jesus commands you to embrace foreigners, then you will do your best not to reject them or their practices, even if they practice a different religion to you. This is doubled when christianity is a culturally hegemonic force, and you wish to do right by the meek and the humble who are being oppressed (often by that hegemonic force of christianity).
What this means is that on the left - where those following the message of Christianity properly should end up - there is an understanding that making explicitely Christian arguments is alienating and disrespectful to those you should have solidarity with. So, as a result of following (Christian) moral principles, the leftist Christian will generally not express their principles in explicitely religious terms, even when they could do so.
Not so on the right. The right doesn't have a problem with making the outgroup feel alienated or disrespecting them. Often, it quite likes this. So, they will use christian language to express their ideas.
So, even if both sides are balanced in numbers - heck, even if the christian fascists are significantly in the minority - the majority of people being vocally christian will be the christian fascists. And this presentation will reinforce the issue.
If this pattern continues within christian circles as well as in public forums - and it does in my experience - then this likewise gives the christian fascists a dispropportionate influence over what christianity becomes. So, it becomes important that in internal discussions, christian fascism be vocally opposed, and opposed in explicitely religious terms.
The fascists are not doing christianity. They do not speak for christianity, and they are not representative of the entirety of christianity. Their hollowing-out-and-puppetting of christianity to promote evil is itself an act of evil; people like this are why we have the word blasphemy.
Seeing somebody spewing hatred that results in actual, material harm to actual, real vulnerable people, and claiming that this is done in the name of Christ, is a profoundly horrific and perverse thing. It makes me feel ill to witness it.
(A further thought: traditionally, Christianity has held that Salvation is through both belief and works. That you must not only want salvation, you must act on it - which is to say, be a good person. If you claim to be saved but continue to willfully sin, that isn't good enough. So, christianity is what you do, not just how you label yourself. There is a correlation between discarding the belief in salvation by works, and christian fascism. John Calvin's spanner remains in the works to this day).
A thought on Idolatory. What is idolatory? In my view, the treatement of a man-made, worldly thing with the same reverence as holy things. If there is an object or symbol that represents a worldly, human thing that you insist must be treated with reverence and ceremony - as if it was holy - then you have made an idol of that thing.
You know, when I first learned about the way americans treat their flag, I was horrified. Because that flag is an idol. It is so obviously and clearly an idol, and yet. And yet.
Patriotism and nationalism - the revering of the state - is idolatory.
The way we fetishise cops and the military is idolatory.
Even discounting that these symbols are things that do horrific evil as their stated goals, you have taken a human thing - a political body - and treated it like its sacred.
When we consider that an Idol can be a concept or a structure, and not just a literal graven image, we start to see idolatory everywhere on the political right. This is, after all, the entire concept of 'civil religion'. The american founding fathers are not saints, the american constitution is not a holy text, and the american flag is not a holy relic, and the treatment of these things like they are is obvious and flagrant idolatory.
Read up on Tolstoy's thoughts on christian anarchism, as a logical end point of these ideas.
A little diversion on the Antichrist. I dont think Revelations is a literal predictive prophecy, I think it's a warning. It describes - through poetic and symbolic language - pitfalls the faithful might encounter, and encourages them to stand firm against them, and promises that however dire things get, good will triumph over evil in the end. It says 'things will get bad, here are some specific ways they might get bad, but you should hold onto hope'.
Who is the Antichrist in this text? It describes a type of person. Somebody wealthy and politically powerful, who achieves a position of global power and unifies disparate nations under his banner. He isn't christian, but he makes a pretence at piety and convinces the masses to treat him as a religious figure, even as he perverts and distorts religion towards his own hateful ends. He's supported by powerful cultural entities, and combined with his charisma this makes his ascent to power seem inevitable. He is utterly, utterly evil, but he also has really powerful branding that people willingly adopt. He will rise to power in a time of turmoil, sickness and widespread disasters.
Remind you of anybody?
His mark goes on the forehead and the right hand. The red maga hat, and the roman salute. I know I'm doing a paradoelia here, but surely I'm not the only one seeing this shape in the inkblots?
In times like these, I keep coming back to Revelations, and its message that even though things will get really bad, there is always hope, and God's love wins out in the end.
So. The christian fascists are not doing Christianity. They are not following Christ's agenda, which is one of universal love, mercy, and redemption. So, what are they doing, and whose agenda are they serving?
I think you see where this argument is going.
I have not discussed Satan much yet, because while I'm cogniscent of Satan's influence, my faith focusses on Christ; on mercy and redemption and fundamentally goodness rather than evil. But discussing satan becomes pertinent.
Satan is not simply a red guy with a goatee scheming to take over the world like Bible-Skeletor. Indeed, satan is not really a 'guy' at all; it's a tendency. It's the urge to sin, the temptation to not be your best self, or to be your worst self. Every time somebody pisses you off and you have that little spiteful urge to fuck them over? That idea is satan. Every time you want to take something for yourself when somebody else needs it more? Satan.
It is, I think, useful to have a concept of satan that you can personify, so you can (internally) argue against those urges.
Anyway. God loves us universally and absolutely, and wants us to flourish and prosper and do right by each other. Not doing that is Sin. So, here are some things that are sins:
the pursuit of material wealth and power at others expense (see; camels and needles, the meek and their inheritence, etc).
the defining of outgroups against whom cruelty is acceptably or encouraged.
the belief that some people are lesser; less deserving of God's grace and mercy, and so your own kindness too.
raising worldly human powers - states, laws, militaries, flags - into idols.
the - as established - blasphemous perversion of God's will towards evil ends.
These are pretty central patterns we see over and over again among the christian fascists.
They see the outgroup (queers, sluts, immigrants, muslims, people who get abortions, jews, leftists, and so on and so on) as lesser, as deserving of punishment, and they embrace the thought that God will punish them with eternal hell. (See that time pope franky said he hoped Hell was empty, and a lot of these people were furiously angry at the thought.)
They think 'prosperity gospel' isn't a blasphemous oxymoron.
They treat human authorities - cops, armies, nations - with reverence. They fucking love flags, they get extremely patriotic.
They take their hunger for power and their hatred, and they wrap it in the bible - they take God's name in vain - and sully holy things with their evil.
Plus, if we scroll back up to my tangent about the antichrist, there's a pretty good contender for the role currently, and they've embraced him whole-heartedly.
So, their worldview promotes sin.
And they are obsessed with the Devil.
But they don't see it as something they must struggle with; after all, they tend to reject the idea of salvation through works, and claim their saved because they're saved. According to them, rather than doing Christ's work making them christian, because they claim to be christian whatever they do - no matter how evil - retroactively becomes Christ's work. The things they do are good because it's them doing them, and the exact same things done by their enemies would be evil.
So they ignore that little satan-urge in their head, and displace it. They see Satan in everything else, in the outside world, in everything that isn't christian fascism. And then they do Satan's work, by seeking to punish the people they project this satan onto.
What does Satan want? He wants you to hate, he wants you to hurt others, and to profit at their expense. And their religion teaches them to hate and punish others and profit.
They serve satan. And they do it in the name of faith. They are clearly worshipping. So, who do they worship? They worship the one their actions serve.
That is to arrive at the thesis statement of this whole essay, and something I sincerely and wholeheartedly believe, in a literal sense:
the right-wing evangelical Christian mainstream worships and serves Satan.
And then what? I will confess, I am as fallible as any other human. These people - due to their hatred - hurt me and people I love. I am angry at them. I am incandescently angry at the things they do. There is a slippery slope leading from righteous indignation to hatred, and I am struggling emotionally to stay at the top of the slope, and not become actively hateful.
But rationally, how I want to feel? What my better self feels? I feel pity. Hell isn't a place with lots of bats and fire, it's seperation from God's love, and - even if they don't realise it - they turn away from God, and they suffer, and their spread their suffering. They are profoundly spiritually sick, and I want them to get better. I want them to fucking stop. I want them to step out of the dark place they've gone to and return to God's side, and to repent, atone for their actions, and find the same Mercy I want for everybody.
It's fucking hard to look at somebody who viscerally hates me for existing, and want them to recieve salvation, but I try.
I don't know how to fix them or save them. They don't want to be saved. They think our attempts to reach out to them are corruption. They think mercy is weakness and pity tempts you.
They warn each other not to give in to the sin of empathy. It's fucking heartbreaking.

As a devotee of Demeter, I sometimes feel that people only worship Persephone for the aesthetic.
I feel horrible for saying and thinking that but I can't help but feel that way. Certain pagans portray Persephone as some overpowered Mary Sue, downplaying the importance of her mother and sometimes even her husband.
I feel like people really ignore her as a agrarian deity. They claim to love her but feel the need to change everything about her - if you need to change her did you ever like her in the first place?
It honestly just feels like they're talking about a Wattpad main character instead of a religious figure at times it's so jarring to me. Imagine if someone on tiktok described their deity as a dark and daddy figure bad boy with piercings and then its literally just Jesus Christ.
And its not just Persephone, it's the whole pantheon! Some worshippers talk about the deities and their myths like characters and tropes from a telenovela. They are rarely treated like religious figures, they are more than just their myths.
Im sorry i just wanted a place to complain and see if i am not alone
---
Khaire, Nonny,
Honestly, I agree with this sentiment. I've seen this time and time again where Persephone, and many other deities, get "fandomized" which can be problematic for others, even if it's ok in that individual's practice. Sometimes it feels like our religion isn't taken seriously, even by the people who actively practice it, but I also understand that people have different forms of practicing that work better for them. It's frustrating, however, when Persephone is depicted as this Mary Sue characterization of her where she's seen as, like, super edgy, badass, and powerful in a really fandomized way. It comes across as this person using Persephone as an avenue of self-expression rather than worshipping who she actually is as a deity (not to say she's not badass or powerful, to clarify). While it's ok to use a deity as an avenue for self-expression in worship (some trans folk, for example, view Apollon as trans-masc, and it actively plays a role in their worship), it's a lot less ok when you're making this deity into a cartoonish characterization of themselves. The gods present themselves differently to people, but I don't know; I guess I find it far-fetched to believe that Persephone would present herself in this sort of way. I can't speak for her, obviously, but I just disagree with this interpretation of who she is as a deity - putting herself above others, hating her mom, being a rebellious "wild child". I think that, psychologically speaking, some people might just find comfort in this representation of her and see themselves in it which is likely why they gravitate towards it. It's fine to have that experience, but I STRONGLY encourage these people to actually read the myths about Persephone, do the research on how she was worshipped, and actively try to better understand where she actually came from as a deity because this isn't just a character in a show that you relate to; this is a goddess that you're trying to worship, no?
Some people finding more success in their practice with this representation doesn't negate the harm these misconceptions and misinformation can cause. I've met multiple people who believe that Persephone willingly fled to the Underworld to "escape" Demeter (which is untrue), and that is endlessly frustrating to me, especially due to the cultural importance of the Hymn to Demeter (the myth of Persephone being kidnapped). The gods are not their myths, in my experience, but their myths still hold a heavy importance in the way they were worshipped in the past, and the way we worship them in the present. Demonizing an entire deity is the equivalent of trying to cancel a constellation of stars; it's pointless, extremely bizarre, and very "online" behavior.
But yeah, I think some people care more about the "character" than they do the deity, and I will say that confidently. I've met people who "ship" deities with each other, who make their experiences with deities sound - as you said - like a telenovela, and who actively spread harmful misinformation about deities in a way that legitimately disgusts and disturbs me. I've once had someone tell me that a deity [insert reprehensibly immoral act here] them, and to this day, I still cannot believe they said that to me when I was a beginner, just to dissuade me from worshipping that deity. The lengths some people will go to drag a deity is honestly both sad and ridiculous.
I wish some people took the religion more seriously in the sense that they didn't just make random shit up about deities, actively disrespect and disregard the culture the deities stem from, and demonize some deities while bolstering others. It shows a level of immaturity and indifference towards the culture these deities come from. It's not a fandom; it's a way of worship.
---
✨ Bonus round!! ✨
Some ridiculous things I've heard people say that sound like a fandom and/or telenovela (I will put the phrases in "" to express that these are things I've heard, not things I'm saying or believe in):
"Hermes and Aphrodite constantly gossip to each other about the other gods. No one fucks with Hermes because he knows everyone's dirty laundry."
"Ares is starting a revolution on Mount Olympus against Zeus to take the throne." (Yes, I have really heard this)
"Hermes is starting a revolution on Mount Olympus against Zeus to take the throne." (Yes, I have really heard this, too)
"XYZ deity has done [insert reprehensibly immoral and highly traumatic act here] to me."
"I caught XYZ deity cheating on their spouse in the astral realm, and I'm going to tell their spouse."
"The reason the gods haven't been communicating as much lately is because Hades ran away from Mount Olympus (?) and Hekate is going after him. Everyone is panicking a little bit."
"Zeus is such a playboy." (Bruh, do you really have beef with a thousands of years old god who came from an extremely patriarchal society? What, are you trying to cancel him?)
"Poseidon is such a playboy." (Now this take is wild; I don't really understand where it came from at all)
"Apollo is such an UwU 👉👈 shy boy! He's so cute and flustered all the time." (???)
"Persephone has a lot of emotional trauma from Demeter, who was extremely controlling." (No. No for so, so many reasons.)
"Apollo is a himbo."
People say the darnedest things. You really have to wonder what possesses someone to talk about religious figures in such a way, but you know what, if it works for their practice, then good for them. I'm not a big fan of the fandomization of the gods, and I definitely agree with you, Nonny. I won't say these people don't love these deities, but I can understand where you're coming from. It feels like they love the deities in an obsessive fan type of way sometimes, but that's not for me to say, really.

Ok you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but this has been eating at me. Without beating around the bush, do you think now that it’s wrong to be queer or trans? When I saw that one of my favorite good omens artists from back in the day was a devout Christian, it really helped me. There’s so few queer people of faith because there’s so few non-queer Christians who will leave us be. It was seeing Christianity in lgbt spaces that made me want to take my faith seriously. I longed to have that personal relationship with God that the people around me talk about, but didn’t think I was allowed to. I realized it wasn’t Him pushing me away, and it wasn’t Him who was slamming the door in my face unless I was willing to become a hollow simulacrum of myself that I can’t recognize. I decided I’m gonna be with God the way I am whether other Christians like it or not. People like to remind trans Christians all the time that we’re “fearfully and wonderfully made” as a way to place a caveat between us and God. I like to remind them that I’m more than a body. You were part of what helped me come to this conclusion, what pushed me closer to God, but I don’t know if you believe this anymore.
yes, as i’ve gotten to know the Lord better, i’ve tried to align myself with His principles. studying the Word as a cohesive whole, there are things like queer/trans that He considers to be out of alignment with His original intended purpose. while that’s the Truth, it’s not the end all/ be all of life.
you’re absolutely right that He’s not pushing you away. He’s actually urging you closer! He is infinitely more kind, patient, merciful, compassionate than anyone there is. we all have things about us that feel like they separate us from everyone, including God. but He died to bridge the gap of that separation. true freedom is only in Him, and He’s /eager/ for each individual to reach out, because He’s reaching back. “Come as you are.”
i’m so glad that even back then my influence helped you turn to the Lord. i’ve been in your exact position with the same thoughts as you, and Jesus was my guide. i have zero hate for queer people and intense empathy for trans people, because i’ve gone through that. i’m not here to rip anyone apart; everyone is deserving of compassion and understanding. but i also don’t want to be someone encouraging “do whatever you want, God doesn’t care!” i don’t think that’s representative of the Word of God.
i’m sorry if this reply is disappointing. but y’know.. what i think doesn’t really matter. what Jesus thinks matters. He loves you and is the only One who can lead and guide you. 💗
“And I am certain that God, who began the good work in you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (Philippians 1:6)

Round 1 - Side A
Propaganda below ⬇️
Ky Kiske
He named his son sin. Has Catholic guilt™ about his wife, because she's this monster thing he's supposed to destroy, but eventually it's fine.
He fucked the baddest bitch of all time who was more powerful than a nuclear bomb and decided that was so against his religion he named the child he had with her Sin
He had a child out of wedlock, named him “Sin” and immediately left him in the care of his archrival.
ky kiske rules he loves his wife so much he decided to end racism and he swapped one of his son's eyeballs with his own so he wouldn't experience racism and hes canonically a trans ally
Please hes literallg roman catholic he always has a cross somewhere on his outfit and everything. “What God ordains and wishes for… The order of the world! THAT is justice!!“ -Ky kiske
Shadow
In sonic destruction (the AI generated fan thing snapcube made a while ago) shadow was catholic or something which I think is reallyyyyyyy funny
Ok listen. I know this is a stretch but hear me out. He says “oh my God” in the Twitter takeovers so we know this is a possibility. I see him as a Christ-like figure because I saw his whole confrontation with Mephiles and was like “this is a thing that happened in the Bible??” and the pose Mephiles shows him in is literally like a crucifixion and Mephiles is meant to be a demon / false prophet reference. And also he’s called a demon in Shadow The Hedgehog 2005 then the guy who calls him that is like “I was wrong I’m sorry” and that also reminds me of a thing with Jesus in The Bible. But the biggest reason is his whole thing with Maria cause I think he’d come to earth and hear Ave Maria once and convert to Catholicism idk he’s like we’re comforted by a female familial figure named Mary sometimes called Maria?? And her color is blue????? Heck yeah I’m in because I Will Cry. Also feel free to share this as propaganda obv even if he doesn’t get in the bracket just. It’s funny.
I feel like he’d battle a lot with being seen or portrayed as a demon and how the aliens he’s related to very much look and act like demons idk lmao- and also I feel like confession would just be good for him I think he needs it for his mental health
There is a debate on the lovely website tunblr that Shadow T. Hedgehog is an allegory for Jesus Christ.
He is Jesus, idk what to tell you. He lived, he was sealed away, he was awakened again and deemed the ultimate lifeforms, he's angry but not evil, does what he believes is best for people and the world at any given time. Total loser.

Hey :)..
I've been struggling a little. I don't know how to word it.. I am kinda spiritual but I've never been religious, and I didn't grow up that way... But still, I am terrified of hell.
I'm as good of a person as I can be. I never bother anyone. But I'm always scared that I've failed because of the whole gender thing. That I'm excluded now, that I'm just doomed.
I find myself constantly apologizing to the universe, myself and maybe God. I'm giving myself religious guilt. I live in hell already with everything that's been going on in the country. Having to keep secrets ..never going out or speaking my feelings because my family is conservative, immigrant, and mostly ex-military on top of it all. I know that if God and heaven and all that crap is real, that they probably wouldn't be as strict as people say. They're supposed to love us after all. But how could every single ancient faith just..be wrong? It baffles me.
I have thought for most of my life (and still mostly do) that there is nothing after death. But the problem is IF THERE IS. I want to fix myself but I know there's no real way to do it. And I'm scared to go with what I feel because of the punishment I might get, whether in life or in death.
How can I get over this?..
Sorry for the length of this, love your account
Alright, Marina, the resident Catholic here
At least in Catholicism, our pope, the mouth of God Himself, says that it’s ok to be gay, to be trans, that we are allowed to partake in the Church festivities. Include Bible verses from Jesus saying to love all, and that he broke bread with the lowest, and it paints a picture that the Son would love us, that none of us go to hell for being queer. There is nothing to fix, because nothing is wrong, and it’s that thought that allows me to carry the names of the saints with pride. Try framing like that, and see what happens

i honestly think h***y p****r has completely ruined people's ideas of worldbuilding and magic systems for the worse. There are people saying 'death of the author!!!11' but that literally doesn't apply to this franchise. Not only that but jesus the way the author said "all of magical society was created to await the arrival of the chosen one, picked between two cisallohet, abled, white, culturally christian upper middle class boys. No one else is allowed to be the chosen one. The chosen one is a cis boy who goes into girls toilets and is rewarded for it haha isn't he quirky and totally not creepy, it's fine since it's to advance the plot; he had to go into the girls toilets! Trans girls aren't allowed there though, but cis male leads are. Ordinary nonmagical society sucks and we only use magic for ourselves, we don't help anyone with bigotry and are pretty racist ourselves. There is also antisemitic caricatures in this world but i'm a woman so it's ok. I'm making sports teams into dorm rooms with your MBTI personality type btw" and we all fell for it?!?! Us, who live in ordinary society, fell for this?? insane. thank god people are moving away from it.
Not to mention the fact that said author uses woc (the Patil twins, and Cho) as placeholders for our cishet yt boy protagonist before he realises he's in love with the white cool girl, using lycanthropy as an HIV metaphor (seriously, what the hell?), AND making the nosy journalist who spies on children a transphobic caricature.
It's so interesting how Rowling preaches female empowerment when she only really cares about which girls make their love interests look good.
I also think that this whole "death of author" thing doesn't apply to Rowling, because not only is she alive and well, but she is quite literally giving money to terfs and transphobes. She is out here bullying trans people online who never did anything to hurt her. How can you even think about separating the art from the artist, when the artist is doing shit like this?

“hi. i heard you do specific tattooing.” you smile at the employer. he looks up at you, tattoos decorating his muscular arms and fingers, pierced nose and lip with a stretched ear. he smiles at you warmly and nods.
“that's us! each employee does specific art and tattooing as well as piercings. anything you want in particular?”
“i don't have an idea for the design per say but i have a relatively big scar that i want incorporated into the tattoo.”
the employee hums and nods as he listens to you, soaking up all the information. his curly hair falling in front of his eyes which causes him to have to push his hair back every five seconds, revealing an eyebrow piercing and a small face tattoo above the brow that you didn't notice at first glance.
“and where is the scar, if i might ask?”
“my chest.”
“ok! we have the perfect employee for that. give me a sec.” you nod, thanking him as you watch him walk to the back room, jumping as his loud voice bellows out through the store.
“hyunjin! customer for ya!!”
“jesus changbin! do you have to shout?” the man named hyunjin comes out of the back room, rubbing his temples. hair long and dyed black with streaks of red. half up, half down. eyeliner lining his lower water line, septum pierced and a few tattoos dotted on his skin. “you're going to scare the customers.”
“please. they love it when i shout.” changbin smirks and winks cheekily, causing hyunjin to blush faintly and gently push him. “and i know you do too. you love it when i’m vocal.”
“fuck you, binnie.”
“you wish.”
hyunjin rolls his eyes before approaching you. he clears his throat before extending out his hand to shake.
“hello. i'm hyunjin.”
“hey hyunjin. i'm yn.”
“so yn, tell me about this tattoo design?”
“well, i don't have an idea per day but i do have a scar across my chest that i want to incorporate.” hyunjin nods.
“well, you've come to the right store. i specialize in tattoos that are centred around scars whether that be cover ups or something else. if you don't mind, i would like to brainstorm some ideas with you and do a few doodles.”
“sounds perfect!” you grin.
“great. right this way.”
hyunjin and you spend an hour or so brainstorming ideas. you showed him your chest scar, specifically telling hyunjin what you’ve visioned, however, you want the end design to be a surprise to you. you were a little worried about showing hyunjin your scar but, much to your relief, he didn't judge. in fact, it seemed like he didn't care at all.
“can i ask you a personal question?” hyunjin asks as he drags the tattoo needle along your chest. you wince a little in pain, taking a few deep breaths before speaking.
“go ahead.” hyunjin wipes away the ink with some tissue before returning back to tracing the outline.
“how did you get this scar?”
“top surgery.”
“oh! i see. how was that?”
“fucking scary but so so worth it.”
“oh really?”
“yes. to wake up from surgery to look down and see that my boobs have gone, was a huge relief to me.”
“how was it? the whole process and whatnot?”
“lonely.”
“lonely? why?” hyunjin's eyebrows furrow together.
“ever since i told my friends and family that i'm transgender, they just left.”
“that's pretty shitty of them.”
“well, people fear what they don't know. knowledge is power and when people are met with something that's unknown or unfamiliar to them, they run away in fear because they don't understand. i would have happily educated them but… yeah.”
“how did you know that you’re trans? sorry if this is too personal by the way. please stop me if i'm overstepping.” you laugh softly and shake your head.
“no, it's ok. honestly, i wish more people like you would ask.” you look up at the ceiling as hyunjin tattoos you. “i guess i've always known from such an early age but because i was young, i didn't understand why i wasn't like all the other girls that were interested in dolls and make-up and disney princesses.”
“what were you interested in?”
“the standard boy stuff. diy, football, mud, eating worms. i liked shorts and t-shirts, not dresses and ballet shoes. as i got older though, i understood a lot more. told my parents and they told me it was just a phase. well, they made me believe it was just a phase.”
“fuck. that's rough..”
“well, the whole process has been rough. months and months of waiting to be seen by doctors. appointments after appointments. a huge waiting list just for T. and to top it off, mental health issues.”
“i assume knowing you're in the wrong body fucks with your mind; to put it politely of course.” you laugh and nod your head.
“pretty much, yes. looking in the mirror and seeing that my hair and face was changing, y'know facial hair and my voice getting deeper was good but then when i strip naked, look down and see i have boobs and a vagina, it's just heartbreaking. it takes a toll on your mind.”
“why do you want me to incorporate the scar instead of covering it?”
“because i'm not ashamed of it. it's part of my journey. i want to show it off and, even though i do miss my breasts in a weird way, i'm proud of myself for making it this far and for being strong. i'll never be ashamed or hide who i am now because i've spent years hiding and feeling ashamed.”
“i like you yn. you're strong and know what you want in life.”
“thank you, hyunjin. it means a lot to me.” you smile softly at him as he grins at you, eyes crinkling at the corners.
“so, are you done now? with your breasts gone and whatnot?”
“maybe. maybe not. i've been debating about bottom surgery but it costs twice as much as top and well, it's a whole new thing to get used to. i'm completely transforming my intimate area for something new and unknown. in a way, yes i do want bottom surgery but i know i'll be alone during the process.”
“i'll come with you.”
“what..?”
“i'll come with you. i'll hold your hand and be there for you, whether you decide to do it or not.”
“hyunjin, we barely know each other. you're a tattoo artist that’s tattooing my chest.”
“ok. and? i like you yn. platonically of course however, i can't deny this strong connection that pulls me to you. hearing your story, i want to protect you and be the friend that you've always wanted and deserved. you shouldn't have to face something that's this big alone.”
“it's just surgery, hyunjin..”
“yes but it's a major thing to you so you deserve to have someone there by your side. to have a familiar face to wake up to.”
“and if i don't decide on the surgery?”
“then i still want to be that familiar face to wake up to.”
“hyunjin, i–”
“look–” hyunjin turns the tattooing machine off and looks at you. “whether you decide to get bottom surgery or not doesn't make you any less of a person. you're still you and you should look back on all the great achievements and be proud. masculinity shouldn't tackle or dominate you, you dominate masculinity besides, gender is fluid these days so be what you want to be. just as long as you are happy, healthy and comfortable then who gives a shit.”
tears roll down your cheeks slowly. you wipe them away with the back of your hand as you sniffle, hyunjin smiling softly at you before finishing up the tattoo.
“thank you.. i needed that.”
“we all need that extra love, regardless.”
a comfortable silence falls upon you both. the buzzing sound of the machine tattooing your skin being the only thing ringing in your ears. one hour later and hyunjin turns off the machine before gently wiping the extra ink off your skin.
“ready! want to see it?”
“fuck yes!” hyunjin laughs before standing up. you follow suit, following him to the full length mirror.
you gasp in awe and shock as you look at your new chest tattoo. flowers of various shapes and sizes decorated in a line along your scar. butterflies and bees for that extra touch and design.
“holy fuck.. thank you. thank you so so much hyunjin. i love it.” tears well in your eyes before falling down your cheeks. hyunjin laughs softly, his own eyes welling up.
“ah fuck, now you've got me started.” you both laugh as you wipe away tears. hyunjin wraps up your chest tattoo and tells you about aftercare.
as you gather your belongings and walk to the door, you turn on your heel and give hyunjin a gentle and genuine smile
“thank you for today, hyunjin. it's nice to know i have someone to lean on in the future.”

ok girl. pitch me the silt verses. why should i listen to it. go crazy.
(i trust you because in your other hand you have tlt.)
yippee time to yap about my favorite audio drama, okay okay okay listen so the silt verses are a completed audio-drama (3 seasons, 45 episodes (i myself am on ep. 34 rn)) that starts with two cultists, Sister Carpenter (all-around tired, angry at the world, was born into the church but is losing her faith rn) and Brother Faulkner (a young convert who believes fervently and perhaps thinks himself a prophet) on a road trip— i mean a holy pilgrimage. Cause they are both followers of an illegal river god. And yes this modernish world is chuck full of gods who have a direct influence on the world, and the government basically decides who it is legal to worship or not. The worship in question involves chill and casual human sacrifices and horrific transfigurations (if you like body horror, this is the podcast for u). In fact in the setting people design, develop, commercialize and weaponize gods all the fucking time, so really interesting world-building stuff, seriously i love it here. Not gonna go into the plot progression, but it starts out great and gets better and better with every season, i am on season 3 and just constantly blown away.
The writing all in all is really spectacular, sound design is top notch, voice acting is straight up Insane, like there is quality!! Character interactions are to die for, seriously very dynamic, very entertaining. Btw if you love complicated messy very true sibling dynamics, set up camp right here. Also id say pretty good and fun balance between grim tones of a greek tragedy waiting to happen and insanely funny moments and situations (though im in season 3 and it’s mostly grim somebody send help). And the themes!! The themes! The interconnection between hopelessness and hope, the painful difference between a faith and a religion, horrors of capitalism, tragedy and stupidity of war and sm other good stuff. Character cast grows w the progression of the story, we see different places, different perspectives, so really a lot to dig your teeth into, can recommend!!
Also diversity win! We have an aromantic legend of the cult who is trying so so hard to divorce god, our doomed false prophet of the river is trans, there is a transwoman who is basically jesus if jesus went from marketing job to anarchism, and we have non-binary people from politicians to cultists to literal god-killers—
To a normal person id make a little disclaimer that it might be a bit disorienting a couple of first episodes cause there isnt much exposition from the top but as for a fellow tlt fan i know you have nothing to fear, we went through so much more confusing things during harrow and nona the ninth…
So if you do decide to give it a listen, plsss tell me what you think, tlt is my Favorite Thing Ever and tsv is my Also Favorite Thing Ever

Ok this is just a little rant about Christianity so if you are Christian I'm not saying I dislike you as a person for that. This is just a little warning.
My mom is Christian cand I grew up Christian. I've known since 8th grade that I don't believe in that stuff. I've always been scared to tell my mom because I know she's gonna be sad and like feel bad for me or feel like she has to try and get me to be Christian again. Especially since her mom has been making a lot of bad decisions and she is Christian. Her mom's been in and out of drugs my mom entire life. I have a feeling that she'd be scared that I'd do stuff like that if I told Im not Christian. Now I've always gone to church on Sunday just because my mom told me I should and I'm to scared to tell her no. I usually just zone out then maybe I hear him say sum really wack stuff and make fun of him in my head then go back to zoning out. I will say my church is usually not that bad, they usually don't bring up the "controversial" stuff like the lgbtq community and abortion are things I've only heard them talk about once. The worst one I've listened to was one where he had a whole sermon talking about how wife's should summit to there husbands. That was until today where he said some things about trans people. I'm not trans but I am bi and I have so really close friends who are. I obviously fully support trans people so when he started talking about them I got real upset. Now I didn't let it show because I'm still to scared and it would be a room full of people vs me. Now him saying that did really surprise me. What happened next is what really surprised me and upset me. Almost every one in the room started clapping. They don't usually do that. The fact that the pastor could say something like "It doesn't matter Jesus loves you" which he has said before but they won't clap for that the main thing about this religion that should make you happy. But your gonna clap for when he says something about trans people. Shows me were your priorities are.
If you where wondering it's a non denominational church

i started dungeon meshi this morning. i hadn't done any research besides what i learned thru cultural osmosis. here are my thoughts so far:
i assumed senshi was the main character, and i assumed that laios was a Quiet Aloof Sidecharacter that became a Fan Favorite due to Being Blonde, so i rolled my eyes every time i saw fanart of him
apparently laios is actually The Main Character and people like him because he is Insane and appears to have some sort of obscure offshoot of tetraphilia where the act of Consuming monsters arouses him instead of the monsters themselves, and he never ever shuts up about it. this is utterly fascinating to me and i'd like to study him in a jar
however comma. it IS weird to me that there's so many blonde characters. ok moving on
senshi is even more awesome than i originally realized (and i was greatly looking forward to meeting him). i want to fuck this old man more than i wanted to previously
marcille has suffered more than jesus christ. queen i hope you get the girl
falin's got that High Empathy autism
i am a gay man but i'm femme4butch so i will admit that namari makes me blush a little. where are the trans men like this and why aren't they sending me love letters in the mail
watching this show is significantly more dangerous than watching the food network. show of make you Hungry

“More magnussing”
OH OH
OH OA
Alice
ARCHIVIST?? SHES GETTING THE TINFLY FEELING
OH SHES FEELING IT
SHES HAVINF THE SPIDER SENSES
I haven’t collected my thoughts but oh ok that was an episode.
The pre-case is just essentially the whole preparing for the ministers arrival cough Trevor Herbert Jesus fuck.
The case was pretty much as usual their version of the end. I would’ve assumed it was the hunt and was very dedicated to that idea but after the founders experiment we know that the more afraid you were of dying the more they stripped and digested your body down like a Venus fly trap which excretes digestive enzymes the more you move. Which is nice truly this feels like a Venus fly trap situation.
The founder said they were the founder of the Magnus institute and the voice reading this statement out to Sam is possibly Jonah Magnus’ original body. Which makes sense in a way.
The post case was a post case!!!
Gwen got given strange emails with old case files which either means JMJ is giving her important archivist cases or they are giving her trevor Herbert’s statements.
Sam and Celia had a very important convo which was nice and Celia getting straight back into magnussing was great I love that for her
The same few locations that were familiar in TMA are popping up especially ‘Hilltop’
The shopping centre not being used just feels like a drug front but instead of drugs it’s fear
Trevor as MP. Who was predicting this???
I’m quite enjoying the fact that instead of TMA where everyone isolated themselves making them more vulnerable to the fears they all kind of help each other? Will be absolutely lush if they still die though tbh.
Also does Celia get a feeling of dejavu with her TMA-self? She has the sense that these people are helpful and in the TMA-verse they are but in here they aren’t. Especially with her reaction to it being ‘archivist’
Anyways this is great and I didn’t scream at my friend over text because I’m alone in listening this between the two of us if you’re seeing this later I hope you know I’m cursing you

yall i gotta get this off my chest. being christian is not inherently bad, like ive met priests that are really fucking cool and dont give a shit that i dress emo as shit, or that someone is gay or trans or whatever. like my second favorite superhero is daredevil and a huge part of his character is that hes catholic. its ok to be christian.
what isnt ok is when people completely misunderstand the point of the whole fucking religion. its “love thy neighbor” you dumb fuck. thats the number one fucking rule. im sick as fuck of watching christian use their religion as an excuse to be an asshole while fundamentally misunderstanding their own religion. jesus would not give a flying fuck if a boy likes to kiss other boys.
like my brother in christ, jesus was an arab who was poor as shit. he hated the rich. that was like his main thing if you actually read the fucking bible and your sitting here talking about how a rich white man, who steals from the poor, and doesnt accept people for who they are is the second coming of him. be so fucking for real right now.
#christianity is actually really cool if you follow it properly#im deadass like jesus was a really cool dude 😭😭#christianity#jesus christ#catholic#trump is a criminal#trumpies are a cult

Trigger warnings for following text post:
Religion
Christianity
Abortion
Mention of rape
The following text assumes reader is also Christian, however anyone who is curious is more than welcome to read, and I would never intentionally force anyone into believing, so you are safe here!
Just a reminder that canon Jesus was a chill guy who hung out with the unhoused and sex workers, and queer people. Canon Jesus spent His time with those who society didnt love. He was a (likely) queer, Black, Jewish, poor, working class man who was born in Palestine. He stood up for the working class and the undesirable. He preached love and tolerance. He preached the word of the creator through His actions. He was not what modern day "Christians" preach. Fanon Jesus is completely different. Jesus was not homophobic. He did not hate sex workers. He would never blame someone for having a necessary abortion for their own health. He would not be threatening people with hell if they did not repent. He would not be yelling slurs at the people in the pride parade. No. He would be IN the pride parade, He would be spreading the word of God through love and acceptance and through action. Through showing Gods love, through doing as God says we all should. He would be at the abortion clinic, not to protest, but to hold the hands of r victims as they go through the horrific process of an abortion. He would be at the drug clinic supplying clean needles and support for those wishing to get clean. He would be advocating for trans healthcare because GOD MADE THEM THAT WAY! HE MADE THEM THAT WAY! Jesus was an ally, if not a queer person Himself. He loves His creations, and that includes queer people, and sex workers, and poor people, and people who have had or will have an abortion. He loves sinners and He love saints. He died for sinners. He forgives and He loves. There is nothing you can do that will stop His love for you. There is a reason God is called The Father. Because a father (should) love His children unconditionally and forgive them for anything. A father should support and love His children. Jesus is the Son of God, He is the only one without sin, He is God as man, and therefore he LOVES UNCONDITIONALLY. Also, must I remind you, that anything in the Bible against homosexuality, was not against homosexuality at all? It has been translated so many times that the true meaning of a lot of passages has been lost in the English translation. Most verses people use against queer people are truly condemning assault. Not homosexuality. There is nothing against trans people either. Yes, a man should not act/dress as a woman, but must I remind you that gender is a human construct? God did not create the binary. Man did. God created our soul and our spirit and our bodies and He made us in His image. He made is how we were meant to be. Also, in modern times, there are no "womens clothes" and "mans clothes" clothes are simply clothes. We also do not have gender roles in society. Those things are not necessary in modern day. In modern day we are equal in our roles in society. Therefore no man can act or dress as a woman, and no woman can act or dress as a man, because how can you or dress as something that doesn't exist outside of your personal experience? AND btw, transwomen are women and transmen are men, so that verse doesnt even apply 🤷
And lastly, on the topic of things that are condemned, the Bible states that pretty much any sin is not considered a sin if it is committed to save a life. You can eat pork if youre starving. You can work on Shabbos to perform life savinf surgery. Etc etc. The Bible also values the current life over the potential life, so yes, abortion is ok in the Bible if it saves a life, because the life of the carrier is ranked as higher than the life of the fetus. And at the end of the day, you could commit a grave sin, and Jesus will still love you dearly. He will be there when you return to Him. Repent with true intentions and He will forgive.
*please note that it is not my personal belief that true, unnecessary harm, should ever be forgiven by man, I do believe Christ will forgive, just as a loving parent would, but I do not believe He would be proud, He would be heartbroken but His love never ends. And I do not believe a truly evil person would ever truly repent therefore would never be forgiven or enter paradise. These are my personal beliefs. I am not wanting to start discourse on ANY of this.
**please also note, my opinions and beliefs come from someone of my specific experience with God / Christ. My experience is unique and so is yours. My word is the word of one man. Do not ever let it speak over the word of Christ or your understanding of God. But if you are truly Christian, you will love anyone, including non believers and sinners, because THAT is the word of God.
*** for those curious about my experience, I was raised with reform Judaism, and in recent times have begun to follow Christianity. I am no longer Jewish religiously, but a lot of my understanding of the Bible comes from many years of Hebrew school. And no, I am not "messianic". I am Jewish in blood and culture/upbringing and a Christian in faith. I do not support messianics. They are simply culture vultures lmao.
#religion#Christianity#religious queer#canon jesus#yes i used fandom terms when talking about the bible and no idc#if you disagree block and move on#im not in the mood to argue rn
