The Art of Lettering: Perfectly Imperfect Hand-Crafted Type Design / Available at www.draw-down.com / From whimsical to elegant, and old-school influences to the new school—Goodtype’s The #ArtofLettering showcases dynamic #handlettering from today’s sought-after typographers and calligraphers, stoking creative inspiration for graphic designers, artists, and type enthusiasts alike. Hand lettering is making a comeback, bursting out of its #graphicdesign bubble and finding the mainstream through social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest. The Art of Lettering spotlights myriad new and established graphic designers for whom hand lettering is a time-honored practice that has modern applications. Showcasing more than 100 artists from all over the world, the book displays their typographic takes and illustrates their perfectly imperfect handcrafted art, from beautiful photographs of concept sketches to the end result. Straying away from traditional pen calligraphy, artists today employ new and creative approaches, including building type with coffee grounds, watercolors, and combinations of different hand tools, resulting in a dynamically fresh approach to creating type. Written by Brooke Robinson, founder of Goodtype, with contributions by #JessicaHische #GemmaO’Brien #KenBarber and #LaurenHom https://www.instagram.com/p/BtQo6mrnFEw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=71vsbgctvf9i

Absolutely love the work of Jessica Hische. Her typography is just amazing and so detailed. She has a confidence about her work combining the illusion of 3d with flat illustration

This book is great. Recommended. I just wanted to see #JessicaHische’s pretty lettering, but she actually dropped a little Adobe Illustrator tippery I hadn’t thought to do before.

This weeks #summerofsketching topic is "risks" everyone takes risks in their life and sometimes you can be on the fence or over complicating things to not take the risk. The best method I've learned in this situation is the quote I read from @jessicahische 👉 grab the reins and fucking do it! @efdot #typography #text #jessicahische #lettering #summerofsketching #type #graphicdesign #designgeek #love #fun #sarasota #local #srq #art #sketch #micron #copic

Analysing Designer’s Websites
Jessica Hische is a letterer, illustrator and type designer in San Francisco and  Veerle Pieters is a Belgian Web and Graphic designer.
Seeing their websites, you get a feel of who they are and what their work is right away. Veerle Pieters recently refreshed her website/blog, as you enter the website you are greeted with an colourful animation of her logo that later turns grey, to not distract you from the content of the page yet make a statement. In a small introduction she explains what you can find on her website: Tutorials, Articles and Inspiration (her work). Each section is colour coordinated and the entire website is colourful and fun, yet professional. The title page also contains her avatar, which can be found across all her social media, which brings me back to our last lesson where we talked about maintaining a consistent avatar/profile picture so that clients and other visitors can easily identify our social media accounts and Veerle Pieters is the perfect example.
Now Jessica Hische’s title page is completely different from VPs, yet the point is the same. Her focus is on lettering, her name written in beautiful writing next to her avatar/logo in the shape of a bookmark with her profile on it. She briefly introduces herself and right away she seems as a warm welcoming person with just one sentence, the warm orange on her website only supports this notion. She puts the focus on her work, the first thing you see when you enter the website is her newest illustrated book Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave. The orange colour is consistent throughout the page, on drop cap letters, when you hover over a link and on other details.
JHs website showcases her work, it's a portfolio website, whereas VPs uses her website as a blog to share content and inspiration with other designer. She does showcase her work as well, but the focus is on sharing her process of work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both websites have a different atmosphere. VPs website seems more modern, the illustrations she posts are always accompanied by their colour palettes, and the colour palette she chose for the website is complex and works perfectly. JHs website gives away a more old-timey feel, as you’d expect from someone who’s handcraft is lettering. The colours on her website are calm yet warm, making you feel right at home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
VPs website structure consists mostly of grids, wether that’s for the list of articles or the images in her Inspiration section. JHs on the other hand has a simple scroll layout most of the time, only using a grid for her projects.

Both their websites work great on PCs/laptops as well as on mobile devices.

As most of you know, the US election is coming soon. And like most of you, I’m tired. Tired of the hate. Tired of the division. Tired of the death. Tired. Of. Trump. So, when I saw @jessicahische and @riseupshowupunite’s posts this morning, I was inspired to make this. We need to take America back and bring it forward into a more equitable and just country for everyone. Only one candidate this year can do that. Vote for @joebiden and @kamalaharris to save this country we call home. https://www.instagram.com/p/CFiWkMlj--D/?igshid=1xawj700qewi0
